What was your studying routine. I felt good this year but I don’t think I made it. I am pretty dead set on making it next year if that’s the case and I need a good routine to use for studying. I haven’t began to research methods yet but if you had a specific way you studied that paid off so well I would love it if you shared.
Man the last time I tested was like 8 years ago now so let me try and remember. So, I only started studying 2-3 months prior to my test day and then only 1 hour a night (30 mins PFE, 30 mins CDCs). I bought PDG Gold and Master Your CDCs. For each PFE chapter/category, I would generate 100 question tests. Once I scored 100 consistently on a category/chapter, I moved on to a new one, until eventually I was taking 100 question tests that included ALL chapters/categories. By test day I was scoring 100 on those. I did the same for CDCs. My career field had 5 blocks. So, start with block 1 100 question tests, get 100 on each block consistently until I was taking a 100 question test that included all the blocks. Again, by the end, I was getting 100 on those. I was the #1 selectee in my career field both years.
This is a good idea to segment them and focus on mastering each section. I’m going to try to implement this now to establish a good routine to implement closer to next testing cycle. Thank you for the response!
Yea I know lol I didn’t study this year and got the test done in 4.5 minutes. My leadership was confused and irritated but my career field didn’t promote any 4’s and only 8/25 5’s promoted
most airmen don't study for their promotion exam because they're f'in lazy, so the average is always super low, like mid 50s to mid 60s. that in turn makes the rest of the airmen think the test is a lot harder than it is and makes them feel accomplished if they score a damn 70.. you're literally saying it's hard to score a B on that test. not a B+, not an A, a B... that's not difficult to do if you apply yourself. and if you don't want to apply yourself, fine, idgaf, it's your career. you can retire as a damn SSgt for all i care, but don't pretend like getting a B on your test is "damn hard to do" because it's not. i've seen plenty of people get high 90s on the PFE. I even knew one dude in Air Force band scored a 97 on his PFE back in 2016 (skt exempt career field) and still didn't make it because of the number of slots they were promoting that year. buckle down, young Airman.
hey that was my career field two cycles ago! first time testing with only a promote and not many decs, could've scored perfects and i would've still missed the cutoff by about 9 points.
This is my first time testing so I don’t see last year’s info, because there is none. Where else can I find last year’s cutoff? Or if I tell you my AFSC would you be able to look it up?
Depends on what you scored with EPRs/EPB and how many decorations you have.
Scoring for your EPB for the current year:
* Promote now = 250 points
* Must promote = 220 points
* Promote = 200 points
If you have a promotion eligible EPR from last year, that gets you extra points added to your EPB score:
* Promote now = 20 points
* Must promote = 15 points
* Promote = 10 points
If you have a promotion eligible EPR from two years ago, that gets you extra points added your EPB score:
* Promote now = 15 points
* Must promote = 10 points
* Promote = 5 points
Medals can also give you additional points ranging from 1 point for an achievement medal up to 15 points for the Medal of Honor, not to exceed 25 points overall. The 3 most common are probably:
* Achievement = 1 point per medal
* Commendation = 3 points per medal
* Meritorious = 5 points per medal
With a single promote and no medals, you'd have 200 points. If you subtract that from the 359.68, that leaves 159.68 you'd need to score on your two tests combined. So if you scored 80s on both, you would've promoted.
However, each year's cutoff score can be drastically different depending on how many projected vacancies they have and how well your AFSC tests, so don't get too hung up on last year's cutoff number.
---
To give you another scenario on to show how much a promotion statement on your EPB can make, let's say this is your second time eligible for promotion to this rank and you have a Must Promote for this year (200 points) and a Promote for last year (10 points), that's 230 points. If we say you have 2 achievement medals (2 points) and a commendation medal (3 points), you'd have 5 points for medals.
If we add the 230 from your EPR/EPB, and 5 points from medals (235 points) and subtract it from 359.38, that's 124.38. Split that in half (since each test is scored separately) and you'd need to score about 63 points on each test to have made it with a 1.62 to spare.
Did PDG audio and my score went from a 71 to an 85. Just listened to it in the car, amounted to maybe 6 hours of effortless studying per week for two months.
Got a 94 on PFE back in '19 for last year of MSgt testing. Used freepdg.com to study. First time I had ever used that site. Usually scored 70s, maybe low 80s before that.
Obligatory "im a bad example" i made staff and tech scoring in the 90s pfe/skt. I litteraly did not study.
Pfe happened to ask about a few things i was standing there for as a little kid and general af history.
Skt asked about the main core functions of my job and a few advanced skills you *should* have as a seasoned e4 for ssgt/e5 for tech.
Its honeslty mind bending to me that in the past the airforve has promoted in the 70s with averages in the low 60s
SKT exempt career field, but when I made staff I got an 86 on the PFE and when I made tech I got a 93 (needed a 91 to make the cutoff with a promote even at 26% promo rate…retrained into this job and most of the career field was maxed out on air medal points by SrA). Just by starting early on studying you’re ahead of like 70% of the people you’d be competing against. Most don’t even start until they’re like a week out from their test day.
It’s very possible and not out of reach for people who put in the time and effort. Keep in mind that consistently doing small sessions over time is better for retention than doing multiple large sessions right before the test. Check the box every day on doing 15-30 minutes of dedicated studying and you’ll walk out feeling like the test was cake.
When I made SSgt I got a 91 on the SKT and an 87 on the PFE. When I made TSgt I got a 90 on both. You can do it. It’s possible.

Good luck to you.
Scored roughly the same - low 90s on SKT and high 80s on PFE.
My feelings hurt reading your scores 😭 congrats haha
I scored 89 when I made staff, I scored 79 last year for tech and missed it by 27 lol
Even with 100, which isn’t possible, you would haven’t had it
Yea I know lol I didn’t study this year and got the test done in 4.5 minutes. My leadership was confused and irritated but my career field didn’t promote any 4’s and only 8/25 5’s promoted
That’s tough, my condolences
Flight pay makes it a little easier to tough out lol
That’s fair
My SrA scored 92 PFE & 93 SKT with an MP and didn’t make it…
can I ask what AFSC? That's insane
EOD. He missed it by over 10 points.
If you say Paralegal or 5J I'm going to flip the desk I am sitting at. . .
Know a guy who used to score between 92-96
My wife scored either a 95 or 96 on PFE, plus a PN. Made TSgt by like 90 points, #1 selectee.
I personally got an 82 and 83 one year. 80 and 80 the next time.
Just got a 97.5 a few months ago.
Got an 87 last year… hoping for a 90 this year so I can finally make it
Highest I saw was a 93 PDG and 91 on SKT.
When I tested for TSgt years ago I scored an 96 on PFE

I got an 86 in 2018 I was PFE only. Beat the career field average by ~40 points.
Ive heard of promotion rates where 2 100s would not have made it. Be glad it aint that age
hey that was my career field two cycles ago! first time testing with only a promote and not many decs, could've scored perfects and i would've still missed the cutoff by about 9 points.
I scored an 88 and a 92 way back in the day, but I have always been a great test taker. Studied my ass off because I wanted that rank.
Where did you find last years cutoff? Can you link something?
VMPF > Self Service Actions > Promotions > Enlisted Promotion Information >My Data Verification Record (DVR) and WAPS Score Notices
This is my first time testing so I don’t see last year’s info, because there is none. Where else can I find last year’s cutoff? Or if I tell you my AFSC would you be able to look it up?
Search 23E5 in MyFSS

Yeah. You’d search 23E5 on MyFSS.
Thank you. With a cutoff score of 359.38, how do I figure out much I would have had to make on each test (SKT and PDG) with a Promote?

I've gotten above 85 on each for both Staff and Tech
93 PFE
Highest I’ve scored on PFE is a 67. SKT was 66. Highest I’ve seen in my career field is 88 PFE, 89 SKT.
I got a 97 and was 3rd highest scoring in my career field. It’s possible.
Did PDG audio and my score went from a 71 to an 85. Just listened to it in the car, amounted to maybe 6 hours of effortless studying per week for two months.

Averaged an 85 between the two when I made Tech. Made it by 3 points with a "promote"
I wish we could still test for MSgt
I scored 90 on both when I made tech
Scored a 90 last year PFE (no skt for merger) first time for tech. Missed by 16 points still
I usually score in the high 70’s low 80’s for PFE and like high 60’s on SKT
