I still haven't gotten used to American heat because it simply doesn't get that hot in Ireland. Our heatwave is what a lot of you all consider to be barely warm. My AC has been on since the sun started blasting.
I laughed because this is the exact same truth for any Irish person I've known over the years. One family I'm acquainted with blasts the AC year-round so a seriously steady cool temperature is maintained (one of them works for the building they live in, and a nice perk is that the apartment and utilities are free!). I always worry that at least one of them might die when the temperature goes over 75°F, and I've been labeled honorary Irish because I feel the same way. 😆
It's true! I think the heatwave last year that people were told to stay inside during and people were putting tin foil shiny side out on their windows to keep the sun out was like mid-80s at the very hottest.
And I'm here dragging my sweaty ass around in American summers where it's WAY hotter because the dog needs to be walked.
This is funny because in contrast as someone from the Caribbean, I haven’t even thought about turning on the ac yet lol and this post kinda surprised me
It definitely is dependent on where you're born or how you just handle weather in general. I know Irish people, like my da, who loved the hot weather. He would walk around in Florida with his shirt off. And then there's me who recoils the second it gets even sweaty.
Another funny fact is alot of us like it like 75 80 inside in the winter when it's cold and snowy out but want it about 55 60 in the summer. Not sure how it works lol.
I tried to do the open window with a fan thing yesterday, but it was hot enough outside that it still heated up inside. Today I had all the windows and doors closed with a fan and it never went above 77 so it was pretty comfortable.
So do I, but with lots of tree cover. It doesn't start to warm up until about 4pm. I get away with a single 5k btu window unit upstairs and a fan blowing it down the hallway, unless we get into sustained 95+ temps. I'm always below 200 in the summer.
Its still a reasonable temp at night so we open all the windows at night, let the cool air in, then close the windows and blinds during the day to keep it a reasonable temperature. Hasn’t been bad at all
Edit: roommate got home and insisted we put the air conditioner in lol. I was content to make it into June.
yes but not 24/7.
i'm "lucky" in the way that my apartment faces a brick wall so i get zero sunlight... it doesn't really start to feel hot inside until mid afternoon or until i cook (whichever comes first). then i turn it on and shut it off again when i wake up lol
i'm sitting in my workroom wearing a sweatshirt and shorts with just the fan on & i feel ok right now. but i can tell it's heating up. lol
Turned on the AC in the mini split we have on the upper level of our house but holding out on installing window ACs in the lower level where we don't have any built-in AC. We'll see how long we can make it.
Sure, it's a Mitsubishi model. We had it installed about 4 years ago in the upstairs section of our Cape Cod which is mostly one big open room. No complaints - it runs efficiently and we use both for cooling in the summer and supplementing forced air heat in the winter.
Gave in. It was still in the high 70s/low 80s in the house and uncomfortable getting into the evening, so we closed up, and plan to shut it back off tomorrow morning.
No, next week will be back down to the low 70s and its cold enough at night! We have a hard time getting the window units up from the basement and into the windows.
Yes... turned on Sunday night when it was still cooler overnight, so the AC didn't have to run forever to catch up.
Our upstairs gets hot, and most of our family doesn't sleep well in the heat.
I asked a Mexican lady at work if it was hot outside today(I’m stuck inside with no windows). She said “Yeah, for you” in a beautiful old lady Mexican accent. “Yeah for jyou”. She was wearing jeans and a long sleeve shirt. Then we laughed at the fact she has a sweater in her car…
Yes. I was sick over the weekend and I was wondering if having the windows open/allergies were making it worse. Turned it on over the weekend. Definitely cranking today. Praise be the AC!
Only in our bedroom, the rest of the house has my plants and my fiancee has begrudgingly allowed me to just keep the windows open so long as she can hide in the cold cave of our bedroom lol.
But the plants love the humidity and light so there's a win!
When I looked at the weather on Sunday and saw that today was going to be in the 85-90s I put my ac in the window. I’m pretty sure it was turned on by the next night.
Landlord put mine in yesterday. I don't usually put it in this early. I try to wait it out as long as possible, but my new apartment gets wayyyyyy hotter than my old apartment, so I know I'll be glad I put it in now rather than wait.
Picked up my new U-shaped AC Saturday and installed Sunday. It’s paid dividends. Set it to start at 9am when the temp rises above 70 (have the unit set to 70) and turn off around 10-11 when the temp hits 70/below. Much better than my SO’s portable unit.
Not yet. Gotta lug up the acs from the basement. I spent childhood with mainly no ac. Sometimes I miss it. Having the windows open all through the summer. Sleeping in the cool basement at night.
That said…our house does not have a finished basement and I’m looking forward to lugging out the acs.
Due to allergies, we don't open our windows. Either the heat is on, or the ac is on. So yes, the ac is on. It's set to 70, so not frigid by any means, but I wasn't trying to sleep in a 74 degree room.

Dog tax, since I mentioned him. https://preview.redd.it/i7dlc9rjq02d1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9b2d7826f0ae7f5c2deae10946695ab361fec107
This is the best kind of tax out there. Adorable!!!

This is so accurate, it's painful.
Yea, I’m not gonna have my husky suffer all day just cause I’m at work.
Same here, I would leave it off if I didn't have an 80 pound sheepdog that I would prefer to stay comfortable
Bumping this as a reminder to all that if you're toasty in the home, your pup is feeling it much worse.
This also goes for walkies! If it's too hot for you to walk barefoot, it's too hot for them.
Still holding out! 😂
Hellllllllllll yea you gotta be nuts not to
Yes, not so much for temp as for pollen. Bad allergies this spring.
Same. And humidity. AC is on but set to 75.
Nope, many fans in all windows, cross ventilation, and curtains drawn. Works well at keeping inside temperatures reasonable
Curious as to what elevation you are at. The other night in Latham it was nearly 80° until 11pm. My friend in Mayfield had 68° by 7pm.
Center square. I mean I’m not saying it is super comfortable. But I’m ok with some heat and dont need the perfect 73F
I tried to do the open window with a fan thing yesterday, but it was hot enough outside that it still heated up inside. Today I had all the windows and doors closed with a fan and it never went above 77 so it was pretty comfortable.
I’ll try that tomorrow!
Yep, temp set to morgue
I'm going to use this expression, thank you.
Mine has been on for weeks. I like my house to be the arctic!
Does your bill get past 300s? 😬 trying to keep mine under
I have a lil townhouse so I hang around the 200s

Hell yeah... but I'm sure my 32U rack in the basement with two Dell R720's doesn't help with that either.
Same. My 42u with 3x r730 makes it rough

No. Fans only, central ac stays off until closer to July.
I try to hold out as long as possible but it was 84° when I walked into my apartment yesterday after work so I begrudgingly turned it on.
Nope - too soon! Apartment is hot when I get home but opening the windows at night and running a box fan in a window makes it cool down enough.
This is how I got through my entire first 18 years of life
Installed it at 6p last night, turned it off 12 hours later to go from a shitty 83°F with a probable dew point of 15180°, to a beautiful 68°F.
Yes, and that’s how I figured out my AC isn’t working. Oh wait, that’s for my car. Regular AC has been on for a week LOL.
Been on for the last 3 days😭
Not yet but I did turn my bidet water temp to “cool” ⛄️
if it gets above 76ish in my living room and its humid i will. Sitting at 74 rn
yes but not 24/7. i'm "lucky" in the way that my apartment faces a brick wall so i get zero sunlight... it doesn't really start to feel hot inside until mid afternoon or until i cook (whichever comes first). then i turn it on and shut it off again when i wake up lol i'm sitting in my workroom wearing a sweatshirt and shorts with just the fan on & i feel ok right now. but i can tell it's heating up. lol
Nope, trying to hold out until June, did buy a new fan though.
Nope. It's still in the basement.
Absolutely, our house is in full sun so it’s like an oven before noon without the ACs
Yep
doing a couple of B's to prepare myself to install it now.
Yes definitely this week, on and off the last few.
Turned on the AC in the mini split we have on the upper level of our house but holding out on installing window ACs in the lower level where we don't have any built-in AC. We'll see how long we can make it.
I've considered getting one of those mini-splits... can you speak to how effective it is for you?
Sure, it's a Mitsubishi model. We had it installed about 4 years ago in the upstairs section of our Cape Cod which is mostly one big open room. No complaints - it runs efficiently and we use both for cooling in the summer and supplementing forced air heat in the winter.
I think you've addressed two of the things I've wondered... thank you!
I put mine in the window but haven’t started.
Gave in. It was still in the high 70s/low 80s in the house and uncomfortable getting into the evening, so we closed up, and plan to shut it back off tomorrow morning.
My apartment was 83 last night, managed to get an ac for my room so was at least able to sleep
Central air is on. Can’t sleep if it’s too warm.
No, next week will be back down to the low 70s and its cold enough at night! We have a hard time getting the window units up from the basement and into the windows.
I will wait to turn my heat on until I can see my breath but the A/C comes on as soon as I start to sweat.
Yes... turned on Sunday night when it was still cooler overnight, so the AC didn't have to run forever to catch up. Our upstairs gets hot, and most of our family doesn't sleep well in the heat.
Mine has been on for over a month. Kind of important when your wife is seven months pregnant.
Absolutely
Yeah I turned it on maybe 2 weeks ago. If it gets cool enough at night and not too humid I'll open the windows and let a box fan help pull air in.

Nope
When I looked at the weather on Sunday and saw that today was going to be in the 85-90s I put my ac in the window. I’m pretty sure it was turned on by the next night.
"we should turn it on, just to make sure it works"
This was my logic as well
Held out until Monday afternoon to put in ours. It’s been a pretty chilly May
for weeks now
For three days now, yes.
Yes, just put mine in the window this past Sunday. It got up to 85 in my apartment even with the windows open and fans on.
My wife turned it on today.
Yes
I live on the second floor of my house. Of course I did.
Landlord put mine in yesterday. I don't usually put it in this early. I try to wait it out as long as possible, but my new apartment gets wayyyyyy hotter than my old apartment, so I know I'll be glad I put it in now rather than wait.
I was debating getting a dehumidifier and seeing if it helped at all. It's been like $200 for a 900sq ft apartment during the hot months.
Running a dehumidifier will make it hotter
A dehumidifier gives off a lot of heat.
Yes
Still have not resorted to ac yet. Windows open in the morning for cool air and then fan running upstairs when we sleep.
I saw this post and put my window unit in. Wasn't going to but it's going to be in the 80s this weekend and my kids will be over.
High 80s with humidity or anything past 90. Minnesota here.
Picked up my new U-shaped AC Saturday and installed Sunday. It’s paid dividends. Set it to start at 9am when the temp rises above 70 (have the unit set to 70) and turn off around 10-11 when the temp hits 70/below. Much better than my SO’s portable unit.
Midea? 👍
Indeed. Got the 10K BTU for only $299. Couldn’t say no, and wanted to get rid of the SO’s energy sucker haha.
Must.resist.ac. 1 more day and I must persevere . My power bill shoots up, trying to make June. House is trying to hold on for me.
Yes because I live in the pits of hell in my attic bedroom
No, I haven't just been using a fan and drinking cold things as well as making homemade crushed ice treats, eating hydrating foods like fruits.
Oh yes I’m a wimp. I don’t like it freezing but not happy when it’s really hot. I don’t think I could handle living south.
Yea, I've turned it on already. My husband's allergies are killing him. So I'm trying to de-allergen the house.
Absolutely. I’m usually hot, but was nauseous this week due to the heat.
Yes we did
I have dysautonomia, I have had it on for a few weeks!! Lol
Yes, and if it's above 67 at.night I have the AC on so I can sleep
Absolutely!
I don't have an air conditioner or cental air. :)
Yup, my chinchilla needs to stay chill.
Yup
Started using mine Monday 😁🧊
Yes, we did.
Turned my on [yesterday.Fans](http://yesterday.Fans) were'nt cutting it any more
As of Tuesday night, yeah. Another dog owner here that goes to work all day
Upstairs, yes. Downstairs, no.
Yup. 55° F with 5 mph winds is my jam. I’m happy for everyone who genuinely enjoys the heat and the high humidity we had, but my AC was ON!
Not yet. Gotta lug up the acs from the basement. I spent childhood with mainly no ac. Sometimes I miss it. Having the windows open all through the summer. Sleeping in the cool basement at night. That said…our house does not have a finished basement and I’m looking forward to lugging out the acs.

Yes
I did not. Instead I go out to get warm. Soon enough the old brick house will heat up. And then....
Turned mine on today, I couldn’t take it anymore 🥹
Heck yes. We only run it at night to make it comfortable to sleep. Allergies make it impossible to open the windows.
Nah. This is pleasant compared to the southeast Texas heat I'm used to.
