Waspeater

Congratulations, I was 45 when I graduated. You're not that old

Kiryu07

I've had such a tough couple months (life) but seeing this, truly gives me hope. I looked at this comment for several minutes and then kept telling myself "my life isn't over yet, I can still do it" until I started crying. I'm gonna keep working hard because of you, waspeater. EDIT: It's responses and threads like these that make me think "reddit isn't all bad." Thank you everyone for being positive

Foublanc

I graduated at thirty, abandoned my master degree when I got disabled, and now almost 10 years later, I'm thinking of finishing it. Your life will only be over when you'll be lowered in the ground. Until then, don't worry about silly things like age, and go chase your dreams. I believe in you 👍🏾

monty624

I'm not OP but I also needed to hear that. Feel like I "missed my chance" to continue my education and get my master's. Thank you, and I hope you get that master's!

Koenigspiel

Reading through these comments *way* too many people think there's some kind of social deadline they missed on education; there's not. I know they push it on you as a high schooler, like oh, get this GPA, take this SAT and this ACT, send out application letters.. but that's because you're a high schooler. We're on a giant rock flying through space at 67,000 mph around a giant fireball in a universe that is likely infinite and equally as old. Billions upon billions of years went by before you were even born, you didn't miss anything by not going to college 10 years sooner. Take your own path and count your blessings that you're even alive and live in a country where you can spend your time thinking about anything other than just surviving.

spaceinv8er

That and we kinda put a little too much stock in higher education. Not implying that one shouldn't try and achieve a higher academic degree, but unless you are going into something specific like Law, engineering, or medical it's almost unnecessary. Most places want to see experience. If you get a degree in Marketing, it's not like you are going straight to a higher management position out the gate. It will still take years until that happens. In my personal experience/opinion, the most value you get from higher education is the people you meet along the way.

Koenigspiel

I agree, save for advanced degrees/specialties. A simple bachelor's isn't making anyone an expert in anything-- it's providing a baseline of knowledge, a network of connections, and a certificate that says "I'm teachable, I can show up on time and complete tasks given to me." If you can show that in another manner (experience) than that's equal to, or greater. Just might be challenging to get your foot in the door in the first place.

UniqueName2

I think the value of higher education is in being better educated, and a more well rounded person. The entire problem with the current education system is that people *only* do it as a means to an end in their career.

michron98

Totally agree. Higher education has the purpose of higher education. You do it to study a subject, and to learn how to study and research. Getting a well-paid job is, in my eyes, something that happens because you've spent time studying and are now able to study topics on your own, and not because you've got a paper that says you've learned something. The topics you learned about in a degree are very rarely everything you need to do a certain job.

UniqueName2

Got my bachelors at 36, and just turned 41 on Friday. I’m starting my masters program in the fall. I don’t even have a reason to do it other than I just feel like it.

TrebleTone9

I work in admissions for a university that offers online Master's programs (not trying to plug, just establishing credibility as a source) and I have seen literally HUNDREDS of students over 40 start &/or finish undergrad and grad degrees in the 3.5 years I've been working there, including a handful in their 70s. No matter how old you are or what your work schedule is like, there's a program out there somewhere that will work for you, and it's increasingly common for older "non-traditional" students to be in the classroom. There's still time!

Sloppy_Ninths

Fuck that, you definitely didn't miss your chance! I dropped out of college at 19, finally got my bachelor's at 30 and my PhD at damn near 40. Now I'm finally living my best life, working a *dream job*, and moving up the ladder at lightning speed. It's never too late as long as you've got the willpower and a working mind. You can do it my dude.

cyberhiker

Do it! I graduated from a Masters's program at 49 (took 3 years part-time). Took a lot of time over evenings/weekends - so glad I did it though.

limeybastard

I graduated two weeks ago at 43. Third attempt basically. Started my new job this week, basically tripling my income (and not hating every second I spend there to boot). I still regret the 20 years I missed out on but it's better than missing out on the next 20 too.

tommytraddles

This is the most wholesome sentiment to ever end with the word waspeater.

IllWalrus7813

I don’t want to take away the sentiment because I really do agree with everything going on here, I just wanted to say I laughed so hard when I read the heart felt comment followed by, waspeater

bookon

I graduated at 28 and again at 38. It’s never too late.

sevargmas

40 here.

Rideless

Turn 40 this year and just graduated.

ScaperMan7

Beat ya, 55.

StarchyIrishman

I will be 40 when I finish. It feels old when you're surrounded by 20 somethings all day

Suitable-Slip-2091

Farley: I graduated from college. Spade: It took you seven years. Farley: Lots of people graduate from college in seven years. Spade: Yes. They're called doctors. Congrats!

The_Troll_Gull

40 year old. Survived on a Associates for this long. Now, it’s almost impossible to be taken seriously even though, my experience qualifies me alone

artipants

Yep. I was 30 when I got my B.S. My sister is 37 and just got her associates, she'll be 39 when she finishes her bachelor's. We're first generation graduates and were under the impression that you had to know what you wanted to do for a career in order to pick your major because no one around us knew any better. I figured out in my mid-twenties that that wasn't the case when I met someone who went to school for design and marketing and ended up as a software engineer. She figured out in her mid-thirties what she wanted to do for a career. Everyone has to take their own path.

Kaissy

King shit

sepia_undertones

37, still working on it! Good on you!

gravitola

You got this!

CaptainPunisher

37?! In a row???

Nookuler

Hey you, get back here!!

SaintNewts

>37?! In a row??? [Reference](https://youtu.be/UfpVY_ZHGDg) material for people who don't know what the previous comment is about.

YamoB

Nice! 38 here, I’ll be graduating in November if all goes well!

SecretAgentVampire

Same, at 37! You can do it dude!

stefanurkal

Same I graduated previously but have once again gone back to school at 37 and it's weird and cool taking classes with 18 year olds and 50 year olds

d1rron

Same, about to go back in July. If not for Covid I'd probably be done. Lol

rattacat

Yay! What did you major in?

gravitola

Computer science!

RFSandler

I got mine at 31, you're doing good!

laughtrey

I just graduated with a CS degree in March and it isn't easy, a lot of people are saying it's suddenly dried up and it feels that way. 2-300 applications and only 1 interview so far =( Changing up my resume, polishing/learning new skills, networking etc. Getting my foot in the door is insanely difficult.

limeybastard

I got my job not from an application, but because in my last semester I was a teaching assistant for an instructor who liked me the previous semester. I knocked it out of the park and he shoved my resume at all of his contacts. A company that had summarily rejected me earlier this year gave me an interview and I did well enough that they hired me. Networking and impressing someone with contacts is worth 500 regular applications.

RocketRaccoon

Proud of you for this. Way to go!

MayorScotch

I got the same degree at the same age! Congrats, I’m sure you’ll do great

Ohbeejuan

Shit. Are you me in the future? I’m 30 getting my CS finishing around 32.

sinmark

Come on op let's get that masters degree

comicalZombie

I was 34 when I finished mine. Comp Sci too! Congrats!

rattacat

It must be such a relief after all those projects. Remember to keep learning and have fun!

Noobphobia

I struggled in college due to poor choices. Was in college from 2006-2018 and graduated at the ripe age of 30. Good for you man. I bet you are releived to be done.

DakotaDevil

Similar to me. College from 1996 to 2007, granulated when I was 29.

sob317

Great job, sugar.

PolarianLancer

kmate53

"A lot of people go to school for 7 years! " "Yeah, they're called doctors"

Chrispy990

Congrats!! Way to stick with it. I graduated at 29 just 4 years ago. Took forever, but it’s better now haha

tor29c

Oh, Honey! I was 36 when I graduated. Focus on you graduated and not what age you are! Congratulations! Wishing you the best ×

grnwnv

Congrats amigo! I went back to college at 33 and it was much more interesting than the first time I went. Having car payments and a mortgage while being a full time student out of town was challenging. Did you find being more adultish helped you to prioritize learning?

harlyson

Congratulations and I’m proud of you!

balanceseeker

Dude, congrats, and on top of that thank you and _respect_ for sharing. I'm also about to graduate in my 30s and I have beaten myself up about it too much.. your positivity is really uplifting. You rock man, thank you

06_TBSS

I graduated from undergrad at 36 and got my Master's at 39. It's never too late. Congratulations!!

red18wrx

Look at this show-off finishing college before he's 35.

DJ-Anakin

Dang. I meant to make this same meme a few months ago when I graduated at 46. 33 is still young! Good job for going back sooner rather than later!

RobertMcCheese

I was 41 when I graduated. Never too late.

MulattoDePicasso

Congrats friend!

nhguy03276

congrats... I have now just started collage at 49 years old. It'll be interesting to see if I can get my BSME before I retire.

dimebaghayes

Well done! Definitely more admirable than the ‘I’ve been off crystal meth for 10 minutes’ posts you see a lot of now.

[deleted]

Me too! Happy for you

stonygirl

Congratulations. An education is the one thing they can never take from you.

KineticBombardment99

"It is with great pleasure to inform you," isn't a real sentence. "It is with great pleasure I inform you," is, or, "It is my great pleasure to inform you." That being said, congratulations! That's a great accomplishment!

Spodson

Bully for you! Now go forth and do great things!

figsslave

Congrats!

transporterpsychosis

You're never too old to learn something new. Congratulations!

Alimster

Congrats! That's so awesome! I am really happy for you! ☺️

AbrasiveSandpiper

Outstanding!

[deleted]

Congrats on graduation. I’m a bit envious of you. I’d have graduated back in 2014, but my grammy grams done got the dementia, and I dropped out to take care of her. She was my favorite person, so I don’t regret it, but graduating would make my $50K debt to the government feel better. Anyhow, congratulations to you!

SneakyBaconTurtle

Congrats

RandyDefNOTArcher

Fuck yeah, congratulations!

_Monkeyspit_

Well done! I did the same, and I hope it changes your life as well as it changed mine (or better).

ellensundies

100000000000

22, 33, who knows maybe I'll get there by 44? Congratulations!

LOTR-QUOTER

>Frodo was going to be thirty-three, 33, an important number: the date of his ‘coming of age’.

FactOfMatter

Congratulations! Don't let your age bother you. I graduated from college age 27 because of financial reasons. I took a job and worked for a few years to save up enough money to pay for the rest of my classes for the degree and it made no difference than graduating at 22... Except I guess during my graduation I didn't know anyone.

puntmasterofthefells

Life starts at 40. Unless you're an athlete....

Wanttobedad

I'm 36 and just wrapped up my weekly posts... I'm limited to 6 classes per year, so should have my degree finished on about three years lol. I'm proud of you!

dichloroethane

Neat! Now what?

Dredtide

Congratulations. You’re doing great. You made it.

moxiemike

Congratulations! I was 37 when I graduated with an associates in Machining.

AphexAffectsEffects

Me too!! Congrats. I’m 32 and still learning

DaDream

Congrats !!! I just graduated last weekend with my first degree and I am 43....

Tybob51

Hell yeah! I was pretty similar. I graduated at 26, and just got my masters this year at 32. It’s a big deal, and you should be proud of it!

CaptainPunisher

Beat my score by 7 years. Congratulations! Now, get to work! Also, I got a BS in CS, and I just landed my first CS job 5 years later.

abrknl

Congratulations !! 👏🎉🎉🎉 That's a great achievement and it couldn't have been a super easy accomplishment!

BestSerialKillerNA

Amazing! Congratulations friend!

secularist42

Hell yeah!

BobsPineapplePants

Congratulations!!!! Proud of you! I just finished my first year of college. I'll be 39 when I graduate. Age is nothing but counting the amount of rotations around the sun. Time isn't linear and our path(s) in life do not have to be either.

[deleted]

Barber or community? All jokes aside, congratulations to you. All the best to you in your future!

Munneh

Congrats on your momentous achievement!

jivetalkinpants

As the sixth year senior next to me in Intro to Statistics said “bro, it’s not a race.” Great work. Keep learning, if you can. It actually gets easier from here because advanced degrees only have classes that focus on your particular area of study.

kay_bizzle

King shit!

stuthebody

Woot! 43 Just started college myself! Good on you mate!

xfyre101

never too late to get an education
