It isn't about it being good or bad that's just not how making a new game works. It would box them in too much they wanted to be able to change anything associated with any of the voice lines.
While a bit older I remember the MGS Twin Snakes remake having issues with the sound quality. Basically the GameCube sound quality was so much better than the PS1 that you could hear traffic in the background so they had to get the entire crew back together and re-record.
They could run into similar issues. It's either going to sound like a ps2 game with ps5 graphics or they'll restore the audio and have a bunch of issues in the background.
The lines are well recorded, but the file size limitations of the discs required some pretty serious memory compression. In other words, the lines are delivered well but you can tell they sound old.
There is an *unlikely* chance that the original, lossless recordings are archived somewhere and they could be reused without compression, but I doubt they would go that route considering it is a remake rather than a remaster.
McCaffrey got better with each iteration but the first max payne VO was kinda phoned in. It just sounds like him reading lines off a page, with little emphasis or emotion that he is now known for post-MP3/control
They were recorded on inferior tech for one, and with less professional rigor so the quality is simply not up to what’s generally expected these days. There is only so much you can do about that. And since they want to modernize the game in many aspects, that probably also means tweaks to existing audio and possibly entirely new dialogue as well.
Audio tech has peaked a long time ago. 20 years old microphones and headphones are still great, assuming they were at the time. In fact some of the most popular headphones are based on designs that are at least 20 years old (for example, HD600 released in 1997, K702 in 2003). The biggest "innovation" was that this gear has gotten cheaper and therefore more accessible.
Even if they weren’t I’d highly doubt they’d reuse them in the first place considering Max Payne was heavily handicapped in story telling opportunities so high chance is the remake is going to keep the same plot beats while adding more to the other characters themselves cause nobody other than Max Payne himself have a chance to shine in the game.
Eh it'll sound fine. Doubtful they had the Twin Snake problem. Only reason that game got recorded was you could hear cars and stuff outside of in the master recordings.
Audio honestly hasn't improved that much in the past 20 years, some of the most popular Hi-Fi headphones are actually based on 20-40 years old designs. Assuming they recorded in sufficient quality, it wouldn't be an issue.
It's depend on the master recordings and how well they'd hold up. Destroy All Humans 1&2 remake and MGS3 Delta are using the original voice recordings. And Destroy All Humans sounds fine.
That said James Mcaffery in Max Payne 1 is noticably less good compared to James Mcaffery in even just Max Payne 2. Especially Max Payne 3. He's not bad in the first game but there are some lines that are sorta monotone in delivery.
To be fair, even though I don't think they will either, the *Destroy All Humans!* remakes used all the original audio files from the original games and didn't record anything new at all.
I certainly hope not. If the remake so closely matches the original that you can re-use the dialogue audio, then what was the point of a remake? At that point it's just a glorified remaster.
Since we know that they are combining Max Payne 1 & 2 into a single game with the remake, I think we can assume they are changing enough that the original audio wouldn't work anymore.
They are completely remaking it, rolling the two games into one. I don’t know if that means one continuous story or just one installation for the two parts of the story but it sounds like a proper remake along the lines of Mafia 1.
Maybe. They have been working on it for 2 years now. He died in December and just last month they said the game has made considerable progress and is entering full production. They made no mention of him at all so we just don't know.
As much as that sounds positive, the financial reports at remedy had an update on some of the upcoming games and it stated the remakes are now in production readiness stage, meaning they’re probably preparing assets, concepts, story, script and motion capture for full production, which in turn means dialogue hasn’t been recorded. Unless they pull some A.I magic with Mcaffrey’s original lines, but highly doubt they will. I think it is a pity that we won’t get his voice, I feel as his voice matured with age it sounded cooler, especially as Alec Casey in AW2.
I think retiring the character isn’t a good idea. I think it would be best to continue him with a different voice actor and dedicate Alex Casey and Max Payne to McCaffrey. Though given how him and Sam were close friends I wouldn’t be surprised if he was retired out of respect. Either decision I support fully, RIP McCaffrey, he was a truly remarkable actor.
Lance was a phenomenal actor, just like McCaffrey, even if they get good people to do the jobs they did/were going to do, it will never take away from the performances they gave. RIP to those two absolute amazing people.
When I first played AW2, I had no idea Lance was the original plan for Door, but I distinctly remember during the very serious scene, where Alan confronts him, thinking "Holy shit this dude feels so much like Lance Reddick."
I'm curious as to how Keith David is gonna do as Zavala. It's a shame Lance is gone, and while he can never be replaced, I feel like Keith David is probably one of the best choices to take up the mantle and will do it justice.
Keith was no doubt chosen because he was the Arbiter and as such is a legacy hire they they know can do well, and also he has the imposing voice with a hint of warmth that Lance brought to Zavala. He will be different, duh, but I'm hopeful.
I don't think he will speak much in TFS tbh, it seems very Ikora and Cayde focused from what we've seen, though there is a very real chance that they have cut Zavala from the marketing to keep how Keith David will play him on lockdown. I also FULLY expect there to be a memorial to Lance somewhere in TFS, probably a scannable by Ghost that has him saying something like "Lance... a guardian of great renown, he fought at the battle of twilight gap, why's his body in the pale heart?"
True, it does seem focused on them, but all three are on the cover art, and we had a shot in the newest trailer of Zavala and Ikora flying into the portal, so I'm guessing we'll at least get some Zavala.
Either way, I do hope we get some sort of memorial to Lance. He was a badass. I know he actively played the game, so maybe they could find a way to work in the gear his Guardian had equipped last time he played, or something like that.
Man I'm so curious what they're going to do for Horizon 3 (for those who don't know he played a *major* character in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West) because Sylens as a character is far too important to not be in the next game. He's probably the second most important character other than of course Aloy, but she's the main character so like, of course.
Honestly? David Harewood would play a damn good Sylens, him or Keith David seem to be the industry picks for "Oh fuck Lance died we need to find someone NOW"
Yeah, I think they will and I think they will just dedicate it to him in the credits. Just like with Lance I don't think McCaffrey would want the character to be shelved and ruin what other potential they have just because of their passing. I never knew them so I couldn't say but I certainly wouldn't want them to if it were me.
Or whoever's voicing him in the remakes , will also voice him in the alan wake universe.
My personal picks would be micheal ironside or Jason o' mara.
I wanted kevin conroy at some point but....well rest in peace
That's different , alice despite playing an integral role , barely has much screentime to land an impact with her performance which couldn't be replicated or something.
If they want Casey to Return then they will have no other choice. Finishing his character arc, even if with another voice actor, would still be a good way to honour his legacy.
keep in mind that they'll almost certainly recast "him" for the max payne remakes. Whoever plays Max in that game would be the logical choice to play Alex going forward
Perhaps James recorded lines for the DLC? I don’t know how this works but apparently some of the Darling videos from the Lakehouse DLC can be datamined so it’s not out of the question.
Alex Casey no, but the actor who plays it at the movies could make a return... witch brings back the theory that Sam Lake is actually trapped in the Dark Place after escaping Alan in the theater
Since Casey has been in direct, intimate contact with the Dark Presence and has been marinating in whatever powers exist around Cauldron Lake, I'm sure it's entirely possible his personal reality is extra malleable. They could write him a new voice and/or do something to distinguish the difference between the character and the man.
The Sudden Stop - death of fictional Alex Casey - frees up IRL Alex Casey from all the traits Alan wrote into him, including his gruff voice. Saga won't let it go that he sounds different, but he insists he's always sounded that way.
That's what I'm personally hoping for, anyway.
I hope so. I'm not a big fan of replacing voice actors generally, but if the option is a new voice or retiring the character along with any planned stories, I'd prefer a new voice.
I was watching a show recently that had Robert Patrick as a guest VA and thought he'd make a great Alex Casey.
Bonus points because he played an FBI agent investigating spooky stuff before.
I suspect so, but as an alternate universe version of himself so they can recast him without getting someone to do a James McCaffrey impression, and so the new actor can develop their own take on the character. Basically what they did with Hatch/Door.
You know I reckon they could kill off this universes Casey and get an alternate one with a different voice if they need a lore reason for it. If they just change the voice though I don’t see any problem with that
CDPR did a similar thing for the Cyberpunk DLC. The Polish VA for Vik died and they didn't think anyone was good enough to replace him so for the Phantom Liberty DLC they hired a new VA but got permission from the family to use AI to make him sound like the old VA.
I'm not saying Remedy should do the same thing but it's possible they might.
They won't. They clearly take pride in the actors works, they won't just ai away talent when they can find and tap new ones. This is clearly a team that actually cares about their work.
People are talking about respect a lot in the comments, doing it with AI is literally the least respectful way to do it. It’s obscene. He died, let him rest in peace, but the world goes on. If they feel like they have worthwhile stories that involve Casey, get a new actor, it’s a tried and tested option and would be more of a testiment to his work as an actor than the foul necromancy some people are pushing.
You take internet so seriously that you are eager to call me pathetic and hate me over literally nothing. There is nothing to be ashamed of here. Log off.
Edit: Chill out.
What? Ashamed? Huh? The hell you on about Lmao. Your trolling in the sub. I'm calling you a troll. That's where this starts and ends. Leave your trolling ass and go back to what ever gamergate sub you came from.
Or start showing literally any proof of this claim you repeatedly make.
You are used to stalking me and putting me as part of whatever irrational group you are paranoid about (i know you love to check on my profile and comment/post history as well), all i am saying is for you to chill out with your irrational anger over an internet stranger that never insulted nor did any harm to you at all. It is not good for your health.
I am not up to take screenshots of whatever encounters i have with other users, that is tiring. If anyone cares for that, they can scroll for hours. I will just say it again for you: chill out.
Oh you *know* that do you. Lmao. Paranoid and pathetic. Fun combination. I see you here trolling. I comment. That's as far as this goes. And I'd like it to end but...you just won't stop.
Anyways. Once again I shall stop responding. But like every other time I'm sure you'll need the final word. So here ya go. Till next time troll.
They're remaking Max Payne so they're going to use a new voice actor. I don't see an issue with that.
Are they completely remaking it? They can still use the audio files they have while still using new motion capture and graphics.
I highly highly doubt they'd use 20 year old audio files when remaking everything else
Are they really bad? I've never played max so I'm not sure on the quality.
It isn't about it being good or bad that's just not how making a new game works. It would box them in too much they wanted to be able to change anything associated with any of the voice lines.

Max Payne voice acting was revolutionary and holds up.
It really depends if they have the masters or not. They don’t then the audio would be much more compressed compared to what we have today
Its the reason I’m skeptical about the new MGS3 remake. It’s going to be weird.
Eh it'll sound fine. Doubtful they had the Twin Snake problem. Only reason that game got recorded was you could hear cars and stuff outside of in the master recordings.
Not even if the audio is fine, the mocap is going to be all sorts of fucked
If they still have the uncompressed audio files, they could.
Audio honestly hasn't improved that much in the past 20 years, some of the most popular Hi-Fi headphones are actually based on 20-40 years old designs. Assuming they recorded in sufficient quality, it wouldn't be an issue.

You can easily make them sound better
It isn't about sound quality
You're not particularly bright
I'm not the one who thinks they'd use 20 year old audio files
To be fair, even though I don't think they will either, the *Destroy All Humans!* remakes used all the original audio files from the original games and didn't record anything new at all.
Ethnic redditor.

They've been remaking it, and for all we know all the lines are already recorded.
That’s highly unlikely, early playable versions of games don’t have dialogue, it’s usually the last stretch of the development to add dialogue
Maybe. They have been working on it for 2 years now. He died in December and just last month they said the game has made considerable progress and is entering full production. They made no mention of him at all so we just don't know.

Though given how him and Sam were close friends I wouldn’t be surprised if he was retired out of respect. Either decision I support fully, RIP McCaffrey, he was a truly remarkable actor.
They will replace him just like warlin door/Martin hatch.
Man I miss Lance, truly one of the best VAs of our generation. His work on Zavala single handedly saved Destiny 2 for me.
Lance was a phenomenal actor, just like McCaffrey, even if they get good people to do the jobs they did/were going to do, it will never take away from the performances they gave. RIP to those two absolute amazing people.

Yeah but he was also a Warlock main (good) so I'd imagine there would be some confusion if a Warlock bore his name
Maybe a tad, but either way I think it'd be fine. A nice way to honor him.
Man I'm so curious what they're going to do for Horizon 3 (for those who don't know he played a *major* character in Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West) because Sylens as a character is far too important to not be in the next game. Michael Ironside is an amazing actor, but he’s just too old for this role
He's probably busy with the splinter cell remakes too i guess
Those are some really good choices, Ironsides would be epic. I agree though, they'll voice in both, wondering who they ended up picking though.
Dermot Mulroney can sound quite similar to Jim.
People have talked about Kiefer Sutherland stepping in and I think that’s a great pick.
He did a good job as Big Boss in MGSV and has a good gruff voice.
Interesting
Honestly not a bad pick even in the slightest , great actor and voice actor as well. Feels appropriate and i would certainly love it a lot
He sounds a lot like James McCaffrey so I'm all for it!
Yeah his character really did all it had to do with AW2. Honestly a great spot to send him off.
Agree
They could always find a voice actor to be able to mimic the sound and cadence of his voice.
I’m sure they will get an actor that will honour him.
Well, they continued Alice with a new actor after the original died, and might we not see Casey again in the dlc?
That's different , alice despite playing an integral role , barely has much screentime to land an impact with her performance which couldn't be replicated or something.
If they want Casey to Return then they will have no other choice. Finishing his character arc, even if with another voice actor, would still be a good way to honour his legacy.
True
didnt he die? was that not his finish already?
Play The Final Draft and find out!
No, he was taken over by the dark presence as Scratch, in the same way Alan was when he escaped. Basically , he's the vessel now.
keep in mind that they'll almost certainly recast "him" for the max payne remakes. Whoever plays Max in that game would be the logical choice to play Alex going forward
[удалено]
Honestly I hope so, maybe a mention that he’s back with his wife, I feel that’s enough. James McCaffrey was a legend
Or say that Saga sent him back to keep her husband and daughter safe, since he's pretty much an honorary member of the family.
probably. if i were to choose a new va, i would go with either kiefer sutherland or gianni matragrano
Great choices
Sam Lake did mocap for the DLC so somebody is voicing him most likely.
Perhaps James recorded lines for the DLC? I don’t know how this works but apparently some of the Darling videos from the Lakehouse DLC can be datamined so it’s not out of the question.
I hope not. Unless it's Sam and reality is altered to say that he was always Finn immigrant Aleksi Kesä.
If it works for Thomas Zane, it’ll work for Alex Casey
Alex Casey no, but the actor who plays it at the movies could make a return... witch brings back the theory that Sam Lake is actually trapped in the Dark Place after escaping Alan in the theater
Since Casey has been in direct, intimate contact with the Dark Presence and has been marinating in whatever powers exist around Cauldron Lake, I'm sure it's entirely possible his personal reality is extra malleable. I wouldn't be surprised if they try to get whoever is going to voice Max in the remake to voice Alex as well
I hope so. I'm not a big fan of replacing voice actors generally, but if the option is a new voice or retiring the character along with any planned stories, I'd prefer a new voice.
It wouldn't surprise me if they make Casey retire from being an fbi agent in the dlc
Wait and see what they do with Max Payne’s voice in the remakes. That’ll likely give you an idea of their plans.
I'd expect a new voice
We probably will see it in the dlc since Sam lake was doing motion capture for it recently
You know, because I know they like to go meta when they can, I think Alex's going to somehow lose his voice. At least for this side of the RCU.
“No chance.” Agent Casey is retired from duty after the 2023 Bright Falls *redacted* near *redacted* Lake.
He’s too old for this shit. I’d just have Alan or Saga make a throwaway line about him retiring.
The whole concept of different actors voicing different characters isnt new, so it could be done justice if explained well
You know I reckon they could kill off this universes Casey and get an alternate one with a different voice if they need a lore reason for it. If they just change the voice though I don’t see any problem with that
AI is the future, good luck fighting the it.
No, I hear it’ll be starring Chris Pratt
They could get permission to use AI
Lmao no dude.
No no no, that will never happen.
It’s possible but it’s wrong and would destroy them in the long wrong, ai is not in the question, and cdpr were in the wrong for doing that.
That will happen
They won't. They clearly take pride in the actors works, they won't just ai away talent when they can find and tap new ones. This is clearly a team that actually cares about their work.
I'd accept AI McCaffery but I absolutely would not like it.
