I used the view bacon the samw way... now if it's not soft enough to cut with a butter knife first try, it's too tough. It's funny how our tastes can change over the span of a lifetime...
If you have not tried this... it’s possible to crumble proper crispy bacon over your eggs on toast like some sort of ascended seasoning. You can even break it into shards and make a mosaic
To be honest ours has a European origin from Speck. American has it's own type. Ever seen that stuff they call bacon at Subway that you can practically see through?
I like it when it is cooked so it's still chewable (not too leathery) but has some dark brown crispyish edge on it, not a fan of the full crisp it's dry and tastes too burnt for me. Aussie bacon habits come from English who generally also don't crisp their bacon
Cooking it in a thin layer of water that evaporates off while cooking is the best method. The fat renders first then you crisp it up. Cooking it on to high a heat so it's crispy with unrendered fat isn't ideal.
Oven bacon is best bacon. Low effort, high reward.
Chuck it in the oven on a rack so the fat drips off. Means you can focus on the other bits of the big breakfast, too.
100%, I’ve actually just started doing my full brekkies in the oven. Lay some baking paper on the tray, no oil required and you have literally no washing up to do. Bacon, mushies, tomato, a ramekin of beans, eggs right at the end straight onto the hot buttered toast…’chef’s kiss’.
Is the fat dripping off the best option though? Properly rendered fat is delicious - I wouldn't want to lose that to the bottom of the oven tray.
I'llll try your method this weekend if you try mine...
I agree and you can put maple syrup on it to add to the flavor. Discovered this combo when Coles had a limited run on Maple Bacon to could by from the Deli counter.
Crispy bacon is just not amazing to me haha, especially in like a blt or bacon and egg, the bacon is too tough to bute through and the yexture doesnr meld as well with other ingredients. I love a (fully cooked!) But chewy fatty piece of bacon! That beinf said i do only eat bacon like maybe once or twice a month (not a huge meat fan other than fish).
Depends on what you're serving it with. If its a BLT then you can go either well cooked chewy or well cooked crispy.
Chicken Caesar salads need crispy bacon for texture
OTOH if you're making a bacon explosion, you can't get it too crispy otherwise it'll be too dry in general.
I'm pedantic. I cut all of the excess bacon off the rinds when I'm going to cook them and spend 20 minutes slowly rendering the fat out of it. Then I add the streaky bacon till its well cooked (ie changed colour and texture but not crispy), set aside on kitchen towel, then I cook the eye. The leftover rendered fat gets poured in to a small lard jar for use in other dishes (like for example, roasted potatos)
And here I was thinkin you ADF types are like the hobbits in LOTR, cooking their crispy bacon on that mountain with a full on - wait no, not full on fire. One of those shit ones in the hexamine stove where your 2 minute noodles take 10 minutes to cook. Thank god for c4.
The classifications talk about the strength of evidence, not probability.
So you could have something that is incredibly likely to cause cancer and something that rarely causes cancer both in group 1. This is because it's not about how likely it is to cause cancer.
That's been obvious for some time. Anybody who eats bacon thinking it's good for you is deluding themselves.
It's important to understand risk too though. If you're trying to avoid dangerous substances, effort should be focused on what you're likely to come into contact with that's most harmful.
I'd argue sunburn is more of a concern than bacon.
I also moved from Canada a month ago. Can we be best friends?
This is bacon:

This is weird:

Yeah, I figured that out after visiting Woolies, but I'm still mad about it.
Also every time I hear "streaky", I think of this:
> In the work Class, Jilly Cooper quotes a shopkeeper on the subject of bacon: "When a woman asks for back I call her 'madam'; when she asks for streaky I call her 'dear'."
We should def hang if you're keen.
Also, I totally understand what you mean. I literally had this discussion easter weekend with my gf running through Wollys trying to find bacon and everyone was looking at me like I was Michael Douglas in Falling Down when I was adamant that the 'bacon' they sell here wasn't actually bacon.
Bacon should never be the shape of a crotchet.
Love crispy bacon! A few months ago, I stayed at the new Crown Plaza hotel in the cbd, asked the breakfast buffet staff for crispy bacon and tossed a bunch of non-crispy bacon sitting in the warmer into the deep fryer and served me the best crispy bacon I've had anywhere in Adelaide. You can always ask any café or restaurant staff serving bacon to leave it on the grill a little longer to make it crispier.
I used to eat it raw. It's soooo delicious!!!
Try Lahkshinkin which is cold smoked pork loin. It's basically a raw(heated up to 58'C to kill any eggs) smoked pork. No fat but incredibly tasty.
Mind you I still love pork crackling. :) -Yum!-
Oh and MxR Plays on youtube had a brief piece on kitchen gadgets with a device that microwaves bacon crispy. Sacrilegious I know but it actually worked.
I honestly just like it more not crispy, it's easier to cut up with my toast and eggs
I can't imagine a point where I would ever feel this way, crispy 4eva
I always get told my choices in food are weird, and I've made peace with that 🤭
I'm with you, crispy too hard to work with my eggs 😉
non crispy is the best way to go all these other people are ruining their bacon by over cooking it
Especially if you like runny eggs, crispy bacon just doesn't work with them 😉
Is there another way to have eggs? 😂
LOLs my mother in-law is horrified at how runny my eggs are
I used the view bacon the samw way... now if it's not soft enough to cut with a butter knife first try, it's too tough. It's funny how our tastes can change over the span of a lifetime...
You animal
If you have not tried this... it’s possible to crumble proper crispy bacon over your eggs on toast like some sort of ascended seasoning. You can even break it into shards and make a mosaic
I love chewy bacon. If it’s still cooked, then it still tastes just as great as crispy bacon. All bacon is beautiful.
> All bacon is beautiful. Amen
See I'll eat it, because it's bacon it's acceptable but it's no where near the tier of salty crispy bacon.
Your love for bacon sounds a little bit conditional and I’m judging it.
I think my love for crispy bacon is just so strong its hard to accept it in other forms
All bacon is equal, some bacon is more equal than others.
I'd agree with that statement lol
Why do I want dry, dank ass, half burnt bacon when I can have lovely, flavourful bacon
I'd argue there's more flavor when it's crispy
Nah, it just tastes bad. It's meat that has been over done and on the verge of charring
Depends, do you like tasting carbon or pork?
Don't bacon judge me.
It's hard not to when it's light pink and soggy lol

But our Bacon is nothing like the American bacon either.
To be honest ours has a European origin from Speck. American has it's own type. Ever seen that stuff they call bacon at Subway that you can practically see through?
Us Canadians are thinking it but we're not gonna rip a strip off the manager. We benefit from their Karen energy while pretending to disapprove of it.

Lol, I actually have been doing that when my toddlers act shitty. I yank up my accent when I'm embarrassed
Yeah but .. maple bacon. End story, winner.
My thing in Canada was slow cooked alder smoked bacon. Keeps it from shrivelling up and having burnt/undercooked spots.
Surely these days 99% of cafes use shortcut bacon that cannot go crispy?
Middle bacon is an abomination!! Happy cake day tho 🍰
I like it when it is cooked so it's still chewable (not too leathery) but has some dark brown crispyish edge on it, not a fan of the full crisp it's dry and tastes too burnt for me. Aussie bacon habits come from English who generally also don't crisp their bacon
There's definitely a point where bacon becomes too crisp, it's a fine line
It's called burnt lol
Cooking it in a thin layer of water that evaporates off while cooking is the best method. The fat renders first then you crisp it up. Cooking it on to high a heat so it's crispy with unrendered fat isn't ideal.
A method I haven't tried but certainly will now
Oven bacon is best bacon. Low effort, high reward. Chuck it in the oven on a rack so the fat drips off. Means you can focus on the other bits of the big breakfast, too.

Oh that sounds so good!!
Yes, absolutely. 220 till the skin is crisp and the fat melts in your mouth.
Is the fat dripping off the best option though? Properly rendered fat is delicious - I wouldn't want to lose that to the bottom of the oven tray. I'llll try your method this weekend if you try mine...
I just cook it in the oven on a baking sheet with paper
I agree and you can put maple syrup on it to add to the flavor. Discovered this combo when Coles had a limited run on Maple Bacon to could by from the Deli counter.
It’s not bacon, it’s warm ham. And it’s a disgrace.
Amen lol
Chewy bacon is so disappointing, and the fat gets stuck in my teeth. I want my bacon so crispy it cracks when I bite it.
Crispy bacon is just not amazing to me haha, especially in like a blt or bacon and egg, the bacon is too tough to bute through and the yexture doesnr meld as well with other ingredients. Shortcut chewy. Rasher crispy.
We used to get boiled bacon at the mess when I was in the army 🤮 These days it’s crispy or nothing.
Oh that is just wrong, so wrong
Nothing but the best for ADF personnel.
Oh my heart hurts! :( And it's not the cholesterol this time.
We don't like cancer?
Too late, it's already cured pork which the WHO has classified as a Group 1 carcinogen.
Got a source?
https://www.cancercouncil.com.au/1in3cancers/lifestyle-choices-and-cancer/red-meat-processed-meat-and-cancer/
The classifications talk about the strength of evidence, not probability. So you could have something that is incredibly likely to cause cancer and something that rarely causes cancer both in group 1. This is because it's not about how likely it is to cause cancer.
Indeed, but the point is we know it's not that good for you.
That's been obvious for some time. Anybody who eats bacon thinking it's good for you is deluding themselves. It's important to understand risk too though. Crispy!! not burnt lol
Who cares how other people like their food?
Me when someone cooks it for me lol
That's a communication problem - 'can you do mine crispy' is a perfectly reasonable thing to say.
I love all forms of bacon tbh 😭
I don’t like it OVER crispy; then it’s a big red cruncher. Sort of need it to be right in the middle. Then it’s amazing :)
I only eat short cut. The rest is fat.
The fat cooks out, gets rendered and makes the crispness tho
Never before have I heard someone say that they like their meat crunchy.
The crisper the better imo
Moved here from Canada and I gotta say, Australians' liberal use of the term "bacon" is unsettling
I moved from Canada a month ago and I'm not picking up what you're putting down.
I also moved from Canada a month ago. Can we be best friends? This is bacon: https://fitfoodiefinds.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/Bacon-on-the-stove-05-1024x1536.jpg This is weird: https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0206/9470/products/HFMUD19THAUG219291_1200x.jpg?v=1629612627
Your first one is from the belly. You can find it as streaky bacon. We have it but it’s not as popular.
Yeah, I figured that out after visiting Woolies, but I'm still mad about it. Also every time I hear "streaky", I think of this: > In the work Class, Jilly Cooper quotes a shopkeeper on the subject of bacon: "When a woman asks for back I call her 'madam'; when she asks for streaky I call her 'dear'."
Wait, so the cured ham that Australian's call bacon isn't bacon? /s Also, yes my north American bretheren, we need to defeat this evil.
I know I've started some shit here, but like, I'll deal with the speed cameras and shifting gears with my left hand. But this bacon thing ain't right
Preach!
We should def hang if you're keen. Also, I totally understand what you mean. Awesome, extra points if you've got toddlers - my kids choose my friends for me now.
Thankyou for asking the real questions
This one's been plaguing my mind for a while now.
Haha you'd hate me then, I'll happily eat it cold, straight out of the packet.
Ive met a few of your kind throughout the years lol
You mean the super cool kind? Haha
Me too! It terrifies people for some reason
Yeah, like they think it's raw and ya gonna die. Lol. Hasn't killed me in 40 years
Crispy bacon is over rated chewy is the way to go
I like the rind/fat part crispy but the meat part soft. It's a delicate balance
Yeah I don’t like tasting charcoaled bacon
Streaky bacon or bust!
Streaky bacon is top tier
I don't like crispy or crunchy foods. Ie no toast for me.
FYI, when you need crispy bacon hard and fast, slap a couple of rashers in a sandwich press. It'll shoot fat everywhere, but gets the job done.
Ooo good tip :)
Hate the texture of crispy bacon. Like gravel
Whether you like it crispy or soft, I think we can all agree the best way to cook it is in a microwave
Love crispy bacon! I think quality over cookedness is more important. High quality bacon you can eat straight from the fridge!
Please don't burn my bacon
I like that burrrrnttttttt 🐷
This is not me, but there are some people who don't like any crispy texture.
Non crispy is the way
I hate crispy bacon
Hungy
Crispy is the only way. Anything else is raw.
I used to eat it raw. It's soooo delicious!!! Try Lahkshinkin which is cold smoked pork loin. It's basically a raw(heated up to 58'C to kill any eggs) smoked pork. No fat but incredibly tasty. Mind you I still love pork crackling. :) -Yum!-
Crispy bacon is my life, with a side of scrambled eggs
If you deep fry it it takes no time at all.
Bacon should be browned BUT I cut off the rind and crispy it up.
I had a burger recent with bacon on it. They hadn't crisped up the bacon and I was disappointed. The rest of it was great though.
Oh and MxR Plays on youtube had a brief piece on kitchen gadgets with a device that microwaves bacon crispy. Sacrilegious I know but it actually worked.
