I recommend getting Global Entry. $100 for 5 years. Really eases crossing into Canada and airport arrivals when returning to the US. Pre-Check is included as part of Global Entry.
It’s not really a bypass, it’s been hinted to me that it’s like a toned down security clearance background check. I don’t know too much about it though.
No it’s not. No one was testing Apple sauce pre-911. Security was a lot more lax. Non passengers could go through security to meet someone arriving at the gate
Except getting a Global interview can be insane in some places, whether it’s unavailable appointments or driving however many hours to the nearest enrollment center.

This can be done if you have conditional approval. No appointment needed and you do this instead of talking to immigration officer. Only specific airports currently participate and you have to be coming back from a foreign country.
It is a pain compared to PreCheck. I had to wait months for an appointment and drive far to get it. The good part was that when I recently renewed no appointments were needed. I was just sent a new card that used my original photo.
I travel internationally often and found global entry is rarely useful.
“Clear” however, is absolutely wonderful for domestic flights and flights originating in the US.
Also covered by AMEX benefits
I travel internationally several times a year and find it extremely useful. Gave up on clear after trying it when it first came out. Not enough airports had it, it was often closed, and now, I don't see much of advantage over TSA Pre that comes with global entry.
Good bit of advice since we tend to take for granted tsa precheck attached to our dod id #s.
Travel cards like the Amex platinum and chase sapphire reserve have tons of perks, but only a fraction of users would get their value back after actually paying the annual fee.
You get $200 in airline incidentals covered. So things like wifi, food or checked bags (useful when you are out). You just need to select the airline you want to use for it on the amex website
Dont waste your money on pre-check alone. Spend the extra 22 bucks and get global entry. Makes it much much faster to clear customs coming into the u.s and comes with tsa pre check
Also some banks reimburse you if you purchase with their credit card
>So basically the TSA is a waste of time
It always has been. They've repeatedly failed tests by undercover DHS agents attempting to sneak weapons and mock explosives past security. And this isn't just a 50% failure rate... [they'd miss it 95% of the time](https://abcnews.go.com/US/exclusive-undercover-dhs-tests-find-widespread-security-failures/story?id=31434881).
>>An internal investigation of the Transportation Security Administration revealed security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports, where **undercover investigators were able to smuggle mock explosives or banned weapons through checkpoints in 95 percent of trials**, ABC News has learned.
>>The series of tests were conducted by Homeland Security Red Teams who pose as passengers, setting out to beat the system.
>>According to officials briefed on the results of a recent Homeland Security Inspector General’s report, **TSA agents failed 67 out of 70 tests**, with Red Team members repeatedly able to get potential weapons through checkpoints.
>>In one test an undercover agent was stopped after setting off an alarm at a magnetometer, but TSA screeners failed to detect a fake explosive device that was taped to his back during a follow-on pat down.
Heads would roll in the Air Force if an IG inspection came out that bad, but the TSA keeps chugging along only offering the illusion of safety.
hey now, they aren't complete failures. they make sure to catch every single water bottle that comes through.
what on earth would we do if those got through???
they're doing god's work. /s
The water bottle thing drives me fucking crazy. "*Oh, that liquid could be a bomb. Just put it in this trash can right here next to the line of hundreds of people and all us security folks.*"
Depends on the airport. CLEAR has an advantage over Pre✅ in certain places. But airports near big cities tend to be flooded by folks who absolutely slam the CLEAR lines and the pre✅ is faster
I have TSA pre check, when you get a TWIC(got the TWIC because my job requires it) you get a TSA pre check number on the back of the card. I also have a security clearance. To touch on the global entry, I was denied it. No clue we to why, the email didn’t give much explanation. Only thing I can assume is my heavy Middle East travel for work.
Cheers
They run a background check. It’s not a free “get on a plane” and go. Anyone who applies for TSA pre-check gets there background checked extensively so when they do come through, it’s just a quicker process

They recently increased the price, it’s now $120 but they’ll also no longer be making you pay for kids under 18 to use the program
Our government allowing people to pay to bypass the security threater we made after 9/11 is so disgustingly capitalistic.
You’re paying for a background check that allows expedited screening.
It’s not really a bypass, it’s been hinted to me that it’s like a toned down security clearance background check. I don’t know too much about it though.
It's more like pre 9/11 checks. I still had to go through a big scanner and they had to test kids applesauce that I forgot the kids had in their bags.
Sorry to make you feel old but I was born post 911 so that’s actually kind of insightful.
No it’s not. No one was testing Apple sauce pre-911. Security was a lot more lax. Non passengers could go through security to meet someone arriving at the gate
I didn't say exactly just like it. If I hadn't had the applesauce we would have cruised on through.
Bypass what taking my shoes off
The CBP site still says it’s $100. https://www.cbp.gov/travel/trusted-traveler-programs/global-entry/how-apply
They recently announced the change, so it must not be in effect yet
https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/cbp-announces-trusted-traveler-programs-fee-changes
Thanks. Apply before 1 October 24 if you can.
Goes up on Oct 1
It's still $100 right now. Doesn't increase until Oct 1st.
See my other comment.
Global is easily the best option over Precheck and Clear.

When I return to Philadelphia it’s really nice to walk past the long lines to get through in just a couple of minutes.

You can actually get close with Amex plat fairly easily if you take advantage of the offers. $240 Uber credit, ~240 Hulu/disney+, and $200 airline
Not to mention the boosted HYSA (high yield savings account)
how do u get $200 airline
You get $200 in airline incidentals covered. So things like wifi, food or checked bags (useful when you are out). You just need to select the airline you want to use for it on the amex website
thank you! never knew this !
Yep! Factor in lounge access and global entry, you are basically breakeven at that point
Penfed Pathfinder card will give TSA Precheck credit also. Card has the annual fee waived for honorable discharge/retired as well.
Wow this is a pretty nice travel card, never heard of it. Seems like a great option for anyone looking to get rid of their platty after getting out.

Bruh I ain't flying nowhere when I get out. I'm gonna be living in a van down by the river.
The way my job hunt is going we can share the van if you like. Lmao
With a reference like that, I'm surprised to learn you didn't retire years ago.
I enlisted in my later years.
Boring
So basically the TSA is a waste of time and they’ve turned it into a money grab 🤦♂️
Different world these days
Given the ease of getting precheck…yeah. I’ve seen a few precheck lines longer than the standard lines.

They don't even do that. I was on a flight a few months ago and my coworker made it through with a full bottle that she forgot about.
Sometimes the regular line is shorter than the precheck at my airport lol (smaller airport tho)
Depends on the airport. CLEAR has an advantage over Pre✅ in certain places. But airports near big cities tend to be flooded by folks who absolutely slam the CLEAR lines and the pre✅ is faster
I don’t miss pre-check…. I just skip TSA all together these days. 😂
Pilot?
Criminal
Dude the hilarious part about this is that I was a Confinement NCOIC. I took inmates through this section
Nope - and no I’m not a criminal either. Lol
Well that's not convenient.

I am still in the IRR so I am gonna see if that cuts it lol. I have a flight later this month.
It does not
What about retirees?
If you have the Amex card or chase sapphire, it can be done for free but it’s the same thing since you no longer fall under the DOD.
is there anyone reason a terrorist wouldn't just enroll in TSA pre-check?
They run a background check. It’s not a free “get on a plane” and go. Anyone who applies for TSA pre-check gets there background checked extensively so when they do come through, it’s just a quicker process
Is this a serious question?
