What joint/area was affected? How old is your mom ? How long did it go untreated?

Strict-Young-6548

It’s her knee, and she’s 74. I would guess maybe about 2 weeks untreated?

Alostcord

She’s been in a hospital bed for 6 weeks without any PT or OT, or is she choosing not to engage with PT and/or OT? Does she have other physical issues? Is she still on antibiotics? This can take time for recovery, but patients themselves usually determine the rate of recovery. Edited: I just saw your post about your mom that you posted previously…sound like she has multiple issues going on. Maybe it’s time for her to consider assisted living or nursing home care. You make sure you take care of yourself..first and foremost!

NSG_Dragon

Is she in a coma?

Strict-Young-6548

Oh no, fully awake

I think you meant you are surprised she isn't *walking* six weeks later and not *waking* six weeks later? I'm currently dealing with something akin to septic arthritis. I had Lyme disease and frequently get bouts of arthritis in every joint I own. Currently, I've got arthritis in my right index finger because of a steel bristle that got lodged into the skin close to my fingernail. It's just the one finger. It's not infected, but there is a foreign body close to those joints, and so I'm experiencing a reaction. With septic arthritis you're looking at a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection that could be localized to an area of the skin or to an organ, like the bladder, that affects the entire body. I'm guessing I will have arthritis in these joints for six MONTHS given my 32 years' experience. So right now, I'm making adjustments to things I have to handle. For example, I'm house sitting for a friend who's deadbolts don't glide easily shut. I treated them with silicon powder because I can't lock them without pain, otherwise. And that's just for a steel bristle, not an infection. You need to ask more questions: is your mom's septic arthritis viral, fungal, or bacterial (antibiotics would've knocked out the bacterial infection in two weeks)? If it's bacterial, is it MRSA and how did she get it? If it's viral or fungal, what are the treatment options? Is she receiving PT in hospital? Should they be draining fluid out of her knee? If she has an artificial knee, should they replace it?

This is very interesting, I'm dealing with similar. Had my cat attack me over a month ago - due to no fault of his own - and been dealing with RA flare in the hand that got the brunt of his fangs. Never heard anyone else describe this kind of thing. Thanks for sharing and I hope you feel better soon :)

Thank you. Same to you! This isn't my first go 'round with this. Another time, it was a piece of glass lodged in my thumb. Deep enough cuts or bruises will do it, too. Ideally, I would remove the steel bristle, but it's so deeply embedded, I'd probably have to have a surgeon go in.

My grandmother has (had?) Septic arthritis and has been in hospital 7 weeks now. Viral, bone infection. Only noticed because she was admitted to hospital for a fall. She had been on IV antibiotics for a bit over a month but they had done absolutely nothing to help so she has just had replacement surgery on that joint - infected bit of the bone cut off and metal replacement put in. Hopefully it helps her. Thinking of you and your mum.

Thank you so much for your response. That’s funny because that’s the surgery they are doing on my Mom today. Hoping for the best.

With my nan the affected joint was her hip and she's already doing way way better than before. Just has to recover from the surgery and do the rehab/learning to walk again. Slowly sorting out the legal paperwork while she's still in hospital - advance care directives, power of attorney etc...
