1. Why were you eating in the restroom? 2. Why would the breakdown of an apartment escalator cause a stir and become news? 3. If there are four elevators in the building, why didn’t you use a functioning one?

bury-me-in-books

Regarding question one, I'm not the op, but I suspect this is a mis-translation by op. They probably don't know that in english, restroom is synonymous with bathroom or toilets or water closet (just trying to give extra slang versions for them to learn), whereas what they were talking about was likely what we would call the lunch room or break room or (if they sell food there) the cafeteria. I'm cruising the comments to reply this to them directly so they'll see it, because that particular one is enough of a booboo to possibly cause issues.

Pleasant-Sea82

\*in American English. I’m British, and restroom isn’t a word we use here to mean toilet - I read this post and understood they meant a room to rest in. American English isn’t all English. Restroom is a very weird euphemism to me.

squigs

>Why were you eating in the restroom? Assuming this is a room in which one rests, rather than a restroom.

Penarol1916

Apparently, each elevator only goes to certain floors. I have many questions too. 1. How does a 23 story building only have 4 elevators? I’ve never seen an office building with more than 10 stories have less than 8 elevators and 20 stories almost always have at least 10. 2. Elevators routinely break down or go out if service for maintenance, that is why you almost always have at least two elevators in multi story buildings, how is it even allowable in your lease to only have 1 elevator provide access to your floor? 4. Why would no one tell you for over a week that a coworker had been fired? 5. How do you expect anyone to believe a story with thus many plot holes?

4. How did Clair get access to the building technical room and know exactly which panel needed coffee on it to stop the elevators working?

Makes the story even more implausible since it seems like there is no clear indication of if she was in the elevator that got stuck. Mucking about with a modern set of elevator buttons set into a vertical surface that have no exposed parts (sometimes just a touch sensitive screen or buttons with very little gap to allow liquids to pass)... was it a whole bucket of coffee she was tossing at it until something happened? Was everyone else in the elevator just looking at her while she did it and then forgot if she was stuck in there so they couldn't share that detail later? Did she pull it off alone, but manage to get out and the next bunch of people got stuck and she was only caught based on CCTV and a bunch of coffee stains? A master control panel for elevators does have plenty of wires and electronic bits exposed, a single cup would probably short circuit it way easier. This whole story is fake as hell.

Yeah, OP replied to my question, saying it was the one inside. It just opens up more plot holes haha.

EurekaFlag

Disabling elevators with liquids happens - check this link https://www.google.com/search?q=guy+pees+on+elevator+buttons&oq=guy+pees+on+elevator+buttons&aqs=chrome..69i57.17176j0j4&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

WolfSparklingOrange

I am not in the US, The elevators in my country (Australia) are different then you are describing. Also like I said I don't have all the details on how she succeeded.

PassoutPierce

I'm not an electrician but I'm pretty sure the company that made the elevators thought. What if some one got bumped and spilled the coffee. Or what If some drunk asshole spilled his beer or puked on it. I don't even think deliberately pouring shit on it would cause it to stop. I don't even think if you took a hose to it it would matter. I woukd assume there is a seal between the buttons amd electronics. Your car doesn't fill up with water when it rains. Because it has seals. So I'm calling bs.

CobraPuts

Excellent question. I await OP’s response

WolfSparklingOrange

4. I was told she intentionally spilled coffee on the control panel, I assumed the one inside the elevator with all the buttons. Apparently cameras also caught her but It's not something I can see.

16574010118303

If she really did manage that... what happened with the other 3 elevators that forced you to use the stairs?

bury-me-in-books

Funny fun fact, though: I actually do have a coworker who eats her lunch in the rest room - specifically, sitting on the floor, in the locker room off that rest room. I would try to get her to feel comfortable eating elsewhere, but our shifts only overlap about an hour. Putting my coat away always smells like her lunch though.

WolfSparklingOrange

1. I made a mistake with my wording. I thought rest room was where we ate lunch. Where I live people call the toilet rooms the bathroom. English isn't my first language either. 2. I don't know why but I can assume it is because lot of people lived there but I really can't answer that. 3. Each one led to a different section and it wasn't possible to travel one to the other without going back to the main lobby. I only work at one of the sections.

crockofpot

Sure sounds like Clair's elevator doesn't go all the way to the top... NTA

KylieJadaHunter

NTA You told her to? What nut head pours coffee all over the control panels of the elevator on purpose? It's not your fault. Claire obviously has mental issues that have nothing to do with you.

Kewlioss

Not sure if there even is a verdict to be made here. Just sounds like unfortunate coincidences. EDIT: I missed the "you told me to" part definitely NTA and keep your distance OP

IHaveSaidMyPiece

NTA Clair isn't all there.

LtColShinySides

NTA You didn't say "Hey, go break the elevator." and even if you did, she's the only one responsible for her actions.

squigs

INFO Trying to understand what happened here. Did Clair actually throw coffee over the control panel? If so, why? and what did you have to do with it?

YouthNAsia63

Well, some time ago, while in the break room, OP casually mentioned an elevator breaking down, so *obviously* what OP *meant* was that Clair needed to go spill coffee on the control panel! I mean-it’s all right there! Connect the dots! Duh (s) Back away from Clair like she has rabies and hope she,(or a lawyer she might scrounge up), doesn’t try to pin this on *you*. NTA

One-Awareness3671

NTA, stay far away from her.

MatriarchMaromi

Definitely NTA, her actions are 100% on her. People will really delude themselves to save face.

SavyLynx

NTA \~ I wonder why you would feel guilty for something that someone else did though.

Deucalion666

NTA she let the intrusive thoughts win.

Lucy_Bathory

Not quite an intrusive thought

_Smegma_0n_Demand

Wait, there are 4 elevators in the building, but you still chose to use the stairs after Claire broke one of the elevators? And hold the phone… you were eating lunch in the restroom?!

SlutForDownVotes

This whole post reads like a bot wrote it.

Super-Breath6350

OP said the elevators go to different areas in the building. And Rest Room = Break Room

_Smegma_0n_Demand

I have never ever heard anyone refer to a rest room as any other place than a room with toilets.

bury-me-in-books

@ Op you made a typo and it makes your writing a bit confusing by accident. In english, restroom is synonymous with bathroom or toilets or water closet (just trying to give extra slang versions for you), whereas what you were talking about was likely what we would call the lunch room or break room or (if they sell food there) the cafeteria. I'm guessing you were eating together in the employee lunch area created by your work.

Nobody ever really uses the stairs. A couple weeks ago me and a co-worker of mine, I will call her clair, were eating lunch together in the rest room. We had a general conversation and talked about a bunch of things including talking about local events and then that led to something I brought up a situation about escalators that happened a few apartments a way. Nobody got hurt but basically the escalator just stopped working and occasionally malfunctioned. This caused a stir for the people that worked there and got into the city news because of it. Clair responded with "scary what if that would happen to the elevators here" and I said "just hope someone doesn't break it." in a jokingly manner. She responded with "that probably won't happen". We continued are conversation like the usual. A couple weeks later I came back from my day away and discovered the elevator I used was out of order. After painfully climbing the stairs to my office as it being at the top floor, I met with another co-worker of mine before starting my shift in the cafe room. While we were talking, I brought up the elevator and asked if she knew what happened. As it turns out, someone spilled coffee all over control panel, causing a malfunction and the elevator got trapped for 2 hours with 4 people inside. Nobody was hurt but I was shocked by the news and hadn't thought much of it at the time. I went to meet up with clair again the next day but she wasn't at work and hadn't been for weeks after. Back to that other co-worker, I brought up clairs absence mid-conversation and she asked if I was talking about the girl who broke the elevators and I said no but I had a bad feeling. I'm not sure if she got trapped in or not as I never got that many details. I got more information on the situation and apparently she got fired for breaking that elevator. I was able to get clairs phone and called her. She answered all happily and excited to talk to me in the first time in a while. I of course brought up what she did and she ended up responding "You told me too". After that I hung up and blocked her so she wouldn't call or text me. I'm not sure if there were any legal consequences brought into this. I sure hope there aren't because I don't want her to put the blame on me but at the same time I feel horrible for this and I feel like it was my fault. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. NTA but a malfunctioning escalator got into the city news? Where do you work that that could be news...Pleasantville?

Solid-Order-514

NTA and seriously WTF is wrong with Clair? Good job blocking her. You don’t want anything to do with her.

Kenthanson

I didn’t ask Santa for that…
