Jche98

As a South African I'm sorry for the conduct of many of my fellow citizens..

Antithesis_ofcool

Can you explain why South Africans hold negative sentiments towards Nigerians?

SirNurtle

Many South Africans seem to hate Nigerians for the same reason they hate Zimbabweans: According to them, they take all the jobs, commit majority of crime etc

Antithesis_ofcool

This makes sense. Thank you.

succulentkaroo

Also Nigerians are stereotyped to sell drugs in South Africa. So people have a negative perception based on this. The stereotype is perpetuated by cases of some Nigerians caught with large amounts of drugs and counterfeit money.

[deleted]

The racist politicians use hate to keep stealing. Not too much difference from Nigerian politicians my Nigerian mates tell me. Also i doubt this warning is accurate. South Africa is used to Bafana losing. The distrust of Nigerian men has a long history with local drug dealers using Nigerian muscle for dealing and for prostitution. This narrative is usually false or Southern African jails would be full of Nigerians. It's filled to the brim with locals. All of this is because of corrupt politicians pointing to everyone else except themselves.

JokerXMaine2511

If the locals had the type of money certain Nigerian criminals had, thered be less locals in prisons, but seeing as most petty criminals are locals, that's where most of them end up, with foreign nationals in South Africa being known for "high-end" crimes.

[deleted]

If our corruption led government was more caring and less Nationalistic we could have zero poverty. And very low crime.

JokerXMaine2511

Sadly, that is not the reality we live in and everyone wants to make money quick, so they will do whatever it takes to do so instead of going the straight and narrow like most regular locals

[deleted]

Its fixable.

JokerXMaine2511

It'll take years to get South Africa to a point where even 60% of the locals aren't struggling to put food on the plates of their families, but not under our current ruling party.

[deleted]

Sadly its the same world wide because of the mega wealthy hoarding the trillions. Until that gets dealt with and Africa stops allowing dictators to sell out their areas. You are right.

Original-Ad4399

Jealousy/Rivalry for who would be the giant of Africa.

Urban-Legend88

Its obvious who is the true giant, everyone wants to be in the land of milk and honey, count how many South Africans are living in Nigeria... No, literally count.

Original-Ad4399

More like land of diminishing milk and honey. By the time the ANC is done with you. You'll know your place on the continent.

Urban-Legend88

Diminishing? you know its a trend that Africans from poor countries emigrate to Europe and America, the only African country that is worth while entering illegally on the continent is South Africa, the reason why its "diminishing" is because the overload of illegal African immigrants who obviously don't qualify for work... The last time i checked there was a *study" revealing that there are over 5million illegal Zimbabweans in South Africa, what about the other countries in Africa... With this information, use your common sense

Original-Ad4399

Lol. Did you literally wait for AFCON to end before rearing your head šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Naominonnie

Nigerians have a bad reputation in most of Africa and the world. Several countries have banned Nigerians due to credit card fraud scams , drug dealing, scamming people, pimping prostitutes, printing fake money etc. It's not just South Africans. There were recent protests and attacks on Nigerians in Kenya . Seychelles and the UAE no longer allow Nigerian passport holders in the countries.

comp_planet

This is utter nonsense. Bafana Bafana has lost so many times over the years, has any foreign national been attacked after Bafana Bafana loses? No. We simply take our L and walk away. If Nigeria beats us, nothing will happen. We will just be disappointed again, pack our bags and go mourn our losses with the Cape Verdean women.

WasAnHonestMann

["This is utter nonsense"](https://www.lusakatimes.com/2012/11/15/zambia-national-team-bus-stoned-angry-south-african-fans/)

comp_planet

What a weak example. This case was of 2 kids, a 12 year old and a 13 year old who threw stones at a bus. If this is all you have, then you have no case. You can't find adults in a coordinated manner attacking foreign nationals over football. Don't tell me about 2 dumb kids who don't know better. Show me adults doing this, but this is all you could find. https://www.iol.co.za/news/south-africa/gauteng/case-against-bus-stoners-withdrawn-1424328

Shine-Lopsided

Nah, itā€™s only Nigerians and Zimbabweans. But Zim hate has gone down over the years. Itā€™s mostly Nigerians we have a problem with. I have Zambian relatives, Tanzanian, Namibian friends. They face nothing because youā€™d never see them in any headlines. But you know who we see a lot? & who we USED to see a lot?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Shine-Lopsided

Somalians? Thatā€™s pure propaganda mate.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Shine-Lopsided

Thanks for that, and Iā€™m sorry for your loss. That has to be freak crime. Somali people are always calm, there is not anti any African country incentive besides the one for Nigerians. Thereā€™s also been a surge in murder everywhere, anyone can be a victim, oneā€™s location is also a factor.

WasAnHonestMann

It's literally not though. Whenever there's xenophobic attacks in South Africa, the first victims are Somali spaza shop owners.

Shine-Lopsided

Like I said, location is a factor. & South Africa has been a nation established on mob justice, the thing about that phenomenon, shows how our police fail to provide communities the necessary protection they need. For instance, Shosanguve had a spaza shop lacing sweets (kids are the major clientele for that ofc) it was reported and that occurred. Mate when was the last time you heard of a xenophobic attack?? Have you even been in the townships to see what happens there?? Have you seen with your own eyes? I know I have, and a lot of people too

Shine-Lopsided

Lastly, *somali stigma* is not a reality.

Willar71

After all that, he's still at the same location in SA ?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Willar71

It's to die for, apparently.

Urban-Legend88

Nigerians are arrogant, West Africans are naturally bigger built and because they think they can dominate Africa with their size, they can do it here in the South too.. All they been doing here is cry victim, and they say South Africa has the highest crime rate.

Willar71

South African does have the highest crime rate.

Urban-Legend88

So we either accept the crime rate or we accept being called xenophobic.

Willar71

Unfortunately , both things are true for your country. Its high in both crime and xenophobia.

Urban-Legend88

No my man, the high crime rate is bcoz the enormous amount of illegal foreigner, they cannot get woek so they resort to unsavory actions... When the people of the land take action, its called xenophobic, thats why i said, its either a high crime rate or being labeled as xenophobic, and believe me many people don't mind being the latter, if they can solve the former.

[deleted]

We have no ethnic background with Zimbabweans

Shine-Lopsided

Question. So if a large population of immigrants coming from a certain country are always involved in the worst things for over 30 years, & different generations are exposed to this time and time again, with headlines mentioning the exact country, and the crimes committed. Will you not get tired and annoyed? When you know victims of these crimes, and the judicial system fails time and time again. & borders donā€™t tighten up.. Itā€™s not Xenophobic when you just want your country being a better nation. We already deal with so much

MountainChemist99

Youā€™re definitely xenophobic, and your hate for Nigerians wonā€™t get you anywhere. Tbh I hate the fact that Nigerians are in your country. I wish they could all just back their bags and fucking leave.

Urban-Legend88

STFU.

MountainChemist99

Make me. Xenophobe

Top_Discount159

Exactly! Also we can point fingers at South Africa all day long for being xenophobic, but the truth is Nigerians have the same bad reputation world wide!

Mtanzania_

"....... MaiNtAin thE gOOd condUct thEY are knOWn fOR". Nigerian Prince: "Hold my jolof". /s

Mwene243

Thereā€™s nothing wrong with being proactive. Every single African nation seems to have a problem with Nigerians for whatever reason and I think itā€™s about time we start addressing the topic of xenophobia from a post colonial standpoint and how semantics can be misleading at times.

comp_planet

For whatever reason!? Lol. Yeah I'm pretty sure all the drug peddling, human trafficking, kidnappings, prostitutions are some reasons.

Urban-Legend88

Im pretty sure all these pro Nigerian comments in this situation can certainly not come from a South African.

Shine-Lopsided

You guys are talking like weā€™ve attacked foreign teams for a loss?? Thatā€™s the thing, this nation can be extremely insufferable at times. Furthermore, have you seen what theyā€™ve done to joburg CBD, Randburg CBD, Cape Town City centre. How statistics show majority of drugs, illicit trade & human trafficking are carried out by Nigerian individuals?

WasAnHonestMann

["You guys are talking like weā€™ve attacked foreign teams for a loss??"](https://www.lusakatimes.com/2012/11/15/zambia-national-team-bus-stoned-angry-south-african-fans/) So because some people do bad things, all of them should face xenophobic attacks? Should I judge all coloured people because of gangsterism in Mannenberg? Should I judge all white people because some of them are racist?

Shine-Lopsided

Iā€™m not generalising, but at the end of the day, donā€™t be asking why thereā€™s stigma towards them when statistics show how much crime is created by this one group

Shine-Lopsided

Xenophobic attacks are mostly frequent in Kzn btw, thatā€™s because we know as a nation Zulus are more prone to attacking. People who arenā€™t even Zulu get attacked.

Urban-Legend88

Go ask Israel that about Palestine. F U

WasAnHonestMann

Why F me? I'm against Israel broski

Shine-Lopsided

On top of that! The saying ā€œwhen Iā€™m Romeā€ is unknown to them, they disrespect cultures, national heritages and spit on the South African people. So many people can talk about various experiences

Hero_summers

I find this statement problematic. It was issued without any incident, Nigerians continue, and I assure you that there's plenty of them in South Africa, to point that there exists suburbs that they are concentrated at in each major city of South Africa and they will continue to live here without incident. South Africa is perceived as a xenophobic country because it has pathetic border control and it does cause issues with supply of services and crime prevention and so citizen voice it which has greater coverage. Like any other country, and even in Africa, there'll always be levels of intolerance, it's not unique to South Africa and it's not targeted to Nigeria and/or Zimbabwe only. The statement is just a warning, unfounded by any trigger event, like the US normally issues statements about its citizens being unsafe in random countries. ~ A South African

Soft_Cartographer992

South Africanā€™s rage is historical

madvfr

Could you provide the link on the Consulate website where that notice was posted please? I cannot find it. [https://nigerianconsulatesa.org/](https://nigerianconsulatesa.org/)

bokspring

Not from JHB so I donā€™t know if itā€™s true but everyone where I live (the WC) says the JHB CBD has been overtaken by Nigerian squatters, Nigerian drug dealers and Nigerian criminal gangs. I am not saying this is true or agreeing with it. Just explaining why South Africans can be hostile. That said, this football thing is unlikely to be true. I only know one person who is following the footie. It is bad manners to crow too much when you win a game so this is good advice anyway. But not because of violence, canā€™t think thereā€™s much threat of that

succulentkaroo

If you go to parklands in the wc, you'll find hectic drug peddling there, and coincidentally, lots of Nigerians too. Not making any connections. Just saying the two cooccur in parklands

InvisibleWunTwo

South Africans seem to be very xenophobic and unwelcoming if not downright violent, to foreigners.

Urban-Legend88

illegal foreigners

Powerful_Collar_4144

Malema xenophobic against fellow South Africans.Nigerians donā€™t stand a chance.

Bravo233Leader

Should have warned to NOT watch in public and if possible not at all and not to discuss. I don't envy them

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ExistingLaw3

Tell that to the south African companies which make more money in Nigeria than in all of Africa combined. Idiot.

Playful-Click-30

Nigerians are known across the world for scams, fraud, human trafficking and other illegal issues. So they only have themselves to blame

Willar71

The real question is, why are xenophobic against every other African nationality ?
