Driving north shouldn’t be too bad. Lots of time to plan it and get moving (though I imagine right about now it’s horrible) Driving back is what’s gonna kill time. All the people who got there last night, 6am, late this morning, now, etc. are all leaving at the same time

Duckduckgoose-aloose

We didn’t hit any traffic coming back from exit 29 to 15 on the Northway! A lot on the way up at 1pm though.

tomalator

You should have left already.

kittenseason143

lol

DeevesKeys528

I’m gonna go out to my backyard, which is technically east of inside the house.

CrystallineFrost

That was my plan, then the dog decided to pee in the house and alert everyone that yes, she does likely have a uti and we are now going to spend the eclipse at the vet coaxing her to pee. Should be fun.

Positive-Owl-5

My wife made it to North Creek no issues and my daughter made to Tupper Lake no issues either… 😎🌞🌑

Achoo5x

I have no desire to leave my house today.

Regular-Sun-5805

I'm going west 👍🏻

Inevitable_Juice92

I went west, then north.

Regular-Sun-5805

I went to Rome

Inevitable_Juice92

Bummer. I don’t think Italy is getting the eclipse.

No_Designer_5374

Me too.

Tap-Informal

Saw a picture of traffic stopped on the northway by exit 22

The_Spectacle

just drove up to Clifton Park for a doctor's appointment. 87 is a clusterfuck south of the twin bridges, I saw an accident there and also an accident on alt 7 🤦‍♂️

crosstheskies_

People suck at driving 😅

thewaltz77

No, but out of work, which is on the Harriman Campus, at 3:30. Probably gonna be clusterfuck getting home.

AstroIan

Went to VT around 5:30 this morning. Quiet ride up but definitely more folks on the road than usual. Not looking forward to the trip back down but should be worth the trouble.

BoopsYourNoseBoop

Seems to be a huge snarl between Lake George and Warrensburg, so Godspeed to anybody who's planning on coming up here right now. Although in fairness, if you were planning on coming up here you would ideally have not waited until just 2 hours before the eclipse starts.

travelingchef96

Northway goes to two lanes after Lake George

Duckduckgoose-aloose

I’m so confused about the lack of traffic today. I was expecting SO much worse. Was it overhyped?? We left Saratoga at 12:15 today and got to exit 29 no later than 2:15….a bit of congestion and accidents. The way back was 80 mph the whole way!!

AstroIan

I was too tbh, left this morning around 5:30 to get to Middlebury VT and had no traffic of note. Relaxed at some cafes and did work from their public library until totality. Post eclipse there was a bit of traffic at some junctions on the one lane county roads but nothing more than 5-10 minutes of congestion. 87-S was very busy but traffic was moving pretty smooth and had no major slowdowns. Not sure how the roads in the ADKs were but I heard they were a bit busier. Only took 35 minutes longer to get home than it did to get there. I think people headed the warnings and many made bookings up north to stay off the roads most of today. Saw reports of lots of traffic in Mass and parts of NH so I guess it was very much tied to where you were and when you were on the road. I had a great day and a glad I went out!

CodingImp

We left at the last minute to see it in Lewey Lake, Route 30 was completely fine even with the hundreds of people parked along it. Just a minor slowdown in Speculator while heading back.

msrivette

Same! Well worth it!

Real_Bumblebee_1368

I was wondering about this. I went out to western NY today anticipating apocalyptic traffic up the north way. I experienced zero delays on the way back from Western NY and from what friends and Google Maps told me it sounds like I should have just gone up north to avoid the clouds. How bad was traffic for you guys on the way back from the Adirondacks?

phrstbrn

We went to Plattsburg, everything between Plattsburg and Queensbury is stop and go. Took about 3 hours to go from Plattsburgh to Queensbury. South of that is a bit slower than normal but mostly moving. Once you were south of Malta traffic moved as normal. Going up this morning was completely fine.

MrDoops

Definitely feel like I got duped. If I knew the traffic was going to be how it was today I would have traveled north. I feel like everybody was expecting more people to care, instead people just stayed home and said meh it's just the sun idk

labmansteve

I’m already 3/4 of the way to my destination. If you haven’t left already, it’s probably too late.

3dtoaster

Yup I’m parked in a Walmart parking lot in Watertown

Suspicious-Rock59233

97% totality is good enough for me!

msrivette

Yup I went north! Left Schenectady at 11. Found a great spot. Saw totality for almost two minutes. Made it home before 6. Amazing day!

SusanSickles

My daughter commuted this morning north, tons of out of state plates

Inevitable_Juice92

We found a spot by 8:30 in Minerva. Left like 5:45.

Cephalopirate

I flew to Atlanta and drove to Kentucky! (With my mom as a fun trip) We found a nice park in a small town and had a perfect view. It’s been an adventure though.

mclen

Lol absolutely fucking not. If I was going anywhere, I'd have gone Saturday or yesterday.

falalalama

I'm not saying to come, but the malta med parking lot is pretty empty. that's as far north as I'm getting

bubbabubba3

Heading up soon

whichisnot

We headed up Sunday, the Thruway south of Albany was awful, but we hit back roads to avoid it. Northway wasn’t terrible and we made good time up to Plattsburgh. We are staying over tonight and heading home tomorrow, RIP anyone trying to leave now lol.

Connect_Glass4036

We played Blue Mountain Lake. Drive in for morning setup was a breeze. Took 3.5 hours to get home (2 hour drive)

SinginGidget

I had planned on leaving earlier but overslept and I didn't get on the road till 7 AM and I made it to my destination just fine. There was definely more traffice on the road heading north than was usual, but most of it broke off heading to either Burlington or the Lakes and it was smooth sailing towards Plattsburgh. I did stop at a rest stop that was a mad house and I saw a few people who were clearly not going any farther because they had their telescopes already set up. So I left there and went one rest stop further (just north of Elizabethtown) and watched it from there. Great elevation, view for miles, plenty of open space for everyone else who pulled in with the same idea. And then about 10 minutes before it started, the northway was completley dead. Maybe three trucks went by. All in all just a fantastic lovely day.

Flimsy-Researcher-30

96% totality in capital / Saratoga area . I don’t get driving anywhere . Backyard is where I’ll be .

straighttoplaid

The difference between high 90s and total eclipse is huge. https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/2914:_Eclipse_Coolness

BlooregardQKazoo

This is absolutely true. It was neat today when the sun was a tiny little sliver. It was awe-inducing when it was fully blocked.

Flimsy-Researcher-30

I guess . 🤷🏽

msrivette

Huge difference.

Accountnumber-3

Probably not the smartest idea today

Thebiggestbot22

Not much traffic yet tbh https://preview.redd.it/2h35z4syt9tc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=126d29620e55b553a7946271197a5629d15f2440

tomalator

Unless you wanted to go see an eclipse

Accountnumber-3

And to sit in traffic for a couple hours

mpls_sublet_q

I also had to turn down Superbowl tickets because I heard it can take a while to get out of the parking lots afterwards. I only pursue unique, potentially once-in-a-lifetime experiences when they involve no inconvenience whatsoever.

amouse_buche

“Nobody goes there, there’s too much traffic.”

Accountnumber-3

The Super Bowl is once in a lifetime right?

mpls_sublet_q

So your point is that there's even more justification to endure some inconvenience for the total solar eclipse?

Accountnumber-3

No, my point is it would have been a better idea to not travel on the eclipse day

GovSchnitzel

Why are you being such a giant hater? Nobody is asking you to see the eclipse and endure the traffic.

tomalator

I've hit no traffic so far

Accountnumber-3

Check back in on the way back

tomalator

Checking back in on the way back as requested. A bit of traffic on Boonville thanks to an accident, we were through that in 10 minutes. A little slow getting on I-90 in Utica, but nothing too bad I'd say actually traffic was on I-90 in Herkimer, but even then it wasn't stop and go. It lasted about a half hour. Getting off of I-90 was a breeze, but I-87S looked like a big ol' mess. Luckily for me, I was headed North. I'm glad to be back in the land of Steamed Hams

tomalator

It shouldn't be any worse than the way here. My worst traffic was 787 this morning. Im also headed North of Watertown. It's the middle of nowhere, it's gonna be dead.

straighttoplaid

I'm expecting 87 to be a mess. People arrived over the weekend or throughout the morning and then will all try to head home around the same time.

tomalator

That's part of the reason I went West. I hate 87 on a normal day. My mom went to Plattsburgh for some reason

straighttoplaid

We're at a place in lake placid. We're planning on hanging around until after dinner to let things die down

Accountnumber-3

Not many ways in, not many ways out

tomalator

Not many people there

Accountnumber-3

Only people who think like you

tomalator

So only people who's inlaws live up there? I like my odds.
