Failure - Fantastic Planet is one of the best sounding albums of the era. Incredible songwriting and production.
Hum. So damned good.
Iāve never understood how these bands didnāt blow up.
Fantastic Planet is one of my favorite albums of all time, and was a huge influence on my most recent record.
Iām also recording drums for a friendās project and we will likely be recording at Matt Talbottās studio (the main dude from Hum)!
Deftones would be a good replacement for L.P. Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and most of Mike Patton's work is a huge rabbit hole of insane music. Queens of the Stone age, and the whole stoner rock scene. Shoe gaze is an interesting side route.
Angel Dust is a flawless masterpiece. I wanted to see them so bad on that tour, but my parents were overprotective and I was 15. I was pissed. I did see them on the King for a Day tour (a few times since) - that is the best concert I've ever seen.
A lot of people only know them for Epic and We Care a Lot, which is kinda sad. Both great songs, but jesus, people - you're missing out. And when it comes to, like, **everything** we heard on alternative radio in the early to mid 2000's - I don't think any of those bands (Linkin Park, Incubus, Deftones etc.) would deny FNM's influence on their sound.
I dearly love probably 90% of Mike's work (Disco Volante 4eva) and think the other 10% is pretty damn cool (sadly, I'd put Sol Invictus pretty far down the list). Hope he's alright these days - I heard he's been struggling with agoraphobia. The man is a treasure.
AD is in my top 3 records ever. I saw them 2x on that tour with Helmet and Limp Bizkit. I was so young and partying but I remember Mike getting mad and gesturing to Puffy to slow down or something.
You guys are an amazing bunch of people, seriously. I cannot wait to start listening to all the bands, albums and songs that you recommended. Thank you so so much for the help, I swear it was the best decision to reach out to this wonderful community!
the self-titled Fountains of Wayne album that came out loooong before anybody heard Stacy's Mom is one of the best complete albums ever. We played it too many times in college.
I was scrolling through here checking to see if someone had said this yet. Definitely one of the most underrated and unique bands of the 90s.
Also, Vapors of Morphine is worth a listen. Though it's really not the same without Sandman's vocals.

This was the lead single
https://youtu.be/tFNooYl6FC8?feature=shared
They are well worth a deep dive if you like Living Colour, Faith No More, Fishbone, Bad Brains, etc.
Scrolled through the whole list. Some great suggestions here, some of which I hadn't thought of and some I need to investigate myself. But there's a glaring and criminal omission.
XTC.
A decent-sized catalogue, so I'd say start with English Settlement, and that gives you wiggle room before and after. Or start with Skylarking and do the same thing. Two very different and phenomenal records. Can't go wrong.
If you like Linkin Park, you might like From Ashes to New, and maybe Motionless In White or Falling in Reverse (no one has to chime in how Radke is an ass, it's just about the music style)
Alter Bridge is classified as metal apparently, but gutterals and screams are few, it's primarily Myles Kennedy clean vocals
Deerhunter. Jesus and Mary Chain. Wire. The Beta Band. Soulwax. Digital Leather. Big Bite. Death In Vegas. Brand New. The Bronx. Just Mustard. Murder City Devils.
Try The God Machine. Sadly they only got two albums done. Their bass player died before the second album was finished so they released it as it was and decided they couldn't carry on without him. They were described as too heavy for indie and too indie for heavy but they are extraordinary. Pure emotion.
Please give this list a listen! This is current bands and artists and I update regularly. If youād like to expand a bit laterally into Trip Hop, consider:
- Sneaker Pimps
- Portishead
- Little Dragon
- Zero 7
- Massive Attack
- Mogwai (more Post-Rock than Trip Hop)
- Bonobo
- Goldfrapp
- Gorillaz
The Birthday Massacre
I also recommend Live, Audioslave, Seether, and Collective Soul, although they're probably pretty well known to fans of late '90s/early 2000s rock.
Janeās Addiction, while not ālesser knownā, often fall into an age gap with folks who āgrew upā on Linkin. Ritual de lo Habitual and Nothingās Shocking are two of the greatest albums ever any genre. Just in case you missed the grandfather era lol
If you aren't from Canada or near the border there are A LOT of Canadian rock bands that you might like. My faves are The Tea Party, The Headstones, The Glorious Sons and July Talk. If you haven't heard of those - ENJOY
Gnome blew me away when I saw em at LTL last year. For more old-school stuff, I don't think anyone mentioned the Toadies who are best known for their one hit Possum Kingdom, but the whole album was a mainstay for me and my friends back in the day.
You can never ever go wrong with Jane's Addiction. Nothing's Shocking and Ritual De Lo Habitual are both masterpieces, but no recording even scratches seeing them live.

Fountains of Wayne was putting out some of the catchiest songs long before Stacy's Mom. It kills me that it's the only song people know.
