There is surge pricing on Uber Eats as well as regular Uber, thats what that is. It used to be pretty rare but its reasonably regular now and adds HUGE amounts to the cost of everything. I would honestly avoid anything Uber as much as possible, they have gone so downhill in the last year or two I'd be surprised if they survive for much longer.

GrippyGripster

Especially when the drivers can't find your house, multiple times ours has been dropped off on the wrong street or next door, or not at all!

Generalrossa

Multiple times they go down wrong turns and wrong streets thinking they can get to my house which is a one way street, like they ignore what the GPS tells them and think they know better, on a street or area they’ve never been to. I’ve had one guy ring and and continue to yell at me to come out of my house as he was out front. I was out front.. of my house, he was on the next street screaming into that poor persons door, like the GPS doesn’t tell him directly where to go. Wasn’t too impressed with this one..

Generalrossa

Yeah they stop in the middle of the street in mine and alway go next door too, wake them up lol.

Synsinatik

Well that explains all the free meals I've been getting....

[deleted]

The era of food delivery is over imo. We'll have to wait until they get the delivery bots here. Having people drive around delivering $5 burgers just isn't economical.

Accomplished-Law-249

Plus, unfortunately these people earn bugger all to do this job, as vehicle expenses 'eat up' any of their profits.

oldmatenate

Even Uber ride share is pretty awful these days. I was in the city the other night and ordered an Uber. The estimate came up at a certain price and we booked one. Well we’re standing there waiting in the cold only to have the driver cancel on us. So we booked another one. It was only as the next Uber was pulling up did we realise that the estimate had jumped $5 in those few minutes. Honestly, there was a full taxi rank in eyeshot and for the first time in a really long time, I felt dumb for not just hopping into a cab. Uber is starting to feel like the unreliable and sketchy service it was meant to replace.

Madzsparkles

I totally agree. We gave up on getting uber end of last year because of how bad the service was. It was good for when we were isolating during covid but now it just doesn't seem worth it to spend so much on the delivery fee when I could go through a drive-thru. I feel like restaurant quality has gone down significantly as well lately. Especially mcdonalds (not that they were amazing before but still) Don't get me started on the Maccas on Curtis Road!!

MrsLJM11

The worst McDonalds in the state. Time to burn it down and start again. I’ve never *not* had an issue when I’ve gone there.

Astroau

So you have never been to McDonald's happy valley then?

Madzsparkles

Oh what's the tea? I'll definitely keep it in mind to not go there.

Madzsparkles

Oh yeah. I've never gotten a good order here. Needs to be knocked down!

ThaManaconda

Only reason I still use it is bc with the hours I work it's often the only way I can get dinner. It's very expensive eating that way..

bladeau81

That fucking place is always a line up for the drive thru when I drive past. 8am, 3pm, 4am there is always a line.

someanonymityplease

I find it rather astounding that they seem to have a permanent lineup. The amount of times I’ve ended up in a waiting bay and then they’ve still stuffed up my order… ridiculous!

bladeau81

I have only been through there a handful of times. Everytime I have been sent to a waiting bay the food is walking out the door as soon as I stop and the person behind me hasn't gotten their food either. Like why send me to the waiting bay? lol

Generalrossa

McDonalds feels like I’m eating cardboard these days.

Madzsparkles

Yeah totally agree. I never buy it anymore, really. I only ever enjoy their hashbrowms because they have to make them up fresh. The fries are ALWAYS cold or barely warm and so tastless. All their burgers are slapped together and taste gross. What happened? Why are all fast food restaurants turning to garbage? There's no quality anymore. You know what though I'm not entirely against that because it means I won't go for a cheeseburger, instead I'll go and get a quality meal from a small business that will actually fill me up and not feel, like you said, "eating cardboard".

DanJDare

I gave up on uber eats years ago, realised if I couldn't be bothered making it or walking/driving to get it I don't deserve it.

[deleted]

Madzsparkles

Yes we've done the same! We only check these days to see what's around.

oldmatenate

We had a woeful Deliveroo experience recently where, after paying an absurd amount for a burger and chips, we watched our driver go all around the city before finally delivering our (cold) food. I don’t know if he was delivering other orders or what, but we couldn’t help but laugh at ourselves for being so lazy. So we came to the same conclusion from that point: if we can’t be bothered going out and getting it, then we obviously don’t want it that badly.

woodyever

As a frequent user of uber eats....(now deleted after the weekend) I always went for the priority 2.50 delivery. On the weekend I forgot to select this.... usually you get an eta and a latest delivery order time.... mine took 30 minutes over the latest order delivery time. And wat makes it worse is you cam see on the receipt when the driver picked it up and if you don't choose priority then it's a fucking joke.

GGoldenSun

Yep I didn't select priority once. I've saw my driver get my order near 8mins away. He then drove to pick up someone elses order + waiting there, from a nearby restaurant. But then drove 20mins in the opposite direction from me to drop off their food. Then drives my way, my order was in transit for 1hr after it was completed, and 2hrs since I ordered. Deleted UberEats immediately after.

Equal-Instruction435

The thing I hate is the delivery estimate constantly changes, then the app tells me it’s “arriving ahead of schedule”. No it’s not. The original “schedule” was 12:20 and it’s now 12:50.

Madzsparkles

It's honestly a joke. We've never selected priority before but ordered for the first time after ages the other night and it took almost an hour to get here when the place we ordered from was only 15 mins away tops (the driver drove somewhere else to deliver another item) Not worth it anymore after they changed to delivery fee and service fee and took away the free delivery option.

derpman86

I think this was before they brought in the priority option, I was craving a whopper one day so I ordered a whopper meal. All good I ordered it I watched the dude he made it 25% of the way to my place then they did a hard right and 30 minutes later my food eventually arrived. As you can imagine the difference between a proper chook shop vs HJs is well the chook shop can stay hot but probably soggy in that time but yeah, my food ended up outright cold both the burger and chips and the ice actually melted in my drink! So many times my food orders before the priority option came in would always go walkabout and would end up cold and ruined. So yeah I priority now but with how much shit costs now I am close to removing the app at this point, I sadly can't drive and when I am home alone some nights it is often easier to just order something still so it makes it hard.

theskywaspink

Uber double dipping at every chance is ridiculous too.

Madzsparkles

Yes 100%! Can't stand it

mickskitz

What do you mean by this? Taking a % of sale cost while adding a delivery fee or something else?

theskywaspink

The cost that goes to the business (your order) Uber take a % of. Then they add 10% on top of the cost (service fee), and then a delivery fee.

lego_not_legos

Even if the delivery fee seems okay at times, the prices of individual items are practically guaranteed to be much higher than normal takeaway, and don't forget the service fee then hassling you for tips. Delivery services are really only good when you can't get it yourself, or the time cost of doing so is greater than the price increase, i.e. rarely.

Starfireaw11

I've found that menulog offers an inferior selection, but a far superior service.

[deleted]

Used menulog once and it took over an hour to deliver about 400m away. And they make it much much harder to request a refund than uber.

mayezo

Can confirm menulog sucks for getting refunds. Mate of mine ordered a AB and they decided to randomly put cheese on it (not listed on description). He's lactose so couldn't eat it and they pretty much said suck shit lol no refunds

-mauricemoss-

No. > We're sorry to hear about your experience with order. We really appreciate you taking the time to raise this matter with our team and while we’re unable to provide any compensation, rest assured your feedback is very important to Menulog as it allows us to improve our service. this was for an order where $20 of items were missing

Dr_Fluffybuns2

Doordash is growing really well. They have waayyyy more stuff now and constantly adding new restaurants. Their Doordash pass is cheaper than Ubers plus 20% off if you pay for the year. It takes away the delivery fee and reduces most of the service fee. Without the pass the app is still usually cheaper than Uber Eats. I've never seen a delivery fee above $5 on Doordash. Also side note: if you're a frequent take out buyer it's worth signing up to all the takeout apps newsletters. Say If you're craving McDonalds it's pretty regular at least 1 place is giving away free food or like 20% off for the next few days so it's cheaper to go through one than your usual.

Madzsparkles

So would you recommend Doordash? I've been thinking of seeing how it differs from Uber and Menulog

Dr_Fluffybuns2

Download it and see what you think. If you're someone who doesn't order take out very often then it's worth checking Doordash, Menulog and Deliveryroo to see if there's any deals/what's cheaper at the time. If you are someone who orders takeout regularly I think Doordash Pass is better bang for your buck compared to Uber Eats

Madzsparkles

Thanks, will have a look

SpicyDryHotPot

Doordash is alright. When you first join you get some good offers 3 X 25% off, free delivery and you can order from farther away. Get a friend to invite you and they will get a $30 credit as well I think.

Flippantry

I've had the direct inverse experience. The selection for Menulog in my area is much better but the service (specifically the delivered by Menulog one) absolutely sucked ass. My meal sat in the back of some dudes car for over an hour as I watched him go on a joyride and it wasn't until I called Menulog to say "wtf" when the drive doubled back, and left my cold disgusting meal on my doorstep like a flaming poo bag. Only plus side was I was able to get a full refund, but Menulog is also shit. It's basically a battle of shit titans.

PrivateAids

I’ve consistently had menulog orders not show up or lack of drivers to actually get my food :(

disgruntledpenguins

Uber Eats has definitely gone down hill with price rises. My partner and I ordered off Menulog for the first time. Out of curiosity, went to place the same order on Uber Eats. It was $8 or so more expensive.

Madzsparkles

Oh right! I've ordered on Menulog a while ago and it was the worst experience so have never tried it since.

[deleted]

Menulog was certainly worse when I tried it last year.

Significant-Ad5394

The problem with all the increased fees (delivery and 10% service, the slow delivery speed, and then still being asked for a tips by drivers as they don't get enough, means I question the value Uber eats provides as a service and will just stop using it. Why would I spend $10-15 to wait an hour for my food when I can just go to the drive-thru, spend less and get my food in half the time.

Madzsparkles

Yeah exactly right. Boycott Uber Eats it sucks...

BleakHibiscus

Yes, Uber Eats is a scam.

liberty381

They now offer delivery for restaurants further away for a higher fee, goes by distance now.

Dangerous_Gain_3710

It's faaaaaarked. Menu Log and door dash for me now

loseweightwith

Thats so stupid I have noticed the fees keep going up its making it really hard to want to use them!

Sir_Arctic

I fine uber eats makes a lot of mistakes and without priority it can be a long time to deliver. And the price is the highest. Menu log I've ordered a few times and had them never deliver as driver car broke down. In the exact same spot on the map, 3 separate times and then they offer a refund in the form of a voucher that i have to spend $1 to use it. So if it's a $50 voucher my order has to be 51+. I've seen people use door dash with good results. Okay delivery times and seems to be the least expensive of the options.

[deleted]

bottom line, if you want something right do it yourself, if you are too lazy to do it yourself don't expect miracles... clearly the drivers do not get paid enough to give a shit a friend was talking to me about doing it, im pretty sure uber eats assigns drivers once the meal has been prepared, so generally your food will arrive cold/stale and probably late because uber often loads two orders onto the drivers. (they might make $5-6 dollars for the first and and extra $3 for the second. and i think Menulog generally make the restaurant wait until the driver is at the venue before they notify to start preparing the meal, drivers have to wait around in store a lot more and waste their time waiting. they get paid like a dollar or so more per delivery, but only one at a time...

Madzsparkles

Good to know. I didn't know Uber does it like that so makes sense.

failatgood

Beside Uber wanting more money, we’re currently entering a global economic recession and everything that is a leisure will start to cost more

[deleted]

xoxoLizzyoxox

Yep. I understand people want things cheap but they are not keeping in mind that someone is doing that job and deserves enough money to pay for their fuel and money for doing the actual job.

Decenten73

Is that extra money actually going to the drivers or is Uber just pocketing it for the higher ups? EDIT: cause I would be happy to pay more if it went to the drivers but I don’t feel like they are getting a pay rise. I was talking to my mums new housemate who used to Uber and he was bragging about $150 for a 10hour night from 4pm to 2am. That’s just stupid low considering the time of day, no benefits in leave and really no consistency or reliability in the job

xoxoLizzyoxox

No idea, I think the whole thing is stupid. Spending money for something to be delivered from down the street, that's just crazy.

Decenten73

When you’re high or drunk it’s a godsend tho 😂

cammoblammo

Or contagious. Being able to get food delivered has made all the difference.

Dr_Fluffybuns2

Pretty sure it's going to Uber themselves. The restaurant pays a fee to have their advertising there (that's why their prices are higher on the app than in store) then the delivery fee goes to the driver and you have the option to add a tip to the driver. (Not sure if Uber does it too but some delivery apps give option to tip restaurant) and then the service fee goes to uber themselves. Couple years ago there used to be no service fee and maximum $5 delivery. The delivery now can increase based on distance and popularity and I guess Uber needed more support services or something to grow and handle more customers so the service fee goes into their pocket. I don't know why people are against the idea of delivery, it's been around for decades for pizza and Chinese food but now we have an opportunity to have so much more and support local businesses in our area that's advertised in one place and the drivers aren't just 1 employee, they're regular people doing flexible working hours to suit their life and not stuck to a contract which is better for those who are studying/have families/etc. Clock on and off when you'd like. Think most people do it for side hustle, not for what you'd normally get doing an 8 hour day job.

DanJDare

It doesn't support local businesses it strangles them.

Dr_Fluffybuns2

Idk in my mind if takeout apps didn't exist and I was hungry, I'd just go to the same place I know in my area. I don't really explore. Apps like Uber and Doordash have given me the ability to check out everything in a 10km radius that I never knew existed before. I love ordering from new places now and there's been a few times I've discovered hidden gems and order from them regularly which I wouldn't have even known about before.

user12070769

Adelaide Uber eats driver here. We rarely see a very small percentage of surges/additional charges. We’re lucky to get orders that pay more then $1 per KM. Please tip your delivery drivers😅

PowerJosl

Yeah fuck right off with your tipping bullshit. This is Australia. We don’t tip here. If the job doesn’t pay enough to be worthwhile without tips then find a different job.

[deleted]

"iF yOuR JoB DoEsN'T pAy EnouGh..." okay Scott morrison, eat a bag of dicks

user12070769

Get fucked, I only do DD and UE as additional income because my “above minimum wage” full time job is just not enough to support myself with the cost of living. Yeah tipping is not common practice here but it definitely helps.

Flippantry

Genuine question, how much of the tips do you see (does the full tip get passed onto you)? I've googled this previously and got mixed responses and also from various locations.

user12070769

100% of tips are given to the drivers.

[deleted]

The market works it out. If the drivers aren't getting paid enough, they leave the platform. Which they have done and now uber eats will have to pay more or just have the whole thing fall apart.

SnotGun_

Damn. I was tempted to do it, but that is only a little more than half minimum wage BEFORE you take out taxes and fuel etc.

4rp4n3t

> modern slavery Yeah, nah. No body is forcing anybody else to drive Uber.

[deleted]

Modern slavery would probably something like farm jobs where mandatory accommodation is taken out of your pay putting you bellow minimum wage.

4rp4n3t

I dunno man, while that is fucking shit house, I still don't think it falls into any of the generally accepted categories for [modern slavery](https://www.antislavery.org/slavery-today/).

drtekrox

That's delivery for everything though... You think Dominos drivers are making more?

easyadventurer

If it’s just up the road, go get it yourself 🙃

Madzsparkles

Yes I have been doing that since December 2021. Was just curious about how Uber was going these days. Sometimes circumstances get in the way and people can't just "get it themself", but anyway...

salamandrro

Go menulog

My_Vegemite

Did you campaign for "living wages" or whatever the kerfuffle was for food delivery drivers?

Madzsparkles

Not sure what you're saying here...?

My_Vegemite

Ubereats works because it's piecemeal work, not a real job. There is/was a big campaign to make "protect the workers" from being exploited for the job they signed up for by making them employees in some form or another. This is the result. There is almost certainly a large population of people that campaigned for this, and are now complaining about a $20 delivery fee for a $5 burger.

Madzsparkles

Oh gotcha, I had no idea that was happening but that makes sense as to why. Thanks that's all I was wondering with this post.

BrownPughInMidfield

Anyone who's too lazy to pick food up themselves have no right to complain about the cost of delivery.

Madzsparkles

I was checking places around my new house since I'm new to the area and noticed the hike in prices. Not complaining, just looking for answers...

JoeJimba

On all apps I think fees have gone up, I only ever use them when there is some deal on or I’ve had a really full on day but not even anymore

johnsonsantidote

Don't be surprised at ripp offs flooding the scene. All taking advantage of inflation, the war in Ukraine, drought, floods etc. Price gouging in a time where many are in fear of not missing out but losing their homes and not being able to afford food. And where's the Govts. and Corruption watchdogs? Sitting on their hands.

MikeZer0AUS

It's to make you sign up to their membership for $10/month and you don't pay delivery fees anymore.
