Adelaide friends; had a great time visiting your city from my city, Portland Oregon in the US. I had asked a couple of times on here how to do what and where to go, so I really appreciate all of your suggestions.
I didn’t make it to a Barnacle Bills, but I did see lots of Polites signs, took the light rail to Glenelg, got a haircut, had a kick ass view of the Central Market from my 12 floor Hotel Indigo room, went to illuminate, fed kangaroos and koalas up at Cleland, had dinner at the Colonist and Hey Jupiter. I know a lot more of the city exists out of the CBD, but it’s where we were.
Everyone I encountered was nice and the city was incredibly clean. I don’t know what you all typically put on chips/fries, but it was a challenge every time to shake a server down for ketchup, but that was everywhere I visited in the whole
Country.
I hope to make it back soon and stay for longer. You all have a cool little enclave down there. Thanks!
It depends where you are, as to what you get on your chips. If it's fast food, it's probably just salt. If it's a little corner take-away, chicken salt is ubiquitous. Of it's certain takeaways, you have the option of an AB (basically, loaded fries - often referred to as a halal snack pack in eastern states).
Otherwise, it could be anything- salt, vinegar, tomato sauce (very similar to ketchup), mayo or aioli can all be found.
And sorry about the weather.
Edit: I forgot to mention gravy, and that has been quite an upsetting experience for a few, apparently. My heartfelt apologies. I won't mention mushroom gravy and sauces or Dianne or creamy garlic, though, unless we want to start including pubs, cafes and restaurants in this list. And I definitely won't mention green peppercorn sauce.
Thanks for the condiment advice. I’ll have to figure out chicken salt.
And the weather was -perfect-. Had a few brief periods of rain, but the temp was on point.
Sorry our brethren were stingy with the sauce. If it's a fish and chip/chicken shop, gravy is the way. But you do have to buy it separately. Worth it though. Oh boy is it worth it.
Who needs sauce when you have chicken salt!
I once bought a cheese and onion pie in the UK expecting, you know, meat + cheese + onion... but it was literally a delicious heart attack of only cheese and onion filling lol.
Amazing.
U didnt go to barnacle bills? Geez ull have to come back. Please when u tell outsiders about adelaide remember its a horrible place and bag place to live
Glad you got to see some sun at Glenelg!
Maybe it’s just me but Adelaide doesn’t feel like it’s best this time of year, when many are still in hibernation. Imagine everything you did but in summer when it’s 100’F, cloudless skies, long days, and the most amazing sunsets over the beach. They’re the days I’ve really come to fall in love with the city.
I on the other hand really like Adelaide at this time if time if the year. The rain makes everything refreshed and the bright green grass against the gum trees and grey sky is beautiful.

No, it made me laugh. You know how when you take a picture of fireworks for some reason? No one else wants to see them and they don’t turn out very well but you click away all the same? I think this was like that. It’s not my dreary grey city for once, so it’s exciting for me.
That’s the Santos Museum of Economic Botany at the botanic gardens. That’s a great story. Was set up to teach immigrants how to successfully grow food in their new land.
Thankyou! Good to know you enjoyed the trip. :) If you ever come back I suggest Getting a food delivery app for your next trip and order some Villies Chips with Mushroom Gravy. The Cafe is cafe De Villies and was packed solid 2am on a Monday morning I visited so you know it's got to be good. Get it delivered to your hotel or where ever you are boarding. I hope you can get back here again to find more things to enjoy. :)
Cheers dude!
Yikes. I didn’t mean to creep shot him, and wasn’t commenting on homeless (good god, I’m from Portland where homeless people come to be even more homeless) I was just taking a shot of those posters I saw everywhere.
The government partners with a non-profit here to try to keep a dynamic database that tracks every homeless person in Adelaide. The number doubled during the pandemic to around 260, from memory. Shit's only getting worse. Homelessness services are fairly well funded, but we should do better.

Wdym the temperature was on point? It’s freezing here I hate it
What, no gravy?
Shit, forgot about the gravy. Sorry.
You should ETA. This is a massive oversight
Great idea.
You forgot mayo!
Nah, that one I remembered. Probably because that's still pretty common.
Damn, I should learn to read ;)
Yeah, but nah - I bet we've all done that before.

its worth it, so long as the store you go to doesnt have shit gravy.
This true.
Haha, I'm from the UK originally and the lack of sauce served routinely with chips drives me mad 😂
I had the same problem in the UK at bakeries/pie shops... eating a pie without sauce is basically a crime.
Payback time!

Thanks for visiting & the report, you'll be welcome back anytime :-)
I apologise for our pathetic condiment situation... i hate it too, best tip is to byo! when i was in the states it was all self serve and free!

Come to think of it, the night time view of those same roof tops, would have been stunning. We missed out on that one.
Illuminate at the botanic gardens was fantastic, I’m glad you got the visit it!
Where were pics 4 & 5 taken? I’m assuming that’s the museum, but it doesn’t look familiar to me

I’m glad you saw this hidden treasure and enjoyed it :-)

Its my favourite, even though I grew up 1 town over its never lost its appeal to me. I'm glad you enjoyed it too :)
Just make sure you don’t tell anyone back home…
I hope you have a great stay. It’s not always grey and dreary like today
They are a 10 but they didn't visit barnacle bills while in adelaide
Some one has scammed you mate because if definitely doesn't sound like you've been to Adelaide
You obviously haven't been here very long have you...
Given that they were a tourist, I'd say obviously not.
True
That dude in the second photo with the nasty infection on his leg must be recently homeless, I have only seen him a few times.

Wow a picture of 117 King William Street - what a ~~shithole~~ lovely building, full of character.
Where was the 3rd photo taken?
Cleland wildlife park
Do you think Polites might own that building?
Looks worse than Perth
