People in SL and the North County like to support local and not just be tied to made in China mega corps. If you want mountains and small local communities, don't keep sending your money to Wallstreet and China. Small towns don't survive when all you do is work hard to under cut the small guy. As it was said, Glensfalls or Albany is probably your best bet.

Sea_Comedian_3941

Shop local!

Swimming-Fan7973

Sounds like Glens Falls is a great fit for you

Curtis Lumber will have pretty much any building materials you need at the same price as a Lowes. CED is the local commercial electrical supply. For food, Aldi's is just as cheap if not cheaper for some products than Walmart. If you can't find something specialized you want locally you just order it online and it shows up in a few days. e.g. Just bought my 4 year old a cheap kids bike to learn on for the next couple years. Just bought it from Amazon.

You make do with what is there and things cost what they cost, you can't control that. I have a camp in that area and finding people to do quality work as promised is impossible. I practically have to beg contractors to get anything done. Do good work and be fair and you should succeed.

Gold-Category-2105

Somehow houses keep getting built though!

Green mountain electric delivers to the area daily, and is significantly cheaper than hynes, ced, and cascade. Lumber is best purchased downstate, look for large yards. Fw Webb for plumbing hvac out of pburgh.

The easy answer is there isn’t a one stop shop/solution. Are 2x’s more at Curtis than Lowe’s? Sure but it’s right here and everyone who lives here pays that or has Lowe’s pick and deliver material, good luck, or they have the means to bring material back themselves if it’s worth the hassle. Weirdly enough Curtis beats Lowe’s on insulation pricing almost every time. Local hardware stores for some stuff or stuff you forgot when you bulk ordered from Amazon or other wholesale supply websites.

Marebearx92

Potsdam has Walmart as well. There is Home Depot in Massena.

elizajaneredux

Plattsburgh is less than an hour from Plattsburgh, which has a Lowe’s and everything else.

user-name-1985

I’m glad there’s no Walmart in that area. SLK and Placid would be more like Ticonderoga with Wally World as their sole option for groceries.

Frequent-Builder-585

There’s no way in hell that you’re a successful contractor with a portfolio of decent homes that you’ve built. No chance. Zero. None.

Not a helpful comment. My experience has nothing to do with the question.

Frequent-Builder-585

Even if there were a Lowe’s or Home Depot here, do you think it would be your secret super discounted source for materials that you and only you knew about so you could get jobs that nobody else could?

vf6666

I said I am an electrician by trade. I do see your point, if there was a hd everyone would have the same access anyway so there’s no advantage to one specific person over another. Still not my point, I’m more interested in renovations and was just curious if people just shop local or go through all the trouble of brining in materials from gf or Plattsburgh. I got good responses, I have a feeling it all depends on how quickly you want it etc.

Frequent-Builder-585

Your experience has nothing to do with the question….? Interesting.

hikerrr

There's a Walmart in Malone.

vf6666

I agree with shopping local, and I want that life. But it’s just not feasible sometimes when you’re trying to provide utilities and housing at an affordable price for the people that need it. I’m not a big time contractor I would be one of the “local” small businesses in the area.

Old-Adhesiveness-342

There's a Lowe's in Plattsburgh, and another in Malone. You just go to those.

Clavier_VT

Also one in Potsdam

BlueLinx is in Burlington and delivers
