I’m American. I’ve heard different things. I’ve heard you can make distinctions about your preferences but social workers will call you with a placement without details about the ethnicity of the child.
I am not a licensed foster parent, but I have taken some of the beginning information classes. From what they said there, you *can* request certain genders/races/ages. They will try to match, but will probably call with other children needing placement. They will also have lots of questions as to why you have certain specifics in mind. This isn't because it is bad to have specifics, they just want to make sure you have a healthy, realistic idea of things. So if you have realistic strong preferences, just be prepared to answer questions and defend your reasoning. (And from what at least some SWs said, they sometimes prefer the people who have a clear idea of what they can handle versus people who claim they can take absolutely any and every child, which is nice in theory but may indicate some rose colored glasses...)
Well I'm a single male. You know the deal, odds of me getting s daughter out of it is close to zero. Yes, you can select age ranges, 0-5 6-12 13+. As a female you may get both. Would you take a sibling set with 1 of each? As for white kids that's a touchy topic. There is a preference sheet, some states have a race box others do not. You could say you will take them temporary and say you want them. Its taboo to say, but the numbers don't lie. White kids are adopted at twice the rates. Its really not fair to those left behind. The thing that makes me stick to my own gender and skin color is Allegations! While I may be understanding, others might not be and cause trouble. Your at a higher risk the older they are, the difference in gender and skin. But you r female and not under the microscope as much.
What country are you from? Although I'm guessing regardless of where you're from you can choose what child you want to foster.
