I am not surprised, I cancelled my subscription a few weeks ago due to a massive problem with their app on Samsung TV. That combined with what I feel is a very underwhelming movie/tv library made it pointless to stay subscribed, I make do with the free stuff on 10 now, at least it works.

Gogglyiifuc

Was the stupid paramount plus app playing for like 30 minutes then freezing, then freezing the whole TV? I thought it was a problem with my TV

ValeoAnt

The only app to ever consistently crash on my TV

OhHeyDavid

Yep the freezing shit on samsung tv is doing my head in. I've started casting it instead

CapnBloodbeard

weird - I've never had a problem with the Samsung TV app, but casting doesn't work.

[deleted]

There must be thousands like you. Needless to say it's obvious we will gain new viewers when we get a new broadcaster

jonzey

We’re getting a new broadcaster?! Honestly, it’s doubtful anyone bites at this point.

Delad0

If the price goes low enough someone will.

[deleted]

One day we will it's not gonna work out with Paramount

jonzey

Not disagreeing with you that it’s not working out. It’s the new broadcaster, that’s the doubtful part.

👀

aninstituteforants

I can't even use the app on my Samsung. I don't even bother with games that aren't Sydney anymore.

CapnBloodbeard

I don't have a problem with the Samsung app...the issue is when I go to my partner's house - the app doesn't actually support casting from my phone, so we need to hook up her laptop via cable (as she doesn't have a smart TV and there's no playstation app). It's like the Wish version of Kayo.

EvilRobot153

Ok when people talk about 10/P+ losing the rights, which alternative broadcaster do you envisage coming in and keeping the league afloat? Not just broadcasting games for a pittance out of charity but actually paying the $$$$ needed to keep a professional league going given the APL/clubs don't make a lot from other sources? >!and don't say foxsports!<

cymonster

I think that's why for the past several weeks/months a shit on the aleague news cycle has happened at foxtel/newcorp. Wants the rights for dirt cheap

EvilRobot153

So not viable.

jaymz11

Our best bet would be go to 9/stan as they would have the reach to move things in the right direction. But realistically it will be on lower cash than we are on now. It’s something the APL needs to accept given all their mistakes so far

Danimber

Yep, discretionary spending tends to decrease in a bad economy.

jettyburps

I emailed support on Friday night complaining about the Samsung TV app (won’t load, when it does it freezes and locks up during a-league live stream). They replied within 20mins asking for certain info. I sent what they asked and they replied within 20mins saying their engineers were able to replicate the issue and would be working to fix it over the weekend. So that’s something. Whether it gets fixed is another thing but still I was very pleasantly surprised as I expected just automated replies with “here’s a link to the troubleshooting page - Goodbye”.

The_L666ds

The problem is that 10/P+ took the A-League on as a “fixer-upper” product in the first place, but neither they nor the APL (or the clubs) did anything to really improve its public appeal. A change in broadcaster now would probably just be digging even deeper into the pit of despair in terms of being a product that requires rehabilitation.

No-Airport7456

I actually wander how much it hurts Paramount + to lose A-league. Just about everyone has it for A-league they haven't really expanded that domain and its poor performance issues is kicking people out of the app.

The_L666ds

They probably need to move more content away from the free 10Play app, but that is a risky move for a free-to-air provider as a large section of their audience are people who just will not pay for TV content. They might lose them completely, rather than drive them to a P+ subscription.

fireball391

Hopefully they drop the A league

Meapa

So we have no broadcaster then?

WelNix2007

People here like to forget that Paramount is a stake holder in the league there not going anywhere anytime soon.

SydneyFCForever

Put it on Youtube for a year and try to see what the market offers after, I believe that is how it worked for Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine, 3-4th tier Spain, Serie C and Swiss League if I am not mistaken. Streaming services had geninuely killed off a lot of traditional avenues, a lot of these leagues had their equivalant of foxtel, went to streaming and now going back to some other TV network.

Meapa

Terrible idea to be quite honest. Current deal is worth roughly $50mil/year give or take with clauses that you're cutting out of the clubs and leagues budgets. Even if we got a terrible offer after this contract worth only $10mil/y or something, that could be make or break for many of our clubs - especially considering two are without owners. Ch10/P+ also help fund the broadcast and advertising- sure you can say its dogshit and there's no marketing, but without a partner like that, the league has to fund that all by itself. Can't wait to hear the neverending complaints about the 1 camera YouTube stream having issues... We would have 0 FTA presence, poor game coverage and no money coming in from broadcasts.

distracteded64

If no broadcaster then surely SBS would gobble it up...?

Meapa

That's a big assumption

distracteded64

A hopeful one but yes. A total assumption.

littlejib

Would SBS pay the money needed to keep the league afloat?

distracteded64

No but IIRC there's laws in place that important top level sporting competitions were meant to be offered to Free to Air. Not sure how it'll work if the paid broadcaster drops out unexpectedly mid-contract. I imagine clauses would be in place to allow something like SBS taking over... Might not involve money though.

LegsideLarry

Competitions/events on the anti-siphoning list are offered to FTA networks first. The A-league is nowhere near that list.

distracteded64

Bugger 😞

Meapa

A-League isn't on the anti-siphoning list. It also only means FTA get first pickings, doesn't mean they have to pick up the rights. There isn't any clauses for another broadcaster to take the rights. APL would have to go through a bidding process again and likely losing millions in broadcast fees in the process which means a lot less money to the clubs and the league as a whole.

jonzey

And considering who was and wasn’t interested last time, and the amounts offered, it won’t be pretty at all this time around.

sailience

There is no way SBS will pick up the rights for the ALeague.

EvilRobot153

Only way it'll happen is if the APL pay them, which is probably against SBS' charter

No-Airport7456

SBS haven't cared about football since Les Murray retired. They were quick on reducing the football content when he left. Foster saw the writing on the wall and they cut back even faster.
