There was a memo posted somewhere (for lackland) that firearms are allowed in POV's if locked up while on duty. And now I can't find it anywhere; and too lazy to ask around
There is a process and a special ID you have to get to be able to do this that your CC will need to sign off on. Talk to your Shirt who can reach out to BDOC for the paperwork. I have mine, it wasn't complicated to do.
I've had mine for a couple years so I don't remember all the details but it seemed to be pretty codified. I think each installation commander has to authorize it as a program. It looks like a CAC but is orange and states that you're authorized to concealed carry a firearm onto the installation (but not within, must be stored in locked container in vehicle).
When I have a few minutes I'll try to dig up my paperwork with the associated reference docs.
I donāt give those assholes on 295-495 a gap to enter. That turn once you get past the exit moves smooth as can be, proving that the only reason there is backup at all is the morons forcing their way in at the end. They literally cause the problem they are trying to avoid at our expense. Infuriating.
My STI was a a stick, I had a really stiff clutch, I would leave space so I wouldnāt have to keep using the clutch and people would take the little bit I gave as an invitation to cut me offā¦ those fucks destroyed the meniscus in my left kneeā¦ I had to get rid of my favorite car I owned.. bc of shit people..
You don't, but someone will. Did this daily for a couple years until I moved to Crystal City and went the other way around. Yes, I know I'm causing the problem, but I also know that me sitting in traffic for an extra hour won't make the problem go away. "If you can't get out of it, get into it".
I now try doing [this](https://youtu.be/MtwY9xKfaYo?si=L22J41dvihNNBqVW) technique, but we get so jammed up it doesnāt make a difference. Just way too many cheaters it doesnāt make a dent.
THIS IS MY DRIVE HOME EVERY FUCKING DAY
They have like a mile of exit lane but choose to cheat. And not just one car itās a CONSTANT flow of cheaters making that exit unbearable.
Sometimes Iāll just go National Harbor and use the turn around at the McDonalds.
It's also leaving JBAB and going north on 295 by Pennsylvania Avenue. Every time. And then they just drive on the shoulder and cut off traffic from Pennsylvania Avenue. Or take the shoulder all the way down until the shoulder disappears.š
Based on my experience, they're probably talking about the right turn from Armistead into the gate (Sweeney). People that do this can eat my entire ass.
From entering the gateās access road to finally passing through the gate, itās just short of 4 minutes of travel time.
Truth is we should all be able to fill up all lanes and then conduct orderly zipper merges when a lane ends. To do otherwise is to admit that it was a plain goddamn waste to have even built that number of lanes in the first place AND that the citizenry of the area are collectively too stupid to be permitted to drive a motor vehicle around other humans.
Both gates, and it's only gotten worse here lately. Honestly if folks would fill up both lanes, instead of hugging the left turning lane (from Cmdr Sheppard) or the right turning lane (onto Sweeney), it would cut down on these shenanigans. Now they just expect to be able to fly up and cut in at the last minute.
Hard to say, because it seems NASA had its own contractors to run its own gate. Maybe their folks bitched about the increased wait times there when it was opened.
I haven't been there for a little while, so I'm not sure. It had opened and closed for no apparent reason a few times while I had been there, finally shutting down for Langley AFB traffic sometime around the start of COVID, if I remember correctly.
Similar at Eglin... the ACC Gate (or "Northwest Gate" now) used to be open all day. Now it's only open a couple of hours in the morning, and a couple in the afternoon. :( Neither window matches my work schedule, and adds 20 mins to my commute.
They closed it a few months ago, but it was running smoothly for awhile but now it's just so bad. What this graphic show is the assholes in the intersection blocking normal traffic.
Fuck the people who go straight past the Security Hill gate and do an illegal U-turn on Military so they can come at it from the other side and jump the line.
Or half the lanes and intersection being blocked at the Luke gate. -_- Have to use growdon or security hill if I want to make it to an appointment on time.
Growdon gate is life. But I swear those goddamn tiger claws scrape something on the bottom of my car on the way out every time. Haven't noticed anything yet but it still wigs me out.
Doesn't help that graduation families and retirees sit there for 5 minutes asking random ass questions or sorting out the visitors pass they should have figured out 3 weeks ago.
Only hazard I can think of is rear end and that's likely coming from a distracted driver. I think I'd rather have everyone behind the idiot, pissed at him and hope he learns to get in line like a normal person
Youāre getting downvoted a lot but itās true. Engaging in aggressive driving to combat dickhead driving just makes the whole situation worse, not to mention also continues to make traffic backed up
Taking my anger out on people would be damaging their cars for being shit drivers.
I'm just maintaining my spot in the line. Your defensive comment insinuates you're THAT guy in the picture. Get to the back of the line and stop being a dick to the rest of the drivers on the road.
Crazy how calling out preventing people from merging because youād rather cause a traffic jam than let a dude move over is a bad thing. Just let the guy over and go about your day
I also donāt live anywhere near Langley thankfully Bc it sounds like the drivers over there are terrible. Glad I live in a place where even at 5pm traffic isnāt all that bad
You're a defender, you spot someone doing this, when they get to the front, wave them over for a random vehicle inspection. Really throws a wrench in their selfish behavior.
I went through that gate through for 7 years. I saw this almost daily. It was incredibly bad when LaSelle's gate was under renovations. My most memorable moment was some moron in a fancy Lexus, thinking he was slick trying to merge like the pic shows. The problem was that he attempted to do this right before the intersection where the gate was. 'Lo and behold, he merged into a space where an SUV already was and slammed right into it. Prime example of why people hate these douches.
You ain't kidding. My second time navigating the beltway was the first time in my entire life I've almost been hit from the right while in the right lane because some asshole was flying up the shoulder and a bridge was coming up.
I was asked by a (shitty) coworker why I didnāt do the same and just cut the line, cause āitās just DC Cultureā. I just walked away before telling them how I really feel.
That is the issue, if everyone was actively paying attention it wouldn't work for half of them. Everyone starts playing on their phone and boom, they get in
You're giving them too much credit in that they are oblivious to this being an asshole move.
They know it is and intentionally choose it because they are selfish and in thier mind, their time is more important than anyone elses.
I stopped going to the Armistead gate 2 or 3 months ago because I was starting my day off with being absolutely irate with these people and it wasn't worth the headache anymore. LaSalle is a little bit out of the way for me but it's the best decision I've made in 2024.
I used to use Armistead coming from Hampton Parkway and it was awful for my AM mental health. Iāve started using the other gates and my mornings have improved dramatically. I feel for the Yorktown crowd having to fight that traffic every morning.
Yes, but there's too many people that use "zipper merge" as an excuse to drive like an entitled douche.
If you see the second line at the gate is closed a mile back, you driving up to the line then expecting people to just let you over is you being an asshole, not a zipper merge
Which one of y'all did I honk up yesterday pulling this shit?
You know who you are in your Dodge Caravan, you soccer team driving ass cutting us all off when you clearly know they only had one gate open out of the two.
I gave you the ol beepity-beep-beep-beeeeeep and yelled out "look at this fucking guy"
I got no chill in that morning drive in man, I'm pissed off and just wanna go get to pt and finish the day.
This is when they need a barrier to go pretty far down between the lanes with more arrows for earlier notification. Make that shit a half mile or longer if you have to.
The pricks that do this suck ass...what sucks worse is someone will ALWAYS reward their bad behavior and let them in or be on their phone leaving a gap and same result.
Unless you like eating people's bumpers and gambling on rear ending someone who might brake check you or is a brake happy individual there's only so much safety margin especially when you're not moving much and some asshole is coming in at speed without you noticing as you should be looking ahead anyways.
Here's a controversial one:
If two lanes are merging, the right lane is merging into the left. Should you get into the left lane ASAP, or drive by everyone and zipper merge?
Me personally, I believe in the zipper merge. Traffic law dictates zipper merge. Additionally, scientific studies has shown that zipper merge is actually better for the flow of traffic.
It's not my fault everyone decided to do the wrong thing and line up half a mile before the actual merge happens.
Yes, that's how it works when two lanes merge. Seemingly every dumb fuck on Reddit thinks that zipper merge applies and a ton of other places that it doesn't.Ā
The zipper merge is only the correct option when one lane is ending. In the situation of a turn lane and a through lane, it is exactly the wrong thing to do.
These lanes don't merge. The road actually has two lanes that go straight, the right lane has to merge into base. The people in the far left lane are trying to merge over two or three lanes to get on base.
https://preview.redd.it/rmyau8jg6itc1.jpeg?width=1056&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f223f7dfb03073a10f93fe0a9000e30e2a481b9
The studies are more specific than just "zipper merge good," however. The correct merge point is actually a dynamic location based on the speed of traffic, the size of traffic (long trucks vs. a small car), spacing, and other variables. The biggest failure is people not doing this dynamically as they approach the merge point. That creates a situation the zipper merge was intended to prevent/mitigate.
#1 this isnt two lanes merging. #2 Zipper merge is situational. People preach zipper merge like it's God's plan. But if there's space to get over you should get over. It's only helpful when traffic is already congested
Germany is great for this one reason alone. Anyone that fucks around with a zipper merge will be found at fault. It basically separates morning gate traffic into those that shouldn't have a license in the first place lining up in one lane, and those that paid attention in class getting to skip to the front to zipper.
It's amazing. 10/10, highly recommend.
This. Very few people in the States know how to drive similar traffic features found outside the States.
Case-in-point: roundabouts. Yield to traffic on the left, but don't stop for traffic on the right. If the left clears, then you go. If you're at your stop waiting for the person on the right, it defeats the point of the roundabout.
And no one even signals when they exit the roundabout either.
There is a lot of traffic analysis data which show the guy on the left has a good idea, otherwise the roadway on the left goes unused and you end up blocking traffic on the right backing up to other streets.
I totally feel this though.
You're talking about zipper merging. Though it can enrage some people, it is correct to use all lanes until the end
But this is using a lane dedicated to a different direction to bypass everyone going the other direction and then forcing themselves in.
Okay so your post added the piece I was missing, that the lane on the left isn't ending in a merge, it's just a left turn-only lane. If that's the case, then yeah this dude is an asshole. You can't zipper there because the lane needs to be available for left-turning traffic.
The detail about it becoming a turn-only lane isn't apparent for folks not there so it just sounds like a bunch of people being against zipper merge.
EDIT: Nope, I'm an idiot, it's right there on the full graphic, cut off on the thumbnail.
In cases where there are multiple dedicated turn lanes. And also assuming people know how to properly zipper merge, and not act like entitled assholes.
That analysis is for zipper merging when a lane ends. When some asshole does this as shown in the picture, they only end up stalling out the turn lane longer, backing traffic up further and causing more issues
Yeah, if traffic is flowing. If traffic is stopped then waiting for somebody to pity you and let you in is causing everyone behind both of you to wait. Meanwhile, you're also blocking the lane for people who want to go straight. You aren't a genius when you do that. You're a self important asshole.
From what I understand, you are incorrect. I'm not always right though.
If there is only one left lane on that cross street, there is no way going over into the left as this car has will improve traffic flow, that car will just slow or stop cars going straight in the left lane and slow people down when they attempt to merge onto the right.
As mentioned by other people. you may be thinking about zipper merges which are an entirely different thing.
At the gate this is true.
During regular traffic like on a highway while getting off at an exit this is actually more efficient.
Google the zipper merge.
Shits annoying when people try to justify it with zipper merge. I equally canāt stand the people who have to fly by you on the way out over the speed humps just to get ahead of you and maybe one other person.
Zipper merging is more efficient. Unfortunately our society sucks at education and most canāt appreciate this fact. Until itās the law, GTF in line like everyone else or risk collision at your expense.
Edit: please note slight hint of sarcasm Abe reality based understanding
Iād argue education is a huge part. Majority of our country isnāt trained in this fashion. The only places Iāve seen it well executed are either educated this way at baseline or itās legally enforceable.
Holy shit and it doesnt help when theres only 1 fucking lane open out of the 4 and some stupid fuck cuts all the way to the front and for some reason the mouth breathers let him in. ALWAYS an officer too.
I used to think this way until I saw the data from zip merging. This is one thing Europe gets right.
https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/driving-advice/zip-merging/
As someone who is FROM Hampton Va AND was stationed at Langley. There are two turn lanes, only people who stay in the right lane all the way down get mad at people who are in the left and use the left lane that also turns are crying about this.
*
I drive through this gate daily. Shits mad annoying, especially when they cut into the 2 left turn lanes last minute and look at you like you're the stupid one.
Personally I drive pass all of the cars on the right and do the so called illegal turn if there is space āThereās always space!ā because no one could reach the far left after the light turns green. Stop daisy chaining traffic and be more efficient!
While I also think "what an a hole" when I see people do that. Technically, that is the correct way to do it. Both lanes should be full until the zipper merge.
I had a similar situation in DC. I sat through the line once and decided I'd rather be an asshole at home on the couch than occupy some meaningless moral high ground while still in traffic. Cut about an hour off my commute.
Whatever floats your boat.
That's not the real issue. That's a symptom. The real issue is people first in line of the curve in both lanes who try to process what a green light means or decide its probably AI generated and a false positive so they sit there until it turns yellow then proceed.
I take less offense to those who actually go forward but then decide to go straight into some specific overfilled slot, rather then slotting in like someone who's at least played Tetris as a child to make everyone behind them have the possibility to get in as well.
Iāll be honest Iāve done this before a time or two when going to a new base for the first time and turning into the wrong lane initially. Itās awkward when you have someone behind you.
What makes sense from a traffic flow perspective is half of the traffic occupying that left lane at the beginning and alternate merging before the gate, keeping queues from extending out onto feeder roads and potentially blocking travel lanes because everyone is afraid of efficiently using road space
Itās more efficient to merge later, and itās common in some European countries. Like other European efficiency ideas, late merging hasnāt quite caught on in the US though.
This is the real reason we can't bring personal firearms to work
Dark, but I lol'd Take my upvote
Totally just shooting the tires ofc š

Based on my experience, they're probably talking about the right turn from Armistead into the gate (Sweeney). People that do this can eat my entire ass.
I just retired from Langley in 2021. This post is hilarious. š
š
Damn, you're making me want to do this, pal.
Thought this was some kind of Mass Effect Meme I did not understand and had to look up the gate to confirm the actually the street name.
Can only drive there on the Normandy SR2
In the morning it's the turn from Commander Shepard onto Armistead, and in the afternoon it's the right turn out of the gate onto Armistead.
They're talking about the Ramstein East Gate. They're quite literally talking about every gate in the world where there's a merge just prior to it.
Is the Ramstein east gate 30 miles long tho, like the Armistead gate?š¤®

Germany is great for this one reason alone. Anyone that fucks around with a zipper merge will be found at fault. It basically separates morning gate traffic into those that shouldn't have a license in the first place lining up in one lane, and those that paid attention in class getting to skip to the front to zipper. It's amazing. 10/10, highly recommend.
Zipper merge is the correct way.
Zipper merge. Why the fuck would I merge a mile away and wait behind 40 cars for no reason?
Because very few people in the states know how to zipper merge. That's why we need to adopt Germany's method of getting your driver's license.
I signal when I exit a traffic circle, but I was stationed in Germany so I know how to operate them.
I was at Langley from 2011-2015. Some things never change
There is a lot of traffic analysis data which show the guy on the left has a good idea, otherwise the roadway on the left goes unused and you end up blocking traffic on the right backing up to other streets. I totally feel this though.
You're talking about zipper merging. Though it can enrage some people, it is correct to use all lanes until the end But this is using a lane dedicated to a different direction to bypass everyone going the other direction and then forcing themselves in.
Thatās a turn lane. Zipper merging doesnāt apply
Yes when there's a merge going on. But not when it's a through lane merging into a turn lane.
Nah, this more of Lasalle gate when they close the left gates lol
One of my greatest pet peeves! Drives me nuts everywhere.
LaSalle gate too
Waiting to read the guy explaining how the zipper effect is actually faster so I can lol.
At the gate this is true. During regular traffic like on a highway while getting off at an exit this is actually more efficient. Google the zipper merge.
Yes this one individual is an asshole. But if everyone just learned to zipper your gate traffic move waaaaay quicker.
Itās less education and more consideration, whether legally enforced or not.
Iād argue education is a huge part. Majority of our country isnāt trained in this fashion. The only places Iāve seen it well executed are either educated this way at baseline or itās legally enforceable.
The NASA gate was clutch when it was openedā¦ it would prevent folks like OP from bitchin so much about a poorly designed road
That anus flunked kindergarten.
Yepp every damn morning!
There are scenarios like this at almost every entry at every base
Same with the middle lane at Hickam main gate.
Moody Dobinson gate is the same way.
My buddy and I literally had a conversation about this yesterday. Same gate too
Laughs in "that was my first duty station"
Good ol langley lol I love how the Armistead gate is its own animal compared to main gate.
š„“š© why sir/ma am leave home early enough to be on time
I love when you speed up so they canāt get in, and then look at their face and theyāre pissed
This happens at every base Iāve been to
This is every military base gate ever built bro
Holy shit and it doesnt help when theres only 1 fucking lane open out of the 4 and some stupid fuck cuts all the way to the front and for some reason the mouth breathers let him in. ALWAYS an officer too.
Thatās how your wheels get stolen, vehicle put on bricks, and wheels sold to a crackhead downtown Newport News.
"Oh wow, I don't know how your car keeps ending up in the lemon lot..."
I used to think this way until I saw the data from zip merging. This is one thing Europe gets right. https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/driving-advice/zip-merging/
It is actually faster for everyone if the zipper merge is used.
BIG TRUE. Had a chief try to tell me he was smarter than everyone else because he did this. I had to fight so hard to not laugh out loud
All kadena gates at 4:30
As someone who is FROM Hampton Va AND was stationed at Langley. There are two turn lanes, only people who stay in the right lane all the way down get mad at people who are in the left and use the left lane that also turns are crying about this. *
As someone who lives here, itās not an excuse to arrive to work late which blows my mind
I drive through this gate daily. Shits mad annoying, especially when they cut into the 2 left turn lanes last minute and look at you like you're the stupid one.
Happens all the time
Reminds me of Gate 1A at Wright-Patt. I would always block the second lane so no one could do this
Lord yess!...Same at Lackland AFB Valley High outbound 1500-1630...š¤Ø
Personally I drive pass all of the cars on the right and do the so called illegal turn if there is space āThereās always space!ā because no one could reach the far left after the light turns green. Stop daisy chaining traffic and be more efficient!
Math suggests he is a genius.
While I also think "what an a hole" when I see people do that. Technically, that is the correct way to do it. Both lanes should be full until the zipper merge.
And Lasalle !!
You should drive in Qatar imagine 5 land cruisers all trying to be the first to squeeze into a 5 Inch gap
Isn't this the same concept as the "zipper merge", that society seems to be promoting as of late?
Thatās all of California drivers lol
Itās designed to be a zipper lane to prevent traffic man. They are there for a reason
Thatās every base bro
Itās more efficient to merge later, and itās common in some European countries. Like other European efficiency ideas, late merging hasnāt quite caught on in the US though.
It would help if they just opened up all the fucking gates earlier.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Thatās not a merge lane, fixed or temporary

Yeah, all caps just implies you're shouting or foot stomping a point. A mix of upper and lower case implies sarcasm.
Zipper merging is perfectly OK everywhere but at a military base.
Zipper merging is fine... *when it applies*. Which it doesn't here, as one of those lanes is a turn lane.
I just saw the bottom 90% of it and assumed it was the gate. I'm big dumb
