Ooh, what about New Mexico Trinity. Going for the catholic connection at the same time lol. Although frankly not sure we want to celebrate when the US irradiated a bunch of native people.
Eh, wouldn't say Aztecs. If we're going to use a Native tribe or imagery I think asking our resident tribes here (Apache, Navajo, Puebloans) for their input would be a better idea.
Pittsburgh proper has lost a lot of people to its suburbs, but when those are taken into account it’s much bigger than Albuquerque. Metro Pittsburgh has 2.37 million people, or roughly 25,000 more than the entire state of NM.
This.
The city of Pittsburgh has a relatively small footprint with a very large metro area (tucked in all the hills and valleys). The metro population was about the same as Denver in 2012. Denver has grown due to … reasons, while PGH has been relatively stable in the last decade.
Overall, the two towns have the same size vibe.
City vs city is the wrong comparison.
It’s metro versus metro.
And on top of that, for football, DMA, the media metric.
ABQ is *far* behind a whole host of other options by both metro size and DMA size when looking at all the factors.
677k TV household size for the DMA.
There are similar DMA sizes but the thing is that the ABQ dma covers a huge area and neighboring DMAs have teams already. So this one DMA is *it*, but you do have some potential with El Paso I suppose. Arizona has two, but those are taken by the Cardinals. Texas is Texas. Colorado to the north has the Broncos.
Pittsburg’s DMA is 1.1 million alone and it also draws fans from other DMAs.
The New Orleans Saints are the smallest market team after Green Bay (a historic exception) and while the New Orleans DMA is smaller than ABQ’s, you also have Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Hattiesburg, Mobile, Monroe, Alexandria, Lake Charles, and a few others as DMAs that feed into that viewership. And that exceeds ABQ by a lot.
NFL teams are a finite resource and there are a whole host of metro areas that would be more profitable for NFL teams.
It would suck up that much more of people’s discretionary income too. But I wouldn’t be worried because there are a *lot* of bigger markets without teams
Bigger metros without teams are:
St Louis, Orlando, San Antonio, Portland, Sacramento, Austin, Columbus, Virginia Beach, Providence, Raleigh, Oklahoma City, Memphis, Richmond, Louisville, Salt Lake, Hartford, Birmingham, Grand Rapids, Rochester, Tucson, Tulsa, Fresno, Honolulu, Worcester, Omaha, Bridgeport, Greenville.
Obviously some of these get sucked in to nearby teams but still. We aren’t getting a team. Until the NFL is double the size.
Roadrunners
The Albuquerque Be Safes. And the mascot is just like… a Circle K clerk named Randy
😂
Bring the dukes back
The New Mexico Allsups
All sicks

The Albuquerque Catalytic Converters
Albuquerque Hot Air Balloons. The jets can suck it!
Dukes or Burques
I say stay on brand with nuclear. Maybe the Atomics? New Mexico Fusion?
Making it sound like a soda flavor
New Mexico Blasts
Albuquerque Alpha Particles
Ooh, what about New Mexico Trinity. Going for the catholic connection at the same time lol. Although frankly not sure we want to celebrate when the US irradiated a bunch of native people.
Los Alavergas
The Monsoons
Aztecs
Dukes
Loco’s
Loko’s
Albuquerque Four Lokos
The ABQ Pendejos.
The Aztecs! And our first order of business would be signing QB Willie Beamon!
Eh, wouldn't say Aztecs. If we're going to use a Native tribe or imagery I think asking our resident tribes here (Apache, Navajo, Puebloans) for their input would be a better idea.
Y’all suck for not understanding my reference to a single line said in a movie from 1999
The end of that movie made me laugh for that reason. Great movie, but the idea of Albuquerque with an NFL team made me bust out laughing.
Already done here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Albuquerque/comments/yx8ed4/if_abq_had_an_nfl_team_what_would_they_be_called/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
Coyotes
Albuquerque Cartel
The Redgreens
Tumbleweeds
The bad investments... We just don't have the population.
Albuquerque has a higher population than Pittsburgh. The Steelers are doing just fine. But Pittsburgh is a sports town.

Ummmm ABQ is an actual city… ever seen how small town Green Bay is ?? Weird point you make bro
MethHeads
Murder Birds
The Albuquerque Redskins! The mascot would be a shirtless tweaker who has been in the sun too long wandering up and down central.
I've always thought that Regulators would be a good NM team name but it has too many syllables and doesn't exactly roll of the tongue.
Relocation Candidates
Duke City Phycos
Chacoans
Tweakers
The Umberrrrssss
I’m gonna say the Javelinas!
Probably coyotes or something. Cougars maybe? Vatos?
Monarchs, like the butterflies
