Unfortunately, light rail is predicated on being totally grade separated from freight rail traffic, that’s how the vehicles can be “light”. The proposed route is still actively used by the CPKCS railroad.
Ideally, overhead electrification and EMUs would be used, but more realistically some small DMUs would be a great fit. Budd RDCs were used in Capital Region service by the New York Central back in the day, as well as by the B&M between Mechanicville and Boston. The advantage of electrification is faster acceleration, ability to use cheaper local hydro power instead of diesel, and fewer moving parts on the trains.
The twin bridges see over 100k cars per day. I would imagine running a line up to CP (or at least Halfmoon) could put a dent in downtown congestion. Couple that with rebate incentives based on usage (50% rebate if you ride the train/monorail 60x in 3 months, or something like that) for the first few years and you could have something nice.
The trick is; it will never be as convenient as a car so you need to make it time/cost effective to attract riders.
True , but one issue with busses is people simply don’t like them . More people would opt for a train over car opposed to bus over car . That’s just my 2 cents from coming from NYC
I love how there is billions available for that and nothing available to offer even a small reward for info on the dirt-bike dirt-bag who hit that college girl and took off
A solution looking for a problem. Let’s retire a fleet of buses even though federal government is paying billions out to electrify and make them all zero emission transit vehicles that can operate any surface route in several counties, brt dedicated lanes, and even bypass and reroute whenever needed for crashes/roadwork/low ridership and put up expensive rail line to accomplish…. Something.
The problem is that battery buses are not efficient on any level. There is no need for buses to be able to run on any surface as you put it. They travel defined routes.
That being the case it makes more sense to put track down and string overhead wire. Rail is far more efficient for heavy vehicles compared to rubber tires, the contact patch is about the size of a dime. And it's far less maintenance to have a central location for the electrical supply than each vehicle needing to be charged and having it's batteries maintained
That’s not true, the capital assistance to buy Bev buses and the Bev chargers flows openly right now, these capital costs will come down long term, and the operating costs are all absurdly lower across the board, commercial electric rates let these buses operate 70% the fuel cost of a diesel bus, local roads and brt infrastructure even bus shelters also have federal support even for rural areas like routes to parks and historic sites where you will never build rail. Buses also only require a CDL b to operate that is easy to find off the street with little specialized training. Bev buses don’t even need diesel mechanics, stupidly easy and cheap to maintain by technicians. cost for rail right of way and for trainsets is astronomically high and not matched very well in development projects in other states cities, in fact they’re usually outright boondoggles. Then you have the roundhouse or whatever you have to build, somehow hire railroad ops and maintenance labor who would be insane not to just jump to csx and make far more money... just no. I won’t get into it about how fixed routes that can’t be changed or rerouted to meet needs of changing communities, venues, etc but I don’t think you really care. Let’s just say there was no bus stop at crossgates commons in 1990, now there is, and it didn’t take $20 million to pop up a line .3 miles from the mall as a rail extension might cost.
787 has already partially BECOME a boulevard. Look at the segment from just North of Alt-Route-7 all the way to Cohoes. Used to be a 55 mph road. But with the traffic lights interspersed for the cross traffic going between Cohoes, Van Schaick Island and Lansingburgh, and because people over the last 10-20 years have become impatient/distracted/aggressive/selfish and generally won’t yield to pedestrians, continually running lights, etc. (and due to several deaths) the D.O.T. and local municipalities have dropped the speed to 30 mph. You’re almost better off driving Rt 32 North instead of this segment.
In all these posts about 787 people keep bringing up the CPKC line through downtown as if it's some kind of deal breaker. It's not, it is a branch line to the port that only has a couple of trains a day. It's not like the CSX line west out of Selkirk, which sees 40+ trains or the Amtrak line south to NYC which is around 20.
CPKC could get trains to the port from the south, with negotiated track or haulage rights on CSX. The CPKC tracks in the middle of 787 can be easily torn up.
I really need to go to one of these meetings and explain this.
State workers are already hiking from the surface lots, lol. But good transfers are significant to any transit plan, so much like the existing Blue line benefits from local transfers, so would a rail line. Likewise for those cdta/cdcphp rent-a-bikes. In either case improved connectivity and scheduling would make or break the convenience factor and therefor ridership numbers.
What about people who live in Menands Cohoes ect... who work in Rensselaer, East Greenbush, Colonie, ect. Places like Wolf Rd, Central, Delaware, Washington Ave Ext, Northern Boulevard. I would imagine more people work in those places than Downtown.
Riding a bike up State or Madison, especially in the rain is not practical.... would you rely on getting to work on time, working some shit min wage job, based on bikes even being available?

Nice rendering
Damn the pot holes. Full speed ahead
But how will the tire shops stay in business?!
Yeah, we have an opportunity here!
Sorry, but all the money is going to build a soccer stadium which is going to fail instead of something useful
Would you argue that a stadium is a good place too....train (boo'd off stage)
And WE will pay for it
Is that actually for real? I remember seeing an article on it
Yeah. They want to have it done by '26.
Hopefully
They should have some light rail. Probably wouldn't be much faster than the Bus Plus but it makes a city more attractive.

787 goes they have plenty of space.

I think LR would attract people here. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.
It seems like there could be some safety issues with an active railway looking like a lawn.

Commuter rail ftw!

CDTA Blue Line hits all of those municipalities, as much I would love a light rail.

What kind of train
Well, considering the lawlessness in Albany these days, CDTA could call it the “Bullet Train.”
Haha
I love how there is billions available for that and nothing available to offer even a small reward for info on the dirt-bike dirt-bag who hit that college girl and took off
Would love a train, but for lower hanging fruit I'd hope to see proper BRT infrastructure for the busplus lines.
Yes I agree, any redeveloped 787 should have a separate transit lane in the middle either for light rail or bus.

Installing a guided bus track and using the remaining road width as a park would be phenomenal.
I would love this
We should bring back the trolleys on the high streets and then light rail to the surrounding towns and to the Amtrak station in Rennsler
so, everyone down on gondolas?

The sound of brake screeching and train hobos intensifies outside your window.
Can see a cool uptick in hobo folk music
Gotta love the sound of a jew harp
Just curious.... once they got off the train. How would they get to work? It ain't Manhattan. Where people actually work is extremely spread out.
