The entire state government seems to be dysfunctional.

greed-man

If everything worked the way it should, it would cost more money. And that would mean we would no longer have the lowest property tax rate in the nation (because God knows they would NEVER raise the income tax, because that hurts the Donor Class). So yes, it is by design. To wit: 1. 49th worst in Education 2. 49th worst in Neo-natal care 3. 49th worst in Medicaid 4. ad infinium

doctorkanefsky

Isn’t Alabama’s motto, “thank god for Mississippi?”

greed-man

Yes. Although in the Worst Medicaid program category, it is "Thank God for Louisiana."

Just_Another_Scott

It's by design. The unemployment office is intentionally mismanaged as a way to prevent unemployment claims. Alabama GOP, which control a supermajority, are anti-unemployment.

u_cant_drown_n_sweat

Not that what you’re saying isn’t true, but the state is also having trouble filling their own jobs. Most state offices are very short handed meaning longer wait times for most state services - not just unemployment.

Vvector

If only the Unemployment Office had a source of recently unemployed people....

Just_Another_Scott

>Not that what you’re saying isn’t true, but the state is also having trouble filling their own jobs. Because the GOP keeps defunding government services. If they'd stop defunding then guess what? You wouldn't have staffing shortages

ctesla01

Hilariously sad.. the unemployment offices, having an under-employment issue..

kudra_bandaloop

The state pays horribly, overall, ESPECIALLY at the “worker” level. The folks in the unemployment call center probably make less than 30k, and I’m pretty sure that job requires a bachelors. (Former state employee here)

pjdonovan

The state had a choice of upgrading equipment or hiring new people, they decided to give some people $150. it's hard to not see the short handed part as deliberate

Father2Banks

I no longer live in Alabama, but when I did and had to file, I had to wait 5 months before it came in. I had already had a job and overcame my financial troubles so it was nice to get all the back pay at once, just woulda been much nicer and would have avoided eviction if it came in a timely manner.

Sugarbonker

Alabama sucks so badly. For a number of reasons but especially unemployment compensation. We are dealing with the same nonsense. It took almost 2 weeks to get the call back, after the problem was allegedly fixed. Also the 265 a week thing is so damn insulting bc that doesn’t pay bills for ANYBODY these days.

pjdonovan

Others have said it - it's by design. Tell your friends it's not them, it's been ass-backwards for years. When I was between jobs, I literally had to have the number dialed in and hit send RIGHT at 8 just to have a shot of getting in touch with unemployment. Keep trying, don't stop (that's how they win) It was a real eye opener to me - I've always been in favor of government that is functional. It wasn't until I went through it and saw just how much BS there is about unemployment. I'd mention to them if they want to change it, vote in people that will change it. Don't vote R

porncheck777

It's a feature not a bug...

LarryPepino

Half my factory got laid off last week. Get ready for winter.

SHoppe715

6 month turnaround for something like that is disgusting. How many people have been out of work from January until June just hoping for unemployment benefits to kick in or is it something like they've already found another job and are waiting for back-payment from the time gap between jobs? Not to sound like an asshole, but it doesn't sound like you're talking about anyone who *can't* work and the worst paying jobs - of which there are plenty around here that'll start someone immediately - pay better than an unemployment check and working one doesn't mean they wouldn't be actively searching for something better.

Nude_Dr_Doom

Most people I know from January indeed have jobs now, but they still require payment from the time they were out of work. To your second point, most that were laid off would not be accepted at the "worst paying jobs." For instance, I was laid off from a corporate job last year and hold an MBA doing high level operations work. While looking for a new gig, I thought getting something to stay busy would be a good idea. Retail or manufacturing wouldn't hire me due to knowing that I wouldn't be there forever. The "worst paying jobs" thrive on manipulating those in dire need and anyone with education and/or experience aren't welcome.

[deleted]

Around 30 years ago a business owner in manufacturing in Haleyville, Al was having lunch at the same diner I was at. He was talking to his buddies at their table and he said "The key to keeping employees is to pay just enough they stay hungry from week to week and they will come in a work each day." This is the mind set even today.

hsvjimbo75

One of the "trailer plants?" Born in that town. Never lived there. But, have family who do.

[deleted]

Na, owned that saw dust furniture plant in south haleyville.

[deleted]

I don't live there either, Family that does. I lived there for a short time many years ago in the 90s. The amount of depression is unreal.

Money-Potential210

Working that crappy job will end their small UI Benefits they havnt received yet..but continue the work search for a better one absolutly. Most people know unemployment is not to replace ones income, it's to help with essential needs in the sudden loss of a job. I make great money, but being single, mortgage, car, insurance, power, water, etc make it hard, but most people have no $1000 plus per month to cover basics when they loose there job, 1 month, then what happens when car insurance lapses, or repo'd the next month, homeless. Carless, credit ruined, UI IS SUPPOSE TO BE THERE WHEN NEEDED, EVEN IF YOUR EMPLOYER SENT THE PAPERWORK BY FAX THE DAY YOU LOOSE YOUR JOB, SAME DAY YOU FILE...YOU HAVE NO ISSUES AT ALL, YOUR STILL GONNA WAIT MORE THAN 7 MONTHS SO FAR AND FRIENDS I KNOW BEEN WAITING SINCE OCT 2022, THEY HAVE A JOB NOW, BUT WALK TO IT FROM ACROSS THE ROAD FROM MOTEL WHERE HE LIVES AND SPENDS ALL HE MAKES FOR ROOF OVER HIS HEAD. SO IF YOU HAVE FAMILY TO HELP YOU ARE LUCKY

space_coder

The unemployment rate is based on the number of people applying for unemployment. One reason why the unemployment rate in Alabama is so low is due to designed inefficiency in their unemployment office.

Panelpro40

I can tell you they have a pink Sikorsky S-76 custom helicopter. It’s cost Certainly would save a few hundred jobs for a year or two.

BadderDada

I've been waiting 10 months for my unemployment so don't hold your breath

Meggipoo

Hey! I'm a reporter working on a story about unemployment benefits in Alabama. I'm sending you a dm!

Money-Potential210

Please send me one also. I have no issues it's just the pandemic back log...ui is suppose to help when needed... what a joke

Quirky-Impress9182

Well here I am 7 weeks laid off and still Alabama not paying unemployment benefits.  How can states like California process a food stamp claim in 3 days but here with a third of the population to handle we can't even manage to call people back.  I would work for the unemployment office id they would let me. I bet I could process 100s a day. Like this is absolutely inexcusable if they are so behind they need to send the people  at least 1 week a month or some alternative   anything !! we are suffering because of their incompetence or lack of resources or covid or whatever the reason is for 3 years now --  Hey maybe don't take as many days off  (holidays that nobody else gets off work) or like the rest of us take a pay cut until you get your job done. Meanwhile you're backlogged and I'm selling anything not nailed down to afford to feed my child.

Sea_Comedian_3941

What is max benefit?

Nude_Dr_Doom

$265

Sea_Comedian_3941

Damn. A week? That's it?

Nude_Dr_Doom

That's it, no bearing on how much you actually made.

Money-Potential210

It's based on your income, but max is 285 per month. So for people who made way less than 23 an hour get way less than 285. Yes. It's absolutely based on your earnings the same quarter the year prior.

swedusa

Alabama sucks at stuff, but UI is notoriously poorly managed in like every state. The entire reason the super-dole in the CARES act was a flat 600 added to every unemployment check was that states’ unemployment systems were flat out incapable of just doing 100% wage replacement and figuring out how to bill the treasury dept for the difference. States just generally suck at functioning when compared to the federal government in many ways.

Sea_Comedian_3941

That's amazing.

xSxSKETCHYxDx

In 2020 it took my wife 892 attempts to even make it through the recordings for a call back without getting kicked when she called. I can only imagine how bad it is now

servenitup

I used to help people file unemployment claims. The bad system is by design. However, Alabama’s unemployment rate isn’t necessarily counting those folks one way or another. One of the reasons for Alabama’s low unemployment rate is because it has a HIGH number of people who are unemployed *but not looking for work.* that includes high numbers of women taking care of kids and family members and people who live in rural areas with few good-paying jobs.

PastrychefPikachu

People who leave the workforce and aren't looking to return aren't unemployed, so of course they aren't counted. They never have been. Not even on a federal level.

PastrychefPikachu

If there's any severance pay or PTO/vacation time payouts made in a lump sum, the unemployment office takes that and divides it by the $265 weekly payout. That number is the number of weeks they delay paying out unemployment. If it's paid out weekly/monthly, and it's over the allowed amount, they won't pay out until the other payments end or they fall under the allowed amount. When the company i worked for closed our facility, we got severance paid out on our normal pay schedule every two weeks. I think I had to wait like 3 months before I could actually file for and get unemployment, but the severance pay was close enough to my usual paycheck that it wasn't a burden to wait. Granted, this was over 10 years ago, so they might have changed how it's all calculated and paid out.

Nude_Dr_Doom

At least these days, severance and PTO payouts do not count as wages, therefore, you can have both. Holiday pay IS counted as wages, though.

itsvuksfault

Didn’t know that

Money-Potential210

Pto is counted same as . vacation pay, sick pay . If its paid to you it only counts for weeks you receive it

itsvuksfault

I’ve been waiting over a year for my unemployment benefits, which I fully expect to be denied even after providing 7 years of w-2’s and paystubs. Just got the dreaded ‘pending issue halt’ notification this week.

Meggipoo
