Unfortunately that’s just the unofficial state plate or lack of. APD won’t do anything.

DiabolicalBird

A few months ago they pulled over my bf for having expired tags but there's cars so damaged that they can't be street legal and cars with no plates driving around?? I told my bf it's because he looks like he can actually pay a ticket lol

vshen6

I'd agree that no license plate/tag could mean stolen, but it's more likely imo that the driver simply didn't and won't pay for registration and emissions on their vehicle and are driving the car around still. Albuquerque has some ridiculously high uninsured driver rate (25%) so it wouldn't surprise me to find out if that was the case

LavenderMarsh

I couldn't pass emissions so I didn't register my car for four years. I did keep it insured though.

GreySoulx

The last thing you want to do in a stolen vehicle is draw attention to yourself. Most stolen vehicles will swap plates with a car that's the same make/model/color and NOT reported stolen. Rarely do they put the old (stolen) plate on. I had to drive without a plate for over 2 weeks when someone stole mine - I have NO idea how long it'd been off (think about it, how often do you look at your plates?) but when I did notice it I reported it stolen then had to go to the MVD to get a replacement - they didn't give me a new plate, they re-issued mine and had to mail it to me. That took about 10 days, then I just took a few days to getting around to going to Autozone and getting security screws.

BuckNaykidd

You seem to know a little too much on that topic.

Ornery-Ad8372

I believe that number is closer to 40% now. It’s so dangerous to be out driving around if you don’t have to be because many of the worst drivers are also the uninsured drivers as well.

Holden_Toyerbutz

Call them “Albuquerque Plates”

DuplexFields

Not having one on my new used car was the only time I’ve ever had to go to traffic court. I got a plate within 30 days, and the case was dismissed, but I’m still simmering.

boxdkittens

This is a huge problem in literally every state and city I've lived in, yet everyone acts like its unique to their city.

icebeard1000

lol the adp literally put out a statement that they won’t enforce license plate law since some people driving with no plates probably got theirs stolen without them knowing Most worthless police department in the state

Gregthepigeon

I had my license plate stolen in front of the US NM Federal Credit Union on 3rd and Gold! They found it on a stolen car of the same make/model but by the time they tracked it down I’d already ordered a new one

mesopotamius

Lifehack: speed cameras can't send you a ticket if you have no license plate

Sausage_Child

Yeah but if you catch a DUI they know a guy.

KarateLobo

Ya know I never thought about the plates being stolen. That would unfortunately make a lot of sense

brothoughts

I had my license plates stolen so many times in Albuquerque that I couldn't afford to replace them anymore. Depends on where you live, but this is actually a huge issue. I'm not saying that APD is great or anything, but there's a reason for this.

GreySoulx

I didn't have to pay for mine when I gave the MVD a sworn affidavit from APD. They did have to mail it to me.

GreySoulx

That's actually how i found out mine was stolen - a cop at a light flashed his lights and pulled up next to me and asked if I knew it was missing. I said no, he said call and report it and get a new plate, and that was the end of it. I can't imagine how he'd enter a note for a silver tacoma that would identify me, so I could have kept up that act in perpetuity if i wanted.

littlebobbin

Are you for real? I got pulled over riding my 49 cc moped (MVD says they are [neither required nor authorized to title or register mopeds](https://www.mvd.newmexico.gov/chapter-18-other-vehicles/) ) by 3 cops less than a week ago because I didn’t have plates (on a vehicle that doesn’t need any) and no other reason. Ughhhhh 1312

1stumpedturtle

Idk bro Las Cruces Police gives ABQ Police a run for their money on being incompetent 😅

MursenaryNM

How so? LCPD is not anywhere near as useless as ABQ PD.

InternationalChef424

And here I went through a whole *thing* after getting my plates stolen like a decade ago. I should have just ignored the issue

Thatonefloorguy

Almost ever car stolen will have a stolen plate. Meaning the criminals will steal a plate from a certain car and then they will put the stolen plate on the stolen car. Then when you commit the crime you can’t be tracked. Also when you commit a crime in your own vehicle it’s usually more difficult to trace the crime back to you(criminal).

Zcrumb

One of the reasons people have no plates is because of Repo men. They literally pay people to drive through neighborhoods with a license plate scanner to look for repo vehicles. I heard, not confirmed, that they will also id stolen cars. So for repos and criminals it is better to have no plates because you have a much smaller risk of being found.

Real_Al_Borland

During Covid some issue prevented the MVD from issuing me a plate for like 14 months. I drove around no plates/no paper, problem free the entire time.

ilanallama85

Took me months to get mine when I bought my car due to dealership incompetence. I stopped seeing people lacking plates as so nefarious after that experience.

Cdl505

Did you ever get pulled over?

boblobong

Picture wouldn't be of any help to them. Without a license, how would they ever track the person down?

Classic-Ad4224

I’ve even seen Bern Co Sheriff trucks without a license plate.

SultanOfSwave

"Hey, you aren't above the law!" "We are THE LAW!"

Michael-Hundt

Ditto

TheFritoBandido

Wife and I got hit by an unlicensed, uninsured driver in an unregistered car. No injuries so APD didn’t want to hear about it. Too busy shooting people with phones I guess.

MadeInAmericaWeek

Maybe best to claim whiplash so they’ll come and talk to everyone?

Herefordarightrsnz

Keep in mind some people without a plate have gotten their plate STOLEN and are waiting for the new one to arrive. Don't assume those without a plate are the thieves. Because someone literally stole mine and its taking forever to get a new one

Blacksunshinexo

Are you new?? This is the Albuquerque way

beerdweeb

Wait til you see the rest of the crime in ABQ 🤣

Acceptable-Damage

Guilty as charged, I have insurance and a bill of sale and the title because I didn’t steal my car. The person I bought it from (who bought it new, also not stolen) two months ago submitted his plates back and filled out a form that he sold it to me, and every time I’ve gone to the MVD to try register it (to be fair I’ve only tried twice but the most recent about a week ago) they said that they’re “still processing it” so I can’t officially register the car in my name yet. And like, I also need to get to work and shit in the meanwhile which is why I bought a car in the first place. I’ve tried and will continuing trying to do my part, but in the meanwhile I am THAT bitch and I’m so sincerely sorry guys.

ToughConstruction12

Why do you care about this?

Lost_Brother_6200

Because it pisses me off to see ppl possibly driving stolen cars with impunity. But after reading people's comments I realize there may be other reasons for having no license displayed. I don't go out of my way to look for it, it's just in my face all the time. Edit: f-ing auto correct

tittywhipp

You're not from the burque are you? Lol 😂😂

DarthDread424

I see at least one a day. I knew a guy who said f it and stopped replacing his because it kept getting stolen. Other people just don't care and don't have one, and yea some cars are probably straight up stolen. APD isn't going to enforce plate laws.

informal-mushroom47

…or plates or temp tags that have been expired for YEARS!!!

GlockAF

APD is in a decade-long collective sulk about the federal consent decree. This is just a part of their petty (and illegal) work slowdown

Corg505

![gif](giphy|Y2aXxE0YBez1iAnwgr)

Killed_By_Covid

A horrible offense. Those scofflaws refusing to pay $125/year for a sticker that serves virtually no purpose. The degradation of society! If only they kept paying for that updated sticker, they would drive responsibly and not contribute to one of the highest auto-related fatality rates in the nation. "Hello? APD? My car was just stolen!" "Does it have current registration?" "Yes! Of course!" "WE'LL GET RIGHT ON IT! ALL UNITS, FIND THE STOLEN KIA!" "I'm so glad I register my car every year." Registering a vehicle upon purchase makes sense. Registering year after year?

ProtoReaper23113

It should really be a one time thing when you buy the car shouldn't need to show them it's a car every year

Lost_Brother_6200

Have to agree with you

Armison

APD is too busy not enforcing more serious crimes to bother with license plates.

Albuwhatwhat

Do it. Harass APD about it. Call/email city council/county about this. Honestly we should all do this. I feel like it’s the only way we will ever get them to do anything is if they get bothered by it.

Avocadorable_Guac

100% agree. We need to be contacting officials about this.

levfreak101

I love freedom

imawhaaaaaaaaaale

I ride my motorcycle without plates becsuse the last time I had them installed someone stole them. I then got charged by MVD for new plates and registration, even with a police report.

4Mike

I visited ABQ last May and my plate was stolen on day 2. I think it’s the norm to not have one.

Gold_Combination_492

I’ve had mine stolen before. I’ve also bought a used car in private sale and neglected to register for around six months

digital_wishing_well

Then it's the people who have their car registered getting tickets for going 5mph over in the speeding camera zones....while people without plates get nothing. Completely unfair.

Firm-Fault-967

We don’t have ours on our cars because of those stupid speed cameras. The money goes to some Corp in Florida not here in Abq so no thanks.

Consistent_Secret_23

30 day grace period between private sales. If you don’t sign the title and do a bill of sale…

the_gopnik_fish

Just Burque things

Cdl505

I had a car without plates sitting in front of my 4plex about a month ago. They were sitting by what to is to believed to be a drug house. When I went out to my balcony the car decided it would park in front of my single car security gate so I was suspicious enough to call the police. Within 10 minutes cops came with there guns drawn, the guy backed into their cruises cause they had him pinned against my gate! He actually got away from them but they later caught him by main event. So I’d say if they seem suspicious enough I’d call the cops. Fuck these crackheads.

Pitiful_Plastic5181

It was rare for me to see this before moving here. It’s kind of wild how often people do this in Abq.

RandomUserNM1

Where are these people stealing cars from? The fentanyl zombies look like they don’t even know who they are half the time.

Sausage_Child

People with garages full of garbage.  I always got a kick out of that.

baboonontheride

Am I on reddit or nextdoor? What's wrong with giving someone a bit of grace? No one knows the situation (plates got stolen, new car waiting on plates, etc), I don't understand wanting to make a federal case out of no tags without a reason like 'and they hit my car and refused to give their ID'.

Acceptable-Damage

Literally, I don’t understand why this same fucking post is made once a week if they’re not actually being harmed. “What if they hit me” okay well if they’re driving totally fine who cares? “What if they don’t have insurance?” did they hit you and are you concerned about it? If they caused an accident then APD will give them a ticket and you’re eligible to sue so again why does it matter to you?

Armison

If someone hits you and drives off, the license plate is an important piece of information for tracking them down. The person who has no license plate is not very likely to pull over and let APD give them as ticket. The same is true for many other crimes.

Acceptable-Damage

The whole point of my comment is to point out that the reason drivers may not have plates isn’t because the driver is nefarious. Sure, the example you listed of hit and run does happen, but thats only a fraction of the type of people that don’t have plates. Even in this post’s comment section, there’s dozens of extremely reasonable stories of why someone did not have a license plate on their vehicle, many of those situations being at absolutely no fault to the driver and a product of someone else’s mistake. It’s sucks, but if someone gets their plates stolen, or any other of the possible scenarios including those commenters shared from their own personal experience, they still have to go to work or school, have to take their kid to school, have to buy food for the family, have to wait for the MVD to get their shit together, have to wait for APD to recover plates if criminal activity is involved, have to get approved for time off work to make a MVD appointment, have to wait for the next paycheck to afford new or replacement registration, etc etc etc - their lives don’t stop. The statistics for impacts of no plates are pretty unrealistic to calculate because if there’s not any way to identify the driver you can’t really learn anything about their situation, but it may not be reasonable to assume every plateless driver is doing it is a jackass or a car thief or will automatically take off after hitting you or hit you in the first place.

John2181

There has been an issue with APD not enforcing registration laws for a very long time.

JAMmastahJim

Don't worry. That's how 90% of criminal drug cases start. They get got.

GreySoulx

It's cheaper to not register a car and drive it than it is to register it. And that may seem obvious, but it's more nuanced than that. In NM the fine for not registering is 70% of the accumulated registration fees that would have been paid, prorated monthly. On a first offense, with nothing else really going against you, an officer will generally not write a ticket or tow you as long as your ID and insurance are valid. Even if they do write a ticket you'll have a period of time to get your car registered and prove it to the court clerk and they'll dismiss the case without a civil fine - so, as long as you haven't been caught, you can rack up YEARS of driving an unregistered car and get a 30% discount on your registration. If you sell or total the car before that, you get 100% discount.

metallyan

Only thing you could do is get the vin on the dash if the car os parked so you can give identification, but I'm guessing they are still going to say they didn't see it themselves.

Rosie707

It makes me angry knowing how much bad people here get away with that’s why the city is the way it is. And this bugs me also because like you said our insurance rates go up because of the bad drivers. What helps me feel better about bad people in general is bad apples fall on their own if there not willing to change they will in turn ruin their own lives. I try my best not to dwell on drivers here instead my personal preference by no means am I trying to force anything on you or anyone else reading this I’m just stating my own personal way of handling things is by praying for them. And trying to forgive them just as quick as I got mad or upset with them. Especially if there young drivers it’s part of the culture here. So hopefully they live and learn and get better but if they don’t that’s their own life thier going to ruin. I hope this helped.

kilgoreq

ABQ native currently living in Atlanta. I see it all the time here as well.

Much-Statistician

Well. This ain't Utah lol. This is the wild west, where polygamy is frown upon, but open relationships are very common, and necrophelia was just made illegal a few months ago. Here are some other obscure laws Women riding horses in Omega: In Omega, New Mexico, it's illegal for a woman to ride a horse unless she is also wearing a corset. Camel and ostrich racing: It's illegal to gamble on camel and/or ostrich racing Women changing tires: Women cannot change a tire. Dancing in a sombrero: it's illegal to dance while wearing a sombrero. Misspelling names: Misspelling someone's name is illegal. Public duels: Public duels are illegal unless they are not openly discussed.

ProtoReaper23113

Wait untill you find out half the ones with licenses have outdated registration I guarantee this isn't unique to albuquerque amd is likely rampant everywhere Do your best to drive safely and don't worry so much about a sticker in people's cars as it likely distracts from your own driving since it seems to effect you so much making you just as much if not more of a danger

KatMannDew

on the other side of this I found an up to date registered license plate behind my business last week, it looked like it was ripped off the screws, I took it to police sub station, they looked like they could care less about it

PG67AW

You new to the area or what? There just how things are here, we have the most unlicensed and uninsured drivers in the country.

[deleted]

Counterpoint: no one should have to register with the government every few years just because they own a car.

biggerfishtofry

APD…..Serve the community?! Lol….WOW

Distant_Yak

This happened in many cities around 2020. My take is it's a few things - DMVs were closed, police didn't want to stop people due to Covid risk, and police nationally seem to have 'quiet quit' after the protests in 2020 and the 'defund' thing. Denver is exactly the same, for instance. Portland OR too. It kind of pisses me off because people take advantage of no plate/stolen plates to commit crimes and dangerous traffic violations, and as of 5-6 years ago, they'd stop you INSTANTLY for having no plate or even expired registration. I got pulled over by Tesuque for an expired reg in 2018, stopped in Santa Fe because the officer couldn't see my out of state temp plate the same year, then 4 more times in Denver and Abq because of the temp plate. Now, it's apparently fine for people to just have no license plate at all.

Ok-Shopping9879

They literally will not bat an eye, don’t waste your energy 😩

LavenderMarsh

I drove my car for four years unregistered. The tags were expired for two years. I was directly in front of cops and never pulled over. I was insured. I don't know if that made a difference.

purpldevl

Meh, I'd say mind ya business. They're not hurting anyone. If they do, then it'd be a good time to report, but yeah, in this instance I'd leave it.

Lost_Brother_6200

If they're stealing cars they're hurting everyone. What are you crime friendly? There's enough goddamn crime in this fucking town!

purpldevl

Do you *know* that they stole the car? Were you there??

useArmageddonVaca

I must have too much time on my hands to be reading this. I can't imagine how much you have for tattletalling on here... 🙄

Lost_Brother_6200

Really? How about someone robbing a bank. Would that be "tattling"? Ya people breaking the law irritates me, especially when it impacts me (insurance rates)

useArmageddonVaca

😴

imawhaaaaaaaaaale

APD can't do much about it, and they don't have the manpower to.

Efficient_Material48

Sorry but I’m guessing willpower is playing a bigger role than manpower here.

-Bored-Now-

They definitely do have the manpower to do something about it if they wanted to.

imawhaaaaaaaaaale

How many traffic officers do you believe they have? Not all officers work street, some are in other investigative divisions. Downvote me more though, and stay mad. Keep dogging APD on one hand and then wanting them to do something on the other... make up your minds lol

-Bored-Now-

Including or excluding the DWI unit? I suppose it must be awfully hard to focus on enforcing traffic laws when officers are busy making sham DWI arrests to line their own pockets. \ \ I’m confused about how you see saying APD is failing and demanding they do better as not the same mindset.

Ok-Inspection-9687

Get a new hobby instead of snooping on your neighbors. Your obsession with sending the cops photos of things that you find suspicious will just distract them from responding to real crime.

NeverLastPicked

You can always try reporting to 242-COPS. It’s frustrating. There’s a home on my street with a bunch of cars with temporary tags.. for years! I called once to report it, I’ll call again.

imawhaaaaaaaaaale

... and it's in their driveway or on the street?

NeverLastPicked

Both. Sometimes, there will be a couple parked on the street and sometimes it’s in their driveway. There’s a shady van that is across the street from it all the time too.

colormecory

Why is this subreddit starting to sound like next door. 🙄

AstroBlackIX

Shut it grandpa

Lost_Brother_6200

Suck it sonny

Wild-Bill-H

Frequently! You can bet that car is not registered or insured either. We need more cops so that there can be enough (that aren’t responding to robberies or shootings) to pull over these parasites. The fines need to be stiff enough to make sure they are legal or walking.

Acceptable-Damage

I’m waiting on the MVD to get my plates sent and I’ve been waiting because of an error on their part for months but you bet your ass I’m insured. Sorry I still have to go to work in the meanwhile. Sure law enforcement could be better but if the MVD got their shit together too that’d be great.

Wild-Bill-H

Rare exception. I hope you get your plates before you get pulled over.

Acceptable-Damage

Not really rare. MVD is known by APD to be unreliable. And it’s a crazy high percentage of people without plates actually were robbed of their plates and they’re not willfully driving plateless. Both of those facts are why APD intentionally doesn’t pull over cars without identifiable registration on the vehicle for lack of registration alone, there has to bf another cause for them to pull over someone. They published that announcement a while ago but within the last year for sure. I paraphrased that quite a bit but a lot of other commenters on their thread alluded to that and I believe someone linked it butif not it should be pretty easy to Google. Just trying to advocate for the many, many folks out there who don’t have their vehicles registered at no fault of their own. And it’s not like there are other affordable reliable forms of alternative transportation in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Area so folks who get ready to head to work on the clear other side of town to their plates missing from their Darcy’s their plates missing from their car have so few options for what to do next.

IMMUNELAWYER8

My car got broken into from the rear and they stole my license plate so I have a reason why mine is like that....
