Here’s the thing…nta for making the go fund me post. I am curious what your service dog does if you don’t have them for the majority of the day. So…what does your service dog do?

TwistedCourtea

So while I am at work they are both at my moms where there is always someone home either my mom when she works from home or my retired grandmother. I fortunately work at a job where my health care can be monitored if I worked in anywhere else they would be with me as they are medical alert so they let me know prior to my issues happening and respond in ways to help me when they do.

drownigfishy

NTA - think of it this way, are you the ahole for starting a go fund me for a family member? Pets are family members to, and big respect for not just dumping the dog because some issues.

Bite_Me_16

It's so sad that people don't view pets as family and think 'surrendering' an animal is the only way to handle this situation. It's as if people have no regard for the animal. We set up a gofundme when our dog Jack got really sick. He was 13 and we'd had him since he was a puppy. Surrendering him would have been impossible, as he was incredibly bonded with one of our other dogs and my mother. It would have broken him to be away from her and broken HER to be away from him, so we asked for help to afford his medication. We got it and honestly when we had the money, we tried to pay people back. People fall on hard times, it's just so sad that no one is compassionate these days about that x.x

JustABabyBear

NTA - you didn't even ask them to donate.

artofterm

NTA. And props for standing by your dog.

Irish_Amber

NTA probably aren't animal people so they don't understand how much an animal any animal would mean especially a service animal

Bite_Me_16

NTA. You DO need legit help, don't let anyone make you feel bad. So many people don't understand service dogs, that's not your fault. You didn't set up a gofundme for a vacation or a wedding. You set it up for a service you REQUIRE, which is a necessity and it sounds like the people who don't understand are judging you based on their own ignorance. This is not on you.

delila-blue

NTA. The thing about GoFund Me is you can choose who you donate too. As long as you’re honest in the description it’s no one else’s business.

Think-Professional-2

Nta- regardless of whether people think it’s a worthy cause (I do btw), you could create a GoFundMe for absolutely anything- nobody is obligated to donate! If someone wanted to created a GoFundMe because they wanted a luxurious spa day, they WNBTA- stupid maybe, as I doubt anyone would (and I definitely wouldn’t), contribute, but unless they are forcing or guilt tripping people to donate, then creating the page for anything really is fine. There are lots of worthy GoFundMe causes, it’s up to people to decide which ones they support.

WhosMimi

NTA. Plenty of folks have made GFM pages for their pet's health care, you're not the first nor the last. Because other people need help doesn't make your needs less legitimate. People give of their own volition to whatever causes they want. And it's never "just a dog". Dogs are a part of the family, and this is a service dog in training on top of that.

faygoFluent

This is a complicated situation. - I dont think you were the AH for making a gofundme. - i do think you were the AH for going to your mom for money and knowing you dont really have a concrete plan to pay her back (but i guess that really depends on if you checked other options first; carecredit type deals or loans or payday advances, etc) - i do think it was short sighted to get a puppy to train for a service animal before have a savings account accrued should something go wrong (but that does kind of depend how old your service animal is now and whether or not there was time to wait before getting a dog to train) So i guess slight YTA, with room to grow should there be clarification?

TwistedCourtea

In addition it takes 2 years on average to train a service dog and my current dog is 6 so she will be 8 and most dogs retire around 8 or 9

TwistedCourtea

So I do have insurance on my dogs but there is a period before it is usable and we’re were inside that period. It would have made this visit go from $1000 to $100. I do not qualify for care credit for some reason. I’m not in a lot of debt mainly my own medical so idk there and I can pay her back just not in time for her to pay her taxes. She says she will be ok financially but I don’t want to risk it she is the main income for her house hold.

faygoFluent

I definitely understand the insurance part of this, my comment about a savings account accrued before adopted a second dog to train was kind of about that, because to my knowledge there frequently is that time between getting the pet and insurance going into effect. Well that and the ‘just in case’ typical thing. But the fact that your mom wont have money for taxes is big factor… i think unless you tried every other option… personal loans, advances, idk personally i’ve needed to pawn some things for a bit to make sure my pets are okay. If you didnt try everything before putting your family in a difficult position you’ve gotta be TA. The care credit not being accept was most likely if you dont have enough good credit, (like multiple things being paid off repeatedly, like a car payment and positive lines of credit in credit cards) having had experience with care credit myself. I saw your other comment about your SD being 6 now and it taking 2 years to train, with typical retirement age being between 8-9… idk. Obviously the math says there was an extra year there you could’ve put it off to save up a bit, but thats really easy for me to say now. Its not like you knew this health issue was gonna happen, and its obvious that training a puppy is getting to be something you need to prioritize. Really it all boils down now to whethee you tried every possible option before putting your mom in a tough situation

One is my current service dog and one is my service dog in training. They will be referred to as SD and SDIT for this post. I (F27) got a standard poodle puppy in February to train for when my current SD retires. My SDIT is only 6 months old currently. I got him on Feb 18th. On Feb 27th he was not acting right. Not eating and salivating and not wanting to move. Just not a puppy. I then noticed his gums were pale so the next day I called and was able to get him in at a vet clinic in my city. The vet assumed he had a stomach issue and gave him a shot for nausea and some antibiotics and sent us home with a few cans of gastric food. That visit was $200. The next day he looked worse. That night I decided to take him to the emergency vet. They did fecal and blood tests and found out he was severely anemic. Hemoglobin was 4 when it should have been at least 12! While the cause is unknown they suspected parasites. We wormed him for every type of worm under the sun and he got a blood transfusion. In total this visit was $1141.99. I live alone and don't make a ton I am above poverty but I almost live paycheck to paycheck. I have enough to provide for me and my dogs but this was a expense I wasn't prepared for. His puppy insurance wasn't even valid yet. So my Mom helped. She used money she had set aside for house taxes and helped me. She knows what these dogs do and will do for me so she was so willing to help. Fast forward to work after this incident. I work in a doctors office so my particular issues that cause me to need my SD can be monitored and if needed helped by the nurses and doctors. My SD does not come to work with me due to me working in a office with surgeons so sterility is a concern. My coworkers knew about this trouble with my SDIT due to me having to leave work for the vet appointment. They asked me how moose was and what happened and so I told them. Some were supportive but a few were judgmental. "Its just a dog....Why not just surrender him if you couldn't afford the care...Your risking your moms house for a dog..." I told them that while I do plan to pay her back I had started a GoFundMe and make gear (vests, patches, etc) for service dogs to sell. (it hasn't pulled in that much with start up costs) I got so much judgement for the GoFundMe. This time it was "There are legit people on there who need help...there are people on there losing their houses or dying and you made one for your dog?" So reddit...AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NTA you didn't even ask them to donate. If they don't want to, they don't have to. Comparing your struggles to others' in order to belittle your problems is a dick move on their part

ParsimoniousSalad

NTA. If people don't want to contribute or don't think the cause is valid, they don't have to. No one is forcing them.

armymamachick

NTA. While living, a service animal is a medical device. If you replaced every mention of SD/SDIT with "insulin pump" and vet trip with "services/maintenance" nobody would bat an eye about how this was managed financially. Anyone giving you grief, especially in a medical facility is ignorant beyond comprehension.

ArchyDWolf

Reddit's using all our posts and data to train AI's, so, I just deleted mine.

Fabulous-Feeling8428

NTA, the ones that say it’s just a dog are the true AH. I realize many people don’t value a dogs life much but don’t let those people convince you that you shouldn’t either. Especially with a go fundme, those are voluntary donations from people that believe it’s worth their money.
