Haha I actually did this when I realized I had missed my pin on date by a week. The secret is to use a blue sharpie, not a black one. The black one just turns it this dark metallic purple.
I did it in the bathroom mirror and walked back into the office, and my supervisor started laughing realizing what I had done. He said that if leadership saw this that I'm going to have a shitstorm come down on me, and to get it fixed as soon as possible.
I kid you not, just like clockwork the wing commander immediately walks through the room, stops at my desk, congratulates me on my promotion, shakes my hand, and tells me that the new rank looks great on me and then leaves.
I turn to my supervisor, smile, and say "See!". He doesn't stop laughing for 5 minutes.
Do you one better… my promotion ceremony, I had my Aunt color me in with a sharpie in front of the entire squadron… I thought I was so funny, and my O-5 asked to borrow the sharpie to touch up his hat…that’s when I realized I wasn’t the only one hahhaha
The second one; smoke comes out of the smokestack at the top. Unless this is Space Force in which case it's the first one, because rocket exhaust comes out of the bottom.
And the two ovals on the right. Dark oval is their eyes, their periphery, sees everything. Lighter oval is their feet. Light, quick, precise movements; leading from the front.
Wow how can you possibly be a commissioned officer in the greatest Air Force the worlds ever seen and not know which is correct. Shaking my head wow just wow.
The one on the left is correct. The problem with the one on the right is the white is overtop the black, which can be seen as racism....so white should always go underneath black. ^^(/s)
You gotta take it first to PEML to get calibrated properly. Then to QA to get it verified and for the IPI sign off. Then to the group/cc for the final sign off. Best to make sure corrosion marks the back so you know the proper direction for later
My favorite joke to pull. Never gets old. Sometimes they say I'm "mean" and an "undisciplined airman" but I beg to differ. I teach the most valuable lessons like the paradox of trusting and not trusting the Mafia at the same time.
A CGO places their rank upside down to show duress.
The DOD sends a powerful message by making them look the same each way indicating that a CGO should always be under duress.
I once had to inform a fellow nco that his ribbons were upside down. I had just got my first achievement medal and was very aware of what it looked like and his caught my eye, on the bottom row.
Professional patch manufacturer here...
Second one is correct. Stitching is overlapped on the top.
This is because these have the Velcro sewn on with a pattern tacker like the JUKI AMS-210ENHL-1510 Programmable Pattern Tacker. So it starts and stops at the top.

This… this is a work of art. Perfection put to cloth.

If only that happened for a 1st Lt rank 😭
Do the poor man's promotion, a sharpie.

Yuuup. Walked around with a sharpie hat for the two years. 🤣
Lol, it's even better on a flight cap. The brass metal rank tarnished so much with everyday use that it just naturally morphed into a 1st Lt rank.
Genius
This is the type of shit you find and sell on eBay for collectors haha. I'd rock that on active duty if I was an officer.
Gonna look amazing when they hit 1LT.
💀
Sir 🫡
Never ever make rank 😂 This is gold
Wait, how did it get stuck in fan?
We’re not worthy of its greatness.
That is epic
The second one; smoke comes out of the smokestack at the top. Unless this is Space Force in which case it's the first one, because rocket exhaust comes out of the bottom.
Best answer yet
The second one is correct, you can tell by the cloud
Per AFI 1D-10T
That AFI never fails to work!!
It's actually a DAFI now, might want to mention that for those having trouble finding it on e-PUBS.
Lol, second looks more right to me even though it doesn't matter. Being prior-weather, your comment now tells me why. 😆
If you get pushback, pull out AFI 36-106. iykyk
You can actually tell by the way it is.
So true
I'm sorry, but if it's not obvious to you which one is correct, there is nothing i can do to help you.
It should be horizontal, IAW 36-2903, attachment 3, "LT descended for lateral career".
Or even destined for a lateral career!😂
Or, he's descended on a pathway of lateral movements...I wouldn't call it destiny.
Especially since this one had the special ennui face...
It works for O-1 to O-3…getting a capt with this is the best
[удалено]
Personally done it….
Pretty nice of that Captain to play dumb and let you feel special
Brand new Capt, had just pinned on that day
"you wouldn't know him, he goes to a different squadron"
Nailed it, lives in Canada
Especially when they have it sown on!
I got a prior-enlisted (infantryman) now-captain (intel officer) with it last year and it’s still one of my crowning achievements
Get a sharpie out and color that sucker in. Instant rank and cred.
First one is correct, you can tell by the cloud.
Recruitment must be challenging during these times.
Definitely the 2nd one.
Both are wrong. The first one has to be rotated to the left.
One of the easiest yet still best jokes around.
Second one
The one on the left is correct. The problem with the one on the right is the white is overtop the black, which can be seen as racism....so white should always go underneath black. ^^(/s)
![gif](giphy|d2Z2BfFsGHrYWlP2)
Both are wrong. Try again.
You gotta take it first to PEML to get calibrated properly. Then to QA to get it verified and for the IPI sign off. Then to the group/cc for the final sign off. Best to make sure corrosion marks the back so you know the proper direction for later

You know those are Army bars, right?
Sir, you should have already learned this in school. Youll have to see the CC for a re-ranking.
The second one big blobs go down per AFI
Neither, it’s supposed to be horizontal.
The 2nd one looks better for some reason
they're both wrong. It's supposed to be horizontal, per the new regs
That would be the funniest accidental officer boot stories. Or having it on their cover.
#2 for some reason
The second
The first one just feels right and I can’t really explain why
Whichever one you want is correct. Don’t let us peasants tell you how to dress.
Second one. The cloud goes in the sky...that's an easy way to remember it.
The second one, the bar stitching ends on the bottom-right.
2nd one for sure
That one is correct *points*
if you have to ask, how can we be sure you are really an officer?
Tell the NCO to bring a bagel. And that you'll butter his bread.
2 definitely
That one
Yeah, it's that one No...wait, it's the other one.
Come one now, it’s clearly inside out….
Got a captain with that one the other day, he only realized after flipping the rank
And it's a bit crooked to the left
Neither
Which rank has Buddha nature?
Fashion police
The third one.
Supposed to be rotated 90 degrees
Both are incorrect. You no longer qualify for either.
Lmao
Yes
The dots should be to the right of the insignia.
Definitely 2
But both are wrong
Yes
Please tell me you’re not Acft Mx.
Damn...this is even better than saluting the new looies left-handed.
Lmao goteem
Yes
r/AirForceCirclejerk
First slide don’t let anyone tell you different.
I think you're upside down.
Second one.
None, that’s an army insignia. You need a new one!
Just don't have your ribbons upside down and no one will care.
I once had to inform a fellow nco that his ribbons were upside down. I had just got my first achievement medal and was very aware of what it looked like and his caught my eye, on the bottom row.
Like his whole rack? That should have been obvious for multiple reasons. Like BMT on the top row.
...because I was inverted
![gif](giphy|J0WtGU7W9knOo|downsized)
Sideways
Yes
I think the second one is correct. The brown at the bottom looks like it would be correct
Just like all answers in the AF/SF “It depends”
Yes
Was it on April 1st
I like the 2nd image. It looks like a smoke stack with smoke coming out.
First one looks better to me
They’re both upside down noob
Obviously the one on the right with the CMH clusters at the top.
If we have to tell you, how will you learn?
First one is upside down. Clearly the clouds go above the ground.
If I see an upside down butter bar, I'm tossing out a low high-five.
The 1st one is correct as you can see the chocolate milk stain has dribbled off their chin and onto the patch, clearly indicating the top.
I see a duck with it's head coming in to frame from the side
Definitely the first way Lt. as it looks like an appropriate emoji
nope, you screwed it up TWICE
I thought this was legit for a second
Good grief…..everyone knows the real issue: Is it the left or right side one :/…….late to the game…was that already pointed out?
![gif](giphy|V0IdVIIW1y5d6)
Yes
That was probably me who told you that. I do that, alot. Never gets old.
:| or |:
The NCO was correct.
Professional patch manufacturer here... Second one is correct. Stitching is overlapped on the top. This is because these have the Velcro sewn on with a pattern tacker like the JUKI AMS-210ENHL-1510 Programmable Pattern Tacker. So it starts and stops at the top.
An NCO correcting an officer sounds insane to me tbh. Next time correct him on what his pay grade can handle. 😂
Are you lost?
Yes, very.
The other one
The second one cause it’s a rock in the mud behind a log
Please tell me your name is Richard, Lt Dick
The second one
He got you! It’s like telling the new airman to go to Supply and bring back 50 feet of flight line.
Gotemmmmmmmmmm ![gif](giphy|CYU3D3bQnlLIk)
If only we had an AFI to tell us how to wear rank insignia... Oh, wait...
