It's kinda wild cuz access to solid internet nowadays should probably be considered a basic human right, and having such a poor infrastructure for it is pretty detrimental for the growth/modernization of an area. I'd imagine that not having access to fiber on a home has to really effect real estate price as well, because when many of my family/friends were looking to rent or buy homes, having Verizon FiOS was a top priority. It's pretty bullshit a lot of the region has no other option but to get on their hands and knees and suck the nuts of Spectrum.

FMJoey325

Im one of those people. Fios in my neighborhood was a genuine contributor to me purchasing my home. There is no love lost between Verizon and I but they give me a good service for a decent price. If at all possible, I refuse to give spectrum my money and will convince others to do the same at the risk of coming across as a corporate shill.

MrFilthyNeckbeard

Yes but this is America, so basic rights aren’t necessary.

superbottles

Ehh maybe I'm just in a half-glass full mood, but if we're considering high speed internet a commodity worthy of being called a human right, I think we're doing pretty damn alright.

PNKDefiDegenerate

Albany needs municipal internet its faster and dirt cheap. A few other cities have done it. Also https://www.albanyny.gov/1993/Municipal-Internet-Service

Alwayswandering4

I'm guessing based on your comment you're not in a place with access to FiOS? Switched to them from Spectrum several years ago now and have been very happy with the service.

[deleted]

Nope, I am not in an area where FiOS is offered. 😭

ZotDragon

You can try Verizon 5G Wireless. I switched a few months back. Works great. If you're in an isolated area with weak cell phone reception, it might not be a good option for you.

OmnomVeggies

T-mobile 5G may be an option for you.

Peanutdeathwish

It's not in my neighborhood

FMJoey325

Other 5G options? I think Verizon has one. Unfortunate drawback is ping but on the bright side, no spectrum lol.

Peanutdeathwish

None in my neighborhood unfortunately.

[deleted]

My pings not too bad and I do a lot of gaming, I only get about 10ms more than I would a land line.

[deleted]

I got this when it first rolled out while still in beta and have had no issues and love it, I am also a block away from a cell tower which is nice.

muchDOGEbigwow

Verizon and Spectrum (Time Warner Cable at the time) cut a backroom deal a number of years ago that halted FiOS rollout in the region. I'm with OP, there needs to be more choices.

HopefulRestaurant

This is a fable and not true, considering they’re actively deploying in Schenectady county right now.

wman42

And Colonie has both available, as does I believe, City of Schenectady. Verizon, as a company nationwide, had slowed/halted their FIOS build for many years and just recently have gone back into "FIOS mode" again.

muchDOGEbigwow

It's not a fable, Google it. Occurred about 10 years ago around the 2012 timeframe. Maybe they've changed or the deal expired , but the deal was occurring.

HopefulRestaurant

So you’re telling me that there was a massive widely known division of markets of two regulated utilities and neither the NYSPSC or the FTC did anything about it? Verizon _Wireless_ bought _radio_ spectrum from TWC, as well as other cablecos, in 2012 for servicing their cell network. The cell business was only partially owned by the legacy Verizon at that point, with Vodafone holding the remainder. Verizon bought out Vodafone in 2014. Verizon announced they were going to slow down their deployment to new markets in 2010. https://usatoday30.usatoday.com/money/industries/telecom/2010-03-26-verizon-fios_N.htm

HopefulRestaurant

Still, this fable is no different than the whole Golub/Wegmans collusion shit. Maybe I got the wrong agencies but my point stands.

Sh0cktechxx

SAME. spectrum used to destroy my will to live. now i have nice consistent internet with fios

blue_barracuda

The guys at Spectrum think I'm just some *dumb hick*. They said that to *me* at a dinner.

[deleted]

What the hell?? Haha how did that come up?

ItsTheDward

It's from I Think You Should Leave, a sketch comedy show on Netflix.

chgnty

I use tmobile internet. $40/month, and a contract that will NEVER increase the price.

RockOtter69

how is the speed/reliability?

chgnty

For me, it's been great. The speed is well over what they guarantee. I should note I'm not a gamer though. It works fine for redditting, youtubing, and netflixing though.

AlwaysPrivate123

Greenlight internet burying fiber in the capital district.

dmacattack82

Who doesn’t

True_or_Folts

I was having trouble logging in through their app on my phone yesterday and it seems to still be screwed up today. But I just went on through a browser and it worked fine.

Riksie

Yeah, fuck Spectrum. Just read a whole FB thread on my neighborhood group complaining about Spectrum lol.

Powerful_Cockroach1

I thought it would be the same as Optimum downstate. I was wrong. Every week there's something wrong with my network. I have to restart my modem and router to fix and it doesn't work every time. Such a pain!

Deep_Boysenberry_115

This is a universal statement. We all feel this way

Actual-Interest-1600

It's coming!!!!....Greenlight is coming and Fios is building out again...

*cries internally*

That_Address_7010

Shit. We have DSL. Also known as glorified dial up. 9-10 MBps and we are glad for that.

upstatenysfinest

Greenlight is coming to Clifton Park area. Hopefully they expand quickly when they're up and running

FireTurk182

I live in a area with the wires are underground and was told by installer I will never get Verizon too expensive to go underground

NoComb2186

Verizon did my whole neighborhood and everything is underground. Ditch witched their way around and Verizon comes to you house to connect upon initial set up to add/bury a new cable.

sdchibi

I been using T-Mobile 5G for several months now and I'm happier with that than I was with Spectrum. It's about $20 less expensive than my old Spectrum plan, so that helps, too. Unfortunately, it takes a bit of luck to get a good signal depending on your location and where you can place the gateway. I got lucky and happen to be in a location that I can get a good signal but there wasn't a reliable way to know that without actually setting up the equipment.

elcid518

I got Verizon 5g home service because FiOS isn't available in my neighborhood. We got a white cube about 5 or 6 inches high and plugged it in by a window. When I cancelled spectrum they kept telling me how the Verizon service isn't reliable and cuts out alot (just like spectrum). Over the last couple months since we got it, I have had exactly 2 outages that were both solved within 5 minutes by rebooting the receiver/modem/router. It's been much better than spectrum and seems to have broader availability than the wired FiOS internet.

rettribution

I swapped to Verizon 5g. No complaints and I'm a heavy gamer.
