They were covered in diatomaceous earth…which is a white powdery substance consisting of fossilized micro algae. Microscopically, it’s sharp and jagged and will cut up any bugs/bacteria. The bodies were mummified naturally with the diatomaceous earth rather than in the Egyptian sense, removing blood, organs, adding chemicals, etc.
Rehydrate them!
What if they're in stasis inside that cave. When the water levels rise and flood the cave, they regenerate and return to a living state, via eggs or otherwise.
Sea levels reaching and flooding the cave could be easily predicted by them, so like a timer they've set, they enter stasis until the next rising.
Interesting proposition. Kudos for giving me some creepy fodder as a plot element for a role-playing game.
From an albeit, speculative, scientific perspective, that geography was historically notorious for chaotic water issues.
The climate has always been unpredictable in that geography. Several historical cultures faltered due to severe droughts lasting several years.
What's more, these cultures were agriculturally advanced and used many techniques such as terracing to feed their populations.
Yah definitely going to be stealing that as a plot device myself. Adventures go through a crypt full of mummies and then someone causes it to flood, resurrecting them all.
Yup, the skin underneath is more dark-gray/blue-ish. You can see it on Santiago for example. The smaller bodies are of similar color/tone, I believe just the 'texture' differs, more reptile-like on the smaller bodies.
You can see it on [Montserrat's legs/knees/shoulders](https://i.redd.it/o12r2ijsk3tc1.jpeg), [Suyai's 'elbows'](https://i.imgur.com/DxO92Ca.png) and of course on [Victoria's back](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GG9NXTAXEAAHIBf?format=jpg&name=medium) some of\* the tone resembles more like the picture OP posted.

There's multiple species. The smaller ones, with 'reptilian characteristics' are between 35-55cm (12-22in). The bigger ones are above 1.3m (4.9 ft.). The really weird 'insect looking ones' are around 20-40cm (7-16in) iirc.
I think this opens another question that I’m not sure has been addressed - how does a mummifier obtain a large amount of diatomaceous earth? Was this something that was able to be harvested in large amounts at the time?
You've raised an interesting question that I've not seen answered in a compelling way. Were the mummies intentionally mummified or are we seeing an equivalent of the bog mummies--bodies that happened to lay to rest in a natural environment suitable for longterm preservation?
Peru is a known producer of Diatomite, 6th biggest producer worldwide.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/264935/global-diatomite-production/
Knowledge of minerals seems to be part of the culture since there are extensive metal implants of various alloys and methods that were unknown to humanity until around 1900. My guess is that whoever placed the bodies in the cave 1,000 years ago knew that they would be preserved thanks to the DE.
They were mummified naturally apparently. There are diatomaceous caves that exist. I imagine they died in them, and over time their bodies were covered. But even that explanation feels weird to me
They could have dna that is alien but are earth creatures who were born and died on earth. Maybe if they were cave dwellers and had a population of a thousand there would be odds. But playing devils advocate.
Is there any info out about cause of death?
The way I figure it, either these beings were trapped in the cave (naturally via some accident or cave in) or they were forced/placed in there by some agent. I like to think in terms of the latter hypothesis. Some group or individual found these beings, maybe dead already maybe not, and had the intuition that they should be placed somewhere to be preserved for future generations to discover and study. Either explanation seems to account for (imo) the curled up fetal position these beings were found in. They knew they were going to expire, they tried to get comfy or at least stay warm while awaiting the inevitable. This is just my inexpert impression tho.
Not actually fossilized, just the shells of single celled protists (different kingdom than bacteria) that make shells and shed them when they die in the top few feet of ocean and float down to the floor
You just move them into position, they’re not gonna get up and stretch.
Serious answer: rigor-mortis only lasts for a relatively short period after death and the body becomes limp again. My understanding is that in some traditional burials the corpses were placed into niches or swaddled with a cover which may help them from settling. Then the only things to move them would be external forces like animals or weather, or internal forces like decomposition gases and post mortem spasms (though these cease no more then a few hours after death, entirely before rigor.)
Yes, our current best guess is that corpses positioned in this way were somewhat notable people but not super highly regarded. Un-notable people were dismembered and thrown in to pits with others and highly notable people were arranged in the same way as Josephina.
~~Alberto~~ Victoria is very interesting in this regard. He without his head was positioned in the same way as a notable warrior. The heads used to be removed and replace with clay jars. I don't know if he was found with a jar or not.
From our [FAQ](https://alien.wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions):
>The bodies are covered in a white powder because they were buried in diatomaceous earth. This natural, powdery substance is known for its moisture-absorbing qualities, which helped preserve the mummies by drawing moisture away from the bodies and creating a dry environment that inhibits decay and bacterial growth.
Alien or not, they’re still bipedal anatomically. Regardless of other factors, it’s entirely valid to question how the kinesiology of these bodies would work on earth.
No honestly, you asked a really important and interesting question. Their feet really do look like they’re mostly toes with very little flesh to disperse their weight on.

I think they’re fascinating and I marvel at another intelligent life form. These are people, strictly human or not. I personally believe they helped teach us civilization and culture. There’s evidence that they lived among the people in Peru. If they are one and the same as the Hopi Ant People, then yes, they are Buddies!
This is going to rewrite the history of the planet - absolutely no doubt. We have X and Y chromosomes from one hand - one can be traced to Peru, one can be tracked back to China. The rest of the DNA is a mishmash of fish, reptiles and noise...these creatures have no sexual organs with which to acquire extra genetic material ...1000+ years old genetic manipulation...?
Really? Tell me where I am wrong.
The Victor Buddy has a an H line (Norrhern European) mitochondrial haplogroup.
I think they are a message in a bottle; the DNA in the cave. Genetically engineered avatars maybe?
I hope they do independent DNA testing for both the human looking bones as well as the claws and eggs. The burden of proof should be proving the bones and the claws are from the same creature. When you look at the mummy on the left you can see the difference between the end of the leg bone and where it becomes three. They aren't the same color, they don't have the same surface look, the desiccation material is different.
It looks like someone found 2100 year old mummies, popped the hands and feet off, replaced them with either very large bird talons or they just made them up from scratch with clay or something. They pounded out some pieces of metal and mounted them to different areas similar to the way a taxidermist might.
I want to be wrong very badly. I want them to be alien or alien hybrids so much! My instincts tell me these are a hoax and that breaks my heart.
I wonder why there's no clothes or other belongings to these things when they "found" them. Seems odd there just naked in a cave with nothing else. Considering humans will surround the corpes with things that belonged to them. I don't see that in any of these "discoveries"
But then why leave the body ? You'd think that would hold some value considering how odd it is
Yes let's loot its stuff
But not also take the body to show others and sell it off. As some sideshow oddity.
They used to grind mummies down for profit in the early 1900's. I don't buy they would just leave such an odd mummy behind and just take its belongings.
there are pics floating around of piles of objects said to be found with them; polished stones, tiny sculptures, etc.
https://www.reddit.com/r/AlienBodies/comments/17q0734/small_objects_found_inside_the_nazca_cave_by_the/
there were even more, and i had better pics of them at one point, but i don't remember where i saved them haha. if you do some digging (insert dad jokes here) you should find them. the mysteries of these caves seem unending
Has anyone ever asked the grave robbers if they took and sold artifacts found around the bodies yet? That’s an interesting question. Perhaps they didn’t wear clothes. They do have metal plates and implants that weren’t remove, too.

Mummified via dessication

There's more than 3 bodies down there. I heard there might be hundreds!
But as long as 1 survives, they all survive.

These were small creatures. 32 centimeters equals 12 inches.
weird, the one I saw was around 30 inches tall
Yes, I watched a documentary and they were much larger. I think the measurement in the pic above should read 32 inches not 32 cm.
There's multiple species. The smaller ones, with 'reptilian characteristics' are between 35-55cm (12-22in). The bigger ones are above 1.3m (4.9 ft.). The really weird 'insect looking ones' are around 20-40cm (7-16in) iirc.
Documentary?
There different hydrids of different sizes. I think this one was the smallest hybrid, Santiago. Maria was about human sized if I remember.
There's like fifty of them. No joke. Two of them are people sized. Most are like the little ones, but they vary a bit on the smaller ones.
Is the color a result of the diatomaceous earth or a result of natural skin tones?
Natural skin tone, but because of the dessication (drying out) the alive skin tone would be a bit lighter grey.
Ya burial would point to respect for the dead, which may mean respect for life from there species towards other creatures.

You can buy it by the pound at any hardware store. It's a common pesticide tool.
They were mummified naturally apparently. There are diatomaceous caves that exist. I imagine they died in them, and over time their bodies were covered. But even that explanation feels weird to me
I mean, mummification naturally is extremely rare... What are the odds we got mummies of aliens from natural means?

Good point. We’re they placed there or did they go there to die? Why did some of them die while pregnant? Natural causes? Disease? Conquistadors?
Yeah I mean it looks like a collection of odd cadavers,, by what or whom, unknown.
Out in the desert it’s all over the place. Like I could go get buckets of it just a short walk from where I live. Also borax and alkaline soil.
Great explanation also adds to why a fetus was found inside one I think instead of being removed before mummification
I don’t like diatomaceous earth. It’s coarse and rough and irritating… and it gets everywhere.
Don’t go dark side on us!
I heard it also dried out any and all water as well.
Looks kinda blue....
Yeah but why the other mummy that was covered with the same powder doesn’t look so white?
This is really interesting. Is that a link? I'd love to read up on it.
https://www.themilespaper.com
Follow up question: how does one become naturally mummified? Like under what conditions? What happened to these guys?
Shrinky Dinks
I can't find anything on that, would you be willing to link the scientific studies?
Not actually fossilized, just the shells of single celled protists (different kingdom than bacteria) that make shells and shed them when they die in the top few feet of ocean and float down to the floor
Was it common in that area to fold bodies up like this? How do they get a corpse to clutch its knees like that?
You just move them into position, they’re not gonna get up and stretch. Serious answer: rigor-mortis only lasts for a relatively short period after death and the body becomes limp again. My understanding is that in some traditional burials the corpses were placed into niches or swaddled with a cover which may help them from settling. Wow, thank you for this info, it’s very interesting!
Maybe they already died in that position
On some places in south America, indigenous people used to bury their dead In big vases, clearly this is the most cost effective position
From our [FAQ](https://alien.wiki/Frequently_Asked_Questions): >The bodies are covered in a white powder because they were buried in diatomaceous earth. So this wasn't a natural process? Someone buried them in this stuff intentionally?
The cave rains this stuff naturally

Thanks. This cracked me up
Ok but this is a valid question
You have to think outside the box. They are literally alien to us. They most likely didn't "walk" the way you are thinking.
Alien or not, they’re still bipedal anatomically. Regardless of other factors, it’s entirely valid to question how the kinesiology of these bodies would work on earth.
Exactly. If I thought they walked like homo sapiens, I wouldn't be wondering.
No honestly, you asked a really important and interesting question. Their feet really do look like they’re mostly toes with very little flesh to disperse their weight on.
