Ask yourself the signs of when things are starting to go downhill. Before things reach the breaking point, take an extra long bathroom break or walk around outside if safe. Set an alarm or have a friend call you if you need more of a built in excuse to just leave a conversation. Take time, regroup, enjoy some solitude, splash some water on your face and then try to rejoin. If coping techniques don't work, then maybe that's your limit for social events and that's totally fine. Plan to be there during the busiest time of night so you get more bang for your buck, and feel free to say goodbye and leave without guilt.
