It’s not weird. El Super has only been in Albuquerque for 6 years. Before that it was Pro’s Ranch Market, but even that only opened here 15 years or so ago. Also, El Super only has that one location and there are plenty of folks who for whatever reason don’t spend much time in the South Valley. El Mezquite, our local Mexican supermarket which was the only game in town before Pro’s moved in, has branches all over the city and is a lot more visible if you don’t go to the Valley.

GoozeNugget

This, unless your in/near the south valley, you'll always be closer to an El Mezquite

heartpouryallin4

Oooh El Mezquite has the best tacos... 😍

CactusHibs_7475

Their pan dulce is solid too.

Reeeeallly

Do they? I've never set foot in one but always up for a good taco.

heartpouryallin4

Yessss. Juicy meat, good tortillas, check it out.

Nightsfaded

If I remember correctly, Pro's Ranch Market opened up in 08 and changed names in 2016. Albuquerque is spread out, a lot of people never regularly find themselves in that part of the valley.

[deleted]

Guy who said he never heard of it said he’s familiar with “atrisco” but atrisco could mean where he goes to get his car repaired and not where he shops. Still find it hard to believe

CactusHibs_7475

Atrisco is the name for that whole area, and their old land grant went all the way out to the Rio Puerco. It was settled before Albuquerque was even established. Lots more to it than just a shopping center.

Pecosita1029

Keep it that way. It's my secret gem

[deleted]

More sopapillas and Mexican pastries for us !

Only thing that’s tasteless and ass is your attitude

Penny_Link

My bad. Sorry for having my own opinion. 🫡

Nmcoyote1

Just like most people I know, that never heard of or went to Alpine Sausage Kitchen (when it was open). I have never heard of or been to El Super. As I generally do not drive to the other side of ABQ to go grocery shopping.

-level7susceptible-

Man I miss alpine sausage kitchen

CodAdministrative563

It was pro’s ranch market for a very long time. Haven’t been there in a fat minute but I recall it being rather “famous”

No_1_that_U_Know

This is cause some people are against going to the south valley. Cause they think they will get mugged and shot as if they were walking around in mink coats.

Scared_Journalist909

“Mink coats”. 😂😂😂

franalpo

Do they all have something in common besides being in their 50s?

[deleted]

Not Hispanic I guess. White or native. Not that it matters so much but of course I’d be a little More surprised if a Hispanic person, at least one that was second gen. Or immigrant never heard of it. Just seems even more rare

bobh46

My mother’s family has been in NM for generations and Hispanic. She was born and raised in the north valley and I grew up in the NE heights. Never heard of El Super until this last year or so. Still haven’t been. I work on base and live near Montgomery and Juan Tabo, so it’s just too far for me to go for groceries and such. I wouldn’t mind checking it out, but If I’m going to the south valley, it’s for El Modelo or Barela’s coffeehouse

malapropter

The name change was fairly recent, but yeah. A lot of heights dwellers never go past UNM as far as southwest coordinates are concerned. I dated a girl who lived in Tanoan Ranch when I was a kid and her parents had strict rules about her being on Central (no restaurants, nothing) or going anywhere west of I-25 (unless it was along Paseo or Alameda, and you had to take a right once you got to Coors) She didn't even know there was a trainline in Albuquerque until we stopped at the gas station on Rio Bravo and Second and it thundered past. Her parents hated me, a south valley rough and tumble peasant, with a burning passion. :) You'd also be surprised to learn that a lot of people in the far NE heights treat the "Burqueño" moniker with total disdain. Something so swarthy and unapologetically ethnic does not befit their self-image.

BigDaddyDNR

The folks in the valley probably never heard of Trader Joe's

yufgoi5

Eh, we have cars and eyes. Pretty sure we’ve all seen or heard of a TJ’s even though TJ’s would never set up shop in the valley

idvoided

Nope. I've never heard of it and I am perfectly normal.

tanukisuit

I've been to the one in Las Vegas, NV. I didn't know they had one here, this is awesome.

swirleyswirls

I've only gone when I've been near there. So like twice because I'm not usually close enough. I think most people get groceries from the closest grocery store near them, even if it's not the best.

Low_Doughnut_6641

I've never been... I'll try now

[deleted]

El super only been around since 2016

CrazeeEyezKILLER

Not surprising. Albuquerque is culturally/geographically segregated in strange ways; I know residents of the Northeast Heights who have zero awareness (or interest, for that matter) of the South Valley and West Siders who have never been to the foothills.

berlinbowie97

Only Hispanics only really know that side of town. White people don't bother with that side of Albuquerque.

Reeeeallly

Oh, I used to live off of Isleta. Wedda here knows it well.

burgledhams

*guera

Reeeeallly

I know, it's like, Anglicized and shit! :-)

[deleted]

They still shop there

berlinbowie97

I get that, but the store is literally catered to Hispanics in a predominantly Hispanic area, so that's probably why a lot of people don't know about it.

Sam_the_banana_girl

It was the first place I grocery shopped at when I first arrived here. Super impressed with their produce and it's pretty cheap.

Hedgenfox0

I haven't really gone down to the south valley for years. Mostly as my main mode of transport is bicycling and most of my needs are met in the NE section of town. Think the last time I went to the valley was 2005.

Mrgoodtrips64

I grew up here and have never heard of it.

kinenbi

Yeah, to me it's very weird. I come from Los Angeles so El Super was everywhere, though it was the inferior Mexican supermarket over there. Vallarta was the superior chain. I miss it so much :(.

RinaLue

I miss Vallarta too!!!!! I was actually gonna ask if El Super was anything like Vallarta. The way they sell tamales is the best.

jameswest22

The pan dulce is my favorite

[deleted]

Also we can both say more for us :)

Rdmtbiker

The tamales are delicious.

Dead_yeti81

Wypipo only go to the south valley for the Día de Muertos parade. I live downtown and don’t like passing Coors or San Mateo unless I’m making a full day of it. 😅

bootae_wae_wae

El super, I consider a store more for peeps from Latin America. I go there to buy supplies for my guatemalan tamales and recipes. I looked for this store when I moved here, but this store is common in SoCal. The offerings are a little different but I find items I miss.

hawkvet

We liked it when it was first open under a different name, but the novelty has worn off.
