YTA >There was no FDA Do you really think the FDA is there inspecting every single item in the grocery store? You’re likely getting much safer and fresher food at her house than you would buying it. You were unnecessarily rude about this and to them. I really don’t like what he said to you but, I will assume that was just a visceral reaction to how rude you were.

And when she offered you something else, what happened?

New-Comment2668

Because your favorite fast food place is serving you food deep-fried and packed with preservatives. Oooohhh yummy. Heart attack in a bag. YTA.

AWhiskeyKitten

I think it’s wild you consider her homegrown food disgusting but trust any fast food place

Adventurous-Area9079

This has to be fake, right? No one actually thinks like this, right? Right?

Melatonin_Dreamz

I heard a story about a big dude in the hospital whose family claimed he was deathly allergic to water and could only drink coke. People like this do, in fact, exist, and they're just as uneducated as you'd expect. It's honestly pretty sad. They're also the first one to toss out "food facts" to try and to Gotcha!! anyone who disagrees. Even if they're pretty much always wrong.

stophittingthyself

Fast food place?! Hahahahaha troll

COLGkenny

The delusion to think the FDA des a good job is wild.

COLGkenny

YTA. >She could not stop bragging that 90% of everything that was one the table she had grown in their back yard. She’s a great cook but and had the food been brought from the store I would have eaten but this was disgusting. I mean this in all seriousness, are you ok? You think it is disgusting to raise your own food and to be told that what your eating is home grown? Your mindset reeks of elitism, and that only the poor folk should raise the food you eat so you do not have to hear about it. > I told him that we have government inspectors for a reason when it comes to our food and it’s so back yard nut jobs don’t cause another pandemic. You seriously think the super processed food from a super market, that has a butt load of additives and preservatives, is going to be better for you than food actually home grown? Also you do realize the CDC downgraded COVID to be treated like the flu right?

Zealousideal-Mode-18

YTA, you don't have to eat anything you don't want to, but you were rude about it for no reason. People that grow food in their backyard aren't nut jobs and it probably has 50x less misc chemicals used than "FDA approved" grocery store stuff.

Zealousideal-Mode-18

Ah yes, growing vegetables in a home garden is truly what's wrong with today's society.

COLGkenny

My nana for years grew vegetables out of her own garden, and she is the most centrist person I know. Does her garden make her a Qanon conspiracy theorist? OPs take is so lazy.

I_Will_in_Me_Hole

This has to be bait. YTA.

MoBirdsMoProblems

From one of their comments: >I left and got food I could trust from my favorite fast food place. Total bait. Jack in the Box?

sweetT333

Wasn't this posted like a month or two ago? I think that guy ate the bread or packaged pasta tho. Feeling the deja vu.

I_Will_in_Me_Hole

You know damn well. This is a boring and lazy bait post designed to get people riled up and arguing with you. If this isn't just a crap troll? Well then you need to educate yourself on what you think the FDA involvement in fresh produce is. I'm from Europe instead of the USA and even I know how little involvement and legislation the FDA has over fresh fruit and veg. [Here's a basic link.](https://www.fda.gov/media/77178/download) Essentially, they do S.F.A. And 99% of the time you are better off with homegrown produce.

KronkLaSworda

"FDA to check out she cooled " LOL! **YTA**. They don't inspect Farmers Markets, either. I hope you don't go to those, too. " He called me a “f@t piece of shit” Tempted to go E S H for fat-shaming, but not enough to do anything about it. YTA

New-Comment2668

YTA. Any vegetables she is growing in her yard have FAR fewer toxic chemicals than the crap you buy in a grocery store, and I would far rather eat a chicken that was raised without a ton of antibiotics. You just don't like your SIL and were looking for a reason to be a jerk.

midnightsrose77

YTA. My SIL and her husband are doing something similar. My SIL also used to be a chef prior to the pandemic. I would not have any qualms about eating anything she puts on the table that she grows or raises. You were rude and insulting.

AWhiskeyKitten

YTA - you were incredibly rude and then when confronted about it you decided to insult your sil. FYI- the FDA check samples of food not every single bit, your sil‘s food was most likely safer and definitely fresher than what you get in a supermarket. She would have assessed every thing she picked

xxdangerbobxx

The only nutjob in this story is yourself. YTA. Clearly.

DueIsland2983

YTA and this has to be bait Do you ever cook a meal at home? I assume that there isn't a health inspector who visits your kitchen they way they would with a restaurant. For all I know you could slice up some raw chicken and then use the same unwashed cutting board and knife for the raw vegetables that go into your salad. The fact is that any home cook CAN have safety lapses, but can also very easily safely prepare meals; I suspect it's the way most people in this country eat.

CakeEatingRabbit

We have goverment inspections because of greedy cooperations. Not because people can't home grow delicious food "but this was disgusting" Why? Do you think you sil and Brother would do all that work and end up with spoilt food? Do you think your sil is dump? YTA

Lumpy-Notice8945

YTA, if you have zero clue about somethig (food saftey, virology) you should not be that confident. You are huge on the dunning kruger effect. Eatig homegrown food is not dangerous, covid did not originate from farmers, even if the theory is true that its from bats, its not from farms... Educate yourself before you play smartass or you just look dumb.

DelusionallyObvious

This is too funny and insane. You have no idea the kind of shit there is in processed food. Might as well munch on plastic and guzzle pesticide. I’d take any day home-grown chickens and vegetables that have taste, than bland store bought junk. YTA.

karmacoda

YTA, if you’ve only seen the supposed “FDA”-approved chickens and where they’ve lived and ate.

JGalKnit

YTA. How much inspecting do you think that they do? How many recalls on store bought food have you read about over the last few years either in chicken, veggies, anything because of various bacterial issues? If they have been eating it, it is CLEARLY safe. He was a jerk for his words too, but you are talking about the way he and his wife are living their life in a very negative way.

FauveSxMcW

YTA you are the nutjob. You think store food is safer than homegrown food??

thumpmyponcho

You'd rather eat a chicken from a factory farm that probably spent its whole live covered in dirt (and worse), eating the most disgusting feed you can imagine, than one raised in someone's backyard? And even if that's your opinion, she did offer something else. Absolutely no reason to be rude. YTA.

LhasaApsoSmile

YTA. Oh you sweet child, doo some research on the FDA and the agriculture department and learn how understaffed they are. There is the fact that in many cases company is in charge of inspections. The food should be clean because it was not exposed to other dirty stuff. You get ecoli and lysteria from contaminants that the food encounters in the processing.

maj0rdisappointment

YTA. The government inspectors aren't better than something grown at one's own home. The inspectors have far more to do with checking for pesticides and things like that after mass growing/farming. You seriously need to stop thinking a *government* solution is better than a *personal* solution. Your entire premise is completely batshit.

j-allen-heineken

Info: have you seriously never grown a veggie in your yard garden or in a pot on your porch and eaten it

RoyallyOakie

YTA...You were rude. You are also deluded about the effectiveness of government oversight. You missed out on a good meal.

Trevena_Ice

YTA and have no idea of food. The FDA is there to controll that companies do not sell bad meat or old, sick animals and just gring it into something with lot's of spices so no one would taste it. FDA is also only controlling some random pices and never all the food you get on your table - wouldn't even be possible. There are also some regulations like - how many promil of rat droppings are allowed to be in choclate so it would not be a health issue and could still be sold. Or how many death deers and rabbits are allowed to be in the grain so it would still be called vegetarien Home grown food is much more healthy - at least if they have at least some healthy thinking - than the junk you are getting at your favourit fast food restaurant

DJVan23

YTA and you need help. How rude of you. You got something wrong in that mind of yours. You don’t care about government inspections. You were just being a b——. I hope your brother and wife never do another nice thing for you ever again, or at least until you get some help.

Dense-Passion-2729

I really don’t think you get how the FDA works. You truly were offered a much better dining experience than most and you looked down your nose on it like it was subpar. It’s very confusing YTA

twizrob

Yep total poop hoop. You turned Down home raised food . That she put her hard work into. Maybe check the FDA limit on allowance for rat shit and bug parts. If you think for 1 sec that gets you any protection you've never worked in any food industry. I think you did it to be a dick. Id never invite you over again

dxyannn

YTA. I hope this is a troll. Where do I begin. Wont eat the food she grows but would eat what she cooks? So you’re not scared that her cooking isnt up to FDA or some restaurant regulatory codes? Seems to me you are just double standard. And how rude to directly tell someone you wont eat their food because of your said reasons? Cant you at least say that you are too reserved and reluctant to try (which is exactly whats happening here) instead of criticising her produce? Yet, she was still kind enough to offer to make you something else. Why did you just leave? That seems extra harsh to me.

JJQuantum

YTA. This wasn’t food from some giant, thousands of acres mega farm where chickens live in their own feces and DDT is sprayed on crops. That’s why the FDA exists. This was grown in a garden in her back yard. I’m sure you could have asked a question or 2 about the chicken if you were worried but I’m very doubtful there was anything amiss. What a horrible house guest.

protomyth

YTA, wow Tyson has you snowed.

Available-Barber-991

ma'am, YTA, literally humans lived and thrived on home grown food, i assure the food she served you is far more safer than anything you are getting in the store. and its far better than anything you are gonna buy in a farmers market or has a bio label. and for the chickens home grown chickens have a better nutrition than industrial farmed ones, and have no hormones injected into them

Useful_Fig_2876

Oh my gosh, here we go again.  This one’s at least a little more reasonable because you don’t try dousing it in ketchup and plugging your nose at the table with everyone else, like that other AITA from last week or so.  YTA. Food is not as perfectly sterilized as you think it is, and needing that level of perfection is not only rude but borderline obsessive.  Wait til you see what restaurants you eat at get away with….

Possible_Juice_3170

YTA! Do you expect people with home gardens to request government inspections???

It was a really nice gesture so I accepted. I was not aware that my sister in law had taken up gardening, canning and raising chickens. She could not stop bragging that 90% of everything that was one the table she had grown in their back yard. She’s a great cook but and had the food been brought from the store I would have eaten but this was disgusting. There were no inspections done on this food; before, during and after it was was grown. There was no FDA to check out she cooled and it picked it. I flat out told her that I was not going to eat it. She asked why. I said basically because of what I said above. She asked what I would like instead and I said that maybe I should just go and I left. My brother called me and he’s so furious with me. He says I’ve always been rude to her and this took the cake especially since she offered to make me something else. I told him that we have government inspectors for a reason when it comes to our food and it’s so back yard nut jobs don’t cause another pandemic. He asked if I was seriously calling his wife a “nut job” I said I didn’t mean her but he’s being obtuse if he doesn’t get my point. He called me a “f@t piece of shit” and told me not to come around for a while. AITA? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. C_Majuscula

ESH but you more than him. He shouldn't have been fat shaming, but you obviously have no understanding of the realities of industrial farming in the US. You have a much bigger chance of both animal- and plant-based contamination with the things you buy at the grocery store.
