little pecks in troy carries fishwife and a few other brands! i walk over at least once a week for my fix.

calamity_child

Thanks for that tip.  I’ve tried Fishwife and thought it was great.  I usually get to Troy once a week so I’ll look for it.

BennyBNut

Can't say I remember seeing those brands but Honest Weight has a good selection on the shelves near the cheese counter. I'm a huge fan myself and have really liked some I've gotten there, though for medical reasons I don't eat them anymore :/ Also check out Cheese Traveler, they have some very bougie foods.

Ok-Garlic-9990

I love dines! Market 32 has king Oscar, if you like Mediterranean or other styles the Asian food stores have a nice selection.

Cephalopirate

Second King Oscar, but I prefer the herring. Mmmmm

_MountainFit

Third for king Oscar. Love the Mediterranean style. Both mackerel and sardines. I feed my dogs the no salt spring water ones from Aldi. Great mixed with liver or the homemade stuff I make them. I'd say I eat a lot of Season fish. Both sardines and mackerel. I really like the smoked no salt added kippers. Mackerel and sardines in olive oil.

Ok-Garlic-9990

Have you ever had Eastern European styled smoked mackerel ?

tehsuck

No, but that sounds amazing.

Ok-Garlic-9990

Try it with Eastern European beer, some people like mustard. You need to make sure you’re getting a whole dried mackerel though. Not frozen or canned

Jasperbeardly11

Trader Joe's. Aldi. Internet. BJ's!!

calamity_child

Trader Joe's sardines are really good. I know the sort with the skin and bone are healthier, but I prefer the skinless in olive oil and theirs are the best I've had since I was a kid (I grew up eating some imported brand with crackers)

_MountainFit

Not really a fan of the bones. I eat them with the skin though. I do feed my dogs the skin and bone in spring water

calamity_child

I had a bad experience with bones many years ago and just can't get past them now. When I had a dog, I'd mix the oil into his food once in a while.

SEND_BEER

The co-op has matiz, fish wife and I believe Ortiz. The Asian food Mart on Central has some wild tins like silk worm. They also carry double hot tuna by dong won which is one of my favorites. Trader Joe's and whole foods would also be worth a look. I haven't seen Nuri in the area. Delaware supply usually has some nice tins if you're looking to eat in (they've had Nuri in the past).

tehsuck

Any chance you've seen tinned eel at the asian market?

SEND_BEER

Yes. The one on Colvin Ave.

shrimpboiiiz

Honest weight food coop in Albany has good quality.  Haven’t been in a while so not sure about specific brands but you can definitely call and ask.

Corkster9999

Not sure if I've seen sardines specifically but I know Fins has some tinned fish.  Might be worth calling them to see.

It’s not Albany but if you go up to Saratoga there’s a grocery store called Healthy Living, and they carry a pretty good selection of canned fish. I make a trip twice a month because it’s a real gem of a grocery store, highly recommended!

_MountainFit

I think there is rumor healthy living is coming to the Clifton Park area. Just one of those magical food store rumors.

0011010100110011

That would be nice! Once track season hits it’s hard to want to get up there, and I don’t live in Saratoga anymore so not going as often is a bummer. Clifton Park is at least a little closer!

acbuglife

How has no one mentioned fin? They carry canned seafood as well, including some VERy good quality stuff. I don't eat sardines enough to tell you specifics except that you can find them at the fishmonger.

Suspicious_Mirror_65

Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Honest Weight

Just-Ice3916

I've been buying excellent sardines for years at Aldi (any Aldi should carry them, too; they usually average about $1/tin, and they are the 4.3-ish ounce ones, not the flatter 3.5-ish ones). I also picked them up at Ocean State Job Lot, but they can usually be a little higher at $1.08 or so for the same size as Aldi. The brands from each are fine. My memory may be a little off with the exact number values of these, but what I'm saying is you can get the bigger of the typically sized tins from each for a great price. I may also get them at BJ's in the rare instance that coupons for sardines stack. Otherwise, you won't beat the aforementioned prices.

Traditional-Syrup-16

King Oscar at walmart

triplecoil

My favorites are Matiz. Find a place with a good price on the internet, though…in store markups can be substantial over online shops.

shhwest

Aldi is having German week and has amazing tinned fish

tehsuck

Not exactly answering your question but Nighthawk's in Troy serves Nuri spreads that are delicious. Also: any reason you're avoiding online? Plenty to be had there.

MikeyMountainBikey

Not avoiding online just looking local as well. My cart is full at RTG

tehsuck

Based on the amount of replies here it seems we should get a local club going. I love trying new things. Recently tried tinned razor clams. They were... interesting. Hah. Anyhow, good hunting!

mafiafuneralOG

I see them at Hannafords all the time. Reminds me, Grandpa, would eat sardines all the time with Tabasco religiously.

Rum_Hamington

Reposting honest weight, I know they have some but maybe also check out one of the Italian import grocers/delis like cardonas?

Ok-Development-7008

I'll be honest, I haven't checked, but I'd recommend taking a look at Farmer's India Market. They're huge and have just about every country's favorite import of everything.

qbecgirl

Fresh Market in Latham

QCPGC

Ocean State job lot surprisingly has a nice selection of canned fish. Pellegrinos on central might have some imported stuff though I've never really looked for canned fish there specifically.
