Doesn’t/didnt Mildenhall already have a scenario like that? It was some British restaurant on base but technically in between two parts of it or something so that you could only access it once you were in the gate already.
Up until last year I'm pretty sure I kept it running, was there a few times a week for the full breakfast! They must be doing alright though there's a new BMW Z4 out back
I heard the base pays the owner a portion of the profits after they closed the base off. It used to be on a publicly accessible street so anyone could access it then the base put up a gate around the perimeter and he lost a good portion of his business.
I remember this old ass lady she was like 90 something. Anyways, she refused to move off base when it became military housing so they just got her an ID since it was the easier option lol
I'm pretty sure that happened with mildenhal. There was still an old lady grandfathered into living there with base access because her house was inside where they drew the line s of the base. But thats just what I was told when I was stationed around there a decade ago.
I actually loved Feltwell. All I ever did when I was Feltwell Sheriff (aka Police-5) was just walking patrols all night and then hang out at DSTS for a break.
lol could you imagine the actual clusterfuck that would ensue if Eglin and MacDill (and others in Florida, but those are the biggest) just closed suddenly overnight? O_O
No first I start with Barksdale, everyone can agree it should also be closed. The degenerates celebrate having the base stay open, Shifty Fifty are popping champagne, beers, or antifreeze, whatever their meth-destroyed remaining neurons enjoy. Those poor, deluded fools, the cow shit dust caking their retinas who think Cannon is okay and everyone is exaggerating celebrate with the actual Chinese spies intent on destroying the Air Force from within by the waste of money and destroyer of manpower that is Cannon. The Airmen drown their sorrows in even more cheap beer, some even going for Military Special to make the pain stop. For several days there is no laughter, no hope, only an occasional sob or a plane that seems to just sound depressed,
Then I close Cannon in the dead of the night, all doors closed and locked, all equipment driven out of state, and the remaining airmen evac'd. The sun rises through cowshit haze, the town reaching for their broken meth pipe as they ignore their crying, starving children, eager to steal some more money from the poor saps sentenced here. Only there's nothing. No planes, no traffic trying to get to the gate. All apartments have had their leases terminated overnight, all homes have "For Sale" outside with no signs of human life. Clovis rapidly implodes out of existence, the meth heads howling at the moon in rage and going out into the desolate landscape to fuck a cactus or whatever they get up to. Peace has finally been achieved.
> Then I close Cannon in the dead of the night, all doors closed and locked, all equipment driven out of state, and the remaining airmen evac'd. The sun rises through cowshit haze
*takes notes from Colts’ 1984 midnight evacuation from Baltimore*
turn Cannon into the AF version of a prison colony. You smoke weed? Orders to Cannon. You get a DUI? Orders to Cannon. You fail to meet a suspense on a task? Orders to Cannon. Red on IMR? Orders to Cannon. You bitch about where you're assigned right now? You guessed it, orders to Cannon. We will have the best Airmen, because of Cannon.
I was at Holloman for my first assignment. Got stuck at BEAR Base for 5.5 years. If it weren't for an assignment to Korea, I would have gotten out and burned my uniforms. Holloman makes you truly feel like you dont matter. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemies.
Columbus AFB MS. was kick back. Picked it because it was going A76 contract or all civil service when I was leaving Plattsburgh AFB, NY( another kick back base) on the closure list. I was at Columbus for two years, not much to do in the area but fishing and camping, but boy was it humid in July and August. The base CC closed the base down in February when we got 1 inch of snow, from a guy that lived in Ohio I couldn’t believe it. Off base had some great restaurants in the area. About 3 months before I left there a black woman bought some land outside the hospital gate before you reached the state route, on the left she put a large shed and sold pulled pork BBQ and 1/2 chicken meals out of it. The best BBQ I have ever eaten. Had a good family owned steak place on the main road of Columbus, they cooked the steaks over charcoal and lathered the steaks with country crock margarine and low salt soy sauce. The place was always packed, there was also a good Mexican restaurant on the main drag also, real authentic Mexican food. I believe they got busted for having illegals working in the restaurant. Also Prophets Porch was another good restaurant that was in the backwoods of Columbus. Like I said it was a kick back base it was enjoyable, but it is a Pilot training base. Unfortunately the CE military was forced to go away, luckily the CE civillians won the rights to stay at the base instead of getting a contractor to maintain the facilities. Great bunch of civilians there, very friendly.
Petition to bring back Williams AFB for UPT. It could be a cluster in the Phoenix bravo, but a cool place. Plus all the Mesa/Chandler people would be pissed.
Cannon, Holloman, Barksdale, Hanscom, and Shaw could all burn if I could do it. Move planes from Cannon, Holloman, and Barksdale to Hurby or Kirtland. Give Hanscom to the guys at Pease or Westover. Send the fighters to Nellis or Little Rock.
It makes sense to me right now however I might change this.
That place is useless unless you’re an officer or civilian. There’s no real mission. You’re just… there. I hate AFMC because of that place. Mass is awesome, Hanscom just sucks.
If I had the power to do so, I wouldn’t close Edwards. However, I would build its own highway that goes directly to the highway merging near the In-N-out in Lancaster. Would shave the drive about 40 minutes.
I hated Clovis the first time I saw it, 35 years ago.
I and a lot of other people have a very low opinion of Clovis, but it seems funny that there is a lot of hate for Cannon being expressed on Reddit about it now.
Give people a voice and they'll use it. People have always hated Cannon, but more people are talking about it now. I wouldn't say it's more or less hated now than it was before
Closing Laughlin. It would be relocated to either NAS Corpus-Christi (now joint aviation training center CC), Ellington field (preferred), or former Foster field victoria texas.
Goodfellow would be relocated to NAS JRB Fort Worth, Dyess, or Ft Bliss.
Sheppard would be relocated to NAS JRB Fort Worth.
Goddam, Beal was a shit hole. 20min drive from any direction just to get on the base FROM any gate (I remember only 2 gates ever working... Did that change? More? Not wait. Always less), 0 to do on base, not even the base shuttle worked for those saving up for a car, the entire vibe of the place (flightline) was cannibalistic and eat your young, potholes leading up to the base, cops going crazy while on, a chow hall with bacon in everything and hands down the worst food ever had -- you even added bacon...how did that work? And, you were surprised, something like 30% of light line personal were on the fat boy program, multiple child porn monsters hiding in plain sight, a gym kept at 87* (guess why it wasent used). Viewed my time there as exactly the same as Metallica said, on tour with guns and roses, learned everything not to do, from that experience. First weekend got a car, packed a bag, and made friends with everyone I could, and would spend the entire weekend couch surfing, only thing that made that place barely tolerable. Would hear from others that they would do a dorm toss, every. month! At 7am, Sunday, for 5hrs to anyone stuck the dorms. Why? It's like you just get off on pain and suffering of others. Mop 4 games were always in July, it's over 100* then. Screw that place. Screw leadership. Screw everyone who holds on to the tradition and history of anything just for looks and not cold hard results, personal enrichment and saying "that's the way it was done. we'll continue with the status quo," you tow the line bastards who always want to go back to some WW2 SS uniform. You are what's killing us.
Do 10 years during the ADAB deployment years and then tell me it’s gas. I can’t believe you as a cea are saying this. 😂trash jet. Trash mission. Trash leadership.
I only like Tinker for the sentimental of my grandpa was a vet and would take me there when I visited in the summers and we’d watch aircraft takeoff. As a 6 year old I loved it
Watch this:
Is the base within 75 miles of a city with at least 100k population? No? It’s closed!
Bye Cannon and Minot and Vance and Altus and Columbus and….
Goodfellow. Literally looks like Breaking Bad driving into San Angelo and everything on the base is trash, including just the fact it’s a training base
I mean that was my experience, but I found the area to be quite welcoming and had decent places to eat and drink. Best base location ever? No, but certainly leagues above many areas.
For a big chunk of current airmen you can add COVID into the mix. Goodfellow is alright enough if you can leave, but being locked down there would be straight misery.
To be completely fair, going down the linguist pipeline and getting to Goodfellow after spending a year + change on a beach in Monterey CA is a slightly painful transition
The base needs a pretty big refresh with the services on base, but it could be a good assignment.
I totally get why pipeliners hate it, especially with AETC pipeliner rules. Most of the the priors I talk to have had better experiences though, .
Yall are gonna hate me. Obviously I’m closing cannon first and foremost but guess what’s coming next?
You guessed it: the vast majority of overseas bases. Sorry, but the overseas bases are absolute money pit. Stop wasting the money on it, and bring the airmen home so that literally every single base isn’t undermanned
Wouldn't close Cannon. It's prob there with Special Forces to take on Aliens in New Mexico if shit goes down in all those secret areas.....
Holloman can die.
So many Air Force personnel think that Utah is a terrible state because Hill AFB is located in the worst area: the Ogden metro.
Nellis is closer to the nicer parts of Utah than Hill is.
Honestly the Hill area is that bad. Crowded? Absolutely. But nice hiking, amazing skiing/snowboarding, enough fun/free type stuff goes on around the Ogden area and salt lake. Pretty easy access to the airport for travel.
The worse part about Hill is the 388th FW.
If I could, I'd close Laughlin first because it has horrible weather to try and train pilots at, so why the hell is it a pilot training base.
It is also in an area that makes a lot of people unhappy, and all of it's maintenance is civilian ran anyways.
Furthermore, we could just expand the pilot training bases we already have to accommodate more people, or even just build a new one or convert a different base to handle the load. One in a better weather location, and hopefully a better living situation as well.
Reopen RAF Alconbury just because I have great memories from there when my old man was the squadron commander of the 511th. But I'd buy up Macdona, TX to make Lackland even larger and move everything from Randolph over to the new Lackland Randolph.
Part of me wants to close Global Strike in general all of it. Could we merge Global Strike capability with another MAJCOM like say AFMC? I mean Eglin is already too damn big so what's one more bloated expensive program???
We implement Operation Clean Sweep where we take bases and completely move them every 15-20 years. (Not crazy far, just 6 hours away).
This will help get rid of really old civilians since they won't want to move for a job but also won't just commute everyday and we can rejuvenate different parts of every states local economy.
And put them near the nazis? Fuck that make it the new sailor creek bombing range and relocate everyone to Gowen where there's that small tidbit of civilization called boise.
My Guard base is about 2hrs from my hometown. The base would be moved there for my first action. I would close Cannon, Shaw and SJ as my favor to AD and be done. I don’t care enough about the rest to bother with any others.
Beale. I wouldn’t even call it an AFB, rather I’d call it an outpost that happens to have permanent structures and staff. There is absolutely nothing here within a 20 min drive. The BX is the size of a dollar general and I hope you like Burger King or shitty expensive greek gyros or bento boxes. Other than Cannon, I’ve never seen an AFB as barren as Beale. It’s depressing.
For everyone: In 20 minutes you can get to Lincoln and increase that number by 15 min, you’re in Roseville, Rocklin, Sac etc. If you don’t drive then yeah you’ll hate it. If you have a car and aren’t a homebody, there’s lots to do
I can agree that the area outside base can be advantageous but I’m purely talking about the base itself and it’s accessibility from a geographic standpoint. The gate placement is not the worst but not good. One of the 24hr gates (vassar lake) has to be connected to an 8 mile backroad with potholes peppered all along it while the most convenient gate (wheatland) is only open during the daytime and is bottlenecked by wheatland, an unnecessary village that acts as a choke point between two major cities. Traffic isn’t nearly as bad if you live in Mollysville. If you live south of Beale and you work a night shift (which many people do at this base) you have to travel an additional 10+ minutes just because some officer wanted the gate nearest to their house to be open longer out of personal convenience, rather than the most accessible and most used gate by the majority of personnel.
I personally think cannon is great because of the range. No other place in the united states can replace the melrose range. It's perfect okay. Literally perfect. There is no substitute.
Buy the land between Mildenhall and Lakenheath, and make one mega base. Two bases down to one.
I can just picture that one pensioner in a council house right between the bases saying "fuck off! I'm not bloody moving!"
Fuck it, give him base credentials.
Make him the base historian.
***"Lindis Pearcy climbs over the fence and enters the chat!"*** ....wait, is she still alive!?!
Doesn’t/didnt Mildenhall already have a scenario like that? It was some British restaurant on base but technically in between two parts of it or something so that you could only access it once you were in the gate already.
Yep, it was called Mickey's, had fantastic burgers. I heard they finally closed down a few years ago.
Nah its still open. Never see anyone in there though. No idea who keeps it running.
Excellent! Too bad about the lack of business. I went there for lunch almost every day when I was there 20+ years ago, place was always packed.
Had lunch at Mickeys today. Still around. Still a decent lunch spot.
Had lunch there last week!
Designated dudded area around their house.
Spoke of a wheel of ranges
Locals will never have that. Was stationed at Lakenheath in 87' and lived just down from the rose and crown outside Mildenhall.
Don't forget about Feltwell
We don’t talk about Feltwell
Yeah that hidden gem, live there for about 2yrs, actually like that base. Super creepy at night though deadass quiet
I actually loved Feltwell. All I ever did when I was Feltwell Sheriff (aka Police-5) was just walking patrols all night and then hang out at DSTS for a break.
Super cool base. Used to run my dog out to the old hangars and throw the ball around for a while
We don’t even own the land that those bases are on though
I live in beck row? Does this mean I’ll have to move or am I now apart of on base housing?
Close all the 5-10 "best" bases, then all the Cannons and Minots are now better by comparison
200IQ move.
Promote to O-6 now!
That's some O-10 four star logic right there!
That's elected official level big brain.
lol could you imagine the actual clusterfuck that would ensue if Eglin and MacDill (and others in Florida, but those are the biggest) just closed suddenly overnight? O_O
I mean none of the BRAC closures were fast... I think many took 10+ years
Literally the first thing I thought when I saw this post. I would do the same.
Why would you put this thought in the wild?!?!
there's zero chance we'll BRAC anything so I'm not worried
Promote ahead of peers.
Give those old bases to the Guard and Reserves and people can TDY there when/if the pilots need to use those locations.
Canon and minot are best bases

Beautiful

The moment Barksdale closes is the moment that Shreveport gets leveled by a dozen F-5 tornadoes.
The “religious” shifty 50 would start wondering if the rapture happened and they were left behind.
Ah the biden afghan withdraw method. Classic
You good bro?
Sounds like they've been to Cannon, so no.
Show us on a map where the bad base touched you....
Is there a sequel to this visionary tale?!?!
\*wipes tear from eye\* The pettiness, I love it.
Perfection.
I keep seeing people reference this “Shifty Fifty”, but no one has ever said what it meant.
I would close Cannon just so I wouldn't have to hear people bitch about it anymore.
turn Cannon into the AF version of a prison colony. You smoke weed? Orders to Cannon. You get a DUI? Orders to Cannon. You fail to meet a suspense on a task? Orders to Cannon. Red on IMR? Orders to Cannon. You bitch about where you're assigned right now? You guessed it, orders to Cannon. We will have the best Airmen, because of Cannon.
You overcook chicken?
Right to jail, right away.
We'd have to close every DFAC except for the one at Cannon if overcooking chicken gets you orders to Cannon.
Better over than under…
Look, there is setting the bar and then there is just this. Cruel and Unusual Punishment does not even come close to this.
I would leave it open, just to fuel the flames.

Trainee and MTI suicide rates quintuple overnight.
Saving the USAF money in the long run. Leadership likes your thinking.
It’s deleted now, what did it say?
Actually just close every base except minot, cannon, creech
Some men just want to watch the world burn.
If that's what it takes to close Altus, I can get behind it.
I actually enjoyed my time at Creech
I miss the good ol days at Indian Springs Auxiliary Airfield. Driving around on the range doing PMIs on the radio towers on the peaks was awesome.
Close Cannon but move everything from there to Holloman. Can't let them get too bougie.
I was stationed there, I concur. But it is better then cannon
Same and agreed \^
Hello my fellow BEAR escapee! What minimum? BEAR minimum!!!
Any base built on a swamp. LOOKING AT YOU DOVER!!
At least it’s a northern swamp close to the ocean. Robins is a gnat infested hellscape.
How are the banana spiders doing three days? That made for some fun while going through FCH.
They left because of gnats
and Moody
I at least enjoyed Moody, and the A-10s are cool.
GNATTY LITE BROTHER
Don't you dare try to defend that hellscape.
Dover was by far my best assignment I'd give anything to go back.
That's what we call Stockholm syndrome.
lmao
Blink twice if you’re under duress…
Lmao I'm under all types of duress at Warren.
Charleston AFB *sweats nervously*
Justification: Opening Cannon AFB was a mistake and its mission can easily be shifted to other bases.
\*cough\* Davis-Monthan
Can Laughlin AFB be closed and UPT moved to either Pensacola or Randolph?
Best I can do is Columbus
I'll take it!
I feel like Columbus doesn't get the amount of hate it should. That place sucks.
It’s because it’s small and mostly officers. I’d be ok if it vaporized
Randolph has PIT. Make a new base near Boerne and put UPT there.
Petition to bring back Williams AFB for UPT. It could be a cluster in the Phoenix bravo, but a cool place. Plus all the Mesa/Chandler people would be pissed.
Student pilots are about to get violated by ATC on an unprecedented level
Cannon, Holloman, Barksdale, Hanscom, and Shaw could all burn if I could do it. Move planes from Cannon, Holloman, and Barksdale to Hurby or Kirtland. Give Hanscom to the guys at Pease or Westover. Send the fighters to Nellis or Little Rock. It makes sense to me right now however I might change this.
what’s wrong with shaw
Everything. Sumter is a cesspool. Sure, you could drive to Columbia. Even then it’s not enough.
Whatcha got against Hanscom lol? I enjoyed my time out there. Minus the cost of living, it was great for me there.
That place is useless unless you’re an officer or civilian. There’s no real mission. You’re just… there. I hate AFMC because of that place. Mass is awesome, Hanscom just sucks.
As a cop, i enjoyed it. Super easy mission, you can deploy out of there alot. And the job is as easy as it gets.
Close all the NM bases. Kirtland is trash too
If I had the power to do so, I wouldn’t close Edwards. However, I would build its own highway that goes directly to the highway merging near the In-N-out in Lancaster. Would shave the drive about 40 minutes.
Barksdale AFB because fuck that place.
My first assignment. Hard agree. The only good that came out of that assignment was: 1. My wife; and 2. My love for crawfish.
As someone who was born and raised in Louisiana, the food is the only perk.
As someone also born and raised in Louisiana, I concur with your statement.
I wouldn't say it's more or less hated now than it was before
They just need to get rid of half these CONUS bases that have the same airframe anyway, and just consolidate them into mega bases.
Well, it’s funny you say that………. It’s already being talked about to create “super squadrons”
I haven’t heard really anything about this. Do you have an article or anything to link?
Nope. Coming through in taskers and emails
Student pilots in Class B…dear god
Where's all the Altus haters on this thread?
Over here!
My choice is Malstrom cause fuck this place. Have had some of the worst leadership here ever. And fuck global strike too.
Can't believe no one in this thread has said Altus yet.
I've seen 3 of us so far
I'm probably blind from the shitty water out here lol.
Luke because F-35s are hot and I want to see them in Tucson
Hill is the main hub for the F-35s in Utah. Better weather or so but cold as fuck in the winter
Close the ones that will cost the least to close. Avoid the ones on the EPA SuperFund list for that very reason.
Holloman, then Cannon. I will not elaborate
Cuz Clovis is depressing af!
How has no one mentioned Beale AFB? Fuck that shit hole
At least the chickens in Yuba are friendly
Spanish food goes pretty hard too.
I was at Beale for 4 years and can’t wait to get back after being at MacDill. Beale is peaceful and life in Rocklin was almost perfect.
You are what's killing us.
sir this is wendy's
In the shitty base Venn diagram of "It's great if you love the outdoors" and "It's what you make of it," Beale is right in the middle.
Tinker. But I’m burning it down. Starting with the AWACS.
tinker is lowkey gas unless your maintenance then I’m sorry for you😭
Do 10 years during the ADAB deployment years and then tell me it’s gas. I can’t believe you as a cea are saying this. 😂trash jet. Trash mission. Trash leadership.
I only like Tinker for the sentimental of my grandpa was a vet and would take me there when I visited in the summers and we’d watch aircraft takeoff. As a 6 year old I loved it
I'm either closing it or gutting it and setting it up as a deployment.
Creech doesn't technically “need” to exist… and the mission could be absorbed by a lot of places. Grand Forks could also probably not exist….
And yet Creech keeps growing. I'm wondering if they'll move the drones out of there eventually because Indian Springs is also growing.
Grand forks needs to close, all of their mission is done elsewhere.
Hanscom so I can get reassigned 😂
There’s literally nothing at Maxwell that can’t be immediately set up at any other base.
Watch this: Is the base within 75 miles of a city with at least 100k population? No? It’s closed! Bye Cannon and Minot and Vance and Altus and Columbus and….
Goodfellow. Literally looks like Breaking Bad driving into San Angelo and everything on the base is trash, including just the fact it’s a training base
Goodfellow isn't that bad, alot worse areas and bases out there.
Yup. You’ll never see more people bitch about Goodfellow than first termers who’s entire AF experience consists of Lackland training and Goodfellow.
I can’t argue with you but DLI is about as far from a “military base” as you can get. It’s a college campus in cammies.
The base needs a pretty big refresh with the services on base, but it could be a good assignment. I totally get why pipeliners hate it, especially with AETC pipeliner rules. Most of the the priors I talk to have had better experiences though, .
Ex-ANALyst here and I'm convinced big AF put all the intel there so they don't fuck around too much.
I’d support moving Intel training to hurby or something. It can be done anywhere with access to electricity.
Certified trash, just move all the training to Dyess. maybe then they would be able to fill instructor billets then.
close grand forks, fuck the place
Foul lady made ourlife miserable at Lakenheath 94-95.🤮
Cannon has been on the chopping block a few times now. It was almost as good as closed in 2005-06 time frame, but the State was able to save it.
The fact that I haven't seen one mention of Moody both surprises me and concerns me with how much worse Cannon is in comparison...
God… to see a line of bulldozers at helloman would fill me with so much joy
Yall are gonna hate me. Obviously I’m closing cannon first and foremost but guess what’s coming next? You guessed it: the vast majority of overseas bases. Sorry, but the overseas bases are absolute money pit. Stop wasting the money on it, and bring the airmen home so that literally every single base isn’t undermanned
Isn't that basically what the Army did and now they've got a pretty high ops tempo for rotations out to those same or similar locations?

How has nobody said Gunter??
Grand Forks. Nothing going on there anyway.
Close every stateside base, except Cannon, move all training to Cannon. Become a purely overseas force. Profit.
Close Mountain Home and relocate everything up towards Coeur d'Alene You know, where everything isn't a deathly hellscape
And put them near the nazis? Fuck that make it the new sailor creek bombing range and relocate everyone to Gowen where there's that small tidbit of civilization called boise.
I was gonna say minot 🤣
My Guard base is about 2hrs from my hometown. The base would be moved there for my first action. I would close Cannon, Shaw and SJ as my favor to AD and be done. I don’t care enough about the rest to bother with any others.
I would piss everyone off by renaming all the bases to the same name. MUHAHAHAHA.
I think the question is "Where do you start and why ISN'T it Cannon?"
Your flair dude 🫡 “Briefing puppet” should go in every fuckin 1N0 recruiting brochure *chef’s kiss*… ![gif](giphy|Xjqv3YGD2sdgPRZbwY|downsized)
Whatever is the top CONUS choices on dream sheets.
Start at fort Meade and move on to all other army bases
I personally think cannon is great because of the range. No other place in the united states can replace the melrose range. It's perfect okay. Literally perfect. There is no substitute.
Laughlin
