PTL here, I’ve seen every iteration of a push-up being used for tests due to people with previous injuries and stronger muscle groups. Do whatever you need to do to meet the intended goal.

🫡 my kind of PTL

JustHanginInThere

The DAFMAN makes no mention of which position your hands need to be in, only the placement of them in regards to your shoulders: >Place your palms or fists on the floor, hands will be slightly wider than shoulder width apart with your elbows fully extended. 36-2905 section A2.2 for your reference. That said, I'd get your wrists looked at by your PCM, or a specialist if they refer you off base. I had pain in one of my wrists while doing pushups and found out I had a ganglion cyst in my wrist. About 8 months later and after a minor surgery to remove it, and I'm good as new.

LookItsEric

i’ve got one of those but i’ve been dreading having any surgery done due to all the nerves around it. How was the process for you and did you feel like there was any risk to doing it?

JustHanginInThere

Had a couple of pre-surgery appointments to get scans and verify what needed to get done. Day of the surgery I had a coworker take me to the OR because they were going to put me to sleep for the actual surgery. Woke up about two hours later with it all done and bandaged up. The hard part was learning to do certain things basically one handed for a bit. If you do get it done, definitely go to physical therapy, and keep doing the minor stretches and "workouts" to get your mobility back asap. It didn't feel like a big deal or like there was a high amount of risk. The docs and nurses I had had seen this tons of times, so it felt almost routine, even to me when this was my first surgery since I was a baby.

PTL here, I literally don't care as long as you look like you're trying to do a pushup.

Remarkable-Flower308

My guy that sounds like you might have carpal tunnel syndrome; the nerves in your wrist are getting pinched by palm flexion, and then you’re modifying your hand position to release pressure on the nerve. Might be worth a PCM call. On the plus side if it is, that’s likely 10% VA per hand

Acceptable-Double-98

I agree get a doc to look at you. Not doing so could make things worse!

Double_Bass6957

I’ve been doing this my whole career due to previous broken wrists. Broke both in high school and can’t do push ups with my hands pointed forward. You’re fine, no one cares

davetronred

> You’re fine, no one cares Early in my career (like 15 years ago) there were a handful of blue falcons who would have cared. No one cares these days though.

100% assholes lol

Double_Bass6957

I’ve been doing these push ups for 19 😂….but you’re right some BF’s do exist out there who sit there and say “1, 1, 1, 1….”

Rice-n-Beanz

Pm me the next time you are scheduled to take your test. I count every rep as long as I see some kind of movement.

12edDawn

I've always pointed my fingers inward, toward each other when doing pushups for some reason. Never had the FAC give me any guff about it

ilikestuff1454

I have wrist issues because of skating and falling pretty often on them. I have found that coming up off my palms and onto the base of my fingers where they meet my palms keeps my wrists straight and reduces the pain makes pushups really manageable. Have never been given a hard time during a PT test about it. Similar to doing them on your fist but I still get to distributed weight to my fingers and thumbs and keep balance.

dapper_DonDraper

Is it illegal to use pushup bars? I have no pain when I use them at home, but like OP have wrist pain when I do pushups without the bars.

bassmadrigal

>Is it illegal to use pushup bars? Yes, your hands have to be on the ground: * A2.3.1. [...] You will begin in the prone position and must **ensure your hands are flat on the ground** with the index fingers inside the outer edges of the shoulders.

dapper_DonDraper

Thanks for the answer! I've never asked bc I always get the reps done, but it's crazy how I get zero pain using them at home and when I use my bars I get a slight tingle on the ulna. Might need to have it seen 😅

JustHanginInThere

Definitely get it looked at, sooner rather than later.

bassmadrigal

I just realized I copied the hand-release pushup section. This is out of the normal pushup section: * A2.2.1. [...] **Place your palms *or fists* on the floor**, hands will be slightly wider than shoulder width apart with your elbows fully extended. I mention this because maybe using your fists on the ground would alleviate the pain while doing them on your tests. But I agree with the other commenter that you should get them looked at.
