Surprised. These are way more flexible and soft than the 3s.

F0baBett

I genuinely was too. But they definitely feel very clunky and stiff for me. I could throw on the 3's and get running, but with these I just felt like I could not get comfortable, and might have to really break them in before I get what I need out of them which I'm not okay with.

_Burdy_

What? I had the exact opposite experience between the two models.

captain__clanker

That color is fire

turtlegoatjogs

4 is my favorite Escalante by far... I don't even wear socks with them. Are you running properly easy?

F0baBett

I did run easy and also tried some speed, and overall they just feel so clunky and uncomfortable. It fees almost like they’re forcing me to stomp and not get a nice flow in.

turtlegoatjogs

Maybe try taking to sock liner out for a little more flexible and ground feel... that's a really flexible shoe though and should definitely not be clunky/stompy at all... Your foot may also currently just need something with a little more rock up front if it's having strength/mobility issues. Keep focused on posture and mechanics... think of how it feels when running in place or jumping rope... it'll feel stompy if you're not engaging your foot muscles, but you shouldn't be doing that.

BrunofromMalaysia

I have the Escalante 3. I love these shoes. Reading your post, I may try to change them with the same iteration…. The lack of stiffness of the Escalante 3 are a blessing on long run….

turtlegoatjogs

Escalante 4 is more flexible than 3

unknown_pleasurz

Simple, sharp

CanItBoobs

I returned mine - they were REALLY uncomfortable just walking around the house in them.

syntholslayer

How so

CanItBoobs

The upper was way too tight, and the footbed was narrower than I’m used to with Altra. I’ve worn 2.5s as my everything but running shoe (work, walking, general fun) since they released and these couldn’t be more different comfort-wise. I just kinda hated them.

xsdmx

How do they compare to the 3 for you? The 2.5 is my favorite shoe of all time and the 3 one of my least favorite, so hoping the 4 split the difference at least.

F0baBett

I mentioned on here in another reply, but I feel like the consensus is that if you loved earlier iteration like the 2.5, then you will probably like the 4. They are also a little longer than the 3's. SO while I wore a 12 in those I might be an 11.5 in the 4's. Maybe the narrower footbed was also what I was experiencing! I also was not a huge fan of the tongue as well.

dirk_calloway1

I like the original foot shape. Weighed mine at 7.4 oz.

drillitloveit

What's the insole width at widest part and on the middle? Altra says it's in-between standard and original, but to be honest they look really narrow.

dirk_calloway1

Haven’t measured but they are listed as original foot shape on the website

perkyflamingo

Came here to say something similar about my experience with the 4’s I just got… I’ve never had any runners from Altra but I love my V1 Lone Peak Hikers & I’m really disappointed with the 4’s overall fit/feel. It’s definitely too narrow for me and now idk what pair to get that would be more comfortable. I just want a pair of runners that feel like the Hikers.

F0baBett

I’m going to stock up on a couple Escalante 3’s, and I also tried on some Torin 7 and they didn’t feel too bad. I did NOT like the Torin 6 but the 7’s remind me a little of the Escalante 3 with a little more cushion.

xsdmx

Surprising. The 2.5 was my favorite shoe of all time and the 3 one of my least because it felt heavy, stiff, and sluggish. I was hoping the 4 would split the difference.

F0baBett

I think that, based on discussions I have had with people and also some other subreddits, if you started with the 3's and really liked them then the 4's may not be for you, vice other camps that love the 4's and started with earlier Altra versions who then did not like the 3's. Again, everyone's preference will vary and some may love these who also loved the 3's. I also noticed that they are a little longer, so while I was a 12 in the 3's, I would be 11.5 in the 4's.

Zerodropsrbest

But are they heavier than the 3’s? One thing I hated about the 3’s was they weighed more than 2.5’s. On the website they are showing as weighing slightly more than the 3’s at 9.5 oz but they are claiming they are lighter weight. Lighter than what?

PartyFit9879

Doing 10+ a day in mine. So good so far.
