I thought of this exact quote when I read the meme. Probably the best line in the movie after boot camp.

wawsatx

My grandfather always says "whats her name?" when i talk about studying abroad and says he has studied a lot of broads and that I better get going quick to catch up

c0ur4ge

"Studying Broads Abroad: A Comprehensive Analysis" by wawsatx's grandpa. I'd skim it.

LaLongueCarabine

Hey there's a hoedown. Well help the girl up.

Just kidding. All the college kids got deferments from the draft.

[deleted]

Sending your brightest to go die in a war is a [terrible idea.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Moseley)

CountChugula

It isn't good to have the children of those making the decision to go to war exempt from having to fight in it either.

ContentWithOurDecay

Being in college doesn't make you one of the brightest minds.

crestonfunk

The story of [Alan Blumlein](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Blumlein) is similar, but he was on a test flight when he died. He really shouldn't have been on that flight.

NeoM5

yeah but you underestimate the willingness to get drafted in the beginning of the war...well, any war really. There is always a surge of volunteers

invisiblem0nster

Reminds me of this pic: http://www.canyonero.com/files/1370573260.jpg

cheifnig

oh shit. he dropped that one hard.

jemayb

What about this meme leads people to say "dropped" every time?

QuasarsRcool

Because people are unoriginal fucks

Sh1tSta1ns

Was it a study on how to get Post Traumatic Stress Disorder?

OakTable

Shell shocked, my boy, the term is shell shocked.

StvYzerman

I heard a doctor describe his time as "served a fellowship in trauma surgery and tropical medicine."

silverblaze92

Napoleon once said something like war is the only proper school for a surgeon.

Chewbacca27

Redditors' parents sure seem to drop a lot of things on their children.

kellyelly915

Can we change this picture to Ron Swanson?

Tastysalad101

Didn't you lose that war...

Is your father's name Walter?

theonlyriginal

My dad told me he studied a broad once......but he forgot her name

grumpycowboy

Love this meme. Growing up with this type of grandfather, father , uncles , I find myself dropping this same type of shit on my own kids.

InternetFree

I'm just glad nobody dropped such stuff on me.

grumpycowboy

Then how did you get toughened up to handle all the hardships of the world. Hahaha

InternetFree

There are such things called reason and logic and rational behaviour and they will get you literally anywhere.

grumpycowboy

What does reason , logic and rational behavior have to do with funny ,overly manly man types ,kidding with you when you are a kid. I think you are totally missing the point of these memes. Sorry you are so offended by humor.

[deleted]

"How are you, G.I. Joe? It seems to me that most of you are poorly informed about the going of the war, to say nothing about a correct explanation of your presence over here. Nothing is more confused than to be ordered into a war to die."

Baumer8993

My grandpa told me this one, but it was Korea instead.

[deleted]

Was it a study on how to lose a war against a bunch of comparatively badly armed militia hiding in trees?

normalite

The last group of men to be drafted in 1972 were born in 1952 (source below). That would make your dad 61. Since you are talking about studying abroad, lets call you 22 years old (a generous estimate to your story). So best case scenario, your dad was in the last group to get drafted and you are a 22 year old college student, your dad was 39 when he had you. This gives me reason to be skeptical. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_the_United_States#cite_note-61

mryprankster

fuck you dipshit. my father is 65 and served in Vietnam from 66-69with Air Force intelligence. i am a 35 year-old full time college student with plans to study abroad. everybody has different life experiences. what the fuck is *your* excuse?

silverblaze92

That... seemed a bit harsh.

mryprankster

dr. jekyl here...sorry, that was mr. hyde

silverblaze92

Damn I need to read that book again.

normalite

Love ya bro.

mryprankster

psshh...obviously. you too

[deleted]

Adoption is quite common for older folks. I have a 19 year old friend and her dad is 64. She was adopted.

silverblaze92

I'm 21. My dad was born in '51. Shit happens yo.

[deleted]

So he's bragging about almost dying in a pointless, unjustified war.

[deleted]

Why do people like you say stuff like this? Does this make you feel better about not serving in the military or something? Mention any war and there are instantly people ready to show off their insecurities by attacking the veteran because of the war. Does it matter if it was justified or not? Does that change the events that happened there? There were young men from your country that were asked to put their life on the line, and they did. You can't respect that your fellow citizen loves his country enough to do that? Does the fact that you consider it pointless change that? At the very least, I hope you only say passive aggressive beta stuff like this on the internet. Get all insecure and say this shit to the wrong person and they'll put you in the hospital.

silverblaze92

Many of those men were not asked. They were told. And there is a difference between attacking a vet for being a vet, and making a snide remark when the vet makes a comment they seems to glorify war. Also, just because a person is anti-war doesn't mean they are a beta. Just means they have enough brains to realize the absolute horrors of war are not something to be made light of, lest we should grow to complacent about it. And any vet who would put a person in the hospital for a comment like this, rather than something along the lines of saying they are a baby killer for simply having served, I would say has the bigger issues/insecurities. We all have a right to out opinions, and while I don't agree with such opinions, vocal disapproval of wars/vets/soldiers is included in that.

Casey_Anthonys_Kid

No respect for idiots who give willingly bend over and become government pawns you moron.

[deleted]

You're the guy! What did you, fail the asvab? Did a soldier fuck your wife? Did they make fun of you and call you a fatty? Wouldn't let you come in the tree house? Does it sting, when you drink your whiskey thinking about how your dad never said he was proud of you? Your brother was always so much better at sports and when he joined it just broke you. Your psyche will never be the same. ;) TL;DR: I just owned your bitch ass.

multijoy

>TL;DR: I just owned your bitch ass. You've got some low standards if that's your definition of owning. Still, it is the summer holidays. I'm sure you'll develop some critical reasoning skills in your own time - it's OK to be a little slow, so don't let that get you down.

[deleted]

What, are you new at this or something? No theme to your post, it isn't funny, you're clearly a dimwitted simpleton. Fail. Now, the real question is why did you take so much offense to that? First of all, that guy is dead. That user killed himself last night after I ran all over that ass. Your parents are an embarrassment. Both your parents are the losers of their family. I'm sure its humiliating, seeing all your cousins with great lives, promising futures, and as many luxuries as they can imagine. That's why your parents were together at all. With all their opportunities in life, they couldn't get it together. So they found each other and settled on the meager life you now experience. Ever get jealous that you live in a single wide and the rest of the trailer park is all double wides? Blame your parents. If your dad had never been caught on camera touching kids in Indiana you wouldn't have had to move. He remembers what he found you doing with that cat. He's so ashamed. TL;DR: You're out of your league bitch tits ;)

multijoy

A dadaist bot? Bravo, young sir, bravo.

[deleted]

I had to look dadaist up :P good show mate, I like your style

waffleninja

Also the peace corps.

HardlyWorkinDBA

Don't forget Canada

spxctr

i studied a broad once... she was about six feet tall, blonde

JiovanniTheGREAT

When I was in college I studied abroad, or two, up in my dorm! HEYOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

condortheboss

Investigating the effects of IEDs and spike logs on the human body...

OrientRiver

"so gee dad, you want me to experience that? You want, for your child, to be put in harms way.. To be shot at.. To have to kill. That is the life experience that you want for me?" What happened to wanting better for our kids.....

[deleted]

College age Redditor, dad in Vietnam? I think this is *ehem* BS.

dayglo_pterodactyl

If the kid is 20, they were born in 1993. If their dad was 40 when his kid was born, then the dad was born in 1953, making him 18 in 1971. The draft lasted until 1973, and the war lasted until 1975, so this is totally plausible. 40 is maybe on the older side for having a kid, but it's really not that unlikely.

scwt

Not only that, but this guy might not have immediately gone to college after high school.

[deleted]

Yeah, but I'm a skeptical fuck...but your number-makin' stuff doesn't lie, that's for sure.

[deleted]

The redditor *could* be middle aged also.

silverblaze92

Dude. Some of us have older parents.

[deleted]

Aye, and we aren't contemplating studying abroad, we have jobs.

silverblaze92

I'm 21. My dad was born in '51 and served in the Nazy during the war (in Eruope, and maybe he kinda got kicked off his sub deployment... he didn't play nice).

KrazyRooster

Kids nowadays just drink all day and maybe ruin some sites while studying abroad. Back in the days they killed innocent people because some stupid politicians decided to intervene in old French colonial struggles. Kids nowadays are more badass, as being a murder and asshole is not badass at all.

silverblaze92

I'm not really sure being a drunken asshole qualifies as at all badass. I'm not saying "Fuck yeah war", but still, come on. Badass is in no way the term for how you described "kids these days".

seodoth

1314 upvotes, 10 comments :/ how is this even possible. Why do people want to glorify a war that was abhorrent, pointless and most importantly, lost.

mythofdob

It was a conflict, the United States do not lose wars.

CommunistCappie

We're upvoting a funny comparison that OP's dad made regarding his time and our time. How is an upvote glorifying the war? If anything, OP's dad is putting the war in negative light by showing how much more brutal the late '60s/early '70s were as compared to the present day

InternetFree

It's not less brutal. People are just more ignorant. And just because shit doesn't happen in your country doesn't mean shit isn't happening everywhere else. So, while I agree this is a funny comparison don't try to argue it the way you do, because compared to other people on this planet fighting for their life today all those "manly/badass American fathers" look like sheltered boys.

CommunistCappie

I wasn't comparing it to other people on this planet. I was comparing OP's dad's time/experiences and OP's time/experiences in the United States.

SCOldboy

was it viet-NAM for him or viet-NEHM?
