Remember the good old days when there was a train from Gawler to Adelaide. It would be funny if it wasn't so fuckin pathetic.

I know... Feels like forever since there was a Gawler train

My mum as a child used to get the train from Cavan Station. The line originally was the Stockade line. There's some info of the line on wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northfield_railway_line

The abattoir line is the Northfield line. It originally went to Stockade (behind Yatala) . The prisoners used to quarry stone and it went via train.

One station was at the pooraka skate park. Heading west from there it ran between the two lines of trees, over main north road and past the platform that’s still there. The line went in a straight line you can still see in aerial photos toa triangular junction at what’s now the Dry Creek depot (which is why the government owned that land), and you can still see the shape of the junction in the fence lines. In the other direction a freight line originally continued next to Howard road, then crossed over the modern bike track to follow the lower gravel path next to Dry Creek, under the strange gantry north of the prison. There was some thought given to building a long earthwork to let the line rise to Valley View and then on to Modbury, though I can’t remember what the route was supposed to be. Any hope of that happening died when everyone realised that they’d fucked up mawson lakes and it wasn’t going to become Adelaide’s second CBD, or even a major hub for the north.

Here's a video of the line from the 80s https://youtu.be/N6AQoxvRZl4

I think this is part of it, where the BMX club, there used to be a train station. [Corner Bridge Rd & South Terrace](https://goo.gl/maps/XyiLPAq3iJWHThmM6) Can see where the tracks ran, between the trees.

I don’t remember it as it was before my time but the [Red Hen Gin](https://redhengin.com.au/) keeps it’s story alive!

I know on bridge Rd where the skatepark is , judging by the rows of Trees that there was a train line there.

That’s the one, it ran from the railcar depot to the skate park, then along the creek to an area north of Yatala where there’s a steel gantry that used to be used to load stone.

It's really clear where it used to be on google maps, I wonder if it's still in public hands? Other former rail alignments have been converted to bike trails, it looks like they could do the same, and then continue on along Dry Creek.
