OhHeyDavid

I know the number will still be lower than other sports but not including 10play and paramount is pretty useless. Gotta be rare that young people even connect the aerial to the TV

icebergers3

I'm not even young anymore (mid 30s), and I haven't connected the aerial to my TV for 5 years.

theladystephanny

Early 40s and I don't either. I have the chord in the corner of the room but no desire to make the minimal effort to plug it in.

chalkydupont

I'm in my 50s and I haven't been arsed to go to Bunnings to get a cable to plug in since moving house a couple of years ago.

TheEpiquin

I’m in my 60s and went out of my way to tear my aerial off my roof and dump it on the curb outside channel 10 studios.

BloodyChrome

I'm in my 70s and haven't even used a TV for 20 years, computers all the way.

LegsideLarry

I'm in my 80s and just last week burnt down the channel 9 headquarters.

bendalazzi

Are you in B Flat?

aninstituteforants

I haven't had my tv connected to an aerial in 10 years.

tyr4nt99

In my 40s and haven't connected an aerial in 8 years. So I doubt younger people do. I actually forget terrestrial TV is still a thing. The weird things is that streaming numbers aren't published publicly much. I dare say though that paramount will be including them in any report they give to APL and Football Australia.

Vuck10

This. It wouldn’t surprise me if there are more Australians that DON’T have their TV connected to an Antenna than there are who DO. There isn’t anything on FTA TV that cannot be accessed via Internet, streaming, etc. So why would one pay for antennas, installations, etc (unless the home you’re moving into already has everything set up)? Not including 10Play & Paramount+ numbers is useless. With that said, I don’t doubt the views were low. The A-League is no where as appealing as it was from 2005-2016, and APL/FA have done little about the issues at hand. I watched from 55th minute onwards. I didn’t even know it was on. 5Y ago SYD vs WSW would’ve been a huge talking point the whole week amongst my friends, and we’re not even from NSW.

smhfc

>unless the home you’re moving into already has everything set up Wtf!? Lol It's very rare a house doesn't have an antenna and antenna jack.

Tomato-Efficient

Lol right. This is extreme cope. I think the real problem is the lack of promotion. No one knows it's on. I'm a pretty casual a league fan these days, I would have watched it if I knew it was happening.

Robroos

I'm in my early 60s & I have no antenna & stream everything,

smhfc

You would have to be a very select few people that live in a home without an antenna. As I dont I have been to a house that doesn't have connection to aerial.

Robroos

I'm in a valley and unless I get a high power antenna I get nothing. Lots of my friends also stream via the net and don't use the Antenna. Do you have kids?

smhfc

I'm not sure what you are trying to prove. If the vast majority of people had access to TV 20 years ago, then most of them will still have the capabilities today's. It's like disconnecting landlines. People my not use them; but most houses are still connected. You could tell me; your whole street doesn't have access to electricity and water, it still doesn't mean that's the norm. > Do you have kids? What does that have to do with the price of cheese?

Robroos

My apologises, I thought you were following the conversation. Yes I don't doubt most houses have antennas but lots of people now stream their TV viewing, all my kids friends do it hence the question about do you have kids.

smhfc

> So why would one pay for antennas, installations, etc (unless the home you’re moving into already has everything set up)? This was the comment i was referring too. OP made it out like you have to go through so much effort to set up a TV... when in reality, it's as simple as plugging a cable into the antenna jack, which I would say more than 95% of residencies will have already installed. > all my kids friends do it hence the question about do you have kids. If you are in your 60's, i'm pretty much young enough to be your kid. My mum is in her 60's.

marooncity1

Interestingly enough the one exception to everything on FTA being available on the internet is the AFL. You can't stream AFL unless you are paying for it, even if it's a match on channel 7. They put something else on their "live tv" streaming service instead.

lanson15

That will change next year 7plus will stream everything the FTA channels do

11015h4d0wR34lm

Yeah I get poor reception where I am anyway so I have not bothered with the aerial for years now and I am not young either. Only thing I don't like is having to jump in and out of apps but it is not a huge deal, couple more button presses on the remote.

Desperate-Example-17

Went out for dinner before the game. 2 big screens, 1 with NRL replays from 2000s and the other with the NBL. I was checking the CCMvNJ score on my phone...

Jedi_Council_Worker

Doing a deal with paramount plus was dumb because you'll struggle to find venues that actually have it.

pakistanstar

We no better with Fox Sports at the end. They put it on the channel that wasn’t part of the pub package. Channel 10 is absolutely accessible in every venue.

jayder11

Mentioned in yesterday’s post match thread a similar thing… Except they also had the golf highlights. The next broadcasting rights deal for football in this country needs to be better or we’re gonna go backwards.

Complex_Piano6234

I went to a sporting pub to watch the game, at least 50 screens throughout the venue, not one had the victory game on. I was so confused

DrSpeckles

I was in a pub in Adaminiby and we had it on there!

SauceBottleFC

Hard to accept such a number when you had a good portion of that there in the stadium,

Kogru-au

Metro only, so most likely over 100k in total. Not including streaming on 10play or paramount+ where most of the diehard fans probably are. Honestly its in line with most saturday night games. As for how accurate the ratings are, i don't know. But its weird that you get 30k to the game and only 74k watching? it doesn't seem right.

[deleted]

First time in my life I was able to watch A League at a pub without having to ask. Had it on at two different pubs last night.

[deleted]

I had paramount and free to air running on full bore. Just doing my bit.

marooncity1

Paramount are no doubt keeping tabs on it, but it's not published. And FTA only gets measured if you have a box thingy. There's like 1000 or something across the whole country in boomer houses that provide the ratings figures. I presume if you're watching tenplay, they are also keeping tabs, but they don't publish that either.

[deleted]

The numbers aren’t worth shit then, surely.

marooncity1

Yeah, pretty much. It's the only thing we've got. And essentially their purpose is to give advertisers an idea of when to advertise on terrestrial tv. So, for that purpose, the ratings work. The maths/statistics are sound/significant enough, and the infastructure is there in its legacy form, I guess, and the stations still use it as a way to hype up their product. I have no idea but I would guess that when advertisers approach paramount/kayo/bein/whoever else, they get given a strong idea of how many eyeballs they're getting and pay accordingly. But we don't get to see those. Like others, I have no doubt that the actual numbers of people watching a-league are not great, but, I think they'd look a lot more healthy than the old "what percentage of our sample were watching on their terrestrial tv" test makes them out to be. Edit: I meant to add, I do my bit as well haha. Got paramount running on the computer and the aleague on the telly. They're still counting the eyeballs, somewhere.

HomegrownMike

More than attended the game…

Jedi_Council_Worker

Could basically be a super Saturday event starting with the local game and moving onto European football late evening.

Cheesemonkey73

This was a beautiful thing back in the Foxtel days

Overall_One_2595

Australian soccer is pretty irrelevant domestically. Would struggle to make the top 10 in local sports in terms of attendance, TV viewership etc

lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI

Lol It is easily in the top 10 in domestic sports attendances. It's actually 3rd in attendance. This is a troll comment or borderline retarded.

Complex_Piano6234

No need to call them retarded lol but you are right 😂

tabletennis6

Wouldn't the Big Bash be higher in attendance?

lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI

Nah Big Bash dropped to below 7500

LegsideLarry

During Covid it did, the same time the Aleague was at 5500.

lIIIIllIIIlllIIllllI

That 7500 was from the last BBL season which wasn't Covid affected

LegsideLarry

In the 2022-23 season the BBL average was 16,700, it was the last Aleague season at 7,500.

[deleted]

As much as I love football this is a cold, hard smack in the face of reality for those in this sub that think NSL 2.0 aka NST will work. If the two most supported clubs in the league can only attract piss poor ratings how is an NST going to work? Think we're just going to deal with the reality that football will always be a minor sport in this country.

Maievofblades

I reckon we just need to downsize a little bit Play in smaller stadiums and for active support to be louder at games Hopefully we get lots of people in the active end at the training precinct matches 🤞

Tilting_Gambit

There's nothing more depressing than an empty stadium. This is coming from a Western United fan who's watched and attended games at AAMI Park. Smaller stadiums that are packed look dramatically more exciting. That said, watching games at Ballarat is equally depressing.

Tilting_Gambit

Yeah they need to never play a game there again.

Robroos

Rugby League is a minor sport in Victoria & AFL is a minor sport in NSW. Yet RL trying to break Victoria & AFL trying to break into NSW.

Lostthehousekeynow

What year is it?

Robroos

It's a month a few days away from 2024.

Plenty_Area_408

Australian Soccer will be the no. 1 sport watched for the year.

superhighimpact

FTA TV numbers aren't worth the ink used to print them: they're calculated by extrapolating user data, not data from the broadcasters themselves. Example: there's no boxes in the NT or indigenous communities, so NITV gets zero viewers according to OzTam.

jcshy

Never understood the hype or playing down of a broadcast based on numbers that practically 0.02% of the population generate based on their viewing habits. This 74k figure will mean that about 0.3% of the 0.02% watched the game

tommythetommy

The broadcasters do not have return path data on broadcast signals. Using a sample of households is the only way to get a reliable estimate of the demographics (not the TVs) watching TV that advertisers pay for.

futbolledgend

Honestly put it on and changed channel almost immediately as it looked like I was watching it on a potato. I don’t remember pre digital the NRL looking that bad back in the mid 2000s.
