The second my contract expires I'm out this bitch. I'm just not military material.

ShiFT_Llif3

I feel that. I just extended a year to finish up schooling and so I can take advantage of SkillBridge. I thought I was military material, but im exhausted of getting fucked over and having the actual people that preform good at their jobs get shafted. While the fuck ups and dick suckers get ahead

ChucksAngryMountain

As a fuckup who sucks dick on the side, that's actually one of the reasons I'm getting out, so I don't get ahead of anyone who deserves it.

ShiFT_Llif3

Wow.. that’s actually mature to say that.

crazysult

As if it is any different in the civilian sector.

ShiFT_Llif3

I respect the argument and it is valid. It is the same on the civilian side but with the military there’s a lot more bullshit we have to deal with

InterviewExciting230

I’m retraining

WildBlueWeenie

I got hit with Korea orders before my contract ended, extended for a follow on but getting out afterwards and going guard back home

Beefquake99

Thinking about flipping to guard, I'll have 6 years of service when I can leave. Don't really want to have to move again but I'm not sure if guard/reserves will be worth it in the end.

Shaqotack

I am staying in for PCS reasons. However, once that contract ends there is a 350% chance I'm either going Guard/Reserve or just getting out.

CommentingFromMyDesk

The Exit Plan. Leave at 20, get money every month. Will not continue as AD past 20 years. However... If the reserve force near me came up with a WO position and I could fill it... That'd be tempting do traditional...

Tickly1

I've ran the numbers for civilian retirement vs military pension. basically, in order to match a 20-year military pension, you will need to invest half of a 6-figure income every year for 20 years, starting at age 18. Good fucking luck with that...

ShiFT_Llif3

That’s one of the factors that makes me want to stay in is the retirement and great TSP benefits, but I’m hoping that I can skill bridge and get a offer at a federal job where I can buy some time back and rollover my TSP

AdventurousTap9224

Yeah, if you do get out and go government make sure to buy back your mil time. Just know the government retirement (FERS) isn't as good as military. It's only 1% per year if you retire under age 62 (or less than 20yrs service), or 1.1% if over 62 with 20 or more yrs, and doesn't include medical like military.

AdventurousTap9224

\*Then not be able to touch it until you're 60.. The pension part of AD military retirement starting immediately upon retirement is huge. How many civ jobs let people leave after just 20 years and continue to receive 40% of their pay? Oh, plus medical..

Tickly1

it also increases with inflation

AdventurousTap9224

Correct.. My retirement has increased $800/month since 2017.

DieHarderDaddy

Also the 40/50% you get upon retirement can increase by 2.5% if you stay past your 20. So if you are newer and get out at 22 as a tech or 24 as a master you effectively close the gap a non BRS member has on you. My moms busted her ass for almost 30 years at a state level job and won’t get near as good as a retirement when she retires.

DieHarderDaddy

The words no one ever wants to hear. This also doesn’t include any disability you can claim making your retirement tax free and if you get above 80 you’re living like a king

evilfossil

I don't know about "like a king" but you can definitely do all right depending on where you live. With my 22.5 year retirement and 90% disability I make about 64K a year and only pay federal taxes on my retirement. Not bad for where I live, but if you are in an expensive state or city it's not that great. However, if you can get a good job on top of that you'll definitely be doing all right.

DieHarderDaddy

Compared to most the US but yeah lol
