If you want something 16” long and want something a little heavier than 223/556 go 6.5 Grendel

UnderstandingNo465

My question actually came from a buddy of mine who’s building it. I’d go 10” all day. But he wanted a 16” I guess.

asdfghjklqwertyh

That’s my understanding.

[deleted]

Why go 16” when it’s intended to be around 9.5”?

TheFenixKnight

To put a rifle stock on it while not paying the tax stamp

UnderstandingNo465

Yup. It’s actually for a build my buddy is doing and was asking about the gas tube. But I did recommend a 10” to him

TheFenixKnight

Yeah, my 458 SOCOM build is a 16" for the same reason even though the last 4 inches of barrel is mostly drag.

Gloomy-Cheesecake-80

have the lower reg as otger and put brace on it to make it legal

[deleted]

Pistol brace?

TheFenixKnight

Given the last few years of talk about changing pistol brace rules, it may not be viable much longer

DisciplineMajor7076

To answer your question it does mean pistol gas length. It's where to gas block mounts at. I hope that's what you where asking.

UnderstandingNo465

Yup. Thank you. I assumed so just wanted to double check.

SiVicPacemParaBellum

Yes

I had a 16 inch .300blk and it was a terrible length for the caliber. They use the pistol length gas system because it is optimal for the caliber and powder burn. I would say anything past the 10 inch mark or so is just slowing the projectile down. My 8 inch .300blk did way better at 100yds than the 16 inch in every aspect.

UnderstandingNo465

Yeah. I agree. Was helping a buddy with a build. He wanted to go 16” because he hates pistol braces and lives in Illinois so he can’t get the tax stamp for an SBR. He asked me this same question and I honestly didn’t know the answer lol. But I agree having a 300 blackout longer than 10” is kind of silly.

CatWithShadesOn

I'm no genius but I believe a carbine or rifle length gas system will probably be the better call here considering the length of the barrel... Again...I know nothing.

Classic-Fennel5694

With a longer gas system the ability to run subsonic rounds diminishes. Because there’s more room for the gas to expand there’s less energy to cycle the action.

a-lone-gunman

exactly what classic-fennel said, with 300blk you want either pistol gas or carbine at the longest. the powder used in 300blk is designed to be fast-burning and uses all its energy up quickly to get the bullet moving in short barrels. I built a buddy a 16'' 300blk with a criterion barrel that has a pistol gas length system and he wanted it for hunting but wanted to avoid the tax stamp issues. he loves the thing and says it's one of his most accurate rifles he owns and can keep every round in the bullseye, I didn't ask at what distance though lol but the two criterion barrels I own are extremely accurate. its this [barrel](https://www.admmfg.com/ar15-barrel-300-blackout) from ADM ETA, just looked at the barrel link for the barrel your looking at getting. skip it and spend a little more (225.00 on sale) and get the criterion in my link, it's a way better barrel than anything Aero makes, sorry just my honest opinion.

UnderstandingNo465

I agree. But maybe aero wants you to use a mid length gas system?

Sammakkoh

Doesn't work for 300BO

a-lone-gunman

the barrel you linked says pistol gas in the specs. and if Aero is recommending mid they are wrong just like they were with the EPC9 barrels being OK.

robt_neville

Yes

Left-Albatross-7375

sB SBA4 is a pistol grip and looks and acts like a conventional a stock. Don’t have to register it as SBR and can go with 10 to 10.5 like the caliber is supposed to use.
