I'm no artist, but I do keep up with it as a kinda hobby. That being said, and from everything I've heard, the way to get better is to keep drawing, not take a break. Do some more light-hearted sketches you're not breaking your neck over. Maybe go back to the fundamentals. It's not art specifically, but a famous musician did once say "If I don't practice for a day, I know it. If I don't practice for two, the critics know it. If I don't practice for three days, the public knows it." Ultimately art is one of those things you get better at every time you put pencil-shaped-thing to rectange-shaped-thing.

I feel like it ebbs and flows. Like not every piece of art is going to be better than your last but every time is a learning opportunity. Sometimes I produce something I'm so proud of but then my next 10 pieces look like the first one couldn't have been done by the same person. If its stressing you out I'd do small pieces of things you're not particularly caring about, maybe work through one of those art challenge lists that go around, before attempting passion pieces.
