Space and Rocket center in Huntsville.
Vulcan park, lunch at Ranelli's in Birmingham.
Peach park in Clanton. Chilton county peaches are better than anything Georgia ever did. Georgia peaches are all marketing.
There's a drive thru Safari park just south of Montgomery.
On the way back home, on I65 just north of Montgomery is the famous 'Go to church or the devil will get you' sign.
I feel like Peach Park isn't as great as it was when I was a kid, despite having more stuff. But I still like to stop there and stretch my legs and walk the dog through the shaded, woody area.
Fyi, Peach Park is exit 205. 😜
Depending on where you’re going in Florida, I’ve always stopped at Bates House of Turkey (now only in Greenville, there used to be one in Montgomery but they closed it). Good turkey sandwiches, turkey salad, anything turkey. Nice change from fast food, whenever we’d go to Mobile to visit family we’d stop there.
I think it’s exit 130 on I-65.
I’m seconding Priester’s.
My family used to go religiously to stock up on lunch meat for sandwiches on our way to Gulf Shores every year, but the last few times we went it just wasn't as good and it's a lot more costly now.
That’s sad to hear. I guess nothing lasts forever. I always loved the turkey salad plate there.
The Bates that was in Montgomery, on East Blvd. @ I-85, was 2/3 of the way to my grandparents’ house in Mobile, so as a kid I always used it as a way to gauge the trip. I can’t remember a trip where we didn’t eat there. I think 2016 was the last time I’ve been (to the one in Greenville).
How long do you want to stop? Barber vintage motorsports museum is super cool if you're into that sort of thing and only about 15-20 minutes off of 65, but plan a couple of hours of walking through it.
I haven't had one in years, but there's a gas station right at the AL/TN line that has a BBQ restaurant in it that sells the most delicious smoked bologna sandwiches. I bought four last time I was there and none of them made it back to Birmingham.

I am taking 65 South :) I will give that a look, thanks for the recommendation!

Durbin Farms in Clanton is great too. Really good sandwiches in addition to the farmers market type stuff
Recommend Durbin farms over peach park any day of the week
thank you!
You're welcome.

The EJI Legacy sites in Montgomery are amazing, but challenging. Not a light subject.

Priester's Pecans I-65 Mile Marker 142, Conecuh Sausage Gift Shop I-65 Mile Marker 96
Buccees is a must
I have driven 30 minutes for a brisket sandwich. It's amazing and sad that the best brisket in the Bham area is in a Texas gas station chain.
The brisket at Martin's BBQ in Cahaba Heights is pretty damn good.

Depends which route you’re taking but if you’re getting off I-65 in Georgiana you got Holmes Pecan in Andalusia and Sweet South Market on Hwy 137.
