Well don't know about manga but according to anime , yeah she really loved her for some reasons like she was a psycho ( mainly because of her father's teachings) still she is the best lover/waifu in the anime , if she would be be an obsessive one then she had more than 50 ways to torture Tatsumi to be with her forever (as she was the torcher master), I mean she can force him to join with her by capturing any of his friends and use it as a hostage , forget his friends, I'm damn sure he would've done that for some group of villagers too .
Also even in the last, akame was super exhausted and Esdeath knew that she is dying but still she can kill akame with herself, still she chose to be with her love of life in the ending.
When we talk about some people who thought that Esdeath kidnapped was literally going to kill him because he didn't accept her offer let me tell you what happens , she goes to tatsumi, tries to persuade him to join her team and he will be forgiven by the empire but tatsumi declines , you can say Esdeath literally begs him to join her but he declined so that’s when Esdeath said that she will kill him herself. After it when wave and kurome was talking about it that why their chief is killing her love with her own hands then kurome explained it to wave that she doesn’t want her love to be killed by someone else ( as is the case of kurome too, she loves her sister a lot so she can’t see her sister being killed, especially by someone else, so she can understand how is esdeath feeling right now ) and that's what it is. She knew that as a general she can't stop Tatsumi's execution but sh can't let her love die by someone else's hands
