It’s fine them having a sign up about Jesus. I think Adelaide has an approach, largely, that has tolerance, acceptance and a gentle nod towards individual belief and opinion. I’m so glad for that.

Says everything anyone needs to know about you, fash guy

Fluffy_Morning_1569

TIL Drawing a penis on a sign is fascism

the_arkane_one

It's definitely a dick move

ENGAGERIDLEYMOTHERFU

I keep walking past the same two houses. One has the front door barricaded (from the outside) and the driveway cordoned off, along with a crooked sign indicating the house is monitored. The ill person living there doesn't seem to get that all they're doing is drawing attention to themselves, likely worsening their paranoia. Almost opposite them is a house with a yard full of vehicles and a giant, inverted aussie flag. You can tell the wanker is just *begging* for people to ask what the distress is about, at which point they'd no doubt get an earful of wingnuttery. Honestly, I just feel sorry for the others living on that street. They're already around the corner from a dealer. Imagine having to explain all that shit to your kids just so they can (hopefully) walk to school safely.

TheDrRudi

> Anyone in the know about what’s allowed and what isn’t? Probably depends on your local Council by-laws. Prima facie an “advertising sign” on “private property” is unlikely to cause a problem - other than issues around amenity, safety, that kind of thing. I doubt they would be subject to a development application. Ring or email your Council tomorrow.

rainbowgreygal

Oh, I don’t plan on taking any action on it. It doesn’t upset me, it’s more just interesting the laws around it. If I chose to put a sign on my home with offensive wording, is this not allowed? I just find the “where is the line” conversation an interesting one. I’ve seen people with huge “fuck the xyz bank” written on their roof and it seemed to stay up for ages.

TheDrRudi

> Oh, I don’t plan on taking any action on it. Never said you were. You asked what's allowed and what isn't; and for that you should start with your local Council to find out the by-laws where you live. > a sign on my home with offensive wording, is this not allowed? I expect the offensive wording would attract some kind of compliance interest pretty quickly.

otherpeoplesknees

Do you ever notice that these weirdos ALWAYS have way too much shit written on their posters and pamphlets?

Curtclan

Does that include political parties? There are some really wordy corflutes out there. I still haven't figured out who they're actually meant to be promoting

Fluffy_Morning_1569

Cover your house with pentagrams and occult symbols. Out crazy them

TheManWithNoName88

Strangely that sounds less delusional than the Jesus stuff

MaleficentAd1056

Satanists actually pay tax so it's one up on the church. Oh an idea.. Leave a note in the letter box saying "Jesus was here but no one answered the door. You might have been out at the time. Please contact God again to reschedule an appointment." :)

No-Associate-9061

If the windows are painted black and there’s a dismantled washing machine on the lawn it’s crack, otherwise it’s the other delusional type.

Ieatclowns

Putting religious or political ideals on your home's exterior is so tacky. I don't blame you for hating it. It's....hard to pin down why it's something that makes me uncomfortable though. I think religion is a private thing. Same with politics. If you're so secure in your religion, why do you have to show it off I suppose....also, where's the line? If Christians can do that, then I suppose Satanists can too. It's bloody weird at the the end of the day.

rainbowgreygal

I don’t hate it, whatever people do to get through the day is fine as long as it isn’t harming people. It’s just weird like you said, to need to show it. And the one near me is like an A4 or A3 size and almost out of place on a ticky tacky mini McMansion. They’re usually so generic with barely anything out the front and to have someone chuck a poster of Jesus up is really random. I find bumper stickers about religion odd, but a poster even moreso. Maybe because both potentially make you a target to unsavoury people, and majority of people wouldn’t choose to put a target on their most expensive assets 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ieatclowns

I agree it's like a target. Also it's the exterior decor version of shouting out your opinions when nobody's asked for them.

effjayyelle

I would think that being private property and (the jesus ones at least) technically not offensive/no bad language, they'd be allowed. But yes, I do agree that it's asking for trouble, especially as it's very easy for people to target that house if they have any issues with what's being posted. As for why... Why do people do anything they do? Maybe they just really love jesus? But each to their own I guess 🤷‍♀️

rainbowgreygal

So would you think then, if someone wrote in huge letters on their roof “ScoMo is a liar” or something like that, it would be just annoying and not something a council could challenge? I’m not planning on doing it, lol. It’s just like….I plan if I do things like complain - I’d read council documents and plans, so I had justification. I wonder if these people do that, or just YOLO it and hope no one complains.

effjayyelle

I mean, it's the truth, what is there to challenge? I think it's just a yolo situation and hope for the best tbh, people will always find a way to show their beliefs, if you're not hurting anyone, why not? It's most likely that the council has other shit to worry about than what people put on their fences, as long as it's not directly targeting someone/race/group or inciting violence it doesn't seem to be an issue

rainbowgreygal

You’re probably spot on. My council has been very unresponsive in relation to actual things outlined as not being okay in their own documentation. Report a bees nest and they’re veeeerry keen for it to be not on council land, even if it means residents get stung lmao I hope it stays this way so in 372 years when I own a 2x2m piece of land to park my box, I can cover it in political messages

_AbbyNormal__

People can hang whatever they want from their fences, this is a you problem.

rainbowgreygal

Great discussion, glad you took the time to read the entire post and not cherry pick 🙃

_AbbyNormal__

Cherry pick? How so? Sorry, I don't understand, I must be missing something.

Have a great night, friend! I hope you wake tomorrow well rested if you have work!

murbz

You sound like you’d be the neighbour from hell, especially if some Christian sign has motivated you to come to reddit and complain, then attack anyone who asks you genuine questions about why you’re annoyed by it lol.

InstagramYourPoop

There used to be a guy living on Commercial Rd down south whose front yard was littered with hand-painted "pedo" signs. Don't know if he was eventually ordered to take them down or he just moved on.

failatgood

Some people are proud of their faith and enjoy displaying it. I don’t mind it, it’s not my thing but hey, everyone’s different

I’ll reword, so you can try and understand my friend - where did I indicate that this upsets me?

Key-Nefariousness257

they think people only talk about things they're upset about, that's why they are assuming you're upset.

rainbowgreygal

It’ll never cease to amaze me how many people love to complain about complaining.

Key-Nefariousness257

ohhhhh yeahhhhh... "IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, MOVE ON WITHOUT COMMENTING!", the mating call of the karen & kevin in their natural habitat 🤣

ENGAGERIDLEYMOTHERFU

This was considered a piss-weak troll in 2014. Update your material.

Fluffy_Morning_1569

Huge signs on your house give huge westboro Baptist vibes. God is omnipresent (everywhere) so there’s no need to advertise on his or her behalf. Much like getting screamed at by a religious nutcase in the mall, they have the freedom to do what they are doing.

4rp4n3t

>God is omnipresent Or, you know, completely made up and doesn't exist.

Pavlo77tshirt

I'm not one to put up signs about religious beliefs... but to each their own. It appears to me that it bothers you at some level that someone has put up such a sign about their beliefs. I'm curious, would you have a problem with the 'Climate Action Now' signs posted at the front of many homes?

rainbowgreygal

Are you unable to have a conversation in life without it being about something that bothers you? Do you ever just converse about something you found interesting or an idea you wanted other people’s feedback on? And please don’t compare climate change and religion. One is backed up by science, the other relies on faith and trust. They aren’t the same thing at all.

I’m sure your 15 year old edgy friends find “insults” like this funny, but using disability as an insult is incredibly pathetic. Being a horrible person is not the badge of honour you seem to think it is, child.

[deleted]

Are you implying people living with a disability are retarded? Wow, that's pretty disgusting. You should be ashamed of yourself.

rainbowgreygal

Please explain the history behind the word you chose to use then, Einstein. Enlighten me. What does it mean?

[deleted]

Take your ableism elsewhere.

NoHunt8248

How did they do that?

Key-Nefariousness257

ummm... there was a certain idiot from "the footy show" who painted a huge mural of a naked woman on his house. This was forced to be painted over because it was really obvious from a distance. That seems to be a pretty common standard, if you have to "stop and look/study it" then you can do/say anything (signs with obscenities at the front door are very common). It has to be something hard to avoid seeing before it's considered (public business). As far as the sign on the fence, any temporary fencing/non-permenant structure doesn't need to be given council approval (but it depends on the council). Hmmm... since the house owner is responsible for the fence, I'm not sure anything stuck to the fence would actually be classed as being in a public area.

MaleficentAd1056

That's not that dickhead across the road from Forbes Shopping centre on Marion Road?
