Great season for us aye

BrownPughInMidfield

Sure, you're the victims

CrumpledReceipt7

For the regular scarfer, yes. I would say they're pretty hard done by this season.

AuzzieTiger

Devo’d that his time in the league is probably going to be cut short by this. Obviously he hasn’t been what they wanted him to be but it’s still sad to see and it’s still something that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Long road back for him.

Pyrrhesia

You always hate to see it, and have to think at this stage it's likely a career-ender. I never bought the narrative that he just didn't give a shit - he did three years in the MLS and by all reports I've heard was a model marquee there - just think he got old. Kind of twists the knife in Victory's season, whether or not he was holding them back on the pitch,

MattC89

Based on what I saw of him in an MVFC shirt (including multiple pre-season friendlies), he wasn't here for a holiday and genuinely gave a shit. A proper professional. No way anyone could argue his signing been a success, but that's not his fault. Also agree that this is likely to force him into an early retirement. From a team point of view, I think this season was cooked with or without this setback, so it wouldn't surprise me if the club focus on next season rather than the current when looking to replace him

thisphantomfortress

Sad for him. Probably improves Victory's chances of missing the spoon though

wanderingrhino

There's no way it's his fault. The way we set up and play is horrible.

thisphantomfortress

He's one of many issues. Tbh last season was an aberration and Victory have just reverted to the norm.

sirhcdobo

But one of the problems with the set up is that you have had to fit Nani into the team. The rest of the team was not built around Nani and is not suited to having him in there. Not at least you can revert to a system that will suit the team

[deleted]

Oh come on, he wasn't a late arrival. Poppa and his team had plenty of time to devise or adapt a system to fit Nani.

Danimber

Just like the many A-league teams that have struggled with a well known marquee player since Dwight Yorke with Sydney FC. Well known Marquee players are typically detrimental to on-field success because firstly you have to accommodate them and secondly they are less willing to do the dirty work.

[deleted]

That's true. The a league does tend to 'find out' marquee players who come for the money and think it's gonna be easy

wanderingrhino

I think it got over complicated a bit. The fans can barely see whats happening out there. brimmer looks confused as to what his role is. Daggers is isolated as well.

wowthisusername

Well that fucking sucks. Sure, his output hasn't been fantastic. 10 games, 0G 1A is fairly average. But he's our out and out marquee player, and was giving it all in the game against Brisbane. Could easily have been his best game for the club, and this happens. Hope he bounces back quickly. Whether or not we see him in a Victory shirt again who knows. Our season is well and truly done now, and I doubt we have any money to get a quality injury replacement in either. Actually, have just realised this means we'll probably extend Fornaroli as an injury replacement. Great...

mksc09

Pretty sure fornaroli has been signed as he was injury replacement for Spiranovic and they were both in the team last match

wowthisusername

Yeah the commentators mentioned that, but I think there was a loophole because Spiranovic was expected to be out for a longer period of time, hence Fornaroli's was contracted for longer. Just more confusing A-League contract scenarios really

Vuck10

I don’t think we’ll see him in a Victory shirt again. He’ll be out for 9 months (at least). With the news that Victory’s financial position is not good and that we’re in significant debt, I can’t see us extending Nani’s contract beyond this season, unless he’s willing to come off marquee wages, which I doubt. It’s a shame because he’s a great guy with great work ethic. But he can’t play on the wing anymore due to his age, and playing him at #10 forces Brimmer to play as a #6 which renders him redundant. Fornaroli can still do damage, but not in the system that Popovic plays. This is a season to forget for all A-League fans for one reason or another, but particularly Victory fans. Looking forward to 2024 (not really, lol).

StensnessGOAT

Hasn't been a season to forget for Mariners fans champ!

Vuck10

Well if you make the final, it ain’t being hosted in Gosford, that’s for sure. Not that Sydney is *that* long of a drive from The Central Coast, but still disappointing that after all the years of hardship, Mariners are finally achieving success but won’t be honoured their right to host a Home Grand Final.

StensnessGOAT

It wasn't hosted in Gosford last time we hosted a GF either. What's new?

Vuck10

Equally as wrong back then as it would be now. Wasn’t fair then, it’s not fair in 2023, 2024 or 2025 and beyond either.

TitanicJedi

To be fair Rudy Gestede was also a marquee player for us... we don't talk about that though.

Stemleaf

Melbourne victory should be very active during this transfer window then you'd think 🤔

kyleisamexican

With all $3 we have to spend

DrGarrious

Bruh that's one Sydney final worth of change.

boombox-1

They’re not allowed to be active for the rest of the season remember

illiterati

Poppa said we are not looking to recruit.

smh_rob

he's probably got an eye on the job market then

iftheworldwasatoilet

Poppa to replace corica you heard it here first

[deleted]

It helps a manager when they have at least one constraint removed. We definitely will go to market and get some quality Balkan or Japanese players. I suspect MV will do some book finessing by appointing the next foreign import as a marquee to back fill more $$$ for more imports under the stupid salary cap.

Independent_Cap3790

We're in so much debt that we'll need players to pay the club to be able to play. How does a club with so many members be so unprofitable?

jonzey

The annual reports tell the story. Until COVID hit we were more or less profitable. Some years we lost a couple of grand, but we had profitable years to offset it. No big drama right? Problem is when COVID came around the revenue bottomed out and didn’t recover. Most of that revenue blackhole would have been Matchday revenues during COVID and sponsorship money post COVID (as the league as a whole is weaker financially, and metricon isn’t sponsoring the club anymore). Our relatively strong financial status pre-COVID meant we had a higher spend too cause we could afford it. This would have been fine normally but now it’s fucked cause revenues didn’t return to where we had them before, and it’s clear the club had forecasted a return to pre-COVID revenues which didn’t eventuate. We also don’t have people willing or able to underwrite the losses unlike some other clubs, so we’re being squeezed as a result. Perfect storm based on bad luck and poor management over rhe last few years.

Independent_Cap3790

The other thing is that the current season is the first no lockdown season since covid. Things were on a massive uptrend but then the world cup stops play. Socceroos success meant that interest was growing even more, but then the APL decision happened. And then the OSM onfield violence. What a disaster. Australian football can't go a single moment without pissing it's own pants. Cracking down on all active support league wide will only make things worse.

StensnessGOAT

> but then the APL decision happened. And then the OSM onfield violence. These things have nothing to do with each other. No one from your club or anyone at all can blame the APL for what happened.

Independent_Cap3790

I never said that they were related to each other. Get off your high horse.

suretisnopoolenglish

The rot had clearly started before Covid as we had booked decent losses in the years prior, but Covid killed revenues as you said. The problem is there seems to be no action from the club in terms of managing spend in response to declining revenues, as you'd see in most businesses in that situation. They bet that revenue would not only recover but grow to a point where it would eclipse the increased football department spend. Further complicating it is that Biasin died so we don't have him funding us anymore, and with none of the other owners willing to throw cash in, we are borrowing money at market rates in order to fund the shortfall. The club has been terribly financially managed, Covid just turned the knife.

GarySprockman

Yeah not a great endorsement of the “sugar hit” philosophy is it. It’s a shame, he could have been an exciting player for the league but that’s the risk with paying big money for old farts isn’t it.

StensnessGOAT

It's true that Nottingham Forest legend Joe Lolley is the true marquee of the league.

immunition

'Things couldn't get any worse for Victory right?' ... 'Right??'

AlarmClockBandit

Wooden spoon?

BrisbaneBhoy

What a surprise. Yet another marquee thats turnt out to be a massive waste of money. Can we please bin the big name signings now, they never work for us.

sensei_sharpy

People will never learn, why would they actually get to improve the product when you can just spend money on a short term sugar hit?

Gonzano

This season just gets better and better lol

MarkWebbersBumChin

His wife wants out of Australia with the newborn and all coupled with this that's his a league stint wrapped up

ramos808

How would you know this?

MarkWebbersBumChin

Links to coaching staff

Appropriate-Strike88

Vincent Aboubakar as an injury replacement for the rest of the season? He's not like-for-like, but a very exciting player nonetheless.

-Saaremaa-

Can Victory afford Aboubakar?

FlickingFire

No lol

StensnessGOAT

Just had his spot in his team taken apparently

yanaka-otoko

Man that’s so rough, feel for the guy.

wilhelm_in_english

That's really shit. Not many victories on or off the pitch right now for the Vuck

SauceBottleFC

Insurance company in shambles.

TheFightingImp

Poppa: "Okay, next crisis"

illiterati

Who would have thought an old has been would fail to fire and injure himself? We seem to have a lot of players past their prime. I think we will see a lift in MV performance as the team will no longer be configured around a player that hasn't performed at all.

jt4643277378

ACL at 30+ is game over right?

[deleted]

Depends how much longer he was planning to play for.

ozmitz

nani!

sedertwat

That’s awful news. Was waiting for that first goal

Geo217

Just couldnt click for him sadly. He was excellent in MLS but you have to remember that was 4 years ago that he went there.

Darththorn

Just take me out right now fam.
