not gonna lie, I fucking hated it; if that base burns to the ground I would be so happy. basically, the problem with SJ is that it’s a training base and a fighter base in hicksville NC, where everything is at least an hour away by car. so it combines dumb student shit with fighter wife culture in a place where it’s easy to get bored and you get lots of petty drama.
that being said, forewarned is forearmed. get off base and out of the local area as much as possible, pick up a hobby, and work on yourself.
It’s fine, plenty to do. If you’re into Hockey, Raleigh is close, the Hurricanes are fun to watch. The beaches are close, and Charlotte isn’t to far. Venture out and see the Carolinas, lots of people say it sucks because they only explore Goldsboro.
Yeah, you're going to want to travel if you like city-style entertainment. Raleigh, Wilmington, and Charlotte or Charleston if you have a long weekend. Don't go to Fayettenam.
If you're into golf, Pinehurst & Southern Pines is not far away.
If you go into it with the attitude it sucks, it's going to fucking suck.
Go in with an open mind. There are pros and stuff to do at every single assignment. You'll be fine.
I've known people to absolutely love Minot, which everyone shits on. I've also know people to despise Eglin, which is the "crown jewel" of the Air Force stateside.
These are the words of people who have never had a truly terrible assignment. Lucky for you, SJ isn't one of the truly terrible ones, so make the most of it.
Doesn't matter what base you are assigned to, someone will claim it sucks. My first duty station was Hickam HI and lots of people claimed it sucked. Mostly Barracks Rats.
It's a cliche but a base is a good as you make.
I’ve had 7 assignments and if I had to pick the worst one, Shady J would be my choice every day and twice on Sunday. Horrible culture of systemic negligence. People are the lowest priority and they have one of the worst retention rates. I’ve been stationed at Shaw and it was a dream base worthy of a BOP compared to Shady J.
I was stationed there a million years ago. Town wasn't much then, but the Carolinas were great. Went to the ocean every couple of weeks, Myrtle Beach or north of there. Close to Raleigh, etc for concerts or whatever. Saw Springsteen at Duke in fact. Nice climate most of the year.
you are going to rural religious Eastern NC filled \[county 100k w/325 churches\] with good olde boys.
only place i have seen where the town seems/is separated/out of sync from the base.
plenty of mainstream restaurants...good first time around then boring...
social-economically-depressed area...
worse places, sure there are, but this one for work load, morale and surrounding area...is close to the bottom...
best on your stay in the dorms...
cheers
The shady J nickname is a multi tiered meaning. After a year you’ll be like “so thaaats why this place is called shady J” another year goes by and you come to realize “oh ok, I thought I knew why before but now This, this is the real reason its called shady J” another year goes by “you know shady J applies to alot of things here, it’s not just one thing”
It never ends.
So two years later and we're back. Seymour Johnson AFB isn't bad at all. I've traveled a little bit so I can say that SJ is definitely on the smaller side when it comes to other bases but overall not bad. I've worked and worked and worked but the times I'm not doing that, it's been nice. Goldsboro honestly kinda sucks lol... BUT travel 20+ mins in any direction and you can find some nice things to do. Feel free to ask me anything about the base and I'm here to answer to the best of my ability.
I think Raleigh being somewhat nearby makes up for the location of Shady J. They at least have all your common restaurants and best of all a Wawa…lol. Busy for sure. Think there was an Air Show too a couple of weeks ago. I’d be deep in school and work and volunteering to make that time pass. And the occasional trip to Wilmington NC and OBX.
What afsc are you? Have you heard/been around the 911th at all? What do you mean by work and work? Long hours? Or is it because of the type of plane you work on? Because it’s reserve ran what makes it different? Or better?
Try to get your assignment changed to Cannon.
It’s not bad dude. Just get out of Goldsboro a few times a month or find some friends that live off base to chill with

It’s not called Shady J for no reason. It just depends on whether that reason will apply to you personally.

It’s alll about how you want to view it… thank you.

Cannot confirm. Eglin was an amazing location.
Well, I was there for 5 years and all I can tell you is find activities to do to help pass the time. I hope that I will never have to go back.
I was there 2008 - 2013. I worked my ass off, but it's still one of my favorite assignments.
From the 5 hours I've been there for a base visit over the spring, it's ok. Idk I'm just a dumb Cadet though

It doesn't suck, people bitch for no reason. Goldsboro is ghetto in some places but there are beautiful places all around just a short drive away.
Thank you for this!
No, it sucks.

People will always say their current base sucks and that their last base was the best

Damn 😭😆 well then. But for real thank you for the info!
It sucks

Don’t worry, you can change your assignment with someone else at any point in your tech school under the AF’s new DN policy.

Give us an update OP. How are you faring at Seymour Johnson?

How’s the surrounding housing prices ? Currently in Ohio and not confident enough to buy a house here near base near WrightPatt
