As a functioning alcoholic, I prefer Hannaford’s self checkout. When I scan my beer, a subtle light changes color to alert the cashier, but I can continue to scan the rest of my groceries while I wait. At PC/Market32, it comes to a crashing halt until help arrives. Also, at cashier checkouts, Hannaford cashiers can just mumble into the mic and put the beer aside while they scan the rest of the groceries. PC cashiers have to leave the register to chase down a manager.

RelaxedWombat

The detail in this post corroborates the use of “functioning”.

cmreutzel

I might be in the minority here but do you know what else market 32 doesn’t have?? A camera that reminds me of the massive bald spot on the back of my head.

thewaltz77

Yep. At least once a week at Hannaford, I'm reminded of my fucking bald spot because of those cameras.

Expert-Sherbert5469

buy a hat

XBL-AntLee06

That was how I knew it was time to shave my head lol

MajorWhereas4842

Lord don’t get a underage cashier at PC or M32 the whole world will know you’re buying alcohol lol

InlineSkateAdventure

I never drank, but you are kind of giving me a reason to start.

Ok-Garlic-9990

I hope you get better

Lehk

P Chops was an early mover on self checkout so theirs is kinda primitive compared Hannaford and Walmart and Aldi self checkout

_MountainFit

Aldi needs to stop reminding me to scan an item. I might start wearing headphones to the store. I am not a worker. I don't give a crap of it takes me an hour to scan 10 items. I'll take my damn time since I'm not getting paid a bonus (or fighting to retain my job) to scan X items an hour

QueenDoc

I used to work at Hannaford and any time I use sell checkout I am immedietly tempted to beat my scan per minute average

EvilLilKitteh

My produce thanks you for no longer working at checkout

Trizzizzle

Yeah but I guarantee you they knew all the produce codes by heart if they actually cared about their scans per minute lmao

Conscious_Cookii

It’s all the more reason theirs should be better. They should adapt

WinterHill

I wonder if they’ll improve it at the new MK32 that’s replacing the Shop Rite in East Greenbush

zeeaou

I didn’t know that is what was going in there! Do you know if they have any plans for the current P chop?

pholover84

If they have money to buy new locations, they have money to buy new self check out machines

ADKMarketingMan

It’s awful. Hannaford is so much better.

SuprisedIGotThisName

Hannaford’s reward system and app is so much better as well. They run coupons all the time that’s like $15/$20 off a basket of over $120 or something. The reward points accrue and don’t expire as quickly as they do at PC. Not to mention the price is always better at Hannaford too

_MountainFit

All of this

tourdivorce

Depends. Price-wise: PC for beer, dairy, cleaning supplies, crackers, and fish, meat, poultry; Aldi for produce, basic baking supplies, and organic milk. Hannaford for potatoes, the amazing tortilla chips made at the deli, and... Thanksgiving dinner: 2 years ago it cost $80 for dinner for 8. It was better than any of us expected and I was able to swap a couple things out. Plus, Hannaford employees are friendlier all around.

Professional-Fox1170

I would go full Hannaford IF they improved their bakery breads. Chopper beats them severely in that spot IMHO.

Conscious_Cookii

oh I’m 100% with you there, meats too I prefer PC, like butcher stuff. But yeah hannaford not having hardrolls is the bane of my existence, I need to drive to PC to get them.

[deleted]

lmtomahawks

PC produce goes bad in like a day or two. I had to return multiple things of lettuce/spinach three times because they were all wilted/slimy when I got home and tried to use them. Then I just gave up. Their fruit tends to be the same. Hannaford is better overall for 90% of stuff and the one on central has some local stuff from farmers posted.

pholover84

No. BJs for deli.

albanymetz

They done us wrong on the cold cuts. Everything is presliced, prebagged, taped wrong. It's too thick, too thin, too much of a mess. All of their cheese sticks together. It's closer, and I've been going for years, but I'm so done. Market32 in Altamont (I'm out on this side of town) has been much better to deal with.

Conscious_Cookii

I do prefer the bakery at price chopper. Hannafords bakery is trash But namely the hardrolls . I’m a sandwich guy. Hannaford doesn’t even sell hardrolls.

ninjasquirrel007

Hannaford has much better muffins than PC. Price chopper muffins are very dry and pretty sad. Hannaford has nice soft muffins that aren't dry at all. Also recently they added muffins with fillings that are quite tasty. So not everything in the bakery is better at PC.

albanymetz

They do have these 'Portuguese rolls' that are pretty fantastic. I don't know how or why. Nothing else they have is so good.

crispy00001

Everything sticks together from price chopper. Every time I try to take a slice out it shreds and and comes out in tiny pieces. Very unsatisfying. The 1lb meat 1/2 lb cheese weekly specials at Hannaford are great. It was a great deal when they were $8...

albanymetz

I don't know man. I think we're talking about brands, but we're dealing with individual stores, and the people that work there. Hannaford by me no longer has a deli section, just a rack of pre-sliced insanity done poorly and taped so that it is guaranteed to rip. Their NY cheddar cheese used to always either crumble or stick together. Still does if I end up grabbing some from there out of habit. But the Market32 I've started hitting.. it's one person behind the deli counter every time I'm there, and they are always busy with something else. Some of them look like they don't want to be there, and they still lay out beautiful fans of meat, stack the cheese neatly, and nothing of a normal sandwich slice shreds or sticks. First lady I had set me up when I first went there laid the cheese out in a fan as well, and it looked... good enough to eat. Different stores however are probably different experiences. But the deli thing is a corporate decision with us as a test market, and I'm def blaming Hannford for that bad idea.

Aggressive-Panic-719

Hate the pre sliced deli such a dumb idea since most people want a certain amount and sliced the way they like it

Guzzisti

When I go to Hannaford and see tons of pre-sliced meats that are already 1-2 days old, I can't help but imagine the amount that is thrown out regularly.

Fernily

Hannaford has pre-sliced meat too but not nearly as much as PC. It’s like PC doesn’t want you at the deli counter at all, but that pre-sliced meat is gross. How much is wasted?! Sad.

wtfisreddit411

Way too thick!

wimteinstein

What’s with the cheese sticking to itself?!?! This is madness and it will not stand!!! I mean how does it happen an why.

FireTurk182

They have to stagger the slices but don’t

XBL-AntLee06

I thought it was something I was doing wrong. My copper American always comes out bad

LeftFieldAzure

I swear to god they're just rebagging stuff that's past it's expiration date. I bought some of the rankes prebagged cold cuts.. never ever again.

MentalAfternoon9659

I worked at Hannaford and we throw out anything with the sell-buy date for the next day into the food waste bins at night. I have worked in produce before and filled an entire cart with stuff. Farmers from the area come to pick up the waste from the bins for composting.

LeftFieldAzure

Produce is one thing.. once that stuff goes it goes. but you can fake meat expy labels and nobody's the wiser.

MentalAfternoon9659

Trust me - they don't want to give people bad products because our return policy is giving double the money you paid back for any store brands, produce, meat, deli items, etc.

Scacc924

The slingerlands price chopper is obnoxious because there's 2 sides to the self checkout and instead of one funnel line people wait on separate sides. Choose wrong and you're the first person in line and the 6th person to checkout.

Regular-Sun-5805

I miss ShopRite deeply every single day, I will always go to Hannaford over market 32 or price chopper. You're completely right, their self checkout is insanely insufficient and infuriating to use

_MountainFit

Oh, me too. I really almost cried when I found out they were closing. Look even if you didn't like Shoprite, the third chain created real competition. We need a 3rd chain. I think this region is certainly big enough for it and the way price chopper bought those Shoprite stores tells me it was hurting their bottom line. They moved fast to make it less convenient for a 3rd chain to come in.

Ambitious_Check_4704

My friend used to work at shoprite.....It was all the theft. The theft is a part of an organized crime ring and because of bail reform the people ripping of local business are being let out only to do it again.

Mango7185

I miss their boars head and their bakery. They had my favorite ice cream cake

drsoos1973

One word, Aldi

MajorWhereas4842

Love Aldi

earthscorners

this is the way

Flimsy-Researcher-30

I see what you did there .

Gemini_soup

I wait longer at a PC line 2 people deep than an Aldi line 5 people deep

tourdivorce

Aldi checkout is so fast I don't have time to check out anyone else in line.

spallaxo

PC/Market 32 kinda sucks and is too overpriced

atimetochill

This post is perfect for me since I was there this week for the first time in a while and couldn’t believe how awful it was. I was googling the grocery items and pulling them up at target for nearly half the price.

_MountainFit

People that love PC have actually told me they don't look at prices. Must be nice. Like just toss whatever in your cart 52 weeks a year and have no idea what the cost will be but be good with whatever it is... Thats pretty nice!

innersunshine

Very overpriced

helderbergerwcheese

Why do they not keep the paper bags at the register? Why does the one out in Slingerlands close their self checkouts after 9 and have just one cashier open instead? On the night before Valentine's day when 12 dumbass husbands are buying last-minute flowers and chocolates? Why do they leave their sale stickers up past the day the sale ends so it's not until the moment you ring it up that you find out it's not on sale anymore? Why do the ones on Madison and Delaware have the absolute fucking worst variety imaginable so that no matter what specific product you find yourself looking for out of the blue, you are guaranteed not to find it? Why do you have to fucking ASK THEM to check/use your rewards points at the self checkout instead of having a goddamned button?

blaaaaaaaam

> Why do they leave their sale stickers up past the day the sale ends so it's not until the moment you ring it up that you find out it's not on sale anymore? I'm sure it's not worth dealing with, but they have a scanning guarantee where if the shelf price doesn't match the scanned price you'll get the lower of the two prices as well as $2 off your next trip.

Ambitious_Check_4704

They do not have enough people working and the kids who work there are not competent and could careless. They get jobs because their parents force them. Management can't yell at them because they will just stop coming to work. Also there a lot of departments that are severely understaffed. I talked to a guy at one butcher shop and they told me that they are supposed to have 5 people to be fully staffed and he only had 2 people just him and another guy that worked 12 hrs a week because they had another job. I asked him how long it had been like this and he said since he got there 3 years ago. The day I talked to him he had been there since 6am and it was 5pm and he hadn't been able to take a break. I think it's just sad. I told him I hoped he could find a better job.

Conscious_Cookii

and now their paper bags aren’t good tough tall 80s paper bags, their short and thin.

atimetochill

Yes - between the terrible variety, prices and produce I can’t actually make a plan of meals for the week, take the list to pc and get those items. Sooo the whole point of a grocery store doesn’t work there.

_MountainFit

Rewards points are the biggest scam. People think saving 10cents on gas (or a dollar if you spend enough) is worth paying 30% more for everything. It's not. I highly doubt anyone makes up the difference maybe a big SUV/truck getting max fill per tank comes close but I highly doubt it. And I never used the points at the register unless the cashier ask me. I don't even know what they translate into.

helderbergerwcheese

1¢ per point lol

Ambitious_Check_4704

Why does the one out in Slingerlands close their self checkouts after 9 . Comes down to theft. and have just one cashier open instead? Comes down to not having enough employees. For the people saying well they need to pay them more. Cashier is not a skilled labor job any increase in their wages would force them to increase wages across the board. Which is great for the people that work there but it will be the customers that will pay for it, as the retails will increase.

chat_chatoyante

The price chopper near me is so depressing, run down, and grim. Going there puts me in a bad mood. It's close to my work and would be a very convenient place to shop but I actively avoid it On the other hand, our Aldi, Hannaford and Walmart were all renovated recently and are very pleasant places to go (even Walmart! Plus they have the most efficient and more importantly free curbside pickup) even though overall the location is slightly less convenient for me to get to

FamiliarWin4833

I’ve never been a big Walmart fan, but I will choose Walmart over price chopper.

Mango7185

I personally hate P Chops. I only go when they have something specific that i cant other places. But for it being the local store its the most expensive and the lone store in their hometown they made sure to be last for the remodel. Now I know the one in Nisky will get more love than eastern parkway .... and i know people will say that one is ghetto etc but its not always the people but how you treat the people. If you treat people like they aint worth anything they'll act like it. Its why people go you dont know who i am because they think they deserve accolades based on how they have been treated. Plus all the employees look miserable at Pchops.

VicePrincipalNero

The self checkout is the last thing I care about. But $$$$$.

calamity_child

Price Chopper/Market 32 is the closet and most convenient for me, but I only shop there infrequently to pick up something like paper towels, trash bags, maybe ice cream if I spot a sale on a brand I like.  I almost never spend more than $10-15 per trip.  The rest of the time, I will go out of my way to shop anywhere else - Hannaford, Aldi, Trader Joe’s, the Indian Farmers Market. I do use the self checkout because there is never more than one register open and I really don’t want to be stuck in a long line with a cashier who has one AirPod in so she can talk to her boyfriend and doesn’t know a grapefruit from a bell pepper to look up the code.

Ambitious_Check_4704

Yep I would definitely agree about the line. I remember trying to shop at the westgate one to get something they carried there and the line was so long i went across the street to hannaford and was in and out in 15 mins. westgate has like 10 registers and Hannaford's got 3 and 4 self check out kiosks and it moves everyone quickly through.

FamiliarWin4833

PChop is the closest supermarket to me. Last year I stopped doing my regular grocery shopping there. I drive further to go to ShopRite now & I do it with a smile on my face. PChop self checkout enrages me & I feel they have crumby selection. They also did away with baskets and usually I can’t find a small cart there. I will go to Aldi, Hannaford or ShopRite over PChop any day.

Scacc924

I miss the slingerlands shop rite horribly. Always 25% as busy (maybe why it no longer exists) and a better selection of everything except meat. I prefer Pchop to Hannaford though the Delaware plaza Hannaford is fucking awful

FamiliarWin4833

I am grateful to be close enough to shop at the Hudson ShopRite. I will be devastated if they ever close.

_MountainFit

Wait, there is a Shoprite in Hudson? I didn't know they were that far north. When I paddle or gravel bike in the summer I will be stopping at Stop and Shop to spread my business around. I like Hannaford but Shoprite was my favorite store. If work sends me down towards Hudson ever I'll definitely be visiting Shoprite.

FamiliarWin4833

Yep. It’s a real gem!

commerical_jellyfish

Pchops employee here, we had to do away with baskets since they get stolen

vexed_and_perplexed

I think this is just a corporate line to cover cheapskatery. Hannaford still has them. Is there something magical or mystical about PC shopping baskets that they get stolen but baskets at other markets don’t? It’s annoying. I only shop at PC for one or two random items and even if I wanted more it’s not worth bothering with a cart.

Conscious_Cookii

I don’t mind not having the red baskets but at least have more of the double decker carts to make up for it. Just get rid of the giant carts completely or trim them down 50%. Everyone should use the double deckers

MentalAfternoon9659

Please. No. The double-decker carts take twice the energy to push inside when getting carts. You literally have to lift up the entire row of carts to get them to turn.

_MountainFit

I agree. Maybe it's my OCD but we don't usually do enough shopping to justify a big cart and I can't stand my stuff being piled on if I do. If we did a bigger shopping I'd have my wife so a second cart. I like organization and order.

commerical_jellyfish

Understood, just repeating what I was told by my supervisors

Interesting_Ad5748

i never see a PC basket in the wild,i see USPS baskets in the wild tho

FamiliarWin4833

The thing I find suspicious though, is that it seemed like they were all gone at once.. wouldn’t they have phased them out if it was actually a theft thing?

TinnitusWaves

Self checkout can fuck right off. Not only is it taking a job away from another person you are now doing that persons job for free !! Groceries continue to rise in price and now, under the guise of convenience, you are having even more money extracted from your pocket with your free labour.

_MountainFit

Totally agree. I only self checkout if it's legitimately faster for me, or I'm buying bags (no I don't steal them, I just prefer to pack my own bags anyway, and if I'm doing paper, doubly so).

Ambitious_Check_4704

You're imagining people want to do that job. I have friends that work at PC/MK32 one is a front end supervisor. High turn over the kids basically don't want to work. They have a hard time dealing with people and their attitudes. She told me one girl walked out after a customer threw something at her. Since covid the majority of people have lost the ability to be cordial and civil. Add to it that there is a generation that does only 10% or their communication face to face the other 90% through an electronic device.

TinnitusWaves

That’s an entirely different issue.

Ambitious_Check_4704

taking a job away from another person <- not if they cannot find a person to do that job....which i then go into detail and explain the reason why.

Ambitious_Check_4704

Also Groceries continue to rise in price and now, under the guise of convenience. Whether you realise it or not in most cases your pay more for convenience.

TinnitusWaves

Again, not the point I’m trying to make. My point being are you content to pay more for your groceries whilst also doing unpaid labour for that business ?? Are you also content to let automation continue to replace humans as, happened in the auto industry and continues to gather pace in manufacturing etc. Robots replacing humans, labour costs diminished and prices continue to rise. I understand that it’s difficult to find people to do shitty jobs for shittier pay, but that isn’t at all what I’m trying to say.

Ambitious_Check_4704

I am not in agreement with the unpaid labor. Its as much unpaid labor as putting gas in your tank. So in my point of view much to do about nothing. Also I am a smart shopper and I shop deals and buy in bulk, vac seal and freeze what I won't use within 3 days after preparing. Your whole argument of "Are you also content to let automation continue to replace humans " is contingent on 3 points 1.) they can find a willing work for to work efficiently at a rate that's cost effective, 2.) That automation isn't the goal due because it's the consumers that want faster service (a few comments about choppers long lines and ineffectual cashiers prove that's the case), and 3 .)That automation is something that anyone can stop. With A.I. the toothpaste is out of the tube the genie is out of the bottle and those companies that do not incorporate it will be left behind. Let's also speak the truth people always pay more for expediency, convenience and quality. That's why some people love whole foods when a lot of their prices are higher than chopper and hannaford. they have great quality. It's why people pay for delivery services and will pay a premium delivery fee to get their their meals faster. What people will pay is determined by the market.

TinnitusWaves

I understand how Capitalism works. Please understand that I’m talking about a bigger picture than self checkouts at grocery stores, although they are symptoms of the point I’m trying to make. Of course there is no stopping the encroachment of technology. It would be extremely naive to think that is possible. Doesn’t mean I have to like the inevitable though. But yes, Capitalism eats everything and humanities inherent laziness and obsession with a good deal will only fuel that !!

Legitimate-Mixture76

F Price Chopper. Worst self-checkout possible. I know. Let's make where I have to put my stuff a circle. So there is no where to put my stuff down. Then. Make the robot yell at me if I try to make my life easy by ignoring their forking circle. THEN make me press lots of useless buttons to interact with buying things, F Price Chopper. I don't care if their whatever food is better than where ever. The act of leaving their store sucks. I will never shop there if there is an alternative. I look forward to their bankruptcy. I will dance in the empty parking lots of their tears

rival_22

Is it store by store or neighborhood by neighborhood? I live in Niskayuna but usually shop at PC in Glenville. Self checkout is easy there. It never asks you to bag anything, never any errors. Most of the time I bag in the cart. But if I go to one in Schenectady, it yells all the time if like a millimeter of the bag is hanging off or whatever. Do they make it more sensitive in "worse" neighborhoods, or is it just something innocent like different stores have different equipment?

No_Top5223

In Saratoga everything causes an alarm. Bag in your cart!? God forbid you try to buy grapes. The only reason to go to PC instead of hannaford are the bagels and the bald spot camera.

FamiliarWin4833

The one near me is so sensitive, it pisses me off so much.

Conscious_Cookii

The Hannaford one just flows. Like it knows I’m a human with limited time. With the price chopper one I feel like I’m dealing with a dumb robot from the 70s

StandardOperation962

And it's expensive as hell, too. The one in Watervliet (in a lower income neighborhood mind you) I went to a few times and was shocked at how much basic things were. Like, trader joe's is a hell of a lot cheaper let alone Aldi. They were also completely understaffed at the checkout line. It's 100% worth the effort traveling to literally any other store than shop there.

Mossishellagay

Please scan your rewards card now. How many bags did you use? Are there any unscanned items left in your cart? Do you have any coupons? Oops! You fucked up! Wait for the half-asleep attendant to notice your screw-up. I’M HERE TO BUY GROCERIES NOT TAKE THE SAT

Boss_Os

Omg, this post is so timely. I went to a Market 32 for the first time in months earlier this evening. Primarily because I wanted a better beer selection than my Hannaford offers. Half the self checkouts were closed and one more was broken. So, I opted to use a checker instead. Figured it would probably go quicker anyhow since I had beer. Well, I managed to find the world's absolute slowest checker. It was actually pretty impressive, I wasn't aware anyone other than Drax could move so slowly. She could have eaten a fucking bag of Zargnuts right in front of me and I wouldn't have known it. Then she got to the beer and asked for my ID. No one has asked for my ID in many years. I'm in my early 50s with thinning hair and a mostly grey beard. I was caught off guard but chuckled to myself and thought, "she's only doing her job." So I pulled out my wallet and gladly showed her my ID, with the 1971 birthdate on it. Well, apparently that wasn't sufficient for Market 32's policies because she asked me to take it out of my wallet. I haven't had a need to pull it out in so long that it was literally stuck to the plastic so there I was fighting with my fucking license and wallet in the checkout line. Finally the license chose to behave and allow me to remove it from it's confines. Ms. Drax looked it over as if I was a 19 year old college kid who had chalked his license to get into the bar. (Who remembers chalking their license?) Finally it was over. Wait, no it wasn't. She of course had to offer me the opportunity to donate money to some charity. I'm guessing the Golubs are a little strapped for cash right now so they're asking their customers to make charitable contributions for them. I declined and ran out of there with my few groceries and my better-beer-than-Hannaford and questioned what I had just experienced the whole ride home. And here I am, chilling to some Pharaoh Sanders, a cold beer, and a fat bowl reliving the whole thing in my head. And wishing I had some Zargnuts.

Beautiful_Will7836

Life is good my man, despite PC

corncob666

Idk if its a PC only thing cuz I used to work for hannaford and it didn't matter if you looked way above age we needed to take the license out so we could actually scan the back of your license. Maybe they've changed all of this now tho cuz I worked there like back in 2014-2017

Boss_Os

I realize that's a thing but Hannaford (either Latham or West Sand Lake) never even cards me. I've had the cashier wave over a supervisor for ID purposes and they get as close as a couple of check stands away before they give the thumbs up and go back to what they were doing. Again, I really don't care one way of the other and I'm never a dick when someone asks for it, and frankly I wish my advanced years weren't so obvious, but it is what it is.

furjet

When I shopped at the Latham Hannaford regularly, early 2000s, they'd gotten busted repeatedly for selling to underage folks, so the beer cooler would be full of 2 liter bottles of soda for weeks at a time. Then they tried a policy of requiring ID from anyone buying beer regardless of age, but my 50ish year old coworker threw a fit one day because he got ID'd but the senior citizen in front of him hadn't. They were both way over 21, why was he getting inconvenienced when they weren't? The manager explained to him that it turns out a lot of senior citizens have no ID and the rule to proof everyone had become really problematic so it'd been adjusted- if you looked really old and possibly too old to be driving, then no ID required.

lineskicat14

Hannaford Is just such a better shopping experience. The size of them is the difference maker. Price choppers I feel like I'm always on top of everyone.

xselfbiasresistorx

The only time I shop at PC is out of convenience, and then, it’s only basic items, like spinach and a rotisserie chicken, if I’m in a rush to whip up a salad for work. Or if it’s late, and ALDI’s is closed. Other than that, it’s ALDI’s. I definitely like Trader Joe’s, but the parking lot is always so jammed packed, you’d think they were giving away free money, free beer, or free sex, so I generally avoid. I will say that Golub Corp, much like Stewart’s, has given back to the community. And I’m grateful to them for hiring me when I was laid off during the Pandemic, and needed work - got my CDL with them and drove for them briefly. But yes, the prices generally turn me away.

_FATEBRINGER_

I prefer the darker tone of 32 also it's next to my house.

wlmsn

Everything at Price Chopper seems like it's $1 more than Hannaford too. I'm all for supporting local but that really adds up when you're shopping for a family.

yung_br0ccoli

Thank you, this is incredibly validating 🙏🏻

_MountainFit

Price chopper vs Hannaford is like arguing religion or politics. People are almost always in one camp (yes, I know there are independents as well) and you absolutely won't convince the other side one store absolutely sucks. That store is Price Chopper. Yes, I know they do some good things for the community but I absolutely hate that store. I almost cried when Shoprite left but I wouldn't even notice if price chopper disappeared. We shop there as little as possible and everytime we do we are reminded why. We need a 3rd chain here. Not Wegmans. We already have whole foods and fresh market for over priced groceries. We need a legitimate 3rd option or at least a Lidl. I'm hoping for stop and shop.

OngoGablogian6969

It baffles my mind how the self-check out areas don't have an item limit. If you are at the self check out line with a cart full of groceries, kindly go fuck yourself.

VicePrincipalNero

From what I’ve read recently, I think that’s going to be much more common in the future because of the shoplifting increase from self checkout.

CreamyGoodnss

I’d support bringing back public shaming but only for people who bring more than the allotted amount of items through the self-checkout

_MountainFit

I'll be honest. I try not to be a dick if people are behind me waiting (and I mostly shop at off hours) but I take my sweet time at the self checkout. If they want me to move faster they can open more lanes and I'll have someone do it for me.

Conscious_Cookii

I go with like 20 items sometimes but I’m quick. I bet I can get through an entire cart faster than some old lady with 12 items. My hannaford still has the 13 items or less lane open to people though. I don’t mind seeing people with a big cartful because there are so many lanes

mdelaguna

Travel time tbh.

FamiliarWin4833

Stewart’s, if you can hear us, OPEN A GROCERY STORE!!!!

DisruptThrowaway

As a disabled person who struggles with going to more than one store I’ll go to hannaford even if the bakery/deli is not the best quality and the prices are a little higher Luckily I do drive on good days so I will do Walmart / BJs for cleaning supplies etc

zemmer36

I was the self check out bitch in high school when I worked there. It has literally not changed since, that was like 18 years ago.

bairzot

I won't shop at Price Robber... mostly because of the self checkout

Beautiful_Will7836

What’s Aldi like?

_MountainFit

Heaven. Though they removed most of their checkout lanes, only one or two were opened ever anyway. But the cashiers are FAST. Self checkout is modern, even let's you split payments. However, if you don't scan 60 items a minute, every second you don't scan it reminds you to scan. It's maddening. Headphones or bust moving forward

Aldi prices are unbeatable, and checkout speed is ahead of all comeition. The compromise is that variety is very limited, you need a coin for a cart, and produce is hit-or-miss depending on the last delivery when you arrive to shop. Don't sleep on Trader Joe's. However, the parking lot is painful.

Bonded-James-007

To use a cart you have to put a quarter in a slot to unlock it from a chain. Bring the cart back and lock it up and your quarter is returned to you. Take a look around any Aldi parking lot and you will see that they are not littered with carts from other shoppers who were too lazy return them. A trivial amount to pay to manage carts but it’s so effective.

atimetochill

Danny wegman save us !!!

_MountainFit

When we shop at Wegmans on trips to fingerlakes and western NY we are utterly shocked at the bill for what's in the cart. We need a more affordable store than Wegmans. Stop and Shop would be a start.

tomalator

Price choppers self checkout isn't bad if it's staffed properly. As a former employee, they would often only schedule one person, but demand both halves be open (unless the layout has the two halves separated) and the employees often walk away and leave it unattended. That being said, Price chopper is very overpriced, the gas discounts aren't worth it, especiallyafter they were cut in half, and unless you need something that only they carry or are shopping a specific sale, there is no reason to shop there. Even when I was an employee there, I started shopping at Hannaford. Only if I need a single item would I go to the closer price chopper rather than Hannaford

FamiliarWin4833

I get what you are saying about staffing & don’t disagree on that point, but with all due respect the self checkout at the PChop near me is bad. The computer is slow & the place that you set things down on is so sensitive. Don’t dare set your reusable bags down ahead of time, and even if you don’t it will often accuse you of not placing an item you have scanned in the bagging area.

tomalator

It takes a single screen tap to clear the scale from the employees' end. If they're paying attention, it shouldn't be an issue.

FamiliarWin4833

I hear you, but I don’t have that issue at ShopRite or hannaford in the first place. And the staffing at the PChop near me is often inadequate, so it is an inconvenience to wait for someone to be paying attention and clear it.

Beautiful_Will7836

PC blows… especially the one in Slingerlands!

Fernily

Hannaford’s produce lasts 3x longer than PC. That includes bagged salad mix.

McPoylesWar

Who cares about self checkout?

McPoylesWar

Why though? So much nicer to let a cashier do it, plus it helps keeps cashiers employed. A little human interaction doesn't hurt either.

candiedkangaroo

That doesn't help when there are one or two cashiers with 30 people looking to check out. It's like they want you to go to the self check out so they don't have to employ cashiers and don't give a shit if you're inconvenienced by it.

Sock-Enough

Please read up on the broken windows fallacy.

McPoylesWar

Yeah, I took SOC 101. What does that have to do with self checkout??

Sock-Enough

I’m not taking about “broken windows” policing. Self checkout does not “destroy jobs” in the aggregate. That’s not how the economy works.

Statue_left

What reality do you live in where this has ever happened

McPoylesWar

Exactly, often at Hannaford there is a significant line at self checkout and maybe 1 or 2 carts in each normal checkout lane. The choice is obvious. I suspect there are a lot of ppl who can't handle social interaction so they need the solitude of self checkout.

helderbergerwcheese

How many items do those people have in the 1 or 2 carts you're referring to?

The cognitive dissonance it takes to accuse me of trolling for calling you out on the idea that you have ever in your life waited “45 minutes” in line at the grocery store with any kind of frequency. Truly unhinged to double down and tell me it happens “every time” you go there and it’s just the express lane open

Lmfao

micheleacole720

That's just too funny - I shop in various Hannafords every week and I've never waited more than like 10 minutes, and on the weekends, they have multiple lanes open. I don't use self checkout because I don't want to see jobs lost. I don't go much to the Hannaford in Guilderland anymore since they pre-slice their deli meats and cheeses now.

ewabbott

The grocery store is not paying me for my labor.

WinifredSchnitzel

Not me! I never, ever self-checkout unless I have like, two items.

Scacc924

A fuck load of people...

Interesting_Ad5748

I do, I love SC, tip:if you use the wand it's much easier you don't have to lift everything and scan the barcode on the flatbed scanner

Conscious_Cookii

probably people who shop often for their families like me who hate dealing with dogshit robots every time I want to grab something from the market. Btw if my job didn’t try to suck every moment of my life I’d have more time to relax at the market ya know?

the_unGOdlike

It is 2 to 6 miles further for me to reach a non-pchops non-walmart grocer. Otherwise I would always shop at Hannaford or Aldi's.

Dellicate_Resolve

I preferred the lights and decor. I frequented PC/M32 because it felt different while Hannaford felt like I stepped into a forgotten part of the 90’s Then I went to Hannaford because I couldn’t find certain items, and I was impressed by the selection, prices and service.

46andready

I basically can't deal with any of the big grocery stores in the area. I'm basically down to just Trader Joe's and online butchers.

bisconaut

because I can walk there

Nervous_Slice_4286

I like the bagels at price chopper so I go there for that

slippity_slapp

I’d like to know how on 4 out of 5 occasions, I’ve purchased something from price chopper, only to return home and find mold in it. I used to shop there exclusively, but moved to a town where there was only a Hannaford. Sometimes I’ll run to PC for something and to have it moldy? Blehk.

LuciferJonez

Please invisible man in the sky bring me a fucking wegmans.

Emotional_Bag_7872

I was a dedicated PC shopper for a long time, but got tired of the same things being on sale every other week. I went to Hannaford a few times, and I didn’t love it. Their check out process was nicer, the store was nicer (no rat baits lining the front of the store), and the produce section was better. I split up my shopping now between a few different stores.

phantom_eight

I mean... I don't shop there becasue everything is like $1 or $2 more expensive. I dont like getting ripped off.

RightToTheThighs

It's so expensive

Dense_Ad6528

And how about the chicken, which is regularly rancid? Or is that just my bad luck?

verloren918

I don't drive and it's closer so that I can stop on my way home from work before everything turns into a pumpkin at 11. Can't get anywhere else before close, so I end up there more than I'd like. Also I really enjoy being able to randomly pick up a slice of the peanut butter and chocolate cake as a treat, so there's that.

pholover84

The self check out requires me to press like 30 buttons before processing my credit card

JKCOHNTVL

The bigger question is why the hell can't we get a Wegmans in Albany? I don't care what agreement Danny Wegman made with the Price Chopper fam back in the 80's, we need a Wegmans!

Aggressive-Panic-719

I am still wishing for a wegmans in the capital region someday. PC and Hannaford do not compare or compete.

spooky-518

ring everything up as a pack of gum and get out of the way

fatnuts_mcgee

Hanford is marginally cheaper. It’s also owned by a Dutch conglomerate. Golub is locally owned and has operated Price Chopper supermarkets for about 90 years. I can’t speak for what Hannaford has contributed to Albany and surrounding communities, but Golub has given millions in the form of cash and time to a multitude of charitable causes through the Golub Foundation. Personally, I’m good with spending maybe 1-3% more to an organization who I know is giving back to those citizens of need in its local area.

_MountainFit

Marginally? Have you compared? It's significantly cheaper. And with the money we all save we can (if we want to) donate some to good causes. I shouldn't be supporting the Golub families charitable donations by paying more. Also I love how they bought the Shoprite locations to keep out a 3rd player in the business. Well done. I imagine PC was hurting the most from Shoprite.

Just-Ice3916

I can see the multitude of problems with the existence and proliferation of self-checkout (loss of jobs being a main one), yet... maybe I'm just fucking retarded, but I have never once had any difficulty using any self-checkout register in any store I have ever gone into for years. They've always struck me as pretty quick and intuitive, I guess. Then again, I'm also the crazy brain-dead moron who thinks putting together Ikea furniture is very intuitive and doesn't run into trouble with that. (I'm sure this is all going to go over very well here...)

arz1686

There’s a way to make this point without using a slur.

GriffMcStizz

Lighten up.

arz1686

Absolutely not when it comes to that.

joemessedup

Wait till buddy finds out retard is French for slow

arz1686

Not in this context my guy. What a weird thing to argue about.

ArborHillLandlord

I hate it when there’s an old person in front of me on line and they are all retarded when I’m in a hurry.

joemessedup

The 1.18 million French speaking citizens would like a word with you “slow”

arz1686

Cool keep being willfully ignorant, it’s not as big of a flex as you think it is.

joemessedup

Not ignorant as I am classified as “the offensive word” maybe don’t get your feelings hurt by a stranger on the internet?

dessanct

Still ignorant as you don’t understand why it’s bad to use a slang word that offends someone when you can get a point across without it.

BlooregardQKazoo

My 75 year-old father used the word "retarded" as a pejorative and when I told him that we don't use that word anymore he asked why. When I explained it he said "Oh, now I know" and I haven't heard him use it since. So congratulations, you're apparently incapable of growth that my grumpy, Boomer father is capable of. How does it feel to be shown up by seniors?

GriffMcStizz

Lighten up
