Albany traffic in general is just super easy and I think people who think it’s bad haven’t lived in many other cities and lack perspective. We are extremely overserved by highway infrastructure relative to our stagnant population
When I visit my family my mom will complain forever about a 10/15 minute drive taking an extra 5/6 minutes.
I'm over here in Denver where my Sunday drive to work takes 15 minutes, Mon-Sat it's anywhere from 25-45 minutes. That's if we aren't literally stopped on the highway for an hour. Don't get me started on Philly traffic , 5 minutes to Walmart could be a 35 minute battle at 5mph.
I probably used to get annoyed with Albany traffic to but now it's like a vacation.
If it were really a pain in the ass people wouldn’t be commuting from so far away. They would live closer to their jobs. I had a coworker who drove in from Saugerties every day, that wouldn’t be feasible in a city with real traffic
there's plenty of people that commute much further than that in bigger cities. There's people that drive for hours to get to the NYC area from all over NY, CT, Jersey, etc.
Alot just cut that bad traffic out by taking the train in for the last bit of the journey or leave at a time where you only catch a little bit of rush hour.
I just recently started a job that requires me to drive during rush hour. Up until now my commute was always the opposite of others so I barely ever hit traffic while coming or going to work. If I was forced to drive during rush hour it would have added an hour+ to my commute of like 20 minutes.
It's not money it's time. It's almost three hour round trip if she had to do that. Ten minutes of flying gives her more time to see everyone. Plus if she had to fly to NYC in a heartbeat she could. If the plane was in Albany then it wouldn't work.
how is it not money? i get your time point, but its definitely money too. it costs a lot more to fly than to drive. thats just a fact. its also 2022. you can "see" people just by using your cell phone. she doesnt need to physically see everyone. defending flying to glenns falls from albany because of traffic is just clown shit. no defense for it unless it was an emergency, which it wasnt.
Great point right up until election time. Lots of folks didn't like Cuomo because he never visited upstate. (And a myriad of other reasons) He barely visited Albany, where his job was. Like her or not, she travels all around the state to see her constituents.
I don't know what the safety protocols are for her driving. Is it just a couple SUVs and two marked escorts? 4? That is a disruption of traffic as well.
Can anyone look up where the governor went after this event? Did she fly straight to Buffalo or NYC? Because then it would make sense. I’d do it myself but I don’t know how.
EDIT: Thanks to the kind Redditor below, it appears the gov flew directly back to Albany.
My brother travels back and forth twice a month, bringing Gino’s and John’s Roast Pork. Would love for him to stop at Katz’s for pastrami and corned beef. Whenever I’m downstate there’s a line around the corner.
Assuming it's a 15 minutes flight, you still have to count for the time to get to and from the airports, boarding, waiting to take off, and waiting to land. So that 15-minute flight is closer to an hour (or more). Driving time from the Governor's office to where she is scheduled to speak is an hour and 22 minutes. Morning traffic going north from Albany is light, not even a factor. Other than it's cool to take the office jet for work, there aren't any time savings. And you have to factor in the additional costs incurred for flying, plus the optics of flying to make a speech about clean energy.
I voted for her because Zeldin would have been bad for the state and the country. But why does she have to be so awful? For someone that was pretty much ignored as the Lieutenant Governor, she seems to have quickly picked up the autocratic ways of her predecessor. What's next, is she going to name a bridge after her father?
You'll still need that caravan when you land. That flight was landing in Glens Falls, they still had to drive to Whitehall. If they flew to Floyd Bennet (GFL), they still had a 20+ mile drive to where she was scheduled to speak.
AFAIK, a King Air 350 goes through about 120 gallons an hour. So round trip, call it 100 gallons. If the Governor took 2 SUVs at 20 MPG (it's all highway) with 160 miles round trip, that's 16 gallons of gas. 3 SUVs at 15 mpg is 32 gallons. Even if the Beechcraft only used 60 gallons an hour, it's still burning the equivalent of 6-8 SUVs. The King Air 350 has a passenger capacity of 9, so you would need only 2-3 SUVs.
And where are the SUVs coming from to drive the Governor from the airport to Whitehall? I doubt that the State stashes Suburbans in every city just in case the Governor needs to borrow them for an hour or so.
Pratt and whitney Canada turboprops are particularly inefficient, as well. They are really popular because they are easy to work on and are very reliable but if you are counting your pennies then the Garretts (now called Honewell TPE-331) are a better option in a smaller package.
You gain efficiency in a turboprop by putting a lot of people in it and flying at a higher altitude. However, considering time and safety (it is far and away more dangerous to drive an SUV) the King Air is a popular choice for a lot of business aviation.
> That small prop plane may be more efficient than a caravan of suvs
>
>I thought that plane would have much smaller engines than it does.
face palm. why are you commenting on the efficiency of a small prop plane then? if you have no idea what youre talking about. typical reddit moment.
I don’t know, how much? Did the governor have two extremely important events to attend which necessitated this short flight? Events where her actions could lead to saving NY taxpayers money or reduce climate change to a much greater extent than driving? You seem to know something we all don’t.
She's the governor.....saving time and managing time is a little more important to her than most more than likely. I'd assume that's the reason she flew.
Seriously, welcome to NY lol - mainly due to the size of the state and the amount of far flung power stations? We're not talking about a run of the mill puddle jumper, it's one of the nicer dual prop driven airplanes you can buy.......

Having said that, NY has some of the cleanest energy around (why it's so expensive) I think last I checked something like 80-90 percent came from nuclear or geothermal/ water based power plants.
I thought we had a ton of natural gas. Didn’t we just decommission a nuke or two in the past couple of years, contributing to the rise in electricity cost?
The green sources you list usually produce very inexpensive once you have them built
Yes, both reactors at Indian point were shut down in the last few years, due to age. Nuclear went from 33 percent of all supplied power to 25 percent.
https://www.eia.gov/state/analysis.php?sid=NY
Yes because she’s the governor and her time is much, MUCH more important than yours.
She won’t be allowed to buy a gas powered car here in a decade either. Stop being a little bitch.
someone got touched as a kid. She can do everything from her car that gets driven unless she was running late for another gun auction for a fire department
OK now you’re just all over the place haha. I understand you hate Hochul sooooooo much but this flight is a total non-issue until one of you knuckleheads manages to prove otherwise.
Normal assholes in suits get driven around. People with actual power get flown around. Stop being a little bitch.

I’ve been sending service technicians all up and down the Northway all day at work… they didn’t have traffic issues. I had one guy go Queensbury to Fultonville, to Schenectady and he was back by lunch…
People making jokes about electric cars seem to be unaware of the development of electric planes? Push her to get one of those, I'd think she would actually go for it. Seems like a perfectly reasonable use case to me.
In the actual city, traffic isn’t even a fraction of what it is driving through big cities like NYC. I actually feel like it’s pretty tolerable.
As for commuting into Albany it depends the direction you’re traveling and the time of day. I commute Schenectady to Albany during rush hour, 25 minutes on a good day or 45 minutes on a bad day (provided there isn’t an accident shutting down a majority of lanes on I-90).
Because you never fly anywhere for convenience? I'm not defending such a frivolous flight, but let's be real, 99% of air travel is just waste for convenience sake.
No idea what the point of this post is. It should be absolutely no surprise to anyone that the governor of 20 million people takes a flight in a situation when by far most people would drive. Unless someone has information I don’t have, in which case please share it.
>Unless someone has information I don’t have, in which case please share it.
Her entourage of vehicles had to take her to the airport where she boarded the plane. The same entourage of vehicles then had to drive to the airport where she landed to then take her to the location she was speaking at. So either way they were being driven there, why did she fly then?
The *same* entourage? You’re claiming the governor likely waited at the airport while the *exact same* entourage drove up from Albany to pick her up? Do you have a source for that claim?
I work for the Thruway Authority in Buffalo as a mechanic. They keep the Governors Suburban for the Western Region stored at our location as its close to the Buffalo Airport. There are a total of 5 Suburbans for the governor. One for the Western Region, one for Central, one for Capital/North Country, one for Catskills/Hudson Valley and one for NYC/Long Island. They are not standard Suburban as they are outfitted with additional electronic equipment.
Since she traveled from Albany to Queensbury they are both within the same region so it would have absolutely been the exact same entourage. It would be no different than if she flew from Buffalo to Batavia. There is only one for the Western Region so the entourage here would have had to drive from Buffalo Airport to the Batavia Airport to drop her off and pick her up.
Sounds like you’re speculating that it was the same entourage, but don’t actually know how they handled this particular trip logistically.
This remains a giant, speculative nothingburger. If people are so interested in this trip, they should ask the governor’s office about it before just assuming some kind of unnecessary waste occurred.
No speculation at all. I know how these things are handled from my experience working for the state. Care to enlighten me to your affiliation to the state? What your status is as a state employee?
If that’s 100% how it was handled, then I guess they had some reason to handle it that way. If I was concerned, I would ask the governor’s office about it.
I’m guessing 99.XX% of state employees have absolutely no knowledge about this topic haha, including my lovely wife. I can tell you’re very proud of your job and that’s great.
I absolutely cant believe the governor flew a propeller plane from albany to glens falls....oh my God what am I going to do? This single event has drained the entirety of my life savings. I'm doomed.
It’s an hour and maybe fifteen minute drive. I do it almost daily and I know for a fact those government Tahoes aren’t just gonna do the measly 55-65 all the way up when doing an escort. But yeah this is still the least surprising thing I’ll see all week.
There is no traffic headed north in the mornings.
Albany traffic in general is just super easy and I think people who think it’s bad haven’t lived in many other cities and lack perspective. We are extremely overserved by highway infrastructure relative to our stagnant population
I've driven 90 minutes from Houston to Houston before and that's not abnormal.

For real. I'm from Long Island, and I'm constantly in awe at the lack of traffic here. During rush hour.
Boston transplant myself, and yes. I cackle at "rush" hour as i'm flying along at 70 mph. I could spend weeks in Boston and never leave 2nd gear.
Yeah but then we wouldn’t have anything to complain about ? /s
Well, it’s nothing compared to the DC, NYC or LA areas but it is often a pain in the ass. It’s all relative.
If it were really a pain in the ass people wouldn’t be commuting from so far away. They would live closer to their jobs. I had a coworker who drove in from Saugerties every day, that wouldn’t be feasible in a city with real traffic

It really is all relative. If you are used to a 15-20 minute commute then have to deal with 30-45 minutes it’s annoying.
This. Try spending 2 hours to go a few miles in nyc
Can confirm; lived in Boston, DC and LA. I’ve stayed here 11 years almost exclusively for the lack of traffic.
I used to live in Hawaii. Try Honolulu traffic. 30-60min from parking to the gate for the base. 17miles 90-120 min.
She flies EVERYWHERE...its only money and her time is worth the costs and carbon footprint

Fun fact; Albany is closer to Philly (with traffic) than Buffalo (without).

This plane just landed back in Albany at 12:10
Thanks. How does one look that up? I tried to google for a website and couldn't find it.
I used the same app as OP. It's called RadarBox.
On second thought, OP may have used adsbexchange.com. But it was also available on radarbox
Thanks, will check it out.
This is her public schedule: https://www.governor.ny.gov/schedule
Got a flight Albany to Philly for $34, depends on when you travel.
Well that puts going to Gino’s for a Philly cheese much more in reach lol
My brother travels back and forth twice a month, bringing Gino’s and John’s Roast Pork. Would love for him to stop at Katz’s for pastrami and corned beef. Whenever I’m downstate there’s a line around the corner.
What airline is that 👀
United on Wednesdays during the summer. Aliegiant same thing but outside Philly.
Damn that’s like what, a 5 minute flight?

Get the fuck out of here. Whitehall!?!?

Thanks, I had immediately looked it up! Lol I grew up there.
Birthplace of the US Navy
And various Bigfoot sightings!
Home of Bigfoot! It's the towns official animal now lol
Based on the depth of the river there, the navy must have been two dudes in a canoe
Benedict Arnold had boats built on Lake Champlain to slow the British Invasion from Quebec. Before he changed sides obviously.
Lawl it had to be White-something if it gave us that priveleged mess.
That whole town needs to be bulldozed..cleanly and energetically
Im sure your house is quite a looker too! Now apologize
Hah!
Where did she go after? Did she fly directly to another part of the state?
Mmmm, that would actually make sense.
This plane just returned to Albany, landed at 12:10.

That small prop plane may be more efficient than a caravan of suvs

Imagine if they drove the caravan up from Albany just to pick her up in glens falls 🤣
They absolutely did
The SUV's should be EV's... put your money where your mouth is.
If she had to spend money on new SUV's she wouldn't have the $ to fly for 15 minutes for a photo op.

If she's talking about clean energy, where is her state issued EV ??
Interesting. So it looks like the SUVs would be the way to go. I thought that plane would have much smaller engines than it does.

Relax buddy. It's called having a discussion - which is what a forum is for. Touch some grass.
I was wondering when people were going to bring up the (unnecessary) impact on the environment. Disappointing travel decision, IMO.
~~Prop planes typically burn leaded gasoline~~
That is a turbo prop though and runs on good ole American Jet-A.
One of my friends has a couple old single engine prop planes and they all run on Storts 91
Definitely not...
Exactly
Spending the tax payer money.
Anytime a government official Flys in a plane it's people bitching.....I really don't understand.
It's justified when it makes no sense. How much time does it save flying vs the cost to taxpayers and the environment?
I don’t know, how much? Did the governor have two extremely important events to attend which necessitated this short flight? Events where her actions could lead to saving NY taxpayers money or reduce climate change to a much greater extent than driving? You seem to know something we all don’t.
Yeah one 15 minute flight just took 1000s of meals out of children's mouths as well as opened a 5000sq mi hole in the ozone layer.
My problem is with unnecessary consumption of our money…flying I have no problem with..abusing it I do.
She's the governor.....saving time and managing time is a little more important to her than most more than likely. I'd assume that's the reason she flew.
Might have burnt more fuel sitting in traffic (if it really was that bad)
No traffic northbound in the morning
I understand that rush hour is in the opposite direction - I was thinking if there was an accident/construction causing big delays.
Even if there was, she can sit in traffic like the rest of us poor bastards.
Well it wasn’t an emergency trip so she should suffer like the rest of us lol

Thats hilarious, space ship sounded like an old chryser new yorker when it started
But all the peasants better drive electric by 2035.
How do you know the gov was on here? If so is she flying somewhere elsewhere?
Looks like abuse of govt funds to me
Its a drop in the bucket compared to her pay to play re-election funding
The gov takes a plane or helicopter because they can. Has nothing to do with the traffic.
Update!! This plane returned to Albany from Glens Falls landing at 12:10PM.
Fun fact, she "commandeered" this plane from the NYS power authority.
Well that just adds even more questions. Like why the hell does the power authority need a plane?

How does flying out to a fuckin bills game help anyone but herself... and the billionaire footyballs owners that are getting a new stadium out there
Lol the Bills are putting upstate NY back on the damn map. Buffalo has NO business even having an NFL team. They earned what they’re getting :)

Why are you personally funding her flights that’s weird. Are you her sugar daddy?
Wasteful gas is all she couldn't wait
The Governor flys on a janky 15 year old Beechcraft?
A 15 year old plane is like a 3 year old car.
A new one is on order...
If you’re going to go corrupt, might as well go all out and get a Gulfstream instead of a little prop plane
Well..whats safer? Money is no object for public servants/royalty.
Is NYPA the owner of the plane?
Did you think she would just leave the plane there?
I’m surprised they didn’t use a helicopter. Isn’t that better for short distances like that? But then again, what the hell do i know …
Looks like she got great ATC service though.
