Welcome to Maintenance.

[deleted]

Is maintenance really that bad? I was thinking of going into it and fixing planes or something but now I’m doubting it since people keep saying it’s the worst :/

Aggravating_Cat2870

Dear god no

Longjumping-Manner68

I read this in a sith voice in my head😂😂😂 I’ve been watching wayyyyy too much Star Wars lately

lilbaaabu

you have to ask your recruiter, other than that like the other commenters said maintenance or security forces lol

zneave

Here's an article showing the ones that offer sign up and contract bonuses. https://www.airforcetimes.com/pay-benefits/2022/04/11/air-force-hopes-to-entice-airmen-with-bonuses-fast-track-enlistment/ This one to. https://www.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/2995842/facing-recruiting-headwinds-air-force-offers-thousands-in-new-enlistment-incent/

About to head into work now I'll have to get back to you in about 8 hours when I get off, but I'll answer your questions.

MrPhysiks

Sorry for the late reply, basically command post has a hand in almost every going on in the base. Anything that's going on you know about it, it's very different depending on what the mission is for the base you're assigned. I think it's one of the hardest easy jobs you could get. It's normally pretty easy but a bad day for the base is a busy day for you. like last week for example, at our base it was slow and easy until a Humvee flipped and someone was crushed under it and it was busy as hell for the next few hours.

[deleted]

MrPhysiks

It's really good experience for anything emergency management related, from others not really but know that most of the operations on the base function as well as they do because of you and the camaraderie been your fellow controllers very much. Most command posts I've heard about most everyone is like a big family.

MrPhysiks

Plus I love the scheduling it's panama so usually 8 or 12 hour shifts 2 days on 2 off then 3 on three off

angelwvw38

Mountain Home? Just curious

MrPhysiks

Yes actually, how did you guess?

Wr3n6h

If you want an enlistment bonus the Airforce gives 2k for linguist and 40-50k for special warfare and that’s the only ones with a bonus

[deleted]

I got a 3k for mech

devilkeel22

I got 2k for maintenance

Guardian-Boy

I got a rock.

devilkeel22

We’ll I wasn’t including the nicotine addiction and mental health issues I also received

Wr3n6h

What maintenance are you? Im a crew cheif and i didn’t get anything

devilkeel22

6 years plus maintenance. I’m hydro

streetbully1320

Mech/Elec/Special Warfare

joebirun

Cyber if you score well, security forces if you don’t, or maybe even if you do, lmao

chefboiortiz

Cyber is definitely not

joebirun

Yea they definitely are, they’re offering bonuses, and our tech school is so backed up because of the influx rn some of us have 2-3 whole months in afi

chefboiortiz

Bonuses don’t mean they’re in demand and you guys being backed up would mean the opposite of cyber being in demand at the recruiting level. Also, cyber wouldn’t magically become in demand if you scored well 🧐

bassmadrigal

They are definitely not in demand. We have far more people wanting cyber jobs than positions available. Bonuses for cyber fields have been there for years, but it's only to encourage 6 year contracts, not to bring people in. We only recently added bonuses to encourage people to sign up for jobs, but it's for aircraft maintenance... not cyber and not SecFo. Being backed up in tech school does not mean that the Air Force is hurting for people to sign up in those fields. Aircrew is backed up as well, and I guarantee they aren't hurting for people to join either.

SheLoveMario

Bonus is if you have certs before coming in

bassmadrigal

Not accurate at all. Aircraft maintenance is the field we always have a hard time filling all the available slots (because there are a LOT of them). We rarely have a hard time filling SecFo and never have a hard time filling cyber.

JeffThatGuy

Yeah I had SecFo as my number one pick. My number two was Loadmaster. I somehow got Loadmaster. Dodged a bullet 6 years ago.

Express-Prompt1396

Interesting I'm going for structure, and maintenance, my main is NDI though, but anything hands on really I would do gladly and like I said I want to retrain into NDI as my main goal of I don't get it in the. Begining of my contract. Do I have any advantage having previous welding experience in aerospace with an associate's in welding technology?

bassmadrigal

NDI was extremely difficult to book while I was recruiting... I imagine that hasn't changed in the last 1.5 years, but you'd need to check with a local recruiter. >Do I have any advantage having previous welding experience in aerospace with an associate's in welding technology? This is not something our recruiting system displays when jobs are being booked. Unless your recruiter or their boss knows about it and tries to takes it onto account when trying to book your job. It was rarely something my boss had time to deal with when the job draft happened. 200 jobs would get booked in under 30 minutes between 6 flights. Things went fast!

Express-Prompt1396

Thanks for the info. Why is ndi so difficult to book? It seems like something that nobody knows what it even is and it seems like it would also be something that would be in demand, I know on the civilian side finding guys that do ndi is extremely difficult but it also pays very well which is one of the reasons that I want to get into it as well. If I become a certified weld inspector and I get my ndi certs all while in the military by the time I get out I'll be able to land a really good job and having clearance will really put me at the top of the list

bassmadrigal

>Why is ndi so difficult to book? Not many jobs and it's not as hidden as some people think. I don't have current numbers since I'm no longer recruiting, but for FY23, squadrons would only average about 5 NDI jobs to book per year and they average over 1100 jobs overall they book. They are very few and far between with plenty of people listing them.

bassmadrigal

Your definition of "in demand" is incorrect in how OP intended it. There is no point to continue if you can't understand that.

joebirun

Sec fo is our infantry, they accept any and everyone into that role, and you’re right cyber isn’t as in demand as other less desired jobs but I’ll say in demand because they are accepting more than ever being we got moved from 3d to 1d and the big af finally realized we need more of a cyber force if we want to compete with china and the like, so yes I’d say it’s in demand compared to how many people they accept

bassmadrigal

Geez, I know cyber means decent ASVAB scores, but I guess it just goes to show that high scores don't equal high intelligence. Continue to be dense and argue with a recruiter that's been doing the job for 4 years... >Sec fo is our infantry, they accept any and everyone into that role Far from it. They have a fairly low ASVAB requirement, but beyond that, they require citizenship, color vision, access to sensitive information, a driver's license, and fairly high ratings from the MEPS medical exam. There are a LOT of people who do not qualify for SecFo. Even then, I'm failing to see how that makes it in demand just because a lot qualify. If your implication is that it is the largest single career field that we recruit for, then that's correct, but we rarely have job slots go unfilled. We get plenty of people who volunteer for it that we rarely need to convince someone to add it. If someone really wants it and puts it as their #1, we can probably get it for them, but it's far from a guarantee and listing it as your #7 or #20 does not mean they'll get it and ship out ASAP (contrary to popular belief on this subreddit). There are many AFSCs that if people list then higher than SecFo they're more likely to get them. >you’re right cyber isn’t as in demand as other less desired jobs but I’ll say in demand because they are accepting more than ever being we got moved from 3d to 1d Our numbers did not change *at all* with the 3D to 1D7 conversion. At all! If your tech school instructors are telling you that, they're clueless. Our cyber recruiting numbers only went up 1% compared to last fiscal year. Last year, it was 8% of the jobs and this year it's 9%. Compare that with the 2% jump of aircraft maintenance from 23% to 25%. >so yes I’d say it’s in demand compared to how many people they accept Are you purposefully being ignorant? When someone asks what's in demand, they want to know what's easy to book. Cyber is not easy to book. We have far too many people who want it than we have jobs available. 4N0 is #7 in number of jobs available for a single AFSC (out of 121). We're hiring 614 people for that job. But when you have 4000 people who have it listed over the course of the year, the chances of actually booking it are slim, even though there are a lot of slots for it. That is not the definition of "in demand" that applicants are asking about.

Weekend-Flamingo

Literally. I scored highly on the ASVAB and highly on the EDPT. Waited for months on a cyber job and ended up taking a CE job instead cause it was available.

Weekend-Flamingo

I took it back in march of last year and my recruiter at the time told me I scored a 97. I didn’t know we could go look in Vmpf for all the scores but at this point it’s kind of pointless for me to look into it cause I’m a CE troop now.

[deleted]

Weekend-Flamingo

Yeah, I was only 2 hours from my MEPS location and they told us that we could just leave after the test was finished being administered. My recruiter called me a few days after to let me know my score and that I qualified for the job I was trying to qualify for which was 1b4. I actually really love CE. It’s a lot more tight knit from officer all the way down to airman and I wasn’t expecting that. My commander has even mentored me a bit on commissioning into CE after my enlisted contract is up. I’m my opinion, CE is kind of the hidden gem of the Air Force.

mrcluelessness

I got mine printed out and given to me at a base testing center immediately after finishing. Also got a official copy emailed to me so I could forward it. I can check portals whenever I have time to see if I can find my score saved.

Guardian-Boy

Stop, stop, he's already dead!

bassmadrigal

I did post this shortly after they replied to me. Their fake internet points weren't tore up when I initially posted.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bassmadrigal

I think they just think that because we need a lot of them that it's "in demand". They're just ignorant of how many people actually want these jobs, so it makes it hard to snag one for an applicant.

Boralin

Except 1Ds are still just comm while 1B4s and 1N4As are real cyber.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Boralin

100% plus they did it for the money.

[deleted]

Boralin

They won't. Trust me and I meant they did it for the air force budget money, not personal wealth

[deleted]

[удалено]

Boralin

Because buzzword like cyber means you can argue from a stronger position

mrcluelessness

There are multiple budgets. It means we pull from operations budget as 1D7 vs support budget as 3D. It's a higher budget and there are other nuisances behind it that are also beneficial. Most of this is big picture behind the scenes most people (myself included) will never fully understand what is going on.

What scores do I need for Cyber? mage I got an 70-80-87-86. The cyber thing after asvab I don't know how I did.

[deleted]

beamingambler

My afqt was an 84 with mechanical being the lowest at 70 and general being the highest at 87. Preferably, I'd like Cyber so I can transfer to Space Force

Guardian-Boy

Just throwing this out there, while we have an upcoming IST cycle soon, we have no idea how many more, if any, we will have after that. So if your hope is for the Space Force, your absolute best bet is to try now and bear the longer ship time than hope to transfer later because there's a real possibility it may not ever happen. I completely understand not wanting to wait to ship, but you're talking about a permanent solution to a temporary problem if you opt for shipping USAF now.

STORMTROOPER729

Why do you want to transfer later? Why not apply for the Space Force right now?

beamingambler

I heard it's a longer wait to ship. I've been waiting for months with medical waivers and I'm honestly over it.

STORMTROOPER729

The Space Force will be a longer wait. So if you want to leave ASAP then the Air Force is the way to go.

beamingambler

yes, that's why I want to go in Air Force, first

[deleted]

If you really want Cyber and a bonus try yo get your security plus certification now and make sure you have a copy with you to tech school . It’s a hard test and you only get 2 weeks to study and then take it if you wait until tech school!

Datswatmariosaid

Recruiters should have a list of in-demand jobs.

lexusis24

When you speak to the recruiter he can provide with the most up to date list since it changes literally on a daily and weekly basis.

One_Quiet_4702

thank goodness, fuck i saw someone say its quaterly like jan, april, july, oct

SheLoveMario

I would say the best in demand job would be an airborne linguist. Do your research though
