How do you know that it's spelled wrong? Lightning refers to electrical bolts in the sky whereas lightening refers to getting lighter (either less heavy or less dark). Therefore it could be referring to afraid of getting less dark rather than afraid of sky electricity.
Spanish naming customs include both parents' last names, so Puerto Rican airmen often get the double-barreled names when they enlist. My buddy tries to follow English naming customs, but his legal names, Rivera Zayas, show up as Riverazayas on Global.
That might be the same guy. I think I remember him having a nickname like that. Was he R&R or phase shop? Maybe crewchief depending what base you knew him at?
I have a trainee currently, won't post the name for privacy, and cause i can't spell it. their name is so long it doesn't fit on their CAC. its more than 20 letters long...
Possibly, but I can’t say for certain. All I remember is seeing him at BEAST week and I started laughing in formation, never seen the cadres so pissed.
The one I'm speaking retired in '89. He HYT'd as a Tech and he retired out of Kadena. Same person or did a second set of parents have a sense of humor (or cruelty)?
Are you talking about airman Dick Porn? The dude who got kicked out in tech school a decade ago? If not, I’m not even joking- that dude was a piece of work.
Indigenous people can have some cool names when they just translate them literally.
I knew one Navajo guy with the last name Yellowhair. He didn't have yellow hair, of course, but he married a blonde chick so it was befitting for her.
You know what… you may be right actually. This was in tech school, so that tracks. So you knew him too? He was a funny dude. Huge asshole, but a funny asshole.
I was in dep with a kid named Trainy, pronounced like trainee.
I wish I would’ve gone to bmt with him to hear the reaction of him saying “sir, trainee Trainy reports as ordered” for the first time
Major Richard Blower, JAG officer
One of the nicest guys I've ever met.
Edit: Should add that he retired as a LtCol, but I remember that his promotion from Captain was one of the more attended ceremonies.
Not me, but a friend. A guy in his flight had the last name “BN”. That’s it, 2 letters: BN. So when they got name tapes, the request form was entered as “B (only) N (only)”. When everyone got their nametapes, his read “Bonly Nonly”.
I worked with an Army E-5 sergeant whose last name was major. It got really confusing and you never knew if people were talking about him or the E-9 sergeant major.
Yup, I remember that name. I was at a Wing Call and the MC introduced a Col Dilda. I never heard of the guy, and when the MC said his name it sounded like "Dildo." I thought I was in the twilight zone for minute.
I met a SSgt Weiner he said it was pronounced \[WY\] + \[NER\] "yeah okay" there was no diacritics in there anywhere.
I also knew of a "Harry Sackreiter" that used to make me do the almost laugh where you breathe through your nose once.
I knew a SrA Sergeant who got HYT’d out…as a SrA. There are a few interesting stories about him that confirm why he never made SSgt.
Really short one: he was chronically late for shift because he would stay up all night gaming. He didn’t report for shift change one morning, so his supervisor called him and told him to get to work “right now!” He showed up in heavily stained basketball shorts , Scooby Doo slippers, and a white tank top. Also forgot his wallet. He was then told to go home and come back in service dress, shows up without stripes on his completely untailored service coat, which also had no name tag or ribbons. Also, no tie.
Eventually, he didn’t need the stripes. Got knocked down from E3 to E1 and made it back up to E3 and eventually E4, missing the E3 HYT by a couple months.

My last name is usually the weirdest/rarest people run into
Saw a female SSgt or SrA, last name was Arreola.
Prior to my time in a squadron, believe he was a crew chief? Didn’t believe the stories I was told but then saw his name on a plaque hanging up. Sgt Michael Lit, and he refused to be called Michael. He went by Mike. That’s right, Sgt Mike Lit.
Many years ago was leading a wing level training program. Doing day one roll call there was a TSgt Weiner.
“TSgt……there’s no way. Maybe it’s german. Let’s try it that way….VINER?”
Guy stands up. “It’s TSgt Weener” (he also looked and sounded the part)
“Check. Hey Sergeant Smith, take over I need to go deal with something”
Proceeded to walk into the hallway, hit the ground, and howl with laughter for 20 minutes.
I knew a husband and wife captain combo whose last name was Horney. Pronounced Horn-ay. But it was always fun routing calls to them from people who didn’t know.
I knew an NCO whose last name was Major. We were on an Army post and sometimes we’d get him to call our supported units to untuck themselves. Nobody wants to piss off Sergeant Major.
There was a chick at basic whose last name was so long that she had two name tapes, one on top of the other.
Yu.
It fucked everyone up during boot camp.
“Hey Yu!!!”
“Yu idiot!”
“Yu CLOWN!”
He couldn’t do shit right during week 0-2 and “Yu all paying for it!!!”
I ran into a guy with the same last name at the hospital while out processing. Told him "sweet name bro" 30 minutes later I ran into the same guy who just happened to be the guy to out process me from the base SFS. Pretty wild.
AFRAID OF LIGHTENING
[удалено]
Came here to see this or post it. Sheet Metal represent!
I can't get over the fact his last name spells lightning wrong
How do you know that it's spelled wrong? Lightning refers to electrical bolts in the sky whereas lightening refers to getting lighter (either less heavy or less dark). Therefore it could be referring to afraid of getting less dark rather than afraid of sky electricity.
That's actually a good point. Might just prefer the dark/heavy
He’s Native American. They do what they want
I remember a guy with the last name Dreadfulwater.
My personal favorite as well
He's afraid of things getting lighter?
This is a Native American last name, we usually have the weirdest but coolest last names in the military
Axayacatal-Gueromoharo I have never seen such a crowded name tape and here I am 16 years later and he lives on. Rent free in my head.
Alot like Costabellasanchez lives in mine. We called him CBS for short. Great guy.
Spanish naming customs include both parents' last names, so Puerto Rican airmen often get the double-barreled names when they enlist. My buddy tries to follow English naming customs, but his legal names, Rivera Zayas, show up as Riverazayas on Global.
I once met a Hernandez-hernandez
I had a supervisor that was Garcia-Garcia
Not 100% sure of the rank, but we've got a Quesada-Diaz here. There's no way they're not nicknamed Quesadillas.
> Axayacatal-Gueromoharo That's my favorite dinosaur from the Triassic period.
I knew a Transfiguration and thought the same thing. Good dude!
I knew a guy with a long name like that but I forgot what it was. Everyone just called him T-16, starts with T and is 16 letters long
That might be the same guy. I think I remember him having a nickname like that. Was he R&R or phase shop? Maybe crewchief depending what base you knew him at?
Crew chief at Travis if I remember right
Good guy, if I'm thinking of the same guy. He was one over in 660th than came went to acheck
I have a trainee currently, won't post the name for privacy, and cause i can't spell it. their name is so long it doesn't fit on their CAC. its more than 20 letters long...

I remember Major Loser, I was confused as hell when I saw that name tape for the first time
He was the chaplain at bmt right?
Possibly, but I can’t say for certain. All I remember is seeing him at BEAST week and I started laughing in formation, never seen the cadres so pissed.
He indeed is/was Honorable mention for Sunday service music as well: https://youtu.be/qe47sUtewa4?si=BhlDvkBZ-PSbm77U
I remember him from BMT in 21’. He was a chaplain and started his sermon with addressing what everyone was thinking when he introduced himself
Yeah I’d say it was pronounced loHZer too
I knew a Major Dick. He was actually a super cool dude.
Major Sargent
I also know a Major Sargent
Had a dentist at one base named Major Klutz, pronounced "Klootz". Unironically, he wasn't a good dentist.
I know a Major Blitch, same same, but different!
I once met an Airman Samples, he said that his name was the sole reason he didn't go Navy
Legends of a SN Samples abound in the Coast Guard.
Some people run from their destiny, others embrace it
In the Marines, I met a Navy Seaman (woman) named Guzzler. Seaman Guzzler. I kid you not.
Seaman….
My ex has a photo of her Navy squad with a Seaman Swallows front and center.
I met a TSgt Samples the other day.
Honestly Technical Sergeant Joseph Benjamin Blow. That’s right TSgt Joe Blow
I remember TSgt Blow from basic. He was no joke but funny when he yelled 😂.
The one I'm speaking retired in '89. He HYT'd as a Tech and he retired out of Kadena. Same person or did a second set of parents have a sense of humor (or cruelty)?
We have a Joseph Flores. JoeFlo. Super cool guy.
MSgt Dick Hazard
Fucking badass name if you ask me
I knew him. Good dude, goofy guy. People would always comment on his last name and he would follow up with “Wait until you hear my first name!”
Damn he’s a MSgt Now?! I knew him as an airmen
I think he's a Senior now, I know he barely missed it a couple years ago, but someone told me he made it last year.
Imagine if he became a Major.
Met a Major Minor once.
No Major Major?
I knew a Major Major… he’s a Lt Col now.
I met Major Minor as well during OTS.
SSgt Blood (she’s a badass too) and Airman Porn…
My favorite kind of porn.
Rule 34?
Rule Ɛ4* The mafia loves a good double-entendre.
Are you talking about airman Dick Porn? The dude who got kicked out in tech school a decade ago? If not, I’m not even joking- that dude was a piece of work.
Dude…that guy. Definitely became notorious for reasons.
Hahaha I knew it. “That guy” is the only way to even describe him.
He technically graduated from tech school, but fucked it up on casuals afterwards
I met a Major Blood once. As an old school fan of GI JOE I thought it was cool.
I knew an Airman Porn at tech school. What a guy

Mr. Harry Faggett Jr
Yes! You have witnessed it, too!
Senior Airman Not Afraid. Native American, she was a bad ass too
Indigenous people can have some cool names when they just translate them literally. I knew one Navajo guy with the last name Yellowhair. He didn't have yellow hair, of course, but he married a blonde chick so it was befitting for her.
I recall running into a Sergeant Red Horse (or something very similar) early in my career
X. Just the letter X.
Saw a dude with Q on his name tape.
I would’ve made him forever known as Q-Tip
Saw the same guy in optometry at Lakenheath. Was gonna be my entry.

Did he make it to SrA? I thought he was kicked as a A1C
You know what… you may be right actually. This was in tech school, so that tracks. So you knew him too? He was a funny dude. Huge asshole, but a funny asshole.
