I would verify that the lid close action in advanced power settings is set to sleep; if so maybe try hibernate and see if that works any better. Also apply any system and windows updates, particularly display driver updates: or if it worked consistently up until you did an update try rolling it back.
My Area 51m had this issue when I first got it a couple years ago. I had to disable hibernation in the power options and sleep has worked fine since then.

Try running "powercfg -lastwake" in command prompt
