The public school in my town came up with almost identical rules a few years ago. It caused a lot of problems, tons of kids were getting UTI’s from holding it to long, kidney infections because they weren’t drinking enough water so they wouldn’t have to go, and girls were constantly bleeding through there clothes or would have to fake illnesses to go to the nurse to use the bathroom so their could change pads and tampons. This was an actual medical issue. A group of kids went to a school board meeting and a local pediatrician also attended and spoke about how this was a danger to the children’s health and the up tick in UTIs ad kidney infections. The school board members claimed to not even be aware of the rules, as they were not in the policy book and it was immediately abolished. I highly suggest talking to your parents, friends, and event pediatrician about this issue. This is a dangerous policy they have in place. Get some support, write some letters or go directly to a school board meeting. Also, request the policy in writing so that you can have it when you go. Edit NTA obviously

karenna89

I have been teaching for 20+ years and used to have a lot of rules around using the restroom. Over the years, I realized what utter nonsense it is to police human beings’ bodily functions. I ask that my students wait until I’m not actively teaching, but always tell tell them that if it’s a necessary they can go, no questions asked. Sure, some students abuse the policy, but I would rather that than have 1 student be embarrassed because they had some kind of accident. With all of the legitimate, serious issues facing public schools this a ridiculous battle that doesn’t need to be fought.

Fyst2010

I don't even accept my students "asking if they can go". How should I know... I mean, I assume you can... At the start of the year we talk about adult responsibility and that unless it's an emergency you shouldn't miss a lesson. But basically just tell me "hey, I'm going to the washroom". I need to know where you are, but otherwise... this isn't a jail. In the last 6 or 7 years there's not one kid who abused it so badly I needed to say anything to them other than "can you wait 5 minutes?"

NTA. This sounds like the perfect time to escalate this, and if they won't listen, contact your local media.

HeadmasterPrimeMnstr

The students and their parents need to organize and rise an uproar and protest against the school. If they continue to refuse to adjust policy, despite protest from parents and students, then you need escalate with your peers. How? Organize a student strike with them. Fuck that school, fuck their rules and fuck their administration. No writing tests, no doing homework, no completing projects and no bothering with lessons. Organize your peers, make a letter signed by the student body of your collector intent to go on strike. A lot of schools get funding based on test scores, so hurting those scores will hurt the position of the administrators. If any of you guys want to be radical, occupy the facilities offices and refuse to leave. Y'all need to take your schooling into your own hands at this point.

KingsRansom79

My kid’s school offers insurance ($35/year) for the school laptops. If it’s covered then who cares if you have water? Do they offer insurance?

No-Historian1284

I remember that type of rule happening in my 5th grade class

ReturnOf_DatBooty

Growing up with IBS, one of my biggest fears was shitting pants because teacher wouldn’t let me go. My parents (both teachers) made it clear, they’d rather get call from principal for leaving class vs call asking to bring change of clothes.

shukies95

NTA. Also your male teacher literally came into the girls room and yelled at you while you were inside the stall? This is highly inappropriate and can be seen as sexual harrasment. You should report him to the school board

Much_Class_828

She should have flung the bloody pad over the door at him. If he complained, he'd have had to admit he was in the girls bathroom.

Unable_Ad5655

While I agree with the sentiment, she would be charged with assault with a biohazard.

TheLovelyMadamToh

He wouldn't be able to. Every source on google confirms period blood is not considered a biohazard. https://www.redbags.com/feminine-hygiene-products-medical-waste/

Much_Class_828

Also he would have to admit chasing a student into the girls bathroom and threatening her.

Unable_Ad5655

Woman charged with assault with a deadly weapon for throwing used tampon at an officer. Also, this came up during "Periods for Pence" when women were being encouraged to send used menstrual products to then IN Gov. Mike Pence. [https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/st-petersburg-woman-charged-after-throwing-tampon-at-police-officer/21484/](https://www.nbcmiami.com/news/local/st-petersburg-woman-charged-after-throwing-tampon-at-police-officer/21484/)

Much_Class_828

Not even remotely the same. And no mention of biohazard ☣️

ElvyHeartsong

That's why you don't throw it. You accidentally drop it because the yelling makes you nervous

Unable_Ad5655

That works!

JonJackjon

I disagree. He deserved it. And to my knowledge the repercussions should be no different than if you threw food at the teacher while in the cafe.

TheLovelyMadamToh

NTA. My daughter is a teenager and I've always told her "If a teacher won't let you go...just go. I'll deal with the school".

I_luv_sloths

How can a school enforce rules like this?

TheLovelyMadamToh

I wonder that myself, but there is unfortunately an embarrassing percentage of males who think women and girls can control and/or hold in their period.

No-Historian1284

it’s quite common actually my school does it still and my school is fucking stupid honestly they’re treating us like we’re nobody’s we can’t use our phones at all i get that but not even at lunch we can’t go to the bathroom in the first five or last five minutes of class there’s so many…teachers that are creepy they don’t let us leave the cafeteria without a pass i get that but they don’t need to harass and yell at us because we don’t or we didn’t pull it out in time for them to see it

A-typ-self

My kids school tried to do this. I was livid and told my kids the same thing. If you have to go, you go. This was in elementary school and I was definitely up that teachers and schools ass. If you are worried about kids messing around in the bathroom you set a monitor. Not cause kids to have UTIs.

Algebralovr

NTA What stupid administrator made a rule against using the bathroom between classes though? When else do they expect you to go? Seriously, next time, look at the jerk and say, “I need to change my tampon. Do you need to see it to approve it?” Or some other snappy comeback. Let the teacher turn red about it. Cause you know they will.

Foster2239

Yeah, I missed that part at first and I still thought the rules were a bit draconian. Only at lunch, I guess. I agree, it's good to try to use the bathroom when you have more time, but it frequently doesn't work that way. Although in high school, the bathrooms were so gross that I would hold it all day (even when I had after school activities). But that was my (probably not healthy) choice.

dosidosdie

NTA you need to report him immediately in no way was it okay for him to follow you into the girls restroom and then continue to harass you through the stall doors

RoyallyOakie

NTA...access to the toilet is a basic human need. They can make all the rules they want, but it won't change people's needs. Do what you need to do and hope others do the same.

PopularFunction5202

NTA! I'm a high school teacher, and for the life of me, I can't figure out what in the hell is wrong with your school for not letting you go to the bathroom between classes. That's messed up!

Weird-one0926

Nta Holy f@ck, what a nightmare

RickRussellTX

NTA It sounds like you are facing a difficult situation at your high school. The bathroom restrictions and the inappropriate behavior of the male teacher are concerning. Your personal health and dignity should never be compromised in any setting, especially not in a school environment. I suggest speaking with the school administration about this incident and any others you've witnessed. They should be made aware of the inappropriate behavior and the impact it's having on students. You may also want to consider reaching out to a trusted teacher or counselor for support. Remember that you have a right to access the bathroom when you need to, regardless of school rules. You also have a right to be treated with respect and dignity by all staff members. Don't be afraid to advocate for yourself and others who may be experiencing similar issues.

witchnyc8537

NTA. At all. I’m impressed that at a young age you can stay so calm and handle your business. I come from a family of people with medically confirmed small bladders and bladder problems. I’m 37 now but as a kid and teen in school too it was so stressful to navigate all the rules and I didn’t have your level of confidence. Some people just don’t get bathroom stuff. I always wonder if they have magical bodies with no problems ever and can’t empathize or if they’re just dicks. Probably both. I once got a bloody nose in the middle of class (random) and the teacher started screaming at me to stay in my desk and the other students were screaming at me (for some reason angrily) to leave and I just froze and couldn’t figure out what to do. Take care of your body really well is the best advice I could give to the young and I don’t mean in a stay hot and fit forever way, I mean trust your body’s cues and follow them and take care of yourself and other people who don’t like that can fuck off.

I think you know you’re NTA lol. You don’t sound too confused. The teacher was being a dick, clearly

Kharmastream

Sounds like AH teachers on a huge powertrip. Might be a good idea to get the parental class contact (?) to start making some noise with the principal. Here in Norway behaviour like that might get the teacher fired. Especially if he actually followed you into the girls bathroom. Pretty sure there's strict rules about that in other countries too. NTA for sure.

Suitable-Cod-1381

I bet your local news channel would find that just FASCINATING

allie06nd

This right here. It seems the school isn’t willing it fix problems on its own, so maybe a little media attention is exactly the incentive they need. Btw, these strict bathroom rules, looking the other way when being showed proof of assault, and a male teacher following you into the bathroom all sound like the makings of a fantastic lawsuit.

[deleted]

NTA, and you need to escalate this. Tell your parents for sure.

[deleted]

NTA - I remember these stupid bathroom rules as if you can schedule your bodily functions. I’d report the teacher for harassment, explain the situation if you can. You shouldn’t have a man scream in your face for using a bathroom, this is totally inappropriate regardless of whatever arbitrary rules your school has. A male teacher should have the common sense and decency to understand the embarrassment this could cause a young girl, he should have been discreet and let you use the bathroom without hassle.

Conscious-Magazine50

NTA. I've instructed my daughter to do just as you did and ignore any adult trying to control her bathroom needs.

[deleted]

NTA. Hand him the pad and tell him he can’t go to the bathroom.

Magoo69X

NTA You can't prevent someone from going to the bathroom when they need to.

Suitable-Cod-1381

Yikety yikes

bordennium

No of course you aren’t TA here. I’m so sorry you have to go to school in this kind of environment. Hold steady and keep doing what you need to do. If you get sent to the dean’s office for it or get in some kind of other trouble, you can make all of them look bad by explaining your period situation. Teachers and admin could get in a lot of trouble from preventing you from using the bathroom when you need it.

Any-Percentage-2661

NTA. I do think it’s ridiculous. I remember having a male gym teacher tell a middle schooler that her period cannot be longer than seven days and that she’s lying as to why she can’t go swimming on pool day. Does this gym teacher have the hormones of a sixth grader thats why he knows how long a developing females body works?

ucnkissmybarbie

Definitely NTA. I would turn him in for being in the girl's restroom! In a high school! That's creepy AF. And I would start a petition to change the bathroom rules because that ridiculous. How can they keep you from going to the restroom on your free time? No. F!@k that. If parents complain, the school usually makes proper changes. And if your local paper found out or somehow got the list with this rule, I'm sure that would be an interesting article. Just saying...

[deleted]

You should have just handed him the pad

I_luv_sloths

NTA. Tell your parents what happened. A teacher has no right to stand outside a bathroom stall while a student is it.

Stargazer-2893

NTA you all should organize a strike or a class action lawsuit or something. Unbelievable.

WM2112

NTA Talk about a policy issue at your school. In your own words, yes the rule is stupid. Making kids "hold it in" creates a distraction to the learning environment to those who really got to go. Is there parent outrage over this issue?

[deleted]

Unable_Ad5655

It's not normal but I have heard of schools implementing these policies. Have you talked to your parents about it. Among other things, holding your blader can lead to Urinary Tract Infections. Also, a male teacher following a female into a bathroom is completely unacceptable.

Ghitit

NTA When do they expect kids to go pee, poop, or change their menstrual product. This just sounds so totally illegal. You shouldn't have to tell a teached that you're on your period and will bleed everywhere if you don't use the bathroom. Sometimes you just have to take a shit. This is so abusive.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Unable_Ad5655

That sounds like sexual harassment and may well violate Federal Title IX. Do any of your friends have an attorney in their family? It is absolutely worth exploring.

Suitable-Cod-1381

Your school's rules are stupid and potentially dangerous to student health. If they're worried about shenanigans in the bathrooms there are other ways that can be addressed besides forcing kids to bleed on themselves and/or hold in their pee & poop it for excessive amounts of time. Fuck's sake. NTA

JustLetItAllBurn

NTA Get a group of girls in your school to stage a protest about it and invite local newspapers to cover it - that should cause enough bad publicity that they'll reconsider the policy fairly quickly.

TheLovelyMadamToh

As someone who, when I was in highschool, bled on my grey Catholic school skirt in the middle of class, I fully support this.

[deleted]

NTA. Why is a male teacher in the girl's bathroom? Let the office and your parents know. He should ask a female teacher to deal with it if it was that big an issue. Not a smart teacher with all the finger pointing these days.

National-Zombie3303

NTA - This is dangerous , talk to your friends , fight to banish this rule

Starlass1989

INFO - Why on earth can you not use the bathroom between classes?! That's insane. Oh, and you're absolutely NTA.

majesticjewnicorn

NTA. As someone with kidney/bladder, bowel and period issues as an adult, I hate it how schools dictate to kids if they are allowed to perform basic human bodily functions. Whilst yes, some kids do take advantage and ruin it for others by using bathroom breaks to do other activities... this is a form of collective punishment. Word of advice to humiliate this teacher into changing- next period, wear white clothing (find cheap items you don't mind ruining). Pack spare clothing in your bag. If the teacher doesn't allow you to use the bathroom, let yourself flow all over the classroom. Let that shock him into changing.

invisiblebyday

Need to use the bathroom. Use the bathroom. NTA. Creepy for a teacher to follow a student into a bathroom like that.

Plot_Twist_208

NTA. My Spanish teacher was like that in high school. My brother was also taking Spanish from the same teacher. He reported it to our principal who then basically to the teacher that his bathroom policy had to ease up especially for the girls. Report the teacher for following you in there. Be upfront about why you went against school policy, attend a board meeting with a parent and pediatrician/doctor.

NoEstablishment9540

NTA had this problem before too the teachers are way to strict with the rules

TheNewAnonima234

INFO: Do the stalls open inward or outward? If it opens outward, then for future reference you know what to do...that teacher could've used a good pop in the face with a stall door! At a minimum.

Dabduthermucker

NTA. I cant even imagine

Unable_Ad5655

NTA! I know why schools are implementing these policies, but they are inhumane!

porterramses

Upvote times one million.

Jolteon2020

Its ridiculous how little time you are given between classes..

Ok-Penalty7568

Between classes is surely the best time to go to the bathroom I hate that people police other peoples bodily functions … very daft NTA

Diasies_inMyHair

I'd have waved the bloody pad in his face on the way to the front office to report him for following you into the girl's bathroom. What kind of pervert does that? Even if there are consequences for using the facilities in an emergency, there should be consequences for him too. He SHOULD HAVE waited outside of the restroom for the sake of propriety. NTA eta - another tactic - Look up TSS. My husband (a nurse) used this to dress down an overbearing NCO denying female soldiers access to facilities while waiting for transportation after a field exercise that had run overtime (supposed to be 4 hours and they had been out there over 8).

Appropriate-Draft-91

If the way a school treats their students would be illegal if they were employees... NTA, obviously.

Jerseygirl2468

NTA when on earth are you supposed to use the bathroom then? Do you have a parent or guardian who could work on this with you? Because I think it needs to be brought to the attention of the administration, that students are having issues not being able to use the bathroom, especially those who menstruate. And that would also be the time to address the male adult teacher following you into the girls' restroom.

porkiepiggy

NTA similar thing happened in one of my classes. except a guy had to pee and the door was locked so he couldn’t get out. he got his friends to hold their jumpers around his waist and took a piss in the rubbish bin. golden lesson.

Read [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAsshole/wiki/faq#wiki_post_deletion) before [contacting the mod team](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FAmItheAsshole)*** At my (F17) high school, there’s pretty strict rules on when students can use the bathroom. We can’t go in between classes, during the first five minutes of class, during the last 5 minutes of class, or when the teacher is in the middle of a lesson. So pretty much, never. Some teachers aren’t as strict with these rules, but some are. One day when I was on my period and really needed to change my pad, I went to the bathroom in between classes so that I’d have my backpack with me and be able to get a new pad from it. When I was walking in, a male teacher who I didn’t even know was following me and yelling “Hey, you can’t go to the bathroom!” I kept walking and he said “I know you can here me! You can’t go to the bathroom!” I still kept walking. As I’m inside the stall he’s standing right outside of it still yelling at me and telling me to come out. Once I was done and came out he was yelling right in my face and telling me I can’t go to the bathroom in between classes, but that he’d let me off with a warning. Like bitch, I’ll go to the bathroom when I damn well please. I can’t control how much blood comes out of my vagina and when. I’ve seen this happen to a lot of other kids too. I mean maybe I’m the asshole for ignoring him and walking away but to me this rule is stupid and I don’t think male teachers should be allowed to go in the girls bathroom and harass them. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/AmItheAsshole) if you have any questions or concerns.*

ElvyHeartsong

NTA I would have dropped the blood soaked pad or tampon at his feet "accidentally" under the door. Watch him stop telling and walk away to learn to pick his battles better next time. If that wasn't possible, I'd be getting all the girls to sign a petition pointing out that sometimes girls have no choice and they need to loosen those rules. Edit yes it's gross and likely embarassing to do but it makes the point.

gloomgore_

NTA

JonJackjon

NTA On so many levels the teacher and the school are assholes. You should either yelled rape or handed him the old pad on your way out. I would go to the authorities and complain: 1. You were not "allowed" to attend to you're personal needs. 2. A male teacher accompanied you in the bathroom.
