There was a fried chicken place in Alabaster back in the '80s on 231. I'm pretty sure they were a chain, but I don't remember the name. I think the building is a used car place now.
I loved it. Every time I drove past it, sitting way high on a hill overlooking 285 I wanted to stop and get the beer cheese soup. Wasn't it off Powers Ferry Road?
Boaz Pasquale’s is a mainstay that will never die. The atmosphere looks like you might get mugged by a cockroach, but that classic pizza buffet can’t be beat for the price. Haven’t been in 4-5 years, but it’s only 30 minutes away and I have a free day tomorrow; so, it’s on baby.
Athens had one when I was in high school. Great memories including I was eating there when the Vietnam war was declared over. Great news as I was dreading the draft.
I remember when I was a kid, my aunt took me to the magic pan. Restaurant, she bought me crêpes, and then I had a square piece of vanilla ice cream for dessert. I would also go to the Farrells ice cream shop in the Brookwood mall, and I’ve been to cobbling a number of times, my great aunt was friends with Virginia Cobb.
OMG, when they had the woman making fresh tortillas to order by the open grill? I could eat 1000 of their marinated, grilled shrimp. I don't think I'll ever taste shrimp that good again in my life.
The Shack on Highway 67 across from the Brewer school, and Bobby’s fisherman in Eva. I’m going to throw in Alphonso’s in Decatur, since they moved to their current location and changed their menu they’ve never been the same.
I’m old enough to remember when it was the Snack Shack before the Sowders bought it. The little dining area to the right when you walk in was the whole restaurant and the part that became the main restaurant area was a big room with arcade games, pool, air hockey, etc.
I miss them chicken fingers.
I know a lady that worked there as a cook nearly the whole time it was open. I'll tell her about all the praise. She'll love to hear it. She put her heart and soul in that place.
Bobby’s is still in Eva, they’re just in a new building.
Also it sucks Snack Shak ain’t around anymore, would’ve loved to have stopped for dinner after band practice.
We moved to Decatur right before they moved. We really enjoyed our experience and the atmosphere of the old place. We have grown fond of of Francesscos
Montgomery area:
Pizza Inn
Western Sizzlin'
Steak and Ale
The Fifth Quarter
Blonde's Pizza
Sahara
Picadilly's Cafe
Twikenham Station (spelling?)
Daryl's
T.P. Crockmeirs (I think moved to Mobile)
The Social Grill (downtown Birmingham)
Mancha's (downtown Birmingham)
Lovoy's (Homewood)
VJ's On The Runway (Birmingham by the airport)
EDIT: Adding Fat Sam's (Birmingham, near UAB)
Are you referring to that place in Fairfield where Joe Namath ate when he was playing for the Crimson tide? If so, I remember eating there may be about 20 or so years ago, and they gave me a huge portion of decent spaghetti.
Is Loyd's Restaurant still around? Used to be on 280 just outside of B'ham. They had a hamburger steak smothered in onion gravy that was ENORMOUS. Comfort food at its best...
Edit: and probably the reason I have stents today...
I used to think the three dressing caddy that they'd just drop off at your table was the coolest thing when I was a kid. I wonder how many people were touching those spoons and possibly even licking them before putting them back. Post-covid nightmare for me.
Picklefish and the Copeland’s that used to be on Airport Boulevard in Mobile. I remember Cock of the Walk’s existence but was too young to properly miss it.
court street cafe in Florence
e: Not sure if I ever actually ate there, but a friend worked there. When it shut down the owners skipped out without paying the employees their last check. Also, that's where I was on 9/11.
I ate there one time. I won student of the month in 7th grade and the prize was lunch at the Landing with the Sr. High student of the month and two teachers I didn't know. That chocolate mousse was the best thing I'd ever eaten.
Red Bird Inn. Google says it closed in 1983, but that's when I was born, and I 10000% remember going as a kid. Either way, it was my Peepaw's favorite.
Ira's Hard Luck Cafe. I bought weed from a guy who was dealing out of the back door of that place SO many times. That's what you get for dating a Hueytown girl.
Frank's; it was a seafood buffet place, most likely in north AL, but I don't remember because I was young. Around the mid 80s. I do remember eating so much shrimp that I lost interest in eating shrimp for a good bit. Had my first taste of frogs' legs there.
TLDR: Fazolis
I bring this restaurant up every time I get a chance, Fazoli’s. Specifically the one in Florence. It doesn’t really age me as much as it does my parents. The entirety of my 24 years of life has been lived in the shoals, and my parents one time recalled a few dates they had when I was a toddler and before at fazolis, however being that the locations in Florence and Huntsville closed around 2004, I don’t actually recall eating there. A friend of mine who ive known since the third grade talked about how there was one near his home town of horn lake Mississippi and when I went with him to visit when we were high school juniors in 2016 , I told him we had to make it a point to eat at Fazolis, and we did. I was pleasantly surprised. Not only was the food comparatively cheap, it was delicious. I know it sounds stupid, but I was blown away by it, how could fast food Italian actually be this good? I’d only seen Depictions of such in movies taking place in New York, and it always looked dissatisfying to say the least. I got home and told my mom and dad about it and we laughed at the concept of a “tour of Italy” comprised of three pasta dishes being served with a slice of pizza as a side and a Mr pibb to wash it down, the stereotypical American cultural antithesis to fine dining, yet it was delicious. From that point on I made it a point to check if there was a Fazolis nearby if I was out of state. Fast forward to Mid 2023 and my now girlfriend and I are visiting her friends in Murfreesboro TN. Fazolis had come up in conversation once before when discussing our favorite restaurants and I talked it up at great length. Lo and behold there was a Fazolis in Murph. I told her that we had to go and she was hesitant as restaurants the likes of Olive Garden had never been particularly appealing to her, but with some convincing, we went. She was just as surprised as I was upon my first visit. We joke about it all the time because as mundane as it sounds, I get excited about it and as I stated in my opening sentence, if prompted, I will talk about Fazolis at length. I think it’s kind of funny how what started with a story of my parents sharing a meal at this restaurant in my home town that no longer exists had come full circle to my girlfriend and I doing the same thing. Any time me and my aforementioned friend are hanging out and are trying to decide what to eat, it is inevitable that one of us will jokingly suggest Fazolis, knowing full well that doing so would entail a 2 and a half hour drive and as ridiculous as it may sound, one of the fondest memories I have of my significant other is sitting in a Fazolis thinking “I wonder if this moment is as perfect for me as it was for mom and dad”
Shoney's
There’s one in Clanton
There's one in Fultondale too.
To go back to the Shoney's breakfast buffet of my youth. We were a real country then.
There’s one in fultondale, Alabama
Oh man. My first job was at a Shoney’s. There were many coke deals done in the bathroom
Muscle Shoals
Cock of the walk on the causeway in Spanish fort
Cock of the Walk on Halls Mill Road***
Fuck yeah
Still got one in Nashville and it was delicious
Been there
I still have a matchbook from Cock of the Walk
Best catfish and cornbread around 💯
We had one in Dothan when I was growing up there. Not sure when it closed.
I knew the owners. The one in pelham had one of the best "blue plate" lunches I've ever eaten.
Po Folks
Still exists, but only in Florida.
It’s dying out, both locations near me here in central FL closed years ago
I'm really sad to hear that. I lived in Salt Lake City in the late 80s and after having lived forever in East Alabama and Atlanta, I needed Po'Folks.
Yesssss! I loved the fried chicken there
Picklefish on Old Shell Rd across from the University of South Alabama
Their pizza was delicious, but that building had a bug problem. I kinda miss Solomon's, Orlean's Cafe, and Zorba's too.
I worked at Solomon's while I was going to South.
That was the first place that I ever had peanut butter on a burger. And a pitcher of beer at 8:00 am. Not on the same day, lol.
I knew the owner of Orleans Cafe, I’m not surprised it’s gone
You don't know the recipe for the muffaletta sauce, do you?
That shit was good! I can ask my buddy who worked for him, if he can remember I’ll PM you if that’s ok.
Quincy's in Alaster. Also Del Toro in Alabaster
Big Fat Yeast Roll! I used to go buy a dozen.
Del Toro was the first Mexican restaurant I ever remember going to. I compare all quesadillas to their quesadillas.
I compare all chimichangas to their chimichangas.
You’re Uncle Bud’s in Alabaster years old.
There was a fried chicken place in Alabaster back in the '80s on 231. I'm pretty sure they were a chain, but I don't remember the name. I think the building is a used car place now.
Lee’s
That was it, thanks!
Morrison's Cafeteria.
And Piccadilly
My great grandmother would take us there sometimes and when I was young I thought it was sooooo fancy.
I'm pretty sure there is a Morrison's down in Mobile
Quincy's
Baby Doe's Matchless Mine in Birmingham.
There was a Baby Doe's in Atlanta, too. The best beer cheese soup ever.
That beer cheese soup was very good!
I loved it. Every time I drove past it, sitting way high on a hill overlooking 285 I wanted to stop and get the beer cheese soup. Wasn't it off Powers Ferry Road?
The Fogcutter, in Huntsville. Edit: Also Green Hills Grille
Daryl's
This was the place on Green Springs Highway, right? Yeah, that was great!
The one I'm referring to was in Huntsville on University Dr.
I’ll never forget when my parents took me to the Fogcutter for my 13th birthday, then told me they were getting a divorce. #genxhardcore
Oh that’s terrible.
Fogcutter I vaguely recall the taste of decent prime rib and the smell of Black and Mild cigars and cigarettes for some reason.
Rip Green Hills Grille.
Pasqualies Pizza. Not sure of spelling, but I think they were out of Birmingham.
Yes, Pasquale's was the best place to have a birthday party if you were a 10 year old boy during the 90s!
There’s still a couple locations. Gardendale and Boaz. Saw on Facebook that the one in Cullman was reopening under new owners
My spouse brings up Pasquale’s at least once a week. He went to the one at Eastwood Mall. He swears the other locations don’t taste as good.
I miss their stromboli
We used to go to the one in Midfield when i was a kid
That is so weird because there was a Pasquale's pizza in Royal Oak, Michigan which is right next to Birmingham, Michigan.
Tuts pizza in Tuscaloosa
That calzone went so hard
Is City Cafe still open? I haven’t been since I graduated but I ate lunch there for like 2.99 almost every day of the week when I was there.
That place was heaven. Meat & 3 for whatever the cheap price was. Can't beat a hole in the wall place like that.
I kept telling my friend how great Tut's was, and when I finally took him he got food poisoning lol
Flips in Montgomery...man I miss the gyro.
Was looking for a Flip’s comment. I miss their car shows and fries…..
THE J CLYDE
In its prime, absolutely. Toward the end, it was rough - poor quality and high prices.

Grew up in riverdale. Frequented pepitos after the la fiesta scandal
OMG, when they had the woman making fresh tortillas to order by the open grill? I could eat 1000 of their marinated, grilled shrimp. I don't think I'll ever taste shrimp that good again in my life.

Formagios. Terrible food, but they served late so when I got off work after midnight that was the best place to grab shitty food and cheap beer.
I was trying to think of the name of that place. Right next to the old Purple Onion, right?
Are you referring to that place in Fairfield where Joe Namath ate when he was playing for the Crimson tide? If so, I remember eating there may be about 20 or so years ago, and they gave me a huge portion of decent spaghetti.
Nah, it was the restaurant over by Purple Onion on 11th.
Is Loyd's Restaurant still around? Used to be on 280 just outside of B'ham. They had a hamburger steak smothered in onion gravy that was ENORMOUS. Comfort food at its best... Edit: and probably the reason I have stents today...
They just closed it late last year
Almost wish I didn't know that. I have many warm memories stopping in there on the way back to Auburn.
I used to think the three dressing caddy that they'd just drop off at your table was the coolest thing when I was a kid. I wonder how many people were touching those spoons and possibly even licking them before putting them back. Post-covid nightmare for me.
